[Q] can someone help me with cognition - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok so the other day i went and downloaded cognition v2.3b3 and it went off without a problem. i then wanted to download the v2.3b3 update and the stock lock and circle battery indicators. so i read that i needed to remove voodoo or disable it so i created the disable lag-fix folder, then i read that i needed to use odin and return to stock firmware...i tried that and it didnt work, so then i remembered that i needed to enter download mode...i couldnt get it into download mode...i used oclf thinking i needed to do that to then use odin but it didnt work...i did all this because the update supposedly had the android 2.1 keyboard with that haptic feedback...please help i want to return to stock and i can take it from there...and yes i did search the forums but cog is so big that there are tons of things associated with it and i didnt see my answer..my phone still works ...btw cog is great i love it

If you are trying to flash stock you need to read more about Odin. Cog has nothing to do with it. If you want to move up with cognition you do not have to go back to stock. You can flash the update through Rom manager. Just make sure lag fix is disabled. I see you made the folder make sure you reboot.
Captivate
Cog 2.2

i dont think i conveyed that right...i know they are different...i tried to upgrade using rom manager but when i did i kept getting an error stating basically it couldnt find the sd card or something to that affect....i think at this point i need to return to stock since i un-rooted the device...any recommendations since im using cog? what i mean is...do i need to do anything special....thanks for any and all replies

the first thing you need to do is learn how to read the cognition FAQs....its all explained in there and in the massive thread....why do you need to create a new topic on it?

i got it figured out..and i did read the FAQs but there were somethings i wasnt sure of im not a genius on this stuff like many of you are...

After you disable lagfix, make sure your phone is set to usb development mode (settings->applications).
Before you start, I recommend copying everything from the internal sdcard to your computer for backup.
1. Start the Odin one click to stock and connect your phone. Do a master clear. I've had some trouble with master clear after cog 2.3, but it's the first thing to try
2. turn phone off. Make sure usb is disconnected, SIM is out, and the odin program open on PC. Hold both volume keys and insert USB cable. You have to wait a couple of seconds until you see the digging robot. If you got that, you're in download mode. Click on the start and wait until the rebooting cycles are over.
3. If you couldn't do a master reset before, try it again. I would also recommend reformating the internal sdcard and copying back only what you need (assuming you backed it up).

[Q] Is there a way to get stock captivate kernel without usb? SOLVED

Ive lost all usb connectivity, I can charge the battery but it will not connect to any pc with any cable under any configuration.
Ive recieved my replacement from warranty. But I would like to get the broken phone back to stock kernel before I return it. It is currently runnig http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784170 by atinm.
I have stock jf6 rom but kernal still shows non stock from voodoo.
Is there a way to do this such as an update.zip that Ive missed.
I have looked through the captivate section for days but cant find anything that will help, If someone knows of something Ive missed please point me there. I would apreciate any assistance.
My concern is if I cant get kernel back to stock it might void my warranty. The irony is I didnt alter the kernel untill after usb broke.
Thank you for reading.

Thank you designgears and koush. your jf7 ota and clockwork mod put me back to stock.
I used recovery-update.zip(koush) to run jf7 ota.(designgears)
I had to do it that way to keep voodoo from reinstalling.

I have the same USB issue...tried everything its has been a real pain in the ass . I am currently rooted with jf7, flashed cognition 2.1.3 voodoo enabled. The phone runs better then ever but I gotta have my USB just in case **** happens.
I would like to go back to stock unrooted before I exchange the phone . I searched around the forums for the recovery-update.zip mentioned above. I assume it was a private exchange. I would really like to get that file, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

what I did was put design gears jf7 onto a microsd along with koush's recovery update.zip
you will need to remove your lag fix because it doesnt play well with clockwork if you dont have clockwork, all you really need is the recovery update .zip and the jf7 ota .zip if you can manually get into recovery you might not even need the recovery update.zip I had to use it because after I removed lag fix it would reinstall upon boot so I removed the lag fix and ran recovery update.zip upon the next boot( you will need to rename this update.zip and go into recovery by holding down power+both up and down vol until screen comes on then let go of power and continue to hold both up+down vol till you hit recovery then select to run the update. zip which is actually clockwork. then you can select to run the jf7 ota update . zip
that how I had to do it you might be able to skip the recovery . zip and just run the jf7 update.zip
be sure to rename it update.zip unless you use clockwork
just make sure you get the lagfix off before you run clockwork.
fell free to pm me if you need anymore help as Im not really good at explaining things sometimes
Hope this gets you back
ps you will need to move the files from micro sd to internal sd

