The only thing you can do is use a third party messaging app such as Handcent or Chomp, I personally use Handcent and will never go back to the stock app because of this silly issue. I'm certain Handcent has the option to turn off auto-convert long SMS to MMS and I'm pretty sure Chomp has the option too but I may be wrong.
Just google the two and see which one you prefer, there may well be others too
I also had this problem on my SGS, so I ended up developing an app to fix it called BigSMS. It's available on the Android market. It will fix your problem.
its not an OS fix but it's the next best thing imo

I've never had this issue before
Is it because you exceeded the 160 character to fit into one sms that it converts to mms?

try this! I followed the steps and get it working, no sms to mms after 3 pages.

press thanks
plotinus, as acceptable a solution as that is, it's not right for some. As soon as some people see De-odexed, rooted etc, they're put off. People don't want to void their warranty, all for the sake of sending a bloody SMS.
As I've explained many times on other forums, manufacturers and networks leave this restriction and justify it by claiming it will save the user money. In reality, that only holds true if you aren't on an unlimited text plan. As most of us are, it's totally useless and very much a hindrance.
BigSMS is a very good solution. It doesn't require rooting. It doesn't require some big clunky SMS application like Handcent or Chomp. It's a fast, lightweight, modular solution that is fully integrated with your native SMS app.
I had this problem. Thanks for the solution

I just got another G1 (two now), this one for work. In fact, the whole office is getting them. To make a long story short, we receive hundred of SMS messages a day for the kind of business we do (all automated, not actual people )
Anyways, I was wondering if there was anything better than the default SMS app that would help us manage these hundreds of messages better? Even if it was similar to the Gmail app, it might make it better to deal with. Just don't like the way it does threads and what not. Whatever app we go with, we can't root the phones (at least not yet) so we need something off the market.
Any guidance is appreciated!
I receive hundreds of automated SMS's a day on my G1 with the stock client and it works fantastic. What exactly are you you not liking about the stock client? What would you like it to do?
IMHO, everything on the market that replaces the stock messaging app is pretty sub par.

Yes, that is one thing I would love. The threaded system does not work so well for what we use our SMS alerting for. It's a lot better if we just have a list in chronological order.
Ah, I see. Honestly, you'll be pretty hard pressed to find a dev out there who write an app to defeat threaded messaging for SMS since it would barely be used by the masses. :-/

I wouldn't say that so much. Some people like the old style of SMS. Maybe one of our developers in the company can take a look
handcent is useful
Hey guys!
I just discovered an annoying feature on my SGS which I think is a general feature of Android phones...
I usually text long messages (I'm on an unlimited SMS plan) and I get frustrated at the fact that whenever I pass the 3 SMS point, it auto-converts my SMS to MMS. This would be useful for those whose carriers naturally charge less for 1 MMS as compared to long SMS but mine isn't one of them (15 php/mms versus 1 php/sms or free)... and besides I'm on unlimited SMS so this "feature" wastes that plan of mine.
Anyway, I was wondering if there's any way at all to suppress this behavior. A quick Google led me to solutions of just cutting back on texts/sending them in multiple parts or using Handcent SMS app.
The first is too inconvenient for me and the recipients of my texts and cutting back on texting is difficult for me and shouldn't be a solution.
As for the second, I've tried Handcent and it does have a setting to not auto-convert long SMS to MMS but I dislike the layout/theme. I prefer having the look of the original messaging app of the Galaxy S. Nice and clean and blends with the look of the whole system. No matter what tweak I do to the themes and such, it just doesn't look good for me.
So my question is...if Handcent SMS has a setting of suppressing that behavior of Android, is there some way to do that without Handcent SMS? Maybe just a simple app or a tweak somewhere in the software perhaps?
Thanks so much in advance! This is really too annoying a feature and I just want to be rid of it.
I know this is sort of old but I am wondering the same thing. Anybody have any answers?
Foryo is said to keep it as sms http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=74cc9dfbd1669f47&hl=en
EDITED: didn't completely read first post.
I'm not sure if chompSMS has the option too, but it's much closer to the layout/simplicity of the original app.
Yeah from my research on the issue Froyo will in fact fix this issue...here's to hoping it will come out some time soon for SGS!!! I'm tired of copy pasting my long texts into Handcent SMS :/ it caused a disastrous mis-send recently )
I have yet to try ChompSMS..I'll give it a go later and report the results. If it does look better and has that feature then I guess it can help me deal better with this issue until Froyo comes out. :O
Anyone who has tried the Froyo beta for SGS willing to report if this issue really is resolved?
Thanks!!!
Still here
This issue is not resolved and is extremely irritating. Surely with all the Dev powar here this could be easily taken care of? I'd do it myself if I knew how...
Can someone please let us know how to stop SMS converting to MMS.
Handcent SMS works perfect for me when I need to type a long sms. But I hate that app and would love to stick to the standard one.
I am also irritated by this problem and could not find a way to deal with it other than dividing it manually; I am running on Froyo and it's there, very frustrating.

