Only the 1.5 can be rooted right now. There is a thread in the developers forum that they are using to post their results. I'm sure that when they root it they'll post in there or start a whole new thread.

If you were lucky enough for them to have given you a hero with 1.5 on it still, you will be able to root it now, so check your software version. Rooting gives you several advantages:
1) You don't have to wait for Sprint to get off it's a$$ to fix a bug.
2) Almost every ROM has been stripped of Sprint's bloatware.
3) Apps 2 SD is a big +. You can have a lot more apps because you are no longer limited by the internal memory of the phone.
4) Wireless tether.
5) Easy backup/restore.
The biggest advantage that is a combination of multiple things above is how fast your phone will be. Now, to be fair I will warn you of some disadvantages:
1) For the most part, you are on your own. People in the community will try to help all they can, but for the most part you need to be able to troubleshoot.
2) Technically, it does void your warranty and is not condoned by Sprint. That being said, if you have insurance you can always just pay $100 and get a new phone no matter what.
3) The reason phone manufacturers do not give you root to begin with is that you can do a lot of damage and really screw your phone up. For almost all things there is a simple fix of just restoring to a backup, except for one case: if you flash a bad radio.

EDIT- The guy above me beat me to it. Sorry for the double info.
Hello everyone, first post I'm an android noob, I love gadgets and cell phones, but am not computer savvy. I am almost ready to flash my first ROM onto my captivate, which is currently running android 2.1 update 1, OCLF v2.2+ Donate Version, autokiller, autostarts, and has touchwiz and Launcher Pro Plus (launcher pro is the default skin), but before I flash to a new ROM, I want to make sure I'm doing everything right to minimize the possibility of bricking my captivate. I think that is all the relevant information but let me know if there is anything else I should mention... I LOVE LOVE LOVE my captivate and I'm a teacher with more debt than income so I would really be quite sad if it bricks.
OK here's the rundown!
Clockwork Recovery
I don't really understand the different versions of Clockwork Recovery, but I know that I have *some* form/version of it on my captivate. I rooted using RyanZA's OCLF (MAJOR props to him; his app made me me fall in love with my phone/android in general) which I *think* made me get Clockwork Recovery, or maybe it was busybox. About a month ago I downloaded Titanium Backup, which I also *think* made me download Clockwork Recovery. Then I deleted TB about an hour later because at the time I didn't have any use for it (although I guess perhaps now I should get it back). Most recently I downloaded the "pro" or "full" or something version of ROM Manager (what a great app, I'm surprised something so essential isn't already part of android. I forked out the 5 bucks because, like RyanZA, the dev deserves the props if you can afford it, but nothing other than "free stuff" appears in the "download ROM" section, which sounded super convenient, and was supposed to come with the paid version... anyone know why this might be?), and I know for sure that I installed/downloaded/? Clockwork onto my phone through the ROM manager because I just did it like two days ago. --> OK I Just went into ROM Manager to look at it again and it says "current recovery: Clockwork Mod 2.5.1.2"
Anyway the reason I'm asking about this is because I remember reading a couple of different articles that said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone and you will never be happy and nobody will ever love you." However I might be thinking about busybox? which brings me to:
Busybox
To be honest I never even really understood what exactly busybox is but I think I read somewhere that, like clockwork, it said something like "make sure you have the right version of clockwork before you flash to a new ROM or you will brick your phone." I do not know if I have it on my phone or not, much less what version.
OCLF v2.2 Donate
So I am going to undo the lagfix, but not undo the root that came with the OCLF app that came with the app because I need it to stay rooted. Is this a problem? I switched the scheduler back to "cfq" because that was what it used to be, but I used "deadline" before I started planning the ROM flash. Fun fact: I have no clue what any of that means, but boy did it make things speedy
Which ROM?
I know this has been asked before and I know it comes down to preference, but given the information about the current state of my phone, is there a particular ROM that you would suggest? If that doesn't make sense, what I mean to say is, does anyone know if, for example, people who have at any point used a lag fix are predisposed to bricking their phone during a flash, or if people who run Clockwork Recovery can't use ROM x?
The biggest things that concern me are 1. stability 2. that the ROM is still supported 3. froyo 4. easy sync/integration with everything google (mail, maps, calendar, etc). I like a clean, elegant look and feel, but I imagine I can skin whatever ROM to my liking. I am leaning towards Cognition, simply because I seem to read that one the most often.
Thank you for any help, it is greatly appreciated
Any other advice out there or links to good guides would be great too
oh hey sorry one more thing, as long as I'm asking noob questions: I know that live wallpapers drain battery but I love the earth one with a black background, looks so damn good. ClockworkMod comes to you via Rom Manager. The reason you don't see the list of downloadable roms is.... they ain't none for that list. There are a few Roms, but they are not subscribed (or whatever) to that service. You gotta get 'em here from their respective threads in xda.

