[Q] Sooooo Im pretty sure i f****d up big time.... - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i decided to go on a Flashing spree today for no reason, i just felt like it..
I started out by flashing 2.2 on my 2.1 phone, that all worked out quite well, but for some reason i could not root it. ( I used http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845558) It all worked out nicelly but since i could not root it, i just game up on it.
After searching i found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475 to revert my phone back to its original firmware. I have a Galaxy s Vibrant, so i thought it was the correct thing. But since i installed it i have alot of problems.
First of all, when i plug it into my USB the phone auto turns off. And it will not charge when the usb is in.
I have rom manager installed, but when i try to run a rom, i keep getting the error (status = bad ).
Also the phone wont recognise my SimCard so i cant stay with this firmweare anyways.

flash back to a stock Froyo
then boot into the Recovery Mode
then wipe data, and wipe cache
see if that helps

Do you know the best place where i can get a stock froyo rom ?

It looks like you flashed the actual "Vibrant" (T-Mobile US) type firmware onto your Bell i9000M phone... I dont know if you can flash back as the Download and Recovery modes for the actual Vibrant are different than the i-9000 model phones...
@Allgamer, can you be of any further help?

btw i really hate Samsung right now, why would you release a phone called a i-9000m Vibrant, then release a phone under the brand name vibrant

I agree with you on this man. How confusing could they make it? I guess they did it to sort of distinguish our model of i9000M from the International version but couldnt they at least give a different name from the U.S. model?
They even look identical except for the fact that the U.S. Vibrant has 4 soft keys at the bottom where we have the 2 soft and 1 hard key...

Well now that my panic attack is over and my phone is back to normal after Flashing 2.2 on it ( FOR I-9000m even ).
I have another random question..... what is the best way to root 2.2.. since the whole point of the **** up was because i would not root it

I recommend the app called z4root by RyanZA. You can find it on the Market. It is a one click root that requires no flashing of any kind.
You may have to start the app and if it seems to hang for a while just perform a reboot and run the app again and it will root within 30 seconds. Also be weary in the Market as someone has stolen the icon and everything from RyanZA and the "rip off" app is NOT complete. Make sure the one you download states it is from RyanZA...

[Q] Major problem after VooDoo Lag Fix

Hi guys,
I'm in real need of someone who can help me out, a friend at work asked me to give him my phone (we both have the same galaxy s I9000) because he had a lag fix for it that was really easy... ok i thought... he ran it and now the phone is really fast!! great I think! The then problems started.
When it boots up it shows a new screen that says vibrant (this isn't a vibrant phone its a aussie model i9000)the first sign that things were wrong, then the headphone detection wasn't working, and worst of all i can connect it to a usb or even a power charger without the phone turning off and the battery icon appearing then turning off again indefinably. ohh shiiiit!
I think he may have run the vibrant file not the correct one for the international i9000 i have, so i find the voodoo website and rerun the update with the correct one (used a removable sd card get the files from my pc to the phone) BUT still have the same problems I also tried the “disable lagfix” to roll back but no luck.
SO if anyone can tell me how to dig myself out of this ever deepening hole I will be hugely indebted to you...BIG TIME!!
Are you sure he didn't switch his phone with yours. The lagfix doesn't need a new rom.
From my pov.
He installed vibrant firmware, then installed Voodoo.
Browse flash guides. You still have boot.
flash a new firmware, 2.1 imo. is the best, add voodoo and/or oclf v1.
Must ofc have root priv.

[Q] Bell i9000m Official 2.2 Froyo Upgrade Question(s)

So apparently the official 2.2 Froyo is rolling out. I haven't checked yet but I will when I get home. I have some newb questions.
I got my phone and haven't touched a thing to it. Just added lots of apps. No root. No lag fix. Nothing.
My question is, if I upgrade this officially via Kies:
1) Do I lose my contacts / stuff ?
2) Do I lose my apps ?
I heard people saying that once you upgrade to do a hard reset of the phone -- why ? What happens if you don't ?
With this in mind, how and what is the best way to back up all my apps ? I haven't rooted but i DO have Titanium Back up. Would Z4root work for i9000m ? can anyone confirm ?

