first 25% of battery drops fast?

Ok so this is what i noticed has been happening with my phone...
I wake up in the morning and i unplug my phone from charger at 100% battery life...
after about 1-2 hours of no use (outside of occasional check of time) and no programs running i notice that 25% of life has diminished...
i have turned 3g off and done most of the kaiser tweak settings that help with battery life. for the rest of teh day i can use the phone and battery life runs normally but it seems the first 25 to 30% drops real fast without use
is everyone experiencing this? is it normal?

The problem lies in your first sentence. "I wake up in the morning and unplug my battery." You are charging your battery too much thus killing it's battery life. I only charge my phone in the day while I'm at work. That way I can unhook it when it's fully charge. I would go on ebay and type in OEM battery Kaiser. You can pick one up for 15-30 dollars new.

From what I understand. Leaving your battery in the charger when it is fully charged should not damage the battery as long as its not there for an excessive amount of time but i might be wrong. Either way i have no way of charging the phone during the day as im on the go most of the time so this would mean even if i get a new battery it wont matter because it wile eventually do the same as i have only used this phone for about 3 or 4 months now. any other possibilities or solutions?
or should i just take it as it is and just buy a new battery maybe a bigger seido?

I thought Lithium ion batteries have overcharge protection. I charge mine overnight which I am sure a lot of others do also with no negative effects.

I would hope it has Overcharge Protection!!!
With NiCad Batteries if you overcharged them you would kill the life of the batteries.
And while all batteries do this LiIon are least tolerant. If you overcharge a LiIon battery, that is without Overcharge protection, the LiIon Battery with BURST INTO FLAMES! Thus the problem with the Sony Batteries that caused all those Laptop battery recalls.

Thats total BS with lithium batteries.
To the OP: Try running down your battery completely once, until the phone switches off by itself, then recharge fully. If you never do it and always recharge before the battery is empty the battery's power meter can lose its calibration over time and display weird things.
If it doesn't help, and you can notice a drop in overall life time you might need a new battery.

I have the exact same "problem" with my Tytn II.
Is slows down evenly though. (So the first 5 % of battery vanishes in minutes basically while the last 5 % can last for an hour, when it's half full % will last somehwere in between these two extremes).
Personally I've just interpreted this as poor measuring done by the hardware and/or software. (Ie I don't think the battery performs better the less full it gets as the meter in Windows would have me think)

may seem a daft point but after draining the battery, dont charge with the phone turned back on. gives a fuller charge cos its not being used and makes it quicker to charge, lol

Hmm...I don't see how turning my phone off to charge would increase the charging rate dramatically. My phone in standby mode uses 1% every 2 hours.

depends highly on roms and especially on radios.
with a crappy rom, battery could drop as fast as 10% per hour.
with a decent rom, battery drops in standby mode at a rate about 2% per hour.

If the phone is on but on standby that barely changes a thing. If it's on, with display illuminated then yes it might take you an extra 20 minutes to charge.. no big deal either.

*UPDATE*
ok so i drained my battery last night completely(turned on navizon, tt7, and skyfire) which took me about at most 2 hours.
Put it in for a charge
woke up at 9 and checked to see and it was 100%
I have push mail set to update every hour and i also run pocket sportscenter autoupdates which updates every 10 to 15 minutes
I used the phone for 5 minutes of calls
5 minutes of web surfing
a few text messages
and the occasional time check
at 6:30 pm battery life was at an amazing 90%
i was thrilled.
i continued to surf the web heavily from 730 to 8
a few more text messages
at 9 battery was at 67%
so i gotta believe that draining the battery helped recalibrate it...
i guess every 2 or 3 months i got to drain it out and give a full charge

Froyo FRF85B Battery Life Quirks

I don't know if I am the only one seeing this, but when I had Eclair, I had crap battery life, to the tune of 10 hours or so. (Granted this may not be crap for Nexus One but it is crap based off past phones I have had.) I installed FRF85B last night and discovered some weird glitches.
First off, when it was in my car dock, it wasn't charging yet the battery life kept dropping, I powered off the device, and powered it back on 10 minutes later (still in the dock) and no change stayed at 91%, still wouldn't charge. I then powered it off, took it out of the dock, plugged in the car charger cable directly and powered on my N1, when it turned on, it said I had 100% battery life. I then plugged it back into the car dock, and voila it started charging.
Secondly, originally when I had unplugged my N1 this morning I used it for about an hour at 5AM and it dropped 2% I plugged it back in to top it off expecting the same crap battery life from Eclair, yet so far, my phone has been fully topped off (from the car dock) for the past 40 minutes and I've made about 20 minutes of phone calls on it, yet it still is reporting 100%. So either Froyo can't properly report battery life, or it has the potential to have absurd battery life. Anyone else experiencing anything like this?

