CyanogenMod 6.1 for Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000????? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if this goes here or not, but has anyone seen this today? I am surprised that it has not been talked about in here. Has anyone tried it yet?

Its full of bugs and there is not a re-orient kernel for it yet. Its not ready for primetime yet, unfortunately .
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Posting a re-oriented kernel shortly. Sound through headphones doesn't seem to work. Most everything else does. The whole still beta thing definitely applies.

personally I am hoping that nexus S turns out to be pretty similiar to the Galaxy S. With the source and a good base I think we are more likely to get a 2.3 version of CM before 2.2

is CM6 gonna be that much better for our phones?

While I'm pretty sure they are almost exactly the same phone, I really doubt we're going to get source anytime soon. They are a couple of weeks away from a CM 6.1 beta release. It will have alot of the same issues the i9k roms do, but it should work well enough for most people.

I'm just glad Cyanogen has shown interest in the Galaxy S. That makes me feel like we'll see continued development, in addition to all the great devs already here for the Galaxy S series.

xcaliberinhand's kernel should work.... as long as its a I9000 kernel I don't think there would be a problem, except for the already known issues.

No, it won't. You have to use the one that glitterballs made from xcaliberinhands source and cyanogenmods kernel combined. The base i9k kernel won't work properly. Too many Samsung hooks in it I guess.

Cyanogen's appeal isn't just the ROM, there are tons of ROM builders. The Cyanogen team actually modifies the Android source quite a bit. (more so than some of the other tweaks found in some ROMs)

I don't understand. Why would this be mentioned in the Captivate section of this site? What does this mean for Captivate users?

because we can now get an idea on what needs to change to port this over to the captivate, such as now you can install cm using this:

Cause if CM can be re-oriented, we are going to get a much more powerful build than the our current Official/Modified ROMs

It was actually Aery and a few other i9000 devs, cyanogen actually had nothing to do with this port. Not really super important but I am a fan of credit where credit is due.

haha, good question. I think it's when you modify a kernel to work for another device. So, you would re-orient a I9000 kernel to work on a Captivate. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Better yet, elaborate if I'm right.

I'm fairly certain the name derives from the fact that an i9000 ROM would be rotated 90 degrees without it.

Obviously yes, since phones are almost identical (you can even cross-flash firmwares, but you have to be careful about it).
If and when CM6.1 comes out, this board will be a flurry of activity and you will definitely not miss it.
Also it will be stickied at the top of the board

I am fairly new to Android ..But still heard the buzz about the fantastic cyanogen mods .. I also read that because of copyrights etc .. cyanogen mod do not contain google items ( market, gmail etc) ...Does that mean I can't use any of the googleprograms or can the be ( legaly) downloaded and installed in the rom ?

Although there's been some good answers already, what I'm particularly interested in is that the 6.x releases are all Froyo based which will bring a load of new amazing to the SGS, and depending on the CM release schedule, it may well in fact come to the galaxy BEFORE the official samsung froyo rom.
If that happens, it'll be a major coup for the CM guys, to not only be better than the stock rom, but to be dropping before samsung.
Froyo brings JIT and naitive apps2sd, which is awesome, as well as plenty of other goodies. The reason why the N1 recently jumped almost up to SGS levels on quadrant on 2.2 is because of JIT coding, so expect a pretty impressive jump in performance for us.
Also, there's the possibility that the CM rom will totally drop samsungs crappy slow ass proprietary file system that's caused so much woe for our devices, which translates into no need for lagfixes, and generally improved performance all around.
Thinking of streamlining stuff... No more bloatware, just the services and apps we need, which translates into better memory management, and so better stability and even better performance for multi-tasking.
Finally, no need for GPS fixes. CM should be coming with good, accurate and thoroughly tested gps code.
So yeah... All the joy of Froyo, minus the samsung junk, thats been developed by SGS users for SGS users. Might not see everything perfect in 6.1, but it will sure as hell be a leap forward. *straps myself in*

Judging by the thread over at the CM forums, yes, they've tried - they've also tried hacking it on, with no progress. It's not something you can easily just drop in. If you want the dirty tech details, head over http://www.cyanogenmod.com and check the SGS section of the forums. You'll see which thread.

Any update on this?
Its being officially developed for the vibrant and not the captivate, but it shouldn't be that difficult for us to port it, worst that could probably happen is us having to remap a few buttons and perhaps flash a new kernel

Thought that was for an Epic?
Anyways - whatever you do. DO NOT ASK THEM. They will push the release date out 24hrs.
I'm pretty sure that they are waiting for the "official" OTA from Samsung before they start really hacking at it.
And yes.. since most of the dev team seems to be on T-Mobile the Vibrant will be first.. shortly followed by other Galaxy S phones that are of similar hardware designs (Captivate, Fascinate). Personally I'm good with that... let the Vibrant folks beta test for me - so when its released for the Captivate most of the quirks should be worked out
I think the one that's going to get screwed is the Epic folks on Sprint. There is ONE person hacking at it so far.
Oh.. and Viralblack has posted a current "State of the Galaxy" post. Nothing for Captivate (yet).

Good idea..but we still need to show our numbers and support for getting it ported over..The stronger the response the sooner it happens as soon as the official 2.2 RC is out.

Also... hate to say this - but money talks and I hear the Dev's love extra beer money.
The more donations they receive from the Captivate side of things, the more likely they will develop a ROM for it.

Froyo for Captivate?