2. Do I have to perform a factory reset before applying the firmware upgrade?
Why is this stupid update corrupting internal SD's left and right? Bell better get me a new phone! Cause this one is bricked(I think) it goes up til "S" logo and then nothing but blank screen. If I touch the button, they light up but still nothin on the screen.
I should have gotten a different phone to begin with, but too bad Canada doesn't have all the good phones US has like D2 DX HTC Evo etc. Going up to Bell tomorrow for an exchange.

A lot of people have been complaining that their SD cards have been screwed. Luckily mine went through without any problems and hasn't given me any trouble so far.
Froyo is insane tho, before the phone used to lag a bit, now the moment i touch it it opens. No need for lag fix in my opinion, everything works blazing fast as is.
One thing to watch out for is the WIFI. It was working normally at the beginning but after 3 hours it just disconnected for no apparent reason and has trouble connecting back.
Good luck

Yep, but for optimised result, this is a must do!
You can probably have it work without doing a factory reset, but you can encounter weird behavior, bugs and stuff!
Anyway, you might end up doing it anyway to solve the firts boot issue
I'm one of the users who upgraded to Bell Froyo (from stock FW with root and lagfix - undid the lagfix before upgrading) and then encountered the broken internal SD card issue. I ran Volume UP/Power/Home(middle button) to reformat everything and it is up again. Inside the OS, I ran the internal factory reset again. So far so good. *crossing fingers*
I updated mine last night. However I've had major problems since. Initially it would just freeze up randomly and require removing the battery to get it back up and running.
Today I decide to reset it to defaults which seemed to go fine, although shortly after getting it all setup again, some Samsung app of sorts came up with an error and had to be forcefully closed. Then I was left with a black screen and only the notification bar.
Powered off the phone and went to turn it back on, and now it just loops through the Samsung GT i9000 screen (white writing). Not even the colourful S logo comes up.
I'm able to get it into Download Mode but not Recovery Mode. I'll have to do some reading about this Odin stuff tonight. Hopefully I can revive it, otherwise I guess I'll had to send it in for repairs. No idea if Virgin Mobile repairs will go through Bell or if I take it to them directly.
This is my first Android phone and I've only had it for just over a week. I thought I was making a good decision, but now I see it has quite a defect with the internal SD card failing.
Slow after upgrade
I upgrade my phone last night ( as per bell and Samsung) It is now slower than before. Quadrant Standard has it under 900.
Any ideas how to fix it?

I have an unlocked phone from Bell that I already upgraded to the international (or European?) JPP/JPO 2.2, what is the best way to downgrade or restore back to default firmware before using Kies to get the official update? Does factory reset restore stock firmware?
I upgraded to official Bell froyo last night ..thn rooted. But how can i Unlock now? i tried using SGS unlock app it says no unlock codes found?? Please help
God damn samsung and bell!
it seems like they're giving defected phones to their costumers!

this is f-ing xmas for god's sake. i want my phone
Same problem here!
I do have 2 good samsung galaxy s vibrants from Bell, however when i got the second one i upgraded to Froyo and now i cant unlock it because i cant read the stupid file inside the phone so,
How can i go back to my previous JH2 baseband?
Or
How can i unlock JK4?
I did my unlock on the other Galaxy using the script you donwload from somewhere in this website and then connecting the phone via usb cable with debugging on and mounting sd but with froyo i dont even know where my USB settings went!!!
Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.

[Q] Stuck on logo screen suddenly. Ideas?