First off - you still didn't search this forum, so you're still thinking that an overcharging protection that doesn't allow you to charge unless you drop below 91%, is a quirk. It's not.
Second, wiping battery stats and making battery calibration procedure ONCE will give you a good starting point to measure something.

The quirk isn't that it wouldn't let me charge that way, the issue was, my battery reported 91% yet when I rebooted the device with the charger directly plugged into it, it immediately showed 100%. So pretty much over the course of 30 seconds I gained 9% battery life.
I wiped my device to factory settings before upgrading to Froyo, and after as well, since my device is not rooted, my understanding is I cannot wipe my battery calibration log.
I did drain my battery fully after upgrading to froyo last night and did a full charge as well.

What you're describing looks like the statistics of the battery is "lying" a bit. I believe it can be thrown a bit off by trying to charge it when it's in 91-100% range, but I don't know the exact way it works, so I can't say much about it.
Indeed, if you're not rooted, wiping battery stats is not an option. Several times of full charge and long discharge (you don't need to go below 20%, to prevent harming the battery) are helpful in correcting the statistics.
If you get a chance to try, please repeat this again (having the phone at >90%, turning it off, plugging it into the charger and turning it back on). If it shows "Charged" again - it might be a bug worth reporting.

I'll have to try it again tomorrow morning, first see if it happens under the same circumstances and go from there. One thing I do remember is the widget I was using "Battery Left" reported that at 91% I had 4100 mAh left in it, which was interesting, and when it went back to 100% it had 4120 mAh which makes me think the OS wasn't actually reading the voltage and thought it was just draining the battery instead.
EDIT: Just realised I had my wall charger with me, battery was at 90% figured I would try, real quick to attempt to replicate the problem, I was unable to, with a direct battery connection, but it could be due to a voltage issue or be related to why plugging it in directly to the car charger resolved the issue. My gut feeling is, it has to do with the dock itself and the pins it uses.

my battery often is charging and it hits 93% and immediately jumps right to 100%. it skips the last 7% or so. i think what is happening is you just finally experienced this issue, which many of us have already posted about in battery threads, but it just happens to coincide with froyo so you are thinking its new and related. the nexus ever once in a while battery meter just gets thrown off and will jump up to 100% because it really was full, just had to catch up the meter. you really should pay attention to the voltage more than percentage, using battery life widget. i know my battery is fully charged at 4.172 volts. and sometimes it hits that but still only shows 94%, so it adjusts itself in one fell swoop.

The issue is I did an extra full charge about an hour ago so I can make it till midnight and it went through all the numbers from 89-100 with no issue

Addendum: Also it seems to be voltage is not that good of a decider of how much my charge is. Before Froyo, until I dropped below 94% I was always above 4 Volts, now I drop below 4 Volts at 96%.

So this morning I was able to replicate the problem, only it was outside of the car dock, I was able to get this problem to reoccur with the wall charger. I unplugged it from power, used it a little bit and then topped it off for the day, it was at 96%. I saw the green light go on, and thought nothing of it, 20 minutes later I went back to it and it was still at 96% and showed that the battery was fully charged.
I checked the Battery Left widget and it was saying the battery was fully charged even though it said 96% left also. I did make a crappy video uploaded to youtube from my backflip to show as well what I am talking about.

AFAIK, The green LED will light when you're anywhere above 90%. It's not a function of charge being complete. Check it.
Also, if you plugged it in with 96% - this is the behavior to be expected, since the phone won't start charging unless it has below 90% to begin with, and it'll show "Charged" - because it's not charging (to prevent overcharge).
Again, fail to see any problem in what you're describing.

Yet my phone has always been able to charge when above 90% before froyo. This behavior is new to froyo for me at least.

It means that you've never paid attention to that until now. It's working this way since the phone was out (with stock Eclair) and if I'm not mistaken - it's not controlled by OS at all.

I did pay attention to such actually because of the fact that I had been getting piss poor battery life. This has never happened before. In the morning I would use the device a little then top it off because I noticed that works give better battery life.

Well, you had a buggy phone that has now corrected itself. Welcome to the way it was supposed to work from the beginning.
Topping off the battery at 90%+ contributes to battery degradation - heating from overcharging. So you were actually damaging your battery.