[Q] Before I try this 2.2 froyo

I'm completely stock right now with the new update H7 and new to this flashing and rooting stuff. I've been reading everything and seems yall got all this down to just clicking one button and the program does the rest.
So before i try this everyone says backup backup backup soo that leads to...
1. Is there anyway to back up my phone like it is now since i haven't rooted. Just in case something goes wrong
Or
2. is the only option i have is to do the one click root thing and back up the rom then try to flash the 2.2 ?
and
3. If something goes wrong and 2.2 doesn't flash right..could i just go into recovery mode and click reinstall packages and be back to the h7 (if i don't root to back up)? or does that recovery option get deleted/overwritten when i try to flash 2.2 with odin one click?
thanks for any help
You don't really have to back up your phone. It is up to you if you have important info, games etc that you want to keep. Lots of times games were either purchased from the market so they will be attached to your profile. Use appbrain to sync your market as well. Otherwise there really is no way to do a backup unless you are rooted.
so basically i'll have to root to back up the phone at its current state? ...i'm not really worried about having to reinstall everything i've only bought beautiful widget so far but i think froyo flash deletes everything anyways right? but i just want to be able to go back to stock in case something goes wrong and the flash doesn't work or say the phone screws up and i need the warranty.
If the flash goes wrong can i go back to recover mode and hit the reinstall and will it reinstall the h7 i have now back to the phone or will that recovery option be deleted when you try to flash the 2.2?
In rom manager you have the option to back up your phone in its current state. If you get boot loops or continuous force closes you would need to use odin to flash back and do root again to load rom manager. Then you would be able to load your backup.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
ok thanks man, ...one more thing does the one click root/unroot work just fine with the 2.1-update1 right? the h7 firmware wont make a difference when trying to root?
That should have no issues with 2.1.
My experience with JH7 to 2.2 became a huge issue when I used Master Clear....
I could not for the life of me get the phone into Recovery or Download mode using the three button press or any other combo of USB battery pulls and button presses.....ended up biting the bullet and using the SDK method which turned out to work flawlessly.......after hours of searching, googling, reading and experimenting.....
I now have two Captivates in Stock froyo mode.

[Q] Bricked phone after JI6/Odin

Okay so, I used the Odin JI6 Froyo flash and everything went peachy. Also installed the OCLF and the Voodoo one from off the market.
Problem is that the root wasn't total/complete and the update.zip was replaced but could not be used in full rooting or something along those lines (I'm not certain).
Anyhow, the phone worked great for the last three days, then this evening the browser wasn't refreshing facebook so I restarted the phone. After the AT&T logo it went blank and it vibrated like a beating heart constantly before restarting again after about 5 minutes, which then made it beat like a heart again etc.
I tried going to the boot screen/safe mode and reinstalling the update.zip (which didn't work because of the failed root), tried clearing my data cache, and then also i formatted the sd card. Nothing.
After that I tried putting it into download mode and flashing Odin, which didn't work. It said it was sending the PIT files but stalled there and never changed. I tried a master clear and it didn't go anywhere either.
Any advice?
You should've read the forums more before flashing and saved yourself this headache. You will need this to flash back to stock.
use thishttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Dowload Odin and the drivers on the first page of the thread. Install the drivers. Run Odin as Administrator. You need to then remove your SIM, battery and external sd card if you have one. Hopefully your button combo will work to get you into download mode. Next, put battery back in, hold the vol + & - buttons and plug in your USB from pc to phone and do not let go of the volume buttons, do not touch power and you should then enter download mode. Yellow screen with android shovelling. Odin should see your phone, push start on Odin and let Odin do it's thing. When Odin finished and your phone reboots you will be back on stock JF6. While your phone is powered on and on your homescreen master clear with Odin.
You need to read a bit before flashing anything again. One Click Root doesn't work with Froyo, neither does Voodoo. Had you taken some time and read you would know this.
Good Luck, I hope this helps.

