HELP!!1 External SD Card Issues (Music, ROM, etc...) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have searched high and low for the answer to this but only found 2 others with the same unresolved issue.
I got a Sandisk 32gb Micro SD card today. I put it in my phone and formatted it. It was all well and good until I wanted to put files on it.
Firstly, and most importantly for me, I cannot copy music onto the card properly. When I put music on I get one of two messages: either 'file type not supported' or 'file does not exist' - either of these messages will come up when a file is selected via the media player (I use winamp but have tried in the stock player and TuneWiki).
In terms of transferring files to the external SD I have tried:
- Copy/pasting from my PCs music folder
- Copy/pasting into the internal SD music folder from my PCs music folder (the internal accepts and plays files fine), then pasting them from the internal to the external
(I have also tried dragging and dropping)
- Loading them via winamp. (When I do this method it says that all files are transferred but when I unplug there is only a few files (out of the tens, hundreds or thousands I have tried to put on in any given time. Some files play but it dumps most into an 'Unknown Artist' folder and refuses to play them giving the prior mentioned error messages. Most of the files seem to be dumped in a directory on the SD card call 'LOST.DIR'. The files are given a numeric name and are an unknown file format.
- All methods I have tried have put a majority of files in the 'LOST.DIR' folder and the 'Unknown Artist' folder. Also, all methods tried have shown everything to be a success (i.e. all files showing up nicely in their respective folders, winamp shows 100% sync success), it is only when I disconnect my phone and check on it does it show how awry it has all gone. When I plug my phone back in the mess is then represented on my PC too. -
It seems to be very slightly more reliable when files are done in small chunks. In winamp if I copy a few files over, disconnect phone, re-connect phone and carry on it works a bit better but still drops most files.
My second issue (which is likely related) is trying to play ROMs from the SD card. I copied some PSX games and their save states to the external SD and opened them up. They appear to open but it just displays a black screen. I can load the games but they will ONLY play if I load up a save from when I was playing from the internal SD card. If I try to load up a new game that I haven't played before I am just stuck at the black screen. The app itself is running fine, or so it seems, I can still access and mess about in the menus.
I have not tried my GBA, SNES or Genesis emulators yet as when I tried to copy the ROMs over they just disappeared into the 'LOST.DIR' folder, I'll have to redeem those from my PC.
I have also tried to go via Kies for all of this but it will not acknowledge my phone. My phone is rooted, not sure if that matters to Kies.
I'm sorry if that is all a bit awkward to read, I find it difficult to explain. If you need any more info just ask Please help me! I've been at this all day!
Thanks guys .

Smells like fake card .
Ebay purchase ??? Honk Kong ???
Test the sd card in a sd card reader .
Fill it up with data it should take at least 28 GB
Long time to write data could be fake .
Try the Sandisk checking tools from the web site .
jje

Tried a different card. Only tried using music files but it worked which leads me to think that everything else will work too. So it seems you are right: fake card.
Thanks for your help man. I'll go and try to get a refund from that Hong Kong eBay seller, haha .
EDIT: Although. I uninstalled psx4droid because it wouldn't run my ROMs properly and then re-installed it. The sound is really crackly now, I know some other people have that issue but I never did. Also, my phone crashed twice this morning so I have to take the battery out, it has never done that before. Can fake cards mess your **** up?

Memory card issue

Ok, so I know this isnt technically a Kaiser issue, but I'm hoping someone else came across this and can help.
I have a 6gb memory card with all kinds of files and applications stored on there. I tried running TomTom today and it said "No maps found." I checked the memory card and there were like 3 files still on the card and everything else was gone. I used an adapter to explore the card on my PC and it showed the same files, but the odd thing was that there were a few GBs of storage in use yet I cant view the files.
Surprisingly, some apps that are installed on the SD card are still running including manilla TF2D, skyfire, pandora, google maps, etc. yet other files are inaccessible.
Anyone know how to restore access to these files?
Thanks!
Hamburg
Update:
I took the memory card out and the programs that I mentioned above still run. I guess they were installed on the device despite selecting to install on the memory card.
That still doesnt explain why when I explore the drive, and view the properties, the disc space shows several gigs in use even though the visible files add up to about 36kbs.
In case anyone's interested, I downloaded PC Inspector Data Recovery tool and was able to retrieve the lost files.
What was very odd though, was that I started to reinstall some applications, and at some point during the reinstallation, ALL of the missing files suddenly returned.
If you have this problem, I wouldnt suggest trying the latter until after you've used a data recovery tool, because if you install something and it writes to the sector of the disc where your lost data is stored then it will be gone for good.

