So I'm looking to root my Captivate i896 (rogers) using the RyanZA's One click lag fix. So the instructions say to enter the recover console, which I do.
The problem is that it says to pick the option "apply sdcard:update.zip", but when I am in the console, there is no such option.
The only options I have are: "reboot system now", "reinstall packages", "delete all user data" and "delete all cache data".
I have tried the reinstall packages option but I get a "E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted".
If anyone could shed some light on the situation that'd be great.

You need to install clockwork recovery first by the sound of it. Download ROM manager off the market, install clockwork recovery, reboot into clockwork recovery using the rom manager and you will see options to install zip files (I forget the exact wording). Once you're in that you will have the options apply sdcard:update.zip or choose a zip file from sdcard. Choose whatever you want and go from there.
I installed rom manager but it says i need root access
But after the installation in the recover console i have the same options

Now updated and working!
Note: The recommended install method for fake-flash is now 'ROM Manager' on the Android Market.
Koush and I have been working on / stumbling through getting recovery running on a Legend without using a PC for devices rooted with a test image. The same technique also applies to the Desire... and after a lot of work and debugging... presenting...
fake-flash!
Fake-flash using a similar concept to the original root method, it launches a recovery image from the test image recovery, but instead of pushing the files from a PC, the files are extracted from an update.zip on the SD card. Here's how it works...
Preperation
Download the fake-flash update zip from one of the links below
Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card (the name MUST remain as update.zip)
When you want to launch the recovery image
Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip
That's it, ClockworkMod recovery should launch!
Neat eh?
DOWNLOAD
Just to caveat this initial release, we've yet to carry out extensive testing and you are constrained somewhat by the limitations of the stock kernel (e.g. no support for EXT4).
That's it for now... enjoy... i'll update this post as further advances are made. If you'd like to support Koush's work, consider buying 'ROM Manager Premium' from the Android Market.

i got saem errår Q.Q!
question
What does it really do excatly, i am a newbiee here. Sorry about that.
if your phone is rooted you can flash a new rom without connecting your phone to the computer
It works only on rom 1.22 i think...
you probably need a goldcard for that, so keep it in mind
still not working?
Thread disapeard on modaco :s
To someone this procedure works?
From that that I have understood it is not the FakeFlash of the Desire of the Legend?
And accordingly on the Legend it doesn't work (at least on my Device )
Would like us a FakeFlash I suit for the legend
I cannot make it work.
Just like other i receive this error:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(Status 0)
Installation aborted.
in the modaco topic (http://android.modaco.com/content/h...unching-recovery-on-your-device-without-a-pc/) is written in bold:
Note: The recommended install method for fake-flash is now 'ROM Manager' on the Android Market.
I tried but ROM Manager:
Clicked on "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
it pops up a selection Menu with "Confirm Phone Model" (the only option is HTC Legend)
then it downloads the fake-flash recovery e returns me "Successfully downloaded ClockworkMod recovery".
When i try to reboot in recovery (trough ROM MANAGER options) i receive a blackscreen with a device in background and a question mark. After some seconds it restarts.
Help!
I have the same error.
Anybody asked Koush?
May he works on it?

Now I can change between my favorite ROMs without computer.
Hi guys, I've been searching and just cannot find an answer to this. I've done a few different roms with no problem now, however now when I try to reboot in to recovery the only options are:
reboot system now
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
There's no longer the "apply sdcard" option.
Thanks in advance!
I'm rooted on stock captivate running 2.1 update 1. The app I'm using is ClockworkMod ROM Manager. I'm trying to back up everything before diving into custom roms.
When I click on "Backup Current ROM" I get the prompt for the name I want to save the backup as and hit "OK" but it never creates a backup. This is what comes up on the screen:
Android system recovery <2e>
Samsung Recovery Utils
- for BML -
VOL UP - up
VOL DOWN - down
POWER - select item
By pressing the power key while pressing and holding the volume up and down keys, you've enter the system menu.
If you have accessed this menu by accident and continue bootin your phone, please select Reboot system now. Please use the volume key to scroll and power key to confirm.
reboot system now <<< highlighted
reinstall packages
delete all user data
delete cache data
update media, please wait ...
update media, finished

Anyone have any idea why this isn't working for me? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You have to use the reinstall packages option. It should then boot to clockwork recovery then from there you can do the backup. You may need to use the reinstall packages option twice. Once it boots up clockwork though you are good to go.
Thanks, I'll give that a try. Any custom rom suggestions? Looking for something close to stock but Foyo.
I'm currently running Fire Fly. So far it's great, won't be impressing anyone on the benchmark tests but it's very smooth and quick responding.
Edit: just noticed you're looking for as close to stock as possible. I don't have any suggestions for as stock as possible, sorry.
Chose the reinstall packages option 4 times and still no backup stored. Any idea what could be wrong? Any other way to get a complete image of what is currently on the phone?
In ROM Manager select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" then "Reboot into Recovery"
Once you're in the new recovery console you'll see the option "backup and restore"

I'm at work and don't have signal inside, it says it needs internet connection. I will try later after work. Do you think that not having internet has been my problem all along?
Yes. It has to download a phone specific ClockworkMod, but only needs to do that once.
Yeah, once I was home it worked like a charm, just need data connection. Thanks for the help.
First time I have used clockwork. I was trying to apply Nook Color V1.1.0_r2. It says to:
•Go into ROM Manager. Select "Reboot into recovery"
•DO NOT WIPE DATA. Your androidID(for gapps) is stored there as well as your B&N registration.
•When in recovery. Choose "Install zip from sdcard" -> "Choose Zip from sdcard"
When I roboot I can't scroll down to select "Reboot into recovery".
How do you select it?
Thanks
That "Reboot into Recovery" is when you open the ROM manager app while the nook is booted up. That will then force it to reboot and go into recovery mode
Not sure I understand what you're doing - do you have ROM manager or are you using the CWR SD card image? If the latter then when you boot from that then you're in recovery mode

Are you having problems getting into recovery or problems after you get in?
I am in ROM manager, I chose "Reboot into Recovery"
The nook reboots and shows the clockwork recovery 3.0.0.5 screen
"-reboot system now" is highlighted. "-install zip from sdcard" is 5 options down but I do not know how to move the selection down
Volume buttons move up and down. n selects. Power goes back up a level in menus
you can get the step by step over at androidtablets dot net
Thanks
Thanks, I was having the same problem.
The voodoo plus has been running smoothly on my 2.3.3 before installing 2.3.4
After updating my firmware to 2.3.4, i installed voodoo plus and superuser again
Now it say that superuser is not available even though i have installed it
It also says module need to be loaded
I tried to update superuser but its says "An error occurred and su was not updated. A zip file (su-2.3.1-bin-signed.zip) has been placed on your sdcard, please reboot into recovery mode and flash it to update your su binary."
What should i do now?
I would give it a try