I also started using Handcent to deal with this issue and I'm very happy with it.
I find it very much like the stock application.
Its not really an andriod problem but a messaging application problem from samsung
Same here in Slovenia...my recipients also get the “broken message“ text sometimes, folowed by another sms with the txt ive written.
I also hate that if the reception is poor and u cant send an sms or mms, the phone wont retry sending when the reception is back... What gives, dammit?

Did anybody found solution for that?
MindFever, I'm also from Slovenia. Did you have problems with sending mms? It wont sent to Croatia numbers, and sometimes it won't sent to anybody or recieve it from others
Hi I have this very frustrating conversion problem also, handcent is a waste of time. so is orange (my network) they are aware of the problem but say that there is a fix on the way from android but noone knows when!!!!!!! anyone help in the meantime?
Hello!
I too have this very problem on my phone (running Darky's RC4). I don't want to use any 3rd-party application to solve this issue like handcent or chop. Is there a mod or a fix that I could use to fix this problem?
Any help would be appreciated.

Same for Galaxy Tab
Hi guys,
I have a galaxy tab and the same problem, checked under froyo and gingerbread. I thinks that in fact it is a Samsung problem and not android. It's just the messaging app that sucks. Waiting for samsung to fix it, I tried handcent and it's ok.

Daswolven,
Aren't you the same person that posted that thread about removing junk apps? I think some of those VZWSMS apk's you deleted might be affecting your ability to text because I removed everything VZW.apk and had too many issues with texting such as receiving the same message 30x's, people receiving an error message saying I never received their message even though I did, etc... So I reflashed an ODIN file and only removed the obvious apps such as Bing, Blockbuster, etc. Phone has been perfect with handcent since then. The stock messaging app will not tell you which exact message failed to be sent which is why I went with handcent.
ithecho84 ,
Contact tech support and have the "flush" out your cell number. I had the same problem with my DROID and they did something to the switch in the network and I have never had an issue with MMS ever again.

I am the same person.
I also know exactly what the apps I remove do.
None of the apps I removed affect sms to cause the issues I am having.
My g/f has the same phone. I have removed the same apps on hers, she doesn't have the issues.
I have a buddy with a droid incredible on CM6, he flashed a new radio and couldn't text his GF, but only her.
I have another friend with a Droid2 who cannot use handcent.
The handcent boards have posts from people on every network with various phone who have various issues.
I never had a problem with handcent on my N1.
So then, Mr. Logic boy. Put that together for me with the pieces I have given you.
let me know what you come up with.
P.S.: You may have missed the "I went back to stock and it still didn't work" part of This Thread.
Make sure the stock Mms.apk app is there, reboot and give it a try. I also saw a few days ago you moved the sns apps off - out of curiosity, do you know what these do? For some reason I left them in there. I know you said you went back to stock and all, but I had some issues when I tried to get rid of the stock Mms.apk. That's all I can think of. Outside of that, try doing a logcat while sending a text to see what the logs say.

The sns enable the syncing with the integrated Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace clients into your address book and the TouchWiz widgets. I have no use for these, as to me it's unnecessary contact clutter, and sync drain to boot.
The stock Mms app can be replaced, and has been, but I use the stock for the ability to select multiple recipients which is absent in the Android stock mms.
I haven't figured out all the differences between the Verizon and T-mo network stuff yet, but I will do some research as I have time, because I am 90% sure my problem lies there. The tech support I've been able to get through to seems uninterested in any kind of in depth troubleshooting, instead urging me to replace the handset, which I will not do.
I had same issue and I uninstall and put it back without using the back up data from a back up . Worked great .

SMS Issues
If you look at your contacts and see an + in front Example (+1-555-555-5555) it will not send. Im coming from GSM service so I had to re-edit all my contacts and remove all the + symbol from the front. It worked for me. Hope this helps with any SMS issues not just directly to Handcent.