MicroSD Car Messed Up

My SD card has started acting up on me. Recently, a ton of folders with gibberish symbol names showed up. I can't delete these folders in either my phone or my PC. These folders have nothing in them. I can't transfer files to or from it. While in my computer, the card window will occasionally freeze and tell me the thing has stopped responding. I have made sure the lock switch is open on the adapter. I'd like to flash a new ROM but the card won't even open in my PC. Says I need to format it before I can use it, but no method (freeware, Explorer, CMD) will work. I get thrown messages about how it won't work or whatever. In fact, I was trying diskmgmt.msc while typing this earlier but I got a BSOD memory dump. First time I've had one on this PC. Anyway, anyone know what I can do? I just want it to work, I paid a lot for this card. I have a feeling it's because I let the device format it, but I dunno. IF it helps, I'm running Win7 x64. Thanks.
Like you said, your MicroSD is probably done for. You might try to format it using your PC. But it probably won't work.
Some manufacturers offer lifetime warranty on flash memory so you might be able to swap it for a new one since this obviously isn't your fault. I've done so with at least two memory cards before (but then again I'm from Europe so it might be different for me).
I'm on my second MicroSD card, after I started getting warnings that certain files couldn't be accessed.
Actually, the second one (both are 8gb: first was a SanDisk, 2nd is a Kingston) gave me a warning yesterday.
Never has this problem with other phones... I don't know if the MicroSD format is prone to this sort of thing, or it is an interaction with the X1 - but it doesn't inspire confidence.
I think I will do a weekly copy of all files from the card onto my PC.

cannot convert file(random file) reached the end of the file

ok well im trying to clean off my 8 gb micro sd card so im copying all the files to my desktop, well every so often i get the error "cannot convert file(random file) reached the end of the file" iv tried changing the name, file type, the only thing i can do is delete it or leave it, now i can run the cab file and it works fine from my phone. Iv tried to use my usb card reader and tower card reader but niether will even read my card, anyone have any ideas on why this is happening &/ or have to fix this, iv had the card for a couple years and never any problems and this tilt almost a year any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated , thanks
btw i just noticed something new why is this [OP] next to some names and icons now, didnt notice it before
the "[OP]" next to a person's name within a thread being viewed indicates that this person started the thread you are viewing, i.e. he/she is the "original poster" or some such.
regarding your problem, i assume you are stuck with using activesync to access your microsd card (because you say no card reader will read the card)? when microsd cards start acting up, most people will suggest sticking it into your pc via a card reader to copy files and run data recovery software and to eventually reformat the card. once again, i am assuming this is out of the question because your card readers will not see the data on the card.
activesync's file system access is sufficient but not very flexible and fairly poor. i have noticed that the remote desktop client on windows mobile is able to make your device's microsd card available to the pc you are connected to via remote desktop during the entire session. you might want to attempt a copy via this kind of a connection.
another alternate is to try "schap's network plugin". this will allow you to map a folder shared on your pc (remember to give this folder full write access) onto your device's \Network folder. then you can freely copy/paste stuff to/from your pc using the device's file explorer.
final option is to copy problematic files on to your device's memory and see if activesync is able to read from the device's memory. this is really only feasible if the largest problematic file can fit into the limited free space available on the device's memory.
when you are completely done and satisfied with the files you have recovered, stick the card back into the card readers connected to your pc and see if you can get the card reformatted while its in there even though the current file system/data on the card is not being detected.
finally, remember that most microsd cards (like nearly all other things) have a limited life...so maybe the card just needs to be replaced with a spanking new one now.

I've never just copied and pasted. Use an app (I use doubletwist) to transfer and see if that works.....
Are you sure they are mp3s? It sounds like you're using the iTunes hierarchy, which means you may be using its music format. That could be a cause.
Also, this is in the wrong section.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
None of it would cause that. Are you sure it's not scanning your media? If not, then I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.
All of my music is in .mp3 format that was organized artist>album>song for iTunes, and it works perfect on my Captivate. If the phone is scanning your SD card, then it will bog the phone down significantly (especially my class 2 16GB external SD...so slow to scan, but cheap to buy).
Did you give it a few minutes for media to finish scanning?
Try a USB port on the back of your computer instead.
I had a similar problem when I first got the phone when transferring a large amount of files to an external SD card. The entire phone would become horribly laggy and even pressing "power off" it wouldn't ever fully turn off, requiring a battery pull to actually restart the phone. I tried loading media onto the SD card directly from the computer and everything worked fine and the phone was able to scan it without crashing. But copying files from external to internal (or vice versa) also caused the phone to react the same way.
The only thing I figure was that it was a VERY low-quality micro SD card (2 GB, not even SDHC, no idea what the class was). When I put in a 8 GB class 6 card, I never ran into this problem again. If this is happening while transferring to your internal SD card, I don't know what the issue might be; but if it's an external, try using a certified high-quality micro SD and see if the problem persists.
edit: I know you said it was to internal SD card, but try removing the external if you have one to see if the issue is still there (the internal would also behave oddly when I had a low quality SD in external even if I wasn't using the external).