I feel your pain. Been there, done that. Although your process of bricking reminds me of a more sophisticated approach....lol....mine was out of total complete noobness.
Question:
1) Can you manually boot into download/ recovery manually using 3-button combo? If so you have hope (meaning your phone is basically "un-brickable").
-Bet that made you feel better huh?
-If you can't use 3-button to go into either modes, then you are in the same boat as i was. Hope you are still within your 30 days, or at least warranty. One way to tell if you can/ can't go into either modes is to check your "Batch #."
a) remove battery
b) look below your Serial Number
c) if your Batch # = 1007 = You are safe
d) Batch # = 1008 = good luck
2) When you say Brick, do you have the unfortunate "Phone (!) PC" screen? If yes, then its a "soft brick." If No, then its a "hard brick." I would start to worry.
3) According to your post, it sounds like you have the Regular Odin and NOT the One click version, correct? If you have regular Odin, i would at least try the One click. Regardless, both versions should be able to get you back to stock (JF6), but we already know how well your current version Odin has gotten you.
If you need help, there are TONS more knowledgeable people here in the Captivate forum than I. They should be able to help.
Good Luck!
1. Yes I can go into download and recovery mode. I've attempted to reinstall the 2.2 off odin but it doesn't take. It is the One Click Odin Froyo, it does not work. The Comm screen is yellow, and the logs just say it's loading the PIT and doesnt ever change from there.
2. I have seen that phone ! computer screen, but I'm not stuck at it. When that came on I held the vilume buttons and the power button and it went back to regular boot up (which obviously still doesn't work).
3. It is the one click. I'm not smart enough to use something that involves more than one click.
Stop trying to flash Froyo. Flash back to stock then master clear. Then go read the threads in the development section of the forum before flashing anything. The fact that you tried to apply Voodoo to Froyo and you tried to use one click lagfix on Froyo shows you haven't read and don't know what your doing. You corrupted something by flashing incompatable stuff, flash back to stock and master clear for now. Read a bit and then flash Froyo.

LOL . I as well. I know enough to be dangerous.
Now, on to business. If you actually read what Rhiannon has posted for you, and click on the actual link itself, you will realize that the version of Odin you are using (yes the one click) is NOT the correct version for flashing back to stock (JF6/ Eclair.....NOT froyo). Remember, if all else fails....."The One must return to the Source...." <-----Plus 9,000 to whoever can guess where thats from.
Obviously your phone falls within the 1007 since you have the Luxury/ Advantage of manually entering Download/ Recovery mode....i wish i did.

Well Said!
Thanks Spartan, I'm guesing too much skimming and not enough reading.
OP when someone says flash back to stock they don't mean Froyo. I don't mean to sound harsh, really I want to help you, but you have to read and follow instructions when you ask for help or it becomes frustrating to all that try to help you. If you want to get out of the mess you are in read my original post and use the Odin thread I linked for you please.

I see you are still on Cog 2.2 B5......dont care for 8 or any of the new ones? Or Sheps? What's your story?
Mine is simple....Patience. lol
I am on Cog beta 5.5 with 2e recovery kernel, I swapped the kernel myself before DG updated. It has working GPS and it is pretty zippy, I am not noticing lag. I was going to flash beta 8 last night but there were some modem issues and people losing 3g. Then 8.1 came out and I read the changelog and it isn't much different from my setup. I didn't go to beta 7 because Tw Launcher was removed and you need that for Kies to see your phone so that's a no go. Shep is using an I9000 kernel and I don't want to mess with I9000. I liike to flash my phone but I need to use it as a phone. I have tried some ROMS that I didn't think worked as well so I stick with what has worked best for me. I have all the mods on it, stock lock screen, battery circle mod, and gps works. I may try AOSP this weekend but I work all week not at a computer and I can't just flash all day. I find that things can go wrong and it takes time to reconfigure apps and contacts and if anything goes wrong it sould take a while to fix and I haven't had time to mess with it this week. I see you are still on 2.1, that is patience. I tried out Froyo and when gps worked for the first time ever since having the phone I'm sticking with Froyo. I am waiting for Voodoo to make ot to 2.2 then it will be perfect.
Also, I forget to edit my signature if i only try something for a day or two. I was on Froyo for a few before i remembered to change my sig.