[Q] CM (and others?) battery meter complete screw-up

My battery never charges above ~76% when plugged in. After rebooting however, it is very much at 100% and lasts for a good amount of time. This is not necessarily a question, but I wonder if others are experiencing this too and if there is a fix? Read below.
I noticed that my battery life got very bad after installing custom roms. I also found out that this happened because I sometimes kept the phone plugged in while flashing, something that totally screws up the battery reading. So, I followed this guide to calibrate my battery and it worked.
Now, whenever the phone is plugged in it NEVER goes to 100% when charging. Maybe 80% if leaving it for a while (10 hours overnight). I'm worried about frying the battery. Is there a fix?

It is only a matter of presentation. It actually doesn't mean your batt is broken. Plug it and charge it overnight. Then discharge only for few percent and plug it back in. It should go to 100%.

What I'm concerned about is if the phone "thinks" the battery isn't recharged and keeps squeezing juice into it when in fact it is full (which a reboot will show)? That's not good for the battery. It should go into trickle charge after reaching 100%..

The process described in the desire forum is also known as formatting the battery. In fact most of battery manufacturers (lithium battery manufacturers) recommend doing this in a slightly different way:
Before first use:
1.) Before powering the device on, plug it in and let it charge until the LED is green (fully charged)
2.) Then take the battery out of the device and wait an hour (to make sure all the chemical processes in the battery are as idle as possible)
3.) Then plug it back in, while still off and let it charge untill green LED
4.) use the device....
You can practice this slightly modified with first step being:
Discharge the battery (by normal use)until only few percent are left (1 - 5 % are OK)
I've done these steps with my Mugen extended battery and I was getting around 4 - 5 days on Legend, now I'm getting 2 - 3 days on Desire S, but the ROM isn't very optimized yet, I believe it will be better in time...

Just one thing... Why is this in Development!?

Definitely did not solve it but at least the battery performance is ok. It just stays at 78% for a few hours drops from there. Very weird but as long as the battery doesn't get broken I guess it's ok.

Do you have some 3rd party battery installed in your Legend? I have one 1,5 Ah in mine and it is acting the same way. It doesn't bother me too much coz it was cheap... it lasts 48 hrs with data always on and moderate usage. I noticed this that when I charge it overnight and it reaches 80%, unplugging it stays at 80% for several hrs and just after it starts dropping if I plug it again, meter reaches 100%. It's weird but as I said I can live with that

I've got exactly the same issue with stock 2.2 ROM. I've never rooted or CM my phone; I was wondering if CM would do it, but doesn't look like it.

This seems to indicate it's a phone hardware fault and requires a new Legend to fix! My big worry is, as stated, that the charging light never goes green; therefore is pumping lots of power into a potentially full battery.

I'm having like 13hours to 14hours of battery life..Running stock ota 2.3.3..is it normal for such a battery life?(when my phone is fully charged right after I plugged out the charger,my battery drop to 94% to 96%is it normal too?kindly advice..thanks..

My battery indicator also drops from 100% to 96% a few seconds after i take out the charger. But after 2 days i stille have about 15% battery left.

My battery life increased after upgrading to gingerbread. I can usually go through the day (15 hours) with 3g always on, twitter and fb sync on, with light gaming and surfing of the web, 75% brightness.
My record was 2 days 9 hours with 0% brightness, no 3g, only wifi, no gaming, twitter and fb sync on.
For your percentage problem, you can try draining your battery, then when the phone shuts down, hold the power button to switch it on again. Start up an intensive app like a game to further drain the power. Do this until the phone does not start up (no bootscreen), then plug into the charger and charge overnight. DO NOT turn the phone on during the charge. When you turn on your phone after the overnight charge, it should read 100%
I am not too sure what triggers this, but its likely due to battery memory or something, although this should not be happening for lithium batteries. Maybe its a software fault. Do this every month or so to hit that 100% indicator. It is not advisable to do this all the time as draining the battery completely MAY damage the battery over time. Cheers!

I'm also having the same issue. Off the charger, BANG! 96% or so, sometimes more. My phone will be at 90% after like 3 texts. Its only had 5 charges mind you, I know there's a "conditioning" time but still, is this normal? I can almost say a text is a percent...my 3gs had more batt life after 1yr... now that's saying something...haha
I can almost watch it drain with the screen on...like 60 secs is a percent or 2...not cool...
Maybe I can do the "Desire Battery Calibration" procedure after a few more full charges...might make a diff...what do you guys think? I may be jumping the gun here...

I remember someone said modern phones are designed not to keep on charging after reaching 100% and resume only after dropping to certain level, maybe 9x%. That could be the reason why I see different percentage left every day I unplug the phone in the morning. But my last Hero always show 100%.