Make sure you can do the 3 button thing to get into recovery or download modes. As far as I know that's the only way you can really 'brick" your phone. Some cappy's can't do any 3 button combos from power off. This is bad as you can't get out of the loop into recovery. DesignGears has a post about this, with a fix if you have this issue. Find it, Read it, Know it. And stuff.
Get the androidSDK and learn about abd. Sometimes this can get you out of trouble when nothing else can. There are tons of references to it in xda and google will get you a ton of reading material. Beyond a single post in scope to explain that one. Here's a start: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
Familiarize yourself with Odin and Odin One-Click. Not sure where to point you there as I found my info slogging through the cognition beast...err... thread. Pretty sure you can find a couple threads by DesignGears in development that will get you the programs and get you started.

Damn it's a good thing you said that. I just tried it to make sure that I could go into recovery mode... I always assumed that I could...
I seem to be one of those people that can't go into recovery mode using the three button press method. What's worse is that I have a mac so I (think) I can't use odin either.
Does this mean I can't fix my phone is it soft bricks while flashing? I can't take that risk...

people say cognition is so cool too...

Dang. That sucks. Did you look for DesignGears thread on the 3 button issue? There's another one another guy posted but I don't remember who.
No Odin is bad yeah, if you soft brick. You can look at Heimdale (link to it on the Cognition DL page here). But it sounds fairly complicated. Might be fun just to figure it out and seein' as you're on mac it may be your only option. No idea where to send you to learn how to use it tho, just know that it can be used on a Mac.
Good luck to ya!

Thanks for pointing that out! It's WAY beyond my modest computer knowledge (I was using Terminal and typing in Unix commands, I'm sure it was all totally amateur, but I felt like such a computer bad-ass ), but now I actually have an option, where before I had none! Thanks!!

Please make sure you know what you are doing before you end up with a brick. First there is no jailbreaking in android. Second you can find what you are looking for under settings about phone. And dont assume it is the newest version cause you bought it today. Alot of the device being sold still have 2.1 on them and not 2.2. So do yourself a favor and save some grey hairs and do a few hours of research before you do anything.

No not all apps are free. Even if you root it the apps will still cost depending on the apps. I am not sure of the games that you can get as like i said I dont play games on it. As for the themes they are mostly for custom roms and few will work on a stock rom.
Once again before you do anything head over to the dev section and read up or you will end up with a paper weight.
The problem here is that you cannot jailbreak your phone.

He is right. Jailbreaking doesnt appy here. What you need to do is root and enable non market apps.
There's no ds emulator, only gba, ps1, snes, etc, but no n64. Also we don't talk about getting paid apps for "free" here since its...illegal :0. 2.2 is "froyo". We pretty much call it "rooting" and not jailbreaking. Once you root your captivate, you can install custom roms and you can make your homescreen flashy without having to even root it if you want. Android is wayyyy more customizable than iphone(sounds like you are coming from that)

The reason it wont work is because you dont have root. Here is a link to some reading. I implore you toread up. If you go to fast you are gonna be real mad when your phone wont even boot up anymore. if it is 2.2 then yes it is froyo.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887525
Start here.
Go to settings-> about phone and look at the "firmware version" if its 2.1 then its "eclair", if its 2.2 then its "froyo". 2.3 is "gingerbread" and you don't have to worry about 2.3 until after your more acquainted with this whole rooting business.(don't try getting gingerbread right now)

Just asking because some of the things you want can just work without having to root, just remember rooting voids your warranty.

Hello,
First off let me say I'm not great at rooting my phone. When I had a Samsung Infuse I did it on accident pretty much and now that I have an Atrix, I'm no good at all. I'd like to be able to remove my internet browsers, the default one and Chrome, and I'd like to remove the Google Play store too. Basically, I just want my phone to have my email, 2 or 3 other apps I use, and that's it. Last time I removed my browser on the Samsung Infuse, I lost my data connection. Does any one know an easy, safe way to remove both browsers and Google Play? I'd almost be willing to pay for this if it's possible.
Thanks!

Why would you want to remove the play store? and only have 2 or 3 apps on a phone like this? why not get a dumb phone? If you really want to though you can root your phone then use titanium backup to remove the apps.

Kind of a personal thing, with the main thing being I love the phone, but don't like wasting time with the internet. And if I have access to the internet, I'd be stuck on it all day. Thus, I'd like to remove the play store to block access to doing that. Just using the apps I normally already use and keep those and remove the rest.
I've tried rooting Super One click but that doesn't seem to work. What is the best/easiest/fastest way to root my phone?

