Not until we have recovery, which we don't yet.
Does the Nook Color even have a normal hardware config where we would be able to flash a new ROM/Recovery into it?

You can't back up a ROM yet (even if you could, restoring a nandroid backup on a different device probably isn't going to work).
Your best better is probably backing up your data onto your SD card with Titanium Backup then restoring that on your new one.

Do you mean do a backup of all the apps? when i root the new NC, what will i need to manually install/config?

Just install Titanium again, and as long as the same SD card is in, you can restore all your apps with it

How would you back up apps you haven't installed?
Koush is currently working on a port of Clockwork Recovery, IIRC.
I want to clear my phone completely back to bare-bones 2.1. I do want to save my last good set up with froyo, so;
1) Is it a good idea to do a complete restore.
2) Is it better to leave the phone as is (leaving b/u in tact) or can I save the last b/u to my computer? If so how (Tibu, ROM Man???). How would I return this file back to the phone if necessary?
I never do any more backing up than Titanium Backup of apps. I know clockwork recovery can make a nandroid backup. It saves it to a folder on the internal sd card (Clockworkmod I think) and you could copy that to your computer. Then copy it back if you want to restore. The feature is there, I assume it works, but I have never personally done it. You could do all this through clockwork recovery, make the back up, and restore later if you want. You can leave the backup on your phone after you go back to stock, odin will not clear it off unless you do a "Master Clear". Then you would just have to reflash clockwork recovery, and you could restore.
I've transferred both tibu and nandroid (rom manager) backups to my pc and then restored from them after a master clear by copying them back to the phone from the pc. With the nandroid backup, you have to reinstall the rom first, and it must be the same rom you backed up.

I was thinking this was the case. My only concern is on the re-install, would I be correct in my asumption, that not only would I need the rom installed but the theme as well?

Disclaimer: I've not tried it. A nandroid backup restores everything in the rom plus apps, but not the kernel, so it should restore your theme and your apps. In that case you may not even need the tibu.

I think the trick is having a working base rom and it being the same as the backup. Id be curious to try restoring a previous version of the same rom. How bad could it get?

That may not be a simple question to answer with any certainty. I would not even consider attempting it unless both phone models are exactly the same, you didn't say for sure that this is what you were meaning. If the models are the same: insure they have the same bootloader and modem installed. Then I still would not do it unless the ROM on the second phone is comparable to the ROM you are moving to it. The reason for this caution is that partitioning schemes are not the same on all ROMs, it can even change in a newer version of the same ROM.

Hey guys. I messed up my phone. amature mistakes. I learned my lesson. I was trying to flash a jellybean rom plus the Devil R3 kernel over to a rooted Captivate using CWM. It flashed the Devil kernel over smoothly then when I went to intall the Jellybean rom zip it started to go smoothly then it rebooted in about 5 seconds into the installation and all that came up after 20 min of sitting was the Devil kernel screen. I can get to download mode. I could flash different kernels with odin but then I thought to myself my phone is basically bricked, so I tried that one click unbrick and it also messed up my drivers so now I can't use odin. It worked kind of but didn't change anything. Now I am stuck at the AT&T boot screen. I think the OS was deleted. I can't acesses the SD card. I was stupid and didnt create a CWM backup first. Now all I wanna do is simply go back to a basic 2.3.5 gingerbread and I am never gonna try anthing this dumb again. Please help guys this is my last hope.
edit:
I also wanted to clear up I used the corn kernel to install CWM it worked for the installation of the devil kernel but not the installation of Jellybean OS
Heh, deleting the os? I do it all the time, it means nothing. Have you used heimdall at all? That will mess up your drivers, so make sure you don't try to Odin using the same usb port you did with heimdall.

Go to that thread and then to the second post. Download an Odin one-click for gingerbread kk4 probably with bootloaders unless you've been on gingerbread previously in which case you can go without boot loaders. Using that will take you back to stock gingerbread. Then you can use Odin to flash your corn kernel or devil kernel, which ever one you want and continue on with your flashing fun.
Just an FYI based on your OP what happened during the rom flash is normal. A lot of the Jelly Bean roms out there use different partition layouts and different kernels. So when you start the flashing of the rom the first thing is does it install those two things. So a lot of times when it changes one or both of those it will cause a reboot about 5 seconds in and will get you stuck in a boot loop. Next time you end up stuck on a kernel screen just pull the battery and replace it. Then use the three button combo to boot back into recovery. From there you should be able to flash your rom again and it should work without problem.
Its okay to have the OS 'deleted'. First thing you need to do is go into recovery (red devil options screen). Then go to mounts and storage, connect your phone to different computer if possible and mount your internal SD. Open up a browser on your computer and download another ROM (cm10 is stable). Drag and drop that ROM.zip unto your internal SD and flash it from recovery. Peace amigos.
Its a great relief to have such a giving crowd out there
Thank you guys for all your help! I got a rom flashed over "Helly Bean" Now the only issue I am having is the IMEI is messed up. I don't have any clue what to do now. I have tried following other posts even a video and I'm stuck! Please help!
Once again guys thank you so much cause I'm a far stretch from where I was last night where it was a blank Kernel that wouldn't install a rom.
Update:
A few minutes ago I got service w/o changing anything I got a bunch of texts I tried to make a call and lost service. I rebooted and same problem as it has been. No service and it popped up with the IMEI problem.