That sounds right, because it drops from 100% to 96% after a few seconds, and its direct from 100 to 96.
But if you put the charger back it taks a couple of minuts to get from 96% to 99% and about 10 minuts to go from 99% to 100%

As far as i have noticed, this was the issue with X100 too after 2.1 update-
Once connected to the wall socket, the phone charges to 100% and starts dropping.
it does not charge again unless you reconnect the charger.
till the time it is connected, it will display as 100% but once you remove it drops to how much ever time has been spent since it reached 100%.
why that happens, i really don't know.
Ideally the phone should continue charging if the level is below 100. anyways....
about the battery backup, i think 13-15 hours is quite good for a phone with this display and capabilities.
with 3g, a little gaming, surfing, chatting etc. this should really do.
in fact, post the 2.3.3 update, the battery life has definitely increased.

I am on a VzW Inc2 w/ Froyo so not sure how applicable any of this is for you guys...but anyway....
My battery life is fantastic. I too see the 100% down to whatever after unplugging - I am pretty sure this is like others have said; once it reaches 100% during charging it stops charging and does not start again until you unplug and it re-plug it in. I know in my case charging from dead to 100% only takes like 3 or 4 hours. So if you are plugging your phone in when you go to bed it is probably hitting 100% after 3-4 hours and then the rest of the night it is draining down...
I have found JuiceDefender Ultimate and JuicePlotter to be huge helps to me in decreasing battery drain (JD) and understanding what uses the battery (JP).
Also just going into settings, About Phone, Battery, Battery use - this helps understand what is using it.
*Note: JuiceDefender Ultimate can create more problems than good if you are not willing to take the time to learn/set it up.
Prior to using JD and JP I would generally make it through the day, sometimes have a bit of power left over. After using these I always make it through the day, and sometimes through 2 days.
But let's not kid anyone - what JD does you CAN do manually...but more than likely wont or will forget. So for anyone that doesnt want to use JD, do you leave your WiFi on all the time, or do you switch it on/off? Leaving it on all the time drains battery. When WiFi is available, do you use it? I have found WiFi on this phone to use a lot less battery than 3G.
Probably my favorite function of JD I have it disable 3G and WiFi when the screen is off (for getting emails, updates, etc... you can set a schedule where it turns it back on during intervals or whatever).
Also I like the WiFi Location setting - you can teach it where you use WiFi and it will automatically turn WiFi on/off based on your location.
Anyway - my guess is if you are having low battery life, either you are using the device a lot more than you think (voice calls use a lot of battery), you have things syncing too often, or you are leaving radios/etc... on all the time that do not need to be on.

I tried to take the charger out at the same time the battery was on 100% and the LCD light went green.
Then the battery stayed at 100% for about 11 minuts and then went down to 99%.
After 3 1/2 houres the battery is at 95%!!!!!!!!
Bagground Data is enabled.
3G is active.
I have mail check every 15 minuts.
Screen brightnes at 40%
Weather update every 1 houre.
I don't use Facebook, Twitter, Stcoks and News.
I don't understand the battery in my IncS...

You guys know that these batteries don't have memory right? So when you charge doesn't matter, your phone just thinks there is that percentage of battery, do a full drain once and then it should back on track. Also, these batteries never get charged to 100%, its a safety precaution or something of that sort. They hover around 94-96% which is why the phone drops down to that area in what seems like a short amount of time. The fact that the phone says 100% when you unplug it is for effect. I used to always think I had battery problems, just stop being so worried about the battery and you'll notice an improvement. Hope this helped.

Also draining them completely flat, as in device won't power on, is the worst thing you can do to them
It sort of kills off a little of the capacity, every time you do it
So to the bloke that recommended it, no it does more damage than good

I'm finding turning to GSM only helps massively. I mean, so it should but I was hoping I didn't have to do this all the time, like I had to with my 3GS... And its a pain in the butt having to change it.
Still cant find a widget that will do it for me...not mobile data, ACTUAL WCDMA-GSM and back...
On the side, if anyone knows of one, please tell! haha

I tell you is true, and i don't understand i either!!!
Most of the 17 houres the phone was only in standby and i only read mail twice.
I guess its just a fantastic ROM that Mike1986 has made with no Sense ;-)

