noob question from iphone user

I have a few noob questions about rooting on cdma hero. these questions also might other people who are totally new to this. Please answer the questions in most basic english, thank you.
1. what can you do after you root the CDMA hero?
2. pertaining to 1st question, since CDMA hero sprint is somewhat different from original hero, after rooting can you do the same things on CDMA hero sprint has the other htc hero?
3. Is there something similar to installous and cydia on the hero/andorid?
4. getting the "free" apps from websites/torrents/or other means, will it work on cdma hero. to clarify the question, since most apps are listed as for dream and other andorid, will it work for CDMA hero?
5. when you dowloand the free apps how do you install it on to your phone (i know this question is prob answered on the forum but if someone wouldn't mind explaining it in a simple way then it would be appreciated.)
6. also the openhome or ahome i think, what is the difference to root and add themes then use one of those programs. assuming you download the program from the web.
7. what is difference between a rom and theme?

1.) all sorts of things! (http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Why_Root)
2.) There are some differences but it's all the same for the most part (the main differences are what ROMs and Recovery Images you can use)
3.) There's no need for Cydia on the hero/android since you can install apps direct from the web or anywhere by default (just checkbox: Settings->Applications->Unknown Sources).
4.) You can download apps direct from the web just fine, see above. Some apps are coded specifically to take advantage of other models but they usually will say so...and if it doesn't work, you can just uninstall it from the app manager.
5.) When you download a free app, you just run it and it installs (If that doesn't work, you may need a file manager, I use Astro file manager from the market)
thanks for info!

6 & 7. Themes change the look of your UI. They are not permanent things and can be removed at any time with no problem or messing with backups etc. Roms are what you need root for. Roms can fully change code inside of the phone and can extend functionality past what you can usually do ie(stock roms cant wifi tether but the custom rom can). Roms are harder to get rid of though and to go back to what it was before you have to restore your phone to a previous state. Its all up to what you think you need.

Sorry for being a noob, i have the g1 dream sim free, it has 1.5 on it it has no market app. and when i hard reset it does not ask me to register but comes straight to home screen with clock

I'm confused...so did you fix it?
gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed
search for that ^
nope have not fixed it yet. seems like its a original dev phone but it came boxed brand new. in the mean time, the data sync does not open
and
system update gives the error - com.setting error or something like that..
im looking into gapps-ds-ERE36B-signed.zip, thanks for all your help..
You can get Gapps from here:

However Gapps is not an .apk file. You need to flash Gapps with the help of a recovery ROM & for that you need to have Android SDK installed. If all this is latin and greek to you; you should visit here

I would also suggest you to go through ROM Bible sticky in this section.
Alternatively you can unzip gapps file and look for marketUpdater.apk in system>app folder and install it manually. I have not tried this method ever but you can give it a shot; it will not brick your phone.
Thanks for the answer guys, i think i have a dev phone had a look at the rom bible so i can root i . but i dont know what rc versoin the device is cos this does not exist in the build number as in post one. also can you recommend a stable rom update for a beginner.
at amitabhishek the first link you have posted does not work, also is there a way to root a dev phone, or is it already unlocked dont want to try a rom and brick the phone.
Moved as not Android Development.

Rooted Lenovo TOOL -Lenovo IdeaPad K1 ONLY!-

If anyone is interested, I built a tool to root the Lenovo K1
I tested it on K1_A301_04_04_111017_US.
This is a stock image with SU installed. However, you could replace the system.img image with any custom image you want to make, if you don't like the stock one.
Warning: This will delete everything on your tablet.
It would be possible to change the Nvflash to only load a rooted boot image, if that's what you wanted. You could just flash in the boot.img which would give you a ADB root, but that's your call and you'll have to change the loader.
Also, if you hook this up and want to use ADB to connect then you will need to build driver definitions and add 0x17EF to the adb_usb.ini. Here are the driver definitions.
[Google.NTx86]

%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install,USB\VID_17EF&PID_740A
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install,USB\VID_17EF&PID_740A&MI_01

I don't have a thinkpad, if I did I'd root it too. You should be able to download this tool and set of images and tweak it for the thinkpad. It uses a ASUS set of leaked keys, so it might just work for you.
Cheers

Unless you found a new set than the one already circulating, that set of Lenovo leaked keys does not work on the Thinkpad, unfortunately.
On holiday computer(far from my computer) and unable to test this. Though I'm sure someone would have collected the $300 bounty by now if there was a leaked key set out there.

