[Q] External SD card - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I just got my SGS a week ago, and have encountered some issues I would like some help with.
The external SD card I had in my previous phone is having some issues, sometimes when I go to the music player the album art is there and all of the songs, but when you click on a song a message shows saying "the file does not exist", same thing in the gallery, there are thumbnails but when clicking nothing loads.
According to "myFiles" there is indeed a SD card present but it only contains 2 unreadable files, and in the settings menu the amount of space is still correct accordingly to what is on the card.
After a reboot the phone media scans the card, and the files are back.
I tryed format the SD card from the phone but it didn't help.
Running the phone stock out of the box with 2.1

navigate to /sdcard/sd/
then you will see your real stuff
/sdcard = internal SD of the phone
/sdcard/sd = external SD you insert into the phone

Hey I had the same issue. Not sure what happens. I think it happens when I put the USB cable in. I downloaded some widget/app that can basically re-scan your media without you having to restart.
forget the name but check it out / search for it.

That is what i meant, in /sdcard/sd/, when i start the phone up all files are there, and then randomly disappear, both there and in musicplayer/gallery.
Hmm, but is such behavior normal, I mean it feels like it shouldn't be necessary to have a app. to constantly remind the phone of the SD cards content.
I'm curious if it's a hardware issue (SD card or phone) or just software..

Peculiar folder on storage card

Thanks in advance for any help.
Something created a folder on the storage card in my Tilt called "(" . It appears to be empty. I am unable to delete it. I even tried taking the card out of the Tilt and putting it in a card reader. XP also sees the folder, but I can't delete it. If I use iSilo and navigate to the storage card, the folder list blinks that folder, that is, it appears ... disappears ... appears ... etc.
Any help getting rid of the folder would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds annoying, have you tried a registry editor? I think you are worrying too much about it though if it has nothing in it.
It is annoying ...
as in the iSilo example I cited. If I'm in the root of the storage card in iSilo, I have to time the tap perfectly to select a folder because literally the "(" folder appears and disappears and every folder below it changes position.
I assumed I might need to use my registry editor, but I'm not sure where to look.
try formatting the SD card
Lol, i asnwered this on the ATT forums. Look there and hopefully it will help you
Yeah, I had that problem with a folder randomly showing up with a bunch of special characters for the name, which windows doesn't like and you can't do anything with. (On my old 2125 I had one show up that was empty, but the phone kept thinking it was like 2 GB full, but it was only a 1GB card!! weird!) Anyway, to get rid of it I had to pull the card out of the phone and put it into a card reader on my PC, then I pulled all of the data other than the erroneous folder off the card and saved it temporarily to the PC, and then I reformatted the card. Put all the stuff back on, and put it back into my phone. It was a pain, but it worked.
The problem is due to storage card corruption/file corruption. I see this on a somewhat regular basis (~1500 users). I believe it is caused when the device goes into standby while writing to the storage card. I thought Win Mobile 6 handled this better than Win Mobile 5 but maybe not.
It is best to reformat the storage card if this happens.

Storage Card Identity Crisis on Tilt

My storage card had an identity crisis after I took it out of my Tilt temporarily and plugged it into a card reader. It went from officially being known as "Storage Card" to "Storage Card 2" when I plugged it back in the device.
Because of this, when I go to play my MP3s using windows media player it displays an error message that says the file cannot be found. I even tried transferring them out to my desktop and they play just fine on there.
Could this be a problem with DRM since some of them are protected files?
Anyone have any idea? I'm dying here. Please, I need my music back!
Thx.
Try pressing reset, failing which, remove the memory card, reset the phone, then reinsert the memory card, if you have applications which load from the memory card, you will have to hit reset again after.
Please note I mean soft reset, not hard reset.
Thanks, if the issue is that some files are written to Storage Card 2, is there any easy way to convert them back to the original storage card path manually?
New files on the device work fine but not the original ones which may have been saved to the card when it was under the different name. Thanks.
I had that happen too, but I noticed it immediately.
Just had to delete the "Storage Card", which was (for me) an empty directory, then soft reset. Then plugged in the SD card.
Happens to me all the time. As khaytsus said just remove the card, delete the "Storage Card" folder, then reinsert the microSD card. There is no need to soft reset in most cases.
Hello, I have a recurrent problem with my storage card. It looks like empty, programs installed in the SC stop working, etc, but if I check the usage of the storage card it show as 2gb used ! (it is a 8GBs one)
It happened 2 times, and it is so anoying. I explore the card and only see the folder with the email attachments, all the other is gone.
Can it be a problema because sync from 2 different computers ? (wokr and home) ? but it do not sync the storage card, (I think)
Some Ideas ? I see nothing about a "storage card 2" or so, and I never remove the card from the device, it is always in.
can't found a real solution in the web
thank you if somebody can provide me a litthe light

HELP: Formatting a new SD for use with SGS?

Do you have to format a new SD card (Sandisk 16 Gb class2) in any special way before using it?
My brother is testing my new SGS for me (I live in Brazil, he is in USA), and he is reporting that the phone becomes SLOW with just the new card inserted, and sometimes it stops and says "preparing mass storage" or something.
Nothing copied or running on the card yet. Blank.
Stock JFB firmware.
Please help me. Is this possibly a hw problem with my phone?
I have just one more day left to return it.
Thanks,
Paulo
No. That is normal. Everytime you cold start/insert card or unmount from desktop it does a media scan to cache and thumbnail your media for use in Gallery or any media app. In the end it saves time as its all indexed. It gets annoying yes but without it your system would either not work or be slower. Its also on every android device.