Hi,
Last night my Galaxy S was low on battery, and I kept trying to turn it on for it to die right away (it was working as expected I guess)
This morning after I charged my phone it wouldn't turn on at all! It loads to the logo screen, makes that jingle sound and then holds and doesn't turn on.
I can get to recovery and download mode.
I put OCLF on like 2 months ago, but haven't modded/flashed ANYTHING since. It is very bizarre how it just died.
I'm wondering what my options are now. Obviously I would rather not loose all my personal files. Since I can get into download mode, can I just flash a new firmware? I'd like FroYo anyway, but I haven't got a clue what to do.
Great start to the year – !
Cheers,
Mitch
EDIT: I just decided to try the "Clear User Cache" option and then reboot to no avail. Now I can't get back into recovery mode!?!? Download mode still works. Huhh?? Is this expected? Have I lose Recovery Mode entirely now? Crap.
seeeems like an odin flash via the download mode is the only way. There are a few tutorials on this site and even tut vids on youtube so you should be fine if you just follow everything they do (as long as it works for them of course)
How do I know what version to flash? I have read a few tutorials and they all have started with "Dial x and check you have y" etc. Obviously I can't do any of that.
What is the *safest* firmware I can flash?
My phone currently has some optus variety.
Please forgive the noodish question.
Mitch
Where are you located? And who is your provider?
Hi,
I'm in Sydney Australia and my provider is Optus.
Thanks
Hi,
I still can't get my phone working and am not clear how to proceed.
What would be the best firmware to flash to my Optus Galaxy S that bricked out of the blue? Should I just send it back to Samsung?
Thank You

Hey mate go to samfirmware and get I9000DTJG4 thats the stock optus rom once you get phone up and running then upgrade to 2.2.1.
Sounds like you'll need to do a flash of a stock rom..
By the way, the old oclf had some issues that might lead to system corruption (unfortunately I'm not very sure exactly what it does, or whether it could lead to this problem). I'd suggest getting one of the newer lag fixes available here when you do get your phone running again

tragusman has got it right. Depending on what the issue is, you'll either recover nicely or your phone is toast. Flash the above stock firmware and give it a shot. Note that you'll likely loose your data and settings.
If you're new to flashing firmwares, check the great reference guide on where to find Odin and how to use it (this is the app you'll use to flash the above firmware).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
After flashing, try getting into recovery mode. If you can look for an error message under the standard menu. Can't get to d/l mode? You're probably in trouble. Get into recovery and see an error msg? Post the error here or google it for a solution. No error msg? You're probably ok - restart the phone.
Good luck.
Thanks guys.
I'm about to try it now, but before I start potentially breaking my phone even more, I was just thinking: Could I just send it back to Samsung? Would they fix it, or identify right away I have changed something and void my warranty.

[Q] New phone with 2.2 preloaded

Hello, I just recieved my new captivate, after returning old one on warranty, it came preloaded with 2.2 Froyo. My question is: can I still do a ODIN flash to get it back to 2.1? Thanks in advance for any help
Odin one-click flash to stock 2.1 worked for me after doing the official KB1 2.2 update via Mini Kies. Batch 1008 with 3-button combo download mode working.
Maybe I should have been more informative. The new phone came with 2.2 installed. I do not know if it ever had 2.1 on it. Using ODIN3 has the term "flash back to stock". Since this came with 2.2 I am assuming that 2.2 is stock. Will using ODIN3 give me a 2.1 (JF6) operating system even if it never had 2.1 installed on the phone? Also something else I am scratching my head about. The phone I am returning is an 1008 batch and the new phone is an 1007 batch. Is the new phone actually built before the phone that is being returned? Could this mean it at one time had 2.1 installed? Could it mean I recieved a refurbished phone? I was hoping for a new build thinking they fixed the problems of the old builds. Again thanks in advance for any help
there are 2 Odin3 programs, the Odin3 one click flash to stock (2.1 stock) and the odin flash anything you want Odin3 1.7 version.
yes that odin will do 2.1
what carrier are you? att or rogers? there are 2.2 flash and or upgrade packages.

hey bud...I have some similar problem...so I got this replacement phone after i bricked my good phone becoz of battery issue...now I was on continuum 3.1.1 but i decided to flash CM7. So I used Odin one click to stock. But I wasnt aware that my phone is one of those builds which looses 3 button combo....so i lost 3 button combo and i was frustrated I updated it to official froyo 2.2 from ATT using mini kies...now after researching a lot...I came across Odin with 3 button combo fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439
Now I am not sure, if I use this Odin...will i go back to stock 2.1 eclair with my 3 button fix back...as the description of this program claim that it works same as Odin one click but with 3 button como fix....
can anyone tell me if this wont brick my phone and i can go back to stock 2.1 with 3 button combo safely?

