[Q] Warranty with rooting - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys i have a i9000 and i rooted it so i could put a lag fix on my phone. The only reason i went to this rooting was because my phone was going REALLY slowly.
I put on voodoo which later i realized i didn't need to root for so kinda irritated since now even with voodoo i m lagging really badly i believe i got a defective phone. So i am thinking about taking it in to exchange it or repairs, but i rototed my phone.
i put on clockworks for a backup in case something went wrong and voodoo(which doesn't even require root and didn't help me at all). Does this now mean there is no way for me to return it in for warranty becuase i rooted my phone or is there no way for my carrier to know
and if so how can i cover it up?

HELP! Defective Earpiece

I recently rooted my phone and have been using it to tether internet to my laptop. A couple of days ago I noticed that my earpiece is not working at all. I can only hear people on the other end if I put them on speakerphone. Has this happened to anyone else? Also does anyone have any experience with "reverting" their phones to stock so that they could return it (I would do this but am afraid that I may mess up and void the warranty)? Lastly, I found a replacement earpiece online and wanted to know how hard this would be to replace. Thanks
really hard... If u can change it for a new one do that...!!!
Seen a ton of returned rooted G1's, non of them ever hit with out-of-warranty because of rooting. Realistically, one of the first thing a technician does is re-flash the phone remove whatever crap the end user put on it anyways.
Just redo the DREAIMG.nbh flash. Then either wait for the OTA updates or send it in as is.
Yea I think I will flash back to rc29 and send it in. Thanks for the input.

How to Purposely BRICK dream!???

I was wondering if anyone knows how i can purposely brick my g1/dream. My keyboard is fcked up and I know that i still have T-Mobile's warranty. I just wanna be able to brick it where the T-Mobiles center's employee cant boot into recovery and get passed the G1 boot screen...any advice?
(Should i revert back to stock recovery img and rom? Then flash danger spl?)

Click to collapse
Downgrade the radio w/danger spl installed
Or if not install danger spl without the newest radio
the same way many of people have "accidentally" bricked their phones. just do what Diceman4 said, good ole 1.33.2005 can do it every time.
Curious why you would want to brick your phone, t-mobile will replace it just because the keyboard is bad, they replaced one of mine because the sd card reader stopped working. I'm not sure if they have measures in place to determine if you "bricked" your phone of if it was a faulty phone, but if you can revert to stock firmware and get a warranty replacement, why go about that way?
so if i use any of these methods...the employee wont be able to boot into recovery? or should i revert back into the original recov...just incase?
(i dont exactly want him to see RA's version)
The keyboard doesn't work, they should replace it under warranty.
Keep in mind there's a fee involved if they determine the phone was damaged by you and it was not a defective unit, I'd play it safe and revert to stock firmware and then warranty it, but that's just me
well it's not completely dead...it's just that the space key doesnt press easily. you gotta force press it for it to work. i dont wanna hear some **** that it's not under warranty cause i damaged it for whatever reason.
As long as your phone doesn't have any cracked plastics and your ldi is still white you should be fine. Just unroot and file under warranty. And just to speed up the process tell them you've already master reset the phone and you're still having the same issue.
I'm having the same issue with my space bar as well. For the second time. Faulty design? I always keep my hands clean and have never spilled anything on the phones. I don't even take them out if it's raining outside.
You have the white version? Both of mine have been white. Have a friend with a black G1/Dream and his is fine. Let me know how your return goes.
My ADP1 does this...i just live with it.
Geeze... warranty?
This is something that can be cured by CLEANING it.
Open it up, take the keyboard apart, clean it, put it back together. Fixed.
the keyboard connectors are a sealed thing, ive already had is stripped with mine as i have a dodgy backspace and enter key,