Self-deleting videos on microSD

I have a problem (my friend also) on the Note, when I load videos on microSD, in any folder, they disappear after some time. I do not use Kies, but frequently I connect the phone with cable for external storage.
thanks
Hi,
no idea to solve?
Did you try doing a disk check?

...the strange thing is that a friend has the same problem...
^^ are those 720p videos ? or greater than 4gb in size ?
same issue
Most of the videos has been deleted from my micro sd card (32 gb) with my galaxy note. It is really frustrating, problem disappears if using phones storage. A fix is requested urgently cuz this not accaptable from samsung.

While connecting the phone to the PC it is possible that a program intended for synchronizing or importing media file to PC can delete the files from SDcard. So does "PMB Sony" for example. You can change it in options.
Same issue with samsung Galaxy s2
Same issue here. My device keeps deleting video files from my external 16gb microsd.
I put video files inside a folder (/media/video) and after some time the files disappear. The only thing that I do is plug and unplug from a pc mounting usb storage several times a day (i do not use Kies).
I also used a freeware program to recover deleted files from the microsd and found out that the files were marked as deleted (i had success in recovering).
This thing is starting to be very annoying.
I'm on MIUI 1.12.9.
Thanks
I confirm that I have the same problem.

If I store video on the phone memory (not inside te microSD), the problem persists,
without using Kies, where can I found the menu to change options?
thanks

This is true and I also can confirm this. I did not notice that my videos were missing until I saw this post and checked for my videos on my XD card and they were all gone What was odd was that the video which were transferred over from another computer to the XD card did not vanish but the videos which were recorded with this Samsung Note did all vanish WTF
I never did a sync either.
I really don't remember the used application 'cause I did it on a pc that i can not acces anymore. In any case, the application was free and i really found it on 5seconds search on google.
bye
I'm thinking of two things, neither of which are probably right
Firstly, I recently installed Window7 alongside my Linux Mint installation. On this I've noticed that if I copy files from Mint to the windows partition that Win7 often does a chkdsk thing on booting up and goes and deletes all these files ! I've never had this happen with any other version of Windows (Xp, etc). I'm wondering is there some filesystem 'tag' on your pc that makes the system think that file is corrupt or something and results in the files being hidden/deleted.
Secondly, I was looking on Amazon for a Sandisk sd card and I saw a review by a guy who said that many sd cards are fakes and not made by Sandisk at all. Apparently a lot of these have a much smaller capacity than claimed and as you add data they fill up and older data is destroyed. Here is the link

I never connected my Samsung Note to a Windows PC and the videos still vanished.
Same issue here..
First of all, I don't think it's a resolution issue because I have two similar videos, one disappeared while the other is still there.
Second of all, my videos are on the phone's memory and not an external sd.
If I go to folder details and check last modified date I notice that all folders from which videos have disappeared have been modified at the same time.
No solution?!
did anybody contact Samsung?
and could it be app "smart lock" causing this disappearance?
thanks
all of you developers out there.. anyone to help??
I might be wrong, but i think that those files aren't deleted at all. You may have a FOUND or LOST dir on you micro SD card with files in it that are the same size of the lost Videos.
I think this problem occures when you turn the phone off while it searches for media files on the card.
Try making a .nomedia file on your SD Card root folder, Stock players might not find any Videos after you've done that but you can easily open them with a Filemanager (ES FileExplorer).
.nomedia helped me

maybe I do not understand your proposal, but the problem persists if I put video in the memory of the phone (not external microSD) adn I do not find the file with File Explorer, so I think it is lost...
I remember some people complaining about this when the EVO 4G first came out as well & for some it seemed to be bad SD cards but there were also a lot of firmware changes happening so unclear about the determined cause. This is troubling & would not like to still have to worry about this if I purchase the SGNote. Sounds like backup & keeping an eye on this is necessary. Has anyone emailed Samsung?