Well I managed to get a few questions answered both by the people responding to this post "Thank you very much" and customer services of Samsung and AT&T. Called Samsung and they confirmed that the batch # on my new phone makes it older than the phone I am returning. They also informed me that it was more than likely a refurbished model. This would take care of the question of if it ever had 2.1 installed. Called AT&T and explained my concern about recieving someone else problem phone and them sending me a model older than the one I am returning. They confirmed that it was a refurbished model. I will call warranty service again tomorrow and see what they can do. I would atleast expect a phone with newer manufacturing dates that may not have had the problems of the earlier builds to begin with.

yeah u r right...I had a nice phone from new batch..which never lost 3 button combo...then becoz of my stupidity i bricked it...acted innocent infront of ATT and got replacement, but this phone is reconditioned and is from that batch which looses it 3 button combo...which I didnt know and I lost it now.,,
but this phone as awesome battery life and GPS....i am on stock 2.2...and I upgraded it myself
24hrs later and thinking I have overreacted. I returned phone because of random shutdown issues and absolutely horrible gps (even after several rom changes). The replacement phone (refurbished) has an awesome gps and no problem with the random shutdown "so far". I got a lock outdoors as soon as I turned it on not even a second of wait time. I even got a lock in my basement within 15 sec. I test drove it today. Instant lock, perfect tracking, no putting me on side roads, no going thru intersection I have stopped at, turned when I turned and no loss of signal. In other words PERFECT! I think the gps is a hardware problem that has a fix. I don't care when the phone was built as long as it works the way it is suppose to. Now I just hope that after I flash a new rom it stays that way.

Ummm... my phone is one of that batch (1008), and when I flashed with one-click I did lose 3-button. But flashing back to stock with ODIN 3 gave me 3-button back, and I' be been able to use it every since, since I'm one of those people who always flashes back to stock whenever I change or update ROMs...though honestly, I never use the 3-button option. I root, add Clockwork, and get into download mode from there. Works for me... Flashing to stock with ODIN 3 (NOT the 1-click version!) should give you back 3-click, too.
The real issue to me is AT&T giving you a used phone and calling it new. Beyond being really tacky, isn't that kind of fraudulent? Or is there something in the contract that makes lying about that okay? And if it's the latter, why don't they just tell you up front that you might get a refurb to replace your new one?
Tacky, I tell you; just tacky...
Update. Just flashed my phone back to 2.1. Flashed the "Paragon RC6" rom. Note to self: make sure you send a few donations. Everything is working great life is good. Refurbished or brand new doesn't really matter at this point. Awesome phone that works awesome. This phone is my very first cellphone. I was clueless until I found this forum. Thanks to everyone that contributes to this forum and the dev's that make having this phone worthwhile.

I would admit this all is easy...i got my new phone in september and had almost flashed all roms on xda for captivate...but once i didnt charge the battery full and used odin 1 click...which bricked my phone...
now i got replacement phone...which was refurb and ATT guys told me that...but as my original phone was actually bricked (means dead..no hopes) I accepted it...but ignored the fact that it can loose 3 button combo...while i was flashing it to stock (having CM7 in mind to flash next) I suddenly realized that i lost 3 button combo (which is required for CM7). I felt betrayed...so i thought to forget flashing any rom and go to stock 2.2....BIG MISTAKE....after 2.2, i was not able to flash any update.zip...i tried for root, CWM, 3 button combo...always got same error E:/signature un verified..
So in desperation I used AIO 3.0...and yes i managed to get the famous phone-!-computer screen....lol I dont have Jig...so i got it replaced again...
atleast from all this i learned how to use ADB (to get into recovery and download without 3 button combo)
Now waiting for my next refurbished phone...