I can get a day and a half out of my IncS with heavy use on a pretty regular basis. Set brightness to automatic, switch off unnecessary auto updates, GPS, bluetooth, and keep volume down or off in games. My screen timeout is 1 min (reduce for longer battery life), and I have always on internet switched off. I generally leave my Wi-Fi on a lot by mistake but don't find this to affect things too much really.
You will get 96% a lot after a charge as it is bad for your battery to stay plugged in when it's fully charged, so the s/w on HTC phone switch the charge off for a little while so it runs down a little and back up again. I had Hero before and that did this as well.

juice defender ultimate is excellent in my experience.
i had it set to switch on data every 5mins for 15secs to receive notifications and do updates (i have quite lot syncing - twitter, fb, sky news widgets x2, weather) and i would sometimes have gotten 30 hours out of the phone (ie. i wouldnt have charged it 2 nights in a row sometimes), but always easily 1 full day.
im getting sick of having to use JD though, because i figured something HAD to be wrong as my battery would drain in maybe 5-8 hours without JD which I just dont think is good enough and so could not be how its meant to be.
i then read about some people having problems with cyanogen rom battery drain, and that if you switch off android market notifications, it solves it.
so i tried it, charged my phone to 99% again and im now at 82% after 5 hours 10mins, which means if i keep using the phone at this rate, ill make it 25 hours - which is more than good enough for me. (~and i still have all the same stuff syncing as before, except market notifications~)
also i have wifi set to never sleep, so its always on. (its my ideal that everything that you buy the phone for should be able to be kept on 24/7, eg data, gps etc always on - so i keep them like that. bluetooth i dont use though - if i can make it through the day on a charge with decent use, im happy)

my experience with a cheap aftermarket hd7 battery

Recently I bought a cheap battery which is obviously from china.
And it looks like the original HTC battery with the same black colour.
On first use it came with 80% charge level . I used the battery until it drained . It lasted the same as my original worn out battery of 6 months at the same percentage (maybe due to old batt stats in the is)
the following charge cycles( full drain and full charge)
First full charge cycle -battery only charged to 72%.
2nd cycle - battery charged to 75%
3rd cycle -battery charged to 83%.
one of the major difference is that with this battery,the phone shows that red juice cylinder , when it starts charging from 0%. Something I didn't saw with the original HTC battery after mango beta .
The first 2 cycles the battery exhibited the rapid drain symptom after plugging off the charger .
after the 3rd cycle it does not have this behavior and drained normally.
After this 3rd cycle the battery indicator was stuck at 80%. Used the phone for 3g browsing for 30 mins . Restarted the phone and it showed 91%. Used till 77% and charged the phone to 100%
At this time the battery is doing great . Will do another cycle a few days later to see how it goes.
In between these charges I had some small partial charges.
So far the battery now holds better and able to surf continuously on 3g for 40 mins and its at 90%, WiFi off , location on ,bt off ,battery saver on ,
the funny thing is that it is like the same quality original HTC battery .
is is mango with latest firmware update.

there are some problems with the original HD7 HTC battery.
mine did not last long before it died.
HTC needs to do QA on its batterires. They are the worst ever used

I recently (two days ago?) had a big 3500mAh battery arrive which i ordered from the internet, i paid about £14 for it. I've noticed it's a little weird in terms of performance, and i'm not sure if that's anything to do with the HD7 software side, or if i've just been ripped off.
3500mAh is ~3x the capacity of the stock HD7 battery so i was expecting charging times to be way, way longer but also for my phone to last a good deal longer too, but i've just been seeing major inconsistencies. My new battery would charge and discharge faster than the stock one that came with my phone, it'd stick on 99% charging, it's really confusing.
At the moment, it seems to be behaving itself with 56% time since last charge 15 hours, time remaining 9 hours. I have reason to suspect that when you use a new battery that the battery information Windows Phone 7/7.5 provides is WILDLY inaccurate, and it might take some time for the software to get used to the new battery.
I'm not sure, i'm just finding batteries really confusing!

try using a custom rom, the battery usualy lasts longer. the sdcard tweak works well . i beleive its a prblem with how wp7 OS handles the sdcard power management
i beleive the OS uses power consumption vs power capacity to judge the gauge. also u whenever u full charge the battery , u need to let it rest for a few hours. so ideally every evening u get home, charge it to 100 % from whatever is left with and unplug from the charger immediately after full. leaving it ont he charger whole night seems to drain it when u take it out fromt he charger next morning and start using it.
try using this app battery discharger ( free ) from the marketplace: it calibrated my battery well
when its close to dying like 20%, just run this app , and fully drained, charge full again
now my battery last 30+ hours on idle. i am not sure if yr 15 hours is correct on that size u have ,

yep i agree, the original HTC batteries seem to be worst than the cheap aftermarket versions