I was wondering if you resolved your problem with Handcent? I have a problem now where if I try and attach a picture to a mms directly from the camera Handcent force closes. I tried the same thing with the stock MMS and same result. I went to Rom Manager and downloaded the MMS.apk for the ROM that I am running. I tried it again on Handcent, same result, but I was able to do it from the stock MMS I downloaded. I personally like all the options that Handcent has and would like to know if you have any suggestions regarding my problem.
Yeppers. Whatever the issue was stopped after I changed my methods of building from stock a bit.
Never managed to pin point it.

I'm confused by the notes about the "+" in front of phone numbers? Why would you have a "+" like that, and what does that have to do with GSM? Furthermore, can you send a text to these numbers with the stock Messaging app, but NOT Handcent? Or does it work in neither? Thanks.
If you find a specific, reproduceable issue with Handcent though, especially if you know the cause, let me know if you want, because I've been working with one of the developers (or the developer, I'm not sure) - Jack, directly and frequently. I'm the one that cleaned up the Handcent forums to get rid of all the spam threads/users recently (if you've ever been there, you'll know how horrible it was prior), and helped him get it changed over to SMF from phpbb2, etc. I'm also a mod on the forums there, and I've been testing a few bugs directly with him, on beta builds of Handcent. So I can certainly bring something to his attention directly if it warrants it.
Is there an other MMS apps as an alternate to Handcent or Chomp?
My main issue with Handcent is that it takes too long to get text notifications. They're instant with the default Froyo Mms.apk. Handcent takes an extra 2+ minutes for texts to show up.
I'm willing to try Handcent longer if someone knows how to make it receive texts faster. I enabled auto retrieve and roaming auto retrieve.
Kill the pop up on handcent, that speeds it up a lot.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
Popup is disabled... I'm not talking about phone lag. The texts just don't show up instantly like they do with the default Mms app.
Then just use the stock. I just dropped handcent because it's too bulky.

I used this App for a couple of weeks since I fell in love with the black theme and pop up was 5 times nicer than the Handcent one but I found even Handcent to be quicker than Go SMS. But it is still an App I suggest giving a shot. I might even give it another chance to see if the updates have fixed it up a bit.
I just started using Go SMS the other day and like it a lot. I have been using handcent for a year now and Go SMS seems a little faster and doesn't have all the fluff I didn't use anyway.
was using hancent/chomp/gosms for some time now. just switched back to handcent. to be honest they became quite alike over time. it felt like chomp was always a little behind. no idea what's causing the lag on your phone. although i'm using handcent again, if you can't figure out the source of the problem, i'd recommend staying with gosms. they update all their apps very frequently and doing great so far. might increase the possibility of getting the error fixed which is causing your problem...

I don't like how Go SMS doesn't let you restrict the popup to only come up when the screen is off. Also doesn't have the Gingerbread SMS icon.

I don't use popups, but there's a nice green icon I like. I suppose you could leave the stock icon on and turn off the go icon, then when you get the icon just clear it and launch go? Or use whatever you're using, lol.
Hmm
I have used ChompSMS pretty much the entire time I have owned an android phone and it is way awesome! And super customizable. Way awesome, never have problems with it.
I'm trying out go sms and it seems good so far. I may end up not using the popular because I really like advanced sms toast. It's clean and simple
¿dpeeps74?
For SMS and the like, do you use the official/stock messaging app or Google Hangouts?
Nether, I use YAATA. There is quite a bit to choose from.
I use Chomp or Textra, many more options to configure including delayed sending(if you notice you are sending to wrong person) & ability to choose multiple recipients(group text) simply
I used hangouts on my LG g2 for ages, but I haven't missed it yet on the z3c yet..... But I've only had the z3c a week haha.

I do like having a few more options but mainly I like dark themes and third party messaging apps offer those.
I use Textra myself, been quite happy with it thus far, enjoy the customization options in terms of LED and notification bubbles and sounds that you can customize per contact.

I was a fan of Textra early on. However, I don't understand why they continue to use their own database for sent messages. They used to only keep sent messages in their database thus preventing you from doing backups. They now copy sent messages from their database to the Android database so backups and restores work fine. If you don't mind the extra space used it is a good app. I guess they do it for performance though I don't see any difference between their app and other messaging apps.
I have a group of 50 people, and sometimes i need to send an sms to all of them.
Stock sms app cannot fulfil the job and does not have an option to keep contacts in groups after sending messages.
I have to use handcent instead.
By the way, if anyone knows a decent sms app that can overcome android sms/hour limitation please give me an advice.
Thx in advance!

What ROM are you running? I have seen that setting in CM12. I don't believe it's an Android limitation but rather a ROM setting.