I don't have one so I can't test the thinkpad, so I don't know. It works on the K1 and that's all I can test for now.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to all
I'mgetting this when trying to root:
--------------------------------------------------
ERROR! ADB was unable to remount your device.
Please check that your device is connected,
and that you have the proper drivers installed.
press r to retry, any other to quit.
Hi
I have edited the first post. This is to make it clear what device this is for. Could get confusing as it is in the thinkpad forum. Hope this has not upset anybody.

I'll buy one after Xmas and fiddle around with it. I'm currently working on getting the Xoom FE rooted. I just got the Toshiba Thrive rooted after they locked the boot-loader. So, thanks for the offer but I'll just pick one up.

Now, why would any manufacture lockout a device so it cannot be rooted? What are they thinking? This will be the end of Android when Windows 8 appears.
Makers of these tablets need to realize that everyone does NOT want all those applications they load these tablets with.

A quick question can someone create a Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet K1 forum? I don't know if it needs a certain level of demand. I know have some questions that belong in the general section of the Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet K1 forum and not here Sorry I'm not trying to be sarcastic.

The Forum Request thread is closed for the time being since some refuse to follow the rules and are just plain acting like asses, but that would have been the place to request the forum. It will be back up as per the OP. Just keep an eye out for it.

Unfortunately this is true, Forum request thread had been temporary closed. We have had a massive increase in devices being released. Having a forum for all of them would be a tall order.
The forum request thread was set up in good faith, to try to highlight the popular devices so forums could be opened. But as pointed out it quickly went down hill by people demanding things (put politely). I myself have been a target of some trolling on not opening sub-forums. Even though it is totally out of my hands (its down to the site admin) Its a growing issue here on XDA Developers. Hope fully the admin will come to a good solution to the issue.
If anybody notices before me that that thread has been re-opened, please let the good people of this forum aware of it. I am sure others will want to post there interest.
Sorry to the OP for taking this thread off topic, but i wanted to answer that as quickly as possible. I will add this to the read before posting thread to take all other questions. So please no more about this in this thread.

Works absolutely flawlessly! Thank you!
FIXING Netflex
If you have problems on the K1 getting Netflix to work and you are rooted then do the following from the 'adb shell'
#
# mount -t rfs -o remount,rw system /system
exit
C:\Android>adb push libnvomx.so /system/lib
Now reboot your tablet. Basically you have to replace the /system/lib/libmvomx.so file with the one I've attached. Once you do that, it will get rid of that nasty 12001 error.
Enjoy,
TD
NO root access
Hello,
I ran this tool and it installed successfully, however, I have no root access. There seems to be an issue with Super user. I am a noobie and do not know how to run an update lets say from the SD card. Is anyone else having this issue?

[Q] Can we port Windows Phone 8 to Android Phones?

Hi,
I think it is impossible but I wanted to ask for sure!
For example we can port Android to a Windows Phone device, now the question is: Can we port Windows Phone 8 to an Android Device?
I want to port it to Galaxy Grand I9082 and I think it maybe impossible, but please answer my question!
Nope, its not possible
1. Windows Phone 8 is closed source
2. Since its closed source there won't be drivers for android phones
Sorry it just can't be done right now

Wait, what?
This is not possible for Windows Phone 8 as far as I know. Android does not have a driver for the UEFI firmware, not to mention it doesn't comply to the security checks for secure boot, which means it doesn't qualify as a trusted OS for any device with WP8 pre-installed. And as far as I know the secure boot feature cant be disabled without physical tampering to the chip.
But you're welcome to prove me wrong with a link or thread, which says otherwise.
no.. isn't possible get android to WP8 device... and way get worse to perfect device
Please search before asking a question such as this. This same question has been asked multiple times with the SAME exact answer. Not trying to be an ass, but these threads are being flooded with duplicate questions of this same origin

[Q] Can I install custom Android OS on my Xperia Z1?

I just registered here and I don't know where to post this so sorry if I missed or if this question is already answered.
Here it goes:
I want to install an OS manually just like you do it on a PC.
I have so much unused apps which I can't delete.
Also, im runnin g on Android 4.4.4 and latest is 5.1 I think.
There is no option to update this...
Go to your device specific forum and check the development thread. Mobiles and pcs are different animals when installing an os. My advice, read/learn all you can prior to doing anything.