[Q] I think its Bricked..and odin doesnt work

hey guys i have a captivate that i tried flashing and was successful then i tried again and the screen went black. im not sure if my battery died during the process or what but idk what to do. I cant get into recovery mode, i can only get into downloading mode but none of the odin's ive downloaded have recognized my device today. they worked fine yesterday. then i tried "hemidall one click" to try and get it back to stock but no luck. also when i try to power on I get the "Cornkernel" loading screen since that was the kernel i had loaded when it was working, but it fills the bar then shuts off. so it seems like im going to be at the mercy of a computer program since i am unable to access anything on the phone, right? I recently upgraded to gingerbread before all of the flashing of the new roms. all i want is to get back to either froyo or gingerbread, i dont really care, heck ill even take 2.1 at this point. if anyone knows whats going on and can help me thatd be great.
Thanks
Remember to use a rear usb hub for destop and run as admin. Heimdall will mess up your odin drivers.
You may also want to check out the captivate connection issues thread.
Also, to clarify further on prbassplayer's point about Heimdall, it will write its drivers over the drivers assigned to the USB port you are plugged into when it detects your phone. So if you have 4 USB ports and you use port 3 for Heimdall, it would look like this:
1 - Odin port
2 - Odin port
3 - Heimdall port
4 - Odin port
All this means is that you'll need to be aware of the port you used with Heimdall, or just reinstall the odin drivers (they'll overwrite the Heimdall setup).
OK so i tried what you mentioned in that thread on the connection issue and unfortunately it didn't work. is there a way i could start fresh? like delete all the drivers from my computer and then try it again, or do u not think that would work? im open to any ideas/suggestions right now because i hate having an extra paperweight and the thought of buying a new phone.
Don't know if this'll help or even why it worked for me but, when I had problems with odin recognizing my phone, I reinstalled/repaired samsung kies and odin would work for at least one flash.
Note: used full odin (not oneclick)
Good luck
hey guys thanks a bunch i finally got it to work. i had to use a different computer like you said. What a great feeling to have a functional phone again..
Thanks Again!!
So i got the phone back up and running android 2.1 and I would like to get it back to the stock 2.3 I had before the whole mess of rooting and stuff. but when i try to upgrade with kies or straight on the phone it ends up failing and telling me to try it again. any ideas why this is happening? or how to fix it.

Kies sucks lol
look at my sig the first "go to" has the One Click Odin file to get you to stock and rooted 2.3 ...should take no more then 5 mins to do it
the link on that page for the 1 click odin doesnt work.
Try looking >>HERE<<. There are more one clicks there than you will ever need (hopefully)
Thanks I think I might try one of those. But considering what happened earlier in the week i want to clarify/ask a few ?s about that page. How do I know which Gingerbread to use of the 3 listed? How do I know whether or not to click the one with or without the bootloader? I'm new at this with android but I used to flash roms on my old windows mobile htc TILT.

if you have never flashed GB bootloaders, you need to. Just oonce will work from that time forward. After you flash bootloaders, it's best to avoid them. A bad bootloader flash is one of the few things that will turn a Captivate into a paperwight. About which GB to use, I would say KK4. Its the same as the Official KK4 that was released. So to recap, flash bootloaders only once, then use no bootloader packages after that.
Im not sure if I unlocked them or not honestly. I know i had the phone rooted at one point and was running Cerberus rom. is there any way for me to check?
If you don't know, flash them.
ok i apologize in advance if this is a stupid obvious question..i got the odin one click and i was looking at the page u referred to me to and im wondering what the kernel is for? you cant place it in the odin one click obviously so is that just to keep things together or do i actually need it?
The kernel links are just to use if you want to root the stock rom. You have to use full Odin for those. Stick with the one click until you feel more comfortable in flashing AND do a lot research before your next flash.
so i got the KK1 gingerbread working and everything seems to work fine but now my data doesnt work. So I cant get ATT 3g or edge or anything the only internet i recieve is wifi. anyone know why this is? or how to fix it. ive tried a reboot and nothing ive tried changing the settings under network settings.