Can I Get a New G1 from tmo, bricked phone

Any experiences from gettin a new g1 and sending in your bricked one or something?
I have a hard brick[it wont turn on]
i sent in my mytouch and it was a hard brick as well. I had no problems with it. You should be fine.
Tell em the 1.6 update broke your phone
Hell my phone was just old and I wanted a new one, i said that my trackball wasn't working and they replaced it no issues
thanks guys.. but what should I say? ...1.6 messed up my phone so now i can't turn it on>?
Just call Customer Care, and act like a noob. say that your phone came up with an update on your screen, and asked if you wanted to apply the update. tell them you said yes to apply the update, and then it powered off, and never came back on. tell them you waited about an hour, then tried to manually power it back on. they will probably have you pull the battery, and a few other tricks, but then they will most likely just send you a new one. good luck (btw i've done this a few times already)
sweeet. thank you i feel so naked without a phone. specfically android
sorry for double post so, i called tmobile and they said i have to send them my phone... and if i dont it;ll be 400 dollars to the account.. in otherwords will they see if it's bricked or not? or rooted etc

master reset

Can I do a master reset? I'm rooted & using CM w/kspec.
Considering sending my phone in for replacement/repair. Not sure if I can tolerate the off-color screen & cycling auto-brightness. Thought it wasn't a big deal and I'd wait for an update - but after reading other forums I'm not sure if or when there ever will be an update.
The guy from Google suggested I try to reset the phone. I know that wont fix anything but thought I'd give it a try...
What do y'all think? Should I just put up with the slight off color screen & hope for a software fix? (That's what the HTC guy said to do). Or should I try to exchange it.
I'm rooted I know but HTC is still good about replacing rooted phones right? I should just instal the stock rom right before shipping?
Srry for the multiple questions
..........
When you just rooted it is possible to revert via factory reset. If you flashed anything else then your bootloader is unlocked and there is no known method to revert that. warrenty is void. maybe HTC won't notice, but if they do, you would have to pay at least the shipping charges.
if you have already flashed another rom, do you have amon_ra's recovery image? there is a wipe -> factory reset option. there is another one in the settings menu somewhere (on the "normal" os), but i don't know what it really wipes and what not.
to bad you guys live in the US. i could even break all warrenty seals and get a repair (at least for products I bought here)
HTC has been quite good about honoring the warranty on hardware defects regardless of unlock/root.
thanks
i dont know what to do. the phone looks fine really now but that is because im using it in a bright room. its only when on low brightness or in a dark room that it looks really purpley...
guess i will return it... because there is also the auto brightness issue as well... or do i wait for the supposed software update??

HELP?!?!? Returning to stock without a screen?

Hi all,
having only had my phone for around 2 weeks tonight the inner screen of my phone has decided to crack whilst sat on the side doing nothing (Yes, I know, likely story but in my case it is true). Luckily Orange have been very good and are sending out a replacement handset tomorrow as it is still under warranty.
All good I thought, but I am now worried that I have to also send the handset back. It is currently running Darkys firmware and wondered if this is likely to be an issue. Also, the phone is configured for my work email and would like to remove this info before hand.
Any suggestions on how I quicky (and without a screen) return a phone to stock would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Michael

YES its broken the warranty depends upon how close they inspect the phone etc .
Post on a similar topic within the last two months re no screen
Normal method of returning to stock is .

Pull the Battery and reinsert it.
Get into the Download Mode.
Flash it with a Custom Kernel.
Unplug the USB during the Flashing Procedure
You will end up with a bricked phone which will force Orange to reinstall the firmware.
And as JJEgan said, it all depends upon how they inspect the phone. If they agree for a replacement, then its well and good. Orelse, you can try my method
by your post I gather you don't see anything on the screen. If this is true, why worry. Orange techs will not be able to see what firmware you are running if the screen does not work.
They are not going to install a new screen to see what stuff you have on your phone.
I bought my phone off of the online classifieds, so I thought there was no warranty.
I was having a problem with the USB port not working properly as I got some mushroom soup (Don't ask) in the port. I figured since I do not have any warranty I will take the phone apart and see what I can do. I cut the top of the metal shield off with a Dremel tool and cleaned the USB port out really well. It did work after this, but about two weeks later my internal SC card died.
I brought the phone into Samsung service center and to my disbelief, they replaced the phone, no questions asked. I guess they didn't even open the phone.
I wouldn't worry.