Has anyone even seen proof of a real froyo firmware for the captivate? One would think that at least an about screen screenshot showing froyo would have leaked out. Makes me wonder if Samsung has even started working on Froyo for any of the Galaxy S variants.

I dont see that happening but lets hope so.
There haven't been any leaked Captivate specific Froyos. My take on it is that Samsung currently is putting all their development into the I9000, and once they've reached stability, or in Samsung's case the point where they think it's "Good enough" they'll use that existing body of code and port it over for the other SGS variants.
All of the SGS variants (with the exception of the epic) are VERY similar hardware-wise, as you know first hand from running I9000 firmwares on your handset irtehun . Once they have a working framework of Froyo it would be relatively simple for them to make some kernel based modifications and carrier based "bloat" and kick it out the door for the other handsets.

requests, usually, are fine...the issue is when something new comes out...everyone wants the exact theme, enhancements, mods, etc they had on their previous setup...this simply isnt possible overnight or even really soon.
relative to other devices, the fascinate has a smaller amount of people that work on it some capacity...dev wise we have 5-6 people that build roms/kernels and look at what theyve put out already in a few short days.
theme wise we dont have the bgills, jsinlegacys, etc of the android world that truly know frameworks/apks inside out...its mostly a few of us that have a relatively good idea of what we're doing porting themes, and making some of our own (well alternate gb versions or something lol)...if i wanted to for example, i could prolly just do quick and messy ports of the frameworks of every theme ive done before in 2 days or something...but i tend to go beyond that with apps and such like others do here
so on my end at least (and i think i can speak for a few others) stuff will come out when its ready...now i understand that themes vacated by people no longer around like retrokid cause some anxiety as it seems no one is working on them...but if theyre popular enough people pick them up (i took on revolution)...so give it a few weeks guys
Is a voodoo port even possible on the .32 kernel before samsung releases the source? Since we only have a leak I imagine it will be a bit before official release of the .32 source for the fascinate. I'm loving DL30 so far but definitely notice some of the lag now that voodoo is gone. But as nitsuj17 said this should be expected anytime you upgrade to a new release. Gotta give our excellent devs some time to port.

jt is working on voodoo from what i gather...i wouldnt put it past him to get it to work...its apparently one of the few things *possible* is still really hard to do...without source
It's been discussed before. You can use a binary kernel to build a custom version using config.gz, provided it was included with the kernel build. Without that, it would be almost impossible.
Ultimately, having the source directly from Samsung is the best way to get a custom kernel.
I really can't wait for some of the 2.3 kernel stuff to start trickling down, since it has ext4 built-in natively. Then we won't need voodoo, it will just be that way already.

Agreed. I put it on the N1 and... Bleh. No major improvements, a few bugs I didn't have stock. I don't get all the hype, unless it's just about removing bloatware and such...which obviously wasn't an issue on the N1. So far I'm loving Ken's Alien #2, but I'm definitely tempted to try Cherry Pi.
Anyway, source release is good! Will be nice to see the talented devs go to town.

Can someone please explain to me why the source code is needed to make custom roms?

Motorola takes the source and adds Blur. Then they add AT&T cap to it. HTC does this with Sense. Samsung does it with TouchWhiz. Source is just plain, stock Android, like you'd find on a Nexus device. It makes it a lot easier for a dev to add/tweak/optimize, because you aren't having to worry about how removing Moto's messaging app breaks wifi and causes pimples.
At least, that's my "I'm not a dev, but I play one on tv" understanding.

I believe cm is great for phones with lesser power in their hardware, that yes. But for this here?! Our guys will make it scream as soon as they've managed to remove the bloat!!
Nah, I'm sticking to our own homegrown stuff..

If you've never compiled a kernel before its kind of hard to imagine, but the scope of choices available to you are ...really massive.
We have to accept kernels from Motorola which they believe is best, or perhaps they have decided to do knowing its not best (for limitation features, carrier requests, etc.)
On top of the kernel is a lot of layers also, with decisions and configurations in each area customized to the nth degree by each hand that touches it and each revision is done. Everything from the default ring tone and boot screen to the default GPS server used for looking up GPS data.
The ROM developers are able to work around, and modify a lot of things, but having the source means they can work it from 'the ground up' in their own image, removing things that have been added without merit (such as BLUR) or moving the whole thing in a new direction.
As stated at the top, if you've never compiled a kernel its kind of hard to explain but I hope that gives you some idea of the scope of what goes into 'making your phone go'.
Folks, try to keep it clean and let's stay on topic. Don't post for the sake of posting, only post if you have something important to share.
Thanks!
cyanogen doesnt support phones that does not have source code available. they only code from source. now that the source is out for the atrix, i hope cyanogen is quicker to port it, yesssss!

If you get an overclock over 1.2ghz I will be so happy. Beer money all over that.

Should this potentially mean that the CM team working for the Atrix now (aliasxerog, faux, samcripp, etc.) may have to start over now or does this just mean they can work faster, keeping what they've already done?

The kernel doesn't necessarily change all that much sometimes, so progress isn't really lost. Even still the changes can be reworked to the new source.

Yeah he said that, I think he wants to know if this may set them back...
I can't see how this could. They will just go compare what they did with the source and see if they need to make changes, and it will make the rest of it go faster. They had source for a similar device they were working off of. This will help tremendously I'm sure.
Anyone gonna be first ti put together a compile thread? I compiled my own kernel for n1 with battery tweaked driver. Can't wait to try on the ATRIX.