It's all good. I was just curious, that's all. As far as the 19000, that makes two of us. I tried it, hoping that the voodoo + OCLF combo would work.......WRONG! lol
When 7 came out and i too noticed the TW removed, i thought Everyone would take a plunge into that, since many have complained that TW i/o was just unbearable. Oh well. As far as everything else you mentioned, i feel the same way.

[Q] Captivate market deleted, what do?

Hello, guys. This is my first post after lurking for a while, adding roms and getting all of the good stuff for my captivate. But i bumped across the new market. I didn't follow instructions completely and deleted the market. So how should I fix this? I don't want to reflash my phone, because this would take 6 days and I am going on vacation in a few days, and I don't think I will survive without my beloved phone.
Any help on how to download the market app would be much appreciated. I have the android market app v2.12 but it will not let me install through my computer...
Still have the *.apk for the new market? If not you can go to the Themes Forum and do a search there - someone had the *.apk file for the new market app. You can download it - put it on your SDCard and then run it through your file manager - should install and your back in business.
Will need to use the SEARCH feature to find it though as I don't have the link.
Allright, thanks. I hope this works because normally I could not install apps directly to my phone because of at&t but i will try this.
btw.. are you on a stock ROM (2.1) or have you flashed to a custom ROM? Also if your phone isn't rooted this method won't allow you to install the app.
Sorry forgot to mention it.
And uh.. it never takes me 6 days to flash - usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock, install the new ROM, and restore my applications/app data.
It WAS on android 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is anymore because i tried restoring it to factory settings. And I'm talking about sending it to samsung to reflash it, I don't know how to do it myself :/
Oh, and yes. It is rooted.
and the app from there is kind of messed up... Very glitchy (crashes a lot and lags like crazy) and doesn't show every app in searches, like z4root which is how i easily rooted my phone the first time.
So i really just want the old market back but it will just not let me.
Go into Menu -> Settings -> About Phone and look to where it says "Firmware Version". If it says 2.2 and your phone has been rooted it should work fine.
Otherwise... you would at least need to Root it if on 2.2.
And if your not on 2.2? I'm not sure if this will work as I know it was pulled from a 2.2 updated phone.
Ok.. Plan B
You should be able to find the old Market app inside the *.zip file of any ROM you have downloaded. Just make sure they are 2.2 Froyo ROMs
Open up the *.zip file and go into system/app and look for (I'm 99% sure) "MarketUpdater.apk"
Copy that file to your SDCard and install using your file manager - should overwrite everything and hopefully your good.
Also.. you could go to your Menu --> Settings --> Applications and probably uninstall the current Market app you have downloaded first - delete any cache/data under there first before uninstalling.
Hopefully that will throw back on the original market app and your all set.
The only problem with that is... It was this one click downloader thing... Odin3. So I don't know... It also won't let me reupdate it for some reason....
Hrm.. This is from the OTA JH7 zip I have lying around. Give this a try and see if it works.
If not you will need to re-flash back to stock.
Could you supply me with a good rom thats easy to download and has the market and ****, like android 2.2, because the odin crap doesn't work for me.
Hrm.. I'd say go here if you wish to install a custom ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819105
Then a few options you have is Cognition, Auxura, or Assonance.
I've ran all of them and they are all great ROM's. I currently am running Assonance with the Gingerbread theme and it runs great.
Just make sure to do the reading first then download the ROM and you should be on your way.... just remember failure to follow the directions if on you and your warranty is already toast
Its already too late for my warrenty..... But I'll go ahead and try these. Thanks.
Actually. Something that would REALLY help would be helping me get into download mode. Every time i plug my phone into the computer in download mode it says usb device not recognized. How do i fix this? I've tried about every samsung drivers... None of them work... If i could get it into download mode i could get it working easily