Provided the imei issue happened during the helly bean flash you should have a backup on your internal SD card. Look on your internal SD for a folder labeled backup. If you have that look in there and hopefully you'll have a folder within it labeled efs.
If you have that try downloading an app called nitrality from the play store and use it to restore that copy of your efs folder.
Like I said IF it happened because of the helly bean flash that should fix your problem. If not I don't want to tell you what you'll probably have to do....

I have rebooted. Nothing has changed. Although this freak thing happens ocasionally. I get service for about 2 minutes then it will go away. It has happened 2 times today once before that efs restore and once after. I blew off the sim card ant that was not it. IK it's not AT&T's tower because before this I would get full signall 24/7.

Ok I did some playing and actually went in and deleted my efs folder. I did this because I've personally never had the issue so I wanted to see what I could do to understand it better.
So like you Nitrality didn't do me any good so I apologize for pointing you in that direction.
What did work for me is I went in with a file explorer and simply copied all the files in the backup /efs folder directly into the root /efs folder where they should be. I then rebooted into recovery and fixed permissions. Then rebooted normal and all was good.
Now keep in mind that helly bean was the rom that made that backup for you. So if by some chance in your flashing process, a rom that you flashed prior to helly bean caused the issue then the efs backup you have could be corrupt as well. But for now we'll assume it is good and go from there.
Efs problems are best fixed by going back to stock.

Dang I have too try that.
My Nook HD just randomly reset. Yep, I turned it off to reset it and, when it came back on, it reset back to factory settings. I then had to go through the set up process all over and it seems I have lost my root. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? I have a TiBu backup, but, alas, no recent nandroid. Guess I'm going back to square one.

It must have been a full reset since an update would not require a re-register. Were your media files lost too?
Probably one of your installed apps, like adaway, wrote something to /system. If you see it starting to recycle on boot, quickly turn it completely off before it goes through 8 times so you can get your card CWM card in.

All of my media is on my external card, so that was safe. It was an annoying setback, but I'm good now thanks to Titanium Backup and your great thread.
Can I do a nandroid If I just have root installed? I know I did one before--does it require the CWM boot card?

If you have root, then you have the CWM card. Unless you formatted right after flashing the root zip.
Hey guys, I'm new to the one coming from an s4, and after learning all the necessary things I flashed a 4.3 custom Rom over the stock 4.1.2 that I had. Now I've got a massive amount (19.89 gb) of storage from 'other'... I tried deleting certain files that I thought were the culprit(data/media) but after trying to with box Rom toolbox pro and root explorer I have been unsuccessful in removing the folders, they just stick there no matter what I do, even after deleting them all twice over and rebooting several times. Now I've noticed that if I move a file into the 0 folder then suddenly the pictures show up in the gallery after a reboot. However there are still files I don't need and want to get rid of. Anyone for helping?

I've already read through that one, it doesn't help as it seems I cannot delete the folders, outside of data/media/0 as these all persist after a reboot, even after deleting them. File manager says finished deleting and then I reboot, still there, still taking up 7 gb extra space.

Hate to be that guy, but back everything up (helium for apps and app data, move all media to a computer) and factory reset. It's a pain, I know, but it almost certainly will fix the problem.

Ive tried a factory reset, clockwork mod wipe, deleting root folders and nothing works!! :crying: Ill try the twrp format though. because right now i have 11gb in my "other" folder!

I've been dancing around using the TWRP "format data" option as well, so you are advising against that huh? Why, was it a little more than just factory reset type deal? I need to find a solution to this issue and I know that resetting is the answer, just need to find the best way to go about it. Thanks for the update, and I would love to hear what exactly you went through selecting the TWRP format option!

I formatted EVERYTHING in twrp haha the only way I got my phone back was to downgrade twrp to 2.5.0.0 and use abd sideload ( sideloaded my viper rom) with the htc toolkit program on my pc. And now my "other" folder says 2 gb which I believe is correct. :good: But now I have another problem I went into recovery and installed a zip file that modified the amount of steps i had in my volume, (I have already installed it before and it worked great) now my phone is in a bootloop and Ive already tried flashing a new boot image but it doesn't work....what do i do?
UPDATE: I guess i warned against it because I thought i ruined my phone. Also, I just sideloaded viper rom again to fix my problem