But please note the the card is completely new and blank.
How much time should my phone be doing this "indexing"?
Shouldn't it be only once just after I insert the card and then stop?
It appeard that it is doing this indefnitely...
Please help.
Thanks,
Paulo
What I mean is that my brother is reporting that the phone is slower not just when you isert the card, but forever.
And it keeps saying "scanning for new media" every now and then.
It should have stopped indexing by now, shoudn't it?
Thanks.
It will scan the card every single time you reboot the phone or unmount/remount the card. For example when connecting the phone to your pc for uploading new files.

I've never just copied and pasted. Use an app (I use doubletwist) to transfer and see if that works.....
Are you sure they are mp3s? It sounds like you're using the iTunes hierarchy, which means you may be using its music format. That could be a cause.
Also, this is in the wrong section.

None of it would cause that. Are you sure it's not scanning your media? If not, then I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.
All of my music is in .mp3 format that was organized artist>album>song for iTunes, and it works perfect on my Captivate. If the phone is scanning your SD card, then it will bog the phone down significantly (especially my class 2 16GB external SD...so slow to scan, but cheap to buy).
Did you give it a few minutes for media to finish scanning?
Try a USB port on the back of your computer instead.
I had a similar problem when I first got the phone when transferring a large amount of files to an external SD card. The entire phone would become horribly laggy and even pressing "power off" it wouldn't ever fully turn off, requiring a battery pull to actually restart the phone. I tried loading media onto the SD card directly from the computer and everything worked fine and the phone was able to scan it without crashing. But copying files from external to internal (or vice versa) also caused the phone to react the same way.
The only thing I figure was that it was a VERY low-quality micro SD card (2 GB, not even SDHC, no idea what the class was). When I put in a 8 GB class 6 card, I never ran into this problem again. If this is happening while transferring to your internal SD card, I don't know what the issue might be; but if it's an external, try using a certified high-quality micro SD and see if the problem persists.
edit: I know you said it was to internal SD card, but try removing the external if you have one to see if the issue is still there (the internal would also behave oddly when I had a low quality SD in external even if I wasn't using the external).

HELP!!1 External SD Card Issues (Music, ROM, etc...)

I have searched high and low for the answer to this but only found 2 others with the same unresolved issue.
I got a Sandisk 32gb Micro SD card today. I put it in my phone and formatted it. It was all well and good until I wanted to put files on it.
Firstly, and most importantly for me, I cannot copy music onto the card properly. When I put music on I get one of two messages: either 'file type not supported' or 'file does not exist' - either of these messages will come up when a file is selected via the media player (I use winamp but have tried in the stock player and TuneWiki).
In terms of transferring files to the external SD I have tried:
- Copy/pasting from my PCs music folder
- Copy/pasting into the internal SD music folder from my PCs music folder (the internal accepts and plays files fine), then pasting them from the internal to the external
(I have also tried dragging and dropping)
- Loading them via winamp. (When I do this method it says that all files are transferred but when I unplug there is only a few files (out of the tens, hundreds or thousands I have tried to put on in any given time. Some files play but it dumps most into an 'Unknown Artist' folder and refuses to play them giving the prior mentioned error messages. Most of the files seem to be dumped in a directory on the SD card call 'LOST.DIR'. The files are given a numeric name and are an unknown file format.
- All methods I have tried have put a majority of files in the 'LOST.DIR' folder and the 'Unknown Artist' folder. Also, all methods tried have shown everything to be a success (i.e. all files showing up nicely in their respective folders, winamp shows 100% sync success), it is only when I disconnect my phone and check on it does it show how awry it has all gone. When I plug my phone back in the mess is then represented on my PC too. -
It seems to be very slightly more reliable when files are done in small chunks. In winamp if I copy a few files over, disconnect phone, re-connect phone and carry on it works a bit better but still drops most files.
My second issue (which is likely related) is trying to play ROMs from the SD card. I copied some PSX games and their save states to the external SD and opened them up. They appear to open but it just displays a black screen. I can load the games but they will ONLY play if I load up a save from when I was playing from the internal SD card. If I try to load up a new game that I haven't played before I am just stuck at the black screen. The app itself is running fine, or so it seems, I can still access and mess about in the menus.
I have not tried my GBA, SNES or Genesis emulators yet as when I tried to copy the ROMs over they just disappeared into the 'LOST.DIR' folder, I'll have to redeem those from my PC.
I have also tried to go via Kies for all of this but it will not acknowledge my phone. My phone is rooted, not sure if that matters to Kies.
I'm sorry if that is all a bit awkward to read, I find it difficult to explain. If you need any more info just ask Please help me! I've been at this all day!
Thanks guys .
Smells like fake card .
Ebay purchase ??? Honk Kong ???
Test the sd card in a sd card reader .
Fill it up with data it should take at least 28 GB
Long time to write data could be fake .
Try the Sandisk checking tools from the web site .
jje
Tried a different card. Only tried using music files but it worked which leads me to think that everything else will work too. So it seems you are right: fake card.
Thanks for your help man. I'll go and try to get a refund from that Hong Kong eBay seller, haha .
EDIT: Although. I uninstalled psx4droid because it wouldn't run my ROMs properly and then re-installed it. The sound is really crackly now, I know some other people have that issue but I never did. Also, my phone crashed twice this morning so I have to take the battery out, it has never done that before. Can fake cards mess your **** up?