Gingerbread 2.3.3 Q&A

I think we need to sticky/pin this for us who just flash the stock/leaked GB 2.3.3 along with the optional root from this thread since we can't post there http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127249
Since this is the route that I went I would be able to help answer questions for others. I see cognition, mosaic.... but how about us who like to keep it stock?
Brickster
Just want to say that I have learned so much on here and I have a lot of fun trying out different ROMs. Thanks to all the DEVs, when I get a job I'll buy you guys some beers lol.
So... This has soft bricked my phone every single time. The first 4 attempts were from stock eclair. My last attempt I was successfully running Stock I9000 2.3.3 NEE so I thought I would try it from there. Odin gets to boot.bin and then says FAIL! I got into download mode using VOL DWN and PWR which is the key combination from Stock I9000 2.3.3 NEE. I have been running I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 to flash back to stock after brickness.
So i'm sure i'm missing something pretty simple, but any help is appreciated.
Woah dude, that was very very very close to being a hard brick. Boot.bin is the primitive bootloader. so you had a kf1 pbl, and since you had the combos for I9k boots you obviously had an I9000 sbl, (secondary bootloader that's where the combos are contained.)
Make sure the usb chord is on a port attached to the motherboard (in the back of the pc), if it is already switch to another. Reboot the computer and try again.
But with such a close call like that, and the fact that you said it fails every time I would avoid it altogether I mean its a stock rom, is it worth bricking over??
Well, I really wanted to try the Cognition 5 v2 ROM. Instructions say to be on Samsung Gingerbread. So that's why I tried so many times and I am really more curious to find out why it's not working than I am worried about it bricking.
I was on a port directly on the motherboard Odin displayed as com10.
I was thinking that maybe it is my computer since most have success with this 1-click. I forget sometimes I'm running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 maybe that's the culprit. Is there anything I can check on my computer to keep this from happening again?

Use admin mode for Odin and change the compatiblity to Xp service pack 2. This is the best way to run Odin for Windows 7 x 64. Since I use Cog 5 v2, I strongly recommend following the instructions 100%. Please remember when you need to loading stock UCKF1 and when you load UCKF1, you are loading bootloaders, so any disconnection can brick you hard. Thank goodness for the simplified instructions there.
GB stock? I thougth captivate stock were eclair or froyo.
KF1 is the leaked gingerbread firmware for the captivate...

After changing the compatibility mode to XP pack 2 everything worked like a charm. Then I was able to successfully flash Cognition 5 v2. Sweet!
Thanks.
Hello. I use Darky's rom 10.2. And I have problem with Dialer. It sometimes crushes and exits. Problem will be solved with reboot. how can I fix it? thanks.
I would try to flash again and make sure you do a data/cache wipe. I've had random issues with other ROMs when I did not wipe, and all was fixed once I flashed properly.
I know I'm not wiping everything while flashing, but I flash it as told as in FAQ. But my memory will stay unwiped after I run newly installed ROM.
When you say "memory" what exactly do you mean?
If you mean the /sdcard storage partition, that is normal.
yes, /sdcard storage partition.
Before flashing, I get warning message about wiping all data in my internal storage... what does it mean then?
The /data and /cache partitions. And the dalvik cache.
The first 2 are in the cwm main menu. Wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache. Dalvik is in the advanced sub menu.
When i flash this, my phone asks me for a password. It won't let me do anything without the password and I have no idea what it is. I've tried samfirmware.com and that most certainly is not it.

It appears to be asking for some encryption password according to one of these guys that posted in the following thread. But there is a way to get past it by the method in this thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...02&postcount=7
Remove ur external sd and copy over/back up anything u want to save from ur internal sd before u do this, just in case.
data/chache wipe i should do right after flashing right?