Basically what you need to do is flash the stock ICS image (4.0.4), root it, then install an app called "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper" (on Play as "OTA RootKeeper" by Supercurio). Then you "temp unroot" via Voodoo and apply the 4.1.1 update. After you install the update you install Voodoo OTA Rooteeper again, and voila, you can restore your rooted phone.
There are posts in the thread I linked where people ask "can you flash 4.0.4 over 4.1.1" and have been answered "yes," but I didn't have to do it personally.
One of the steps is to update superuser and then update the superuser binary. There are 2 ways to do this, one through the app store & with the superuser program, and the other to "replace the apk in /system/app with the one in /data/app." I struggled with this step. I could update Superuser via the app store, Superuser would detect that its binary was out of date and then try to download the new version, but the installation would always fail. I ended up copying Superuser.apk and "su" from the Superuser website and copying them to the phone using ADB. Since you've said you suck at rooting, this might be too much for you. I don't now how necessary it is, maybe others can comment.
Good luck! Although I'm somewhat in agreement with other sentiments regarding your post ... a dumb phone & a dumb iPod would solve your Internet-distraction problems for a lot less hassle... plus put a decent wad of cash back in your pocket.

Well, I've thought about that, but I really like several apps that I don't want to lose, such as Google Maps/Navigation, Google Music, Sermon Audio, Google Drive, and Bank of America among the main ones. Thus, I'd rather keep the phone with data and rid myself of these 2 other distractions and nuisances.

Anyway my first answer was dumb and I don't mean to argue. There's a JB tutorial right here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2143437 .
Edit: If you're concerned this method is beyond your capabilities, read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147443

Alright, this thing is ticking me off a little. I think something went wrong around restarting samba servers: restart: unknown job: smbd
Also, my phone won't recognize the remote storage. IP address is either 192.168.0.8, or 192.168.0.255, and I've tried both.
Any ideas?
Ok, here's another question:
If I buy a Nexus 4, which comes unlocked, from Google, should I be able to just install Titanium Backup and remove what I want?
Anybody know??
I would assume you'd have to root it first but maybe not.

Google says it comes unlocked
They do but you still need to be rooted first.

Well, then I suppose Super One Click would probably work with that?

Well I still have an Atrix, I was just asking a simple question about the Nexus before I make a decision. But I'm probably just going to stay with the Atrix. We can close this thread, I don't need any more guidance on this.
Thank you all for your help!
Ok so I just switched from an iPhone 6 plus to the note 4 and I love it but I keep seeing all the post about rooting and I don't know if it's for me I have jailbroken my iPhone before but I see so many different stuff like roms and am kind of lost and don't know where I would start and what to choose what's the difference between them and if it's even worth it any info and comments would be appreciated. Thanks
Dude, if you have a brain in your head. And a computer or laptop at home. WHAT are you waiting for??! Rooting and custom roms are always going to be my sht lol. Thus why when I get my laptop I am rooting right away. And start to learn to code android with a bunch of programs. Eventually i will bring out a rom myself. It's all about the love for the "sport". Only reason I haven't rooted is because the current computer I have sucks so bad, so slow. But once this taxes come in baby its on!
I haven't found the need to root just yet. If Lollipop releases before the official T-Mobile release, then may-be.
no... simple
But I still don't know why I should root and I I was going to root which one should I use and what does it mean when I see people are rooted and then they flash roms or something I don't want to brick my phone and will I still be able to jump because I hear that it will show that it's been rooted or something about Knox?

The need to root should come before doing it. If you don't know what you're doing it for then you don't need it.

Based on your questions, you have ALOT of reading up to do before you should even attempt to root..Its super easy, but until you know what you are doing, and how to recover in case something goes wrong, don't be in a hurry to do anything...
Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2903733
I'd recommend firekat for your first rom. I'm switching to some version of cm12 today, but you can work on that later when you are more comfortable with Odin and team win recovery.
I guess my main question is what can I do if I root that I can't do unrooted. I have unrooted a phone before thanks to this forum and the help users provided. I wouldn't do anything until I read and was sure of what I was doing but the curiosity has me thinking of doing it and as I read the post on these forums like everyone and their mother is rooted.
You won't brick. These phones are hard to brick. Just follow the instructions. They don't check if Knox is tripped to jump.
Ad blockers like adfree and adaway are big reasons for me. Makes it so you can use free apps without suffering through the ads. It's most important for me with free games and the CNN app:
You can see in that same picture cachemate. Using it and other cleaners requires root access.
Sd maid is another cleaner that needs root access to be fully functional. In the picture you can also see root browser which let's you see more of the phone than my files:
Titanium backup let's you remove the Tmobile bloat:
It requires root access.
