[Q] Need help - 2e recovery and or CWM - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys (and girls)
Ok, my problem is that I really want to flash the new DOCs rom. However im getting stuck on the part where the installation guide says to enter into 2e recovery. My phone stock boots into 3e recovery, and simply applying update.zip doesnt work.
A friend told me the problem is in the fact that I dont have 2e recovery - but that this can be fixed by installing Rom Manager. Now I have done this also flashed the CWM, the device is also rooted. I have tried flashing different versions of the recovery, however it gives me an error message upon pressing reboot into recovery: e: error in /cache/update.zip
(Status 2)
Applying multi-csc
Installation aborted
and it still enters "regular" recovery mode.
I have read the attached FAQ in docs thread, but it doesnt seem to adress the issue where one cannot enter 2e recovery.
- Note - found one page in the forum that said to go into the settings of rom manager and select "erase recovery" - and then reflash it. My rom manager doesnt have this option. It is the premium version however.
Is there possibly anyway of flashing docs rom through Odin? or what do I do ?
Kind regards.

The reason why you need 2e is to be able to install CWM. If you already have CWM, then move to the part where you copy doc's files to your SD....
try flashing hardcore's speedmod kernel K9A. that gives you CWM (if don't have CWM yet).

[Q] Point of desperation - Installing ROM

Normally I wouldn't post a thread, searching is quicker & requires less hanging around...but I am at my wits end now!
I am trying to install a new ROM on my phone but everything I try causes me issues.
I have got to the stage where I am trying to install a ROM (Darkyys). I have downloaded the ROM and put it into my internal SD card, home directory.
I have installed ROM manager, flashed clockworkMOD Recovery, and have restarted into recovery mode from that.
Now, the recovery mode is blue writing (if that helps).
I have cleared everything & go down to ''apply sdcard:update.zip'' and I get an error message which says:
'' E:signature verification failed. Installation aborted.''
Now, I have googled every tutorial, every error message and nothing has brought details up on how I get out of this loop.
Can anyone shed any light on it?
Cheers guys
edit: The recovery mode is 3e, and has - For BML - on it, if it helps?
the blue writing,, i think that is stock recovery mode, u need to get clockworkMod you will have to download that and flash it through recovery using the process you have already been trying for darkys rom..
when you have clockwork mod, your selecting the wrong thing. you wanna select update from sd card. then select chooze zip from sd card. then there you will see darkys rom (looks something like Darkyys vXX-wipe version.....zip)
Thanks for the post mate, the only options I have are;
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
format internal SD-card
Which is what's throwing me off currently!
yes get yourself clockworkMod from here: http://www.multiupload.com/5CUIK88JM0
once downloaded put it on your sd card (internal) then apply sdcard:update.zip ( you may need to do this more than once) when its done the recovery menu will be different. than you can flash darkyys ROM
When I open ROm Manager, the top link says 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery', I select this first and it seems to install it fine. Below it ssays:
Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.1
Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 2.5.1.1
Selecting the option below to 'Reboot into recovery' just brings me back tot he blue writing above!
edit: Ill try that now, thanks mate!
Thanks mate, though I am now getting the error message:
E: Failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation Aborted.
Damn
thats weird.. what version of darkys rom are you trying to flash, you could try flashing speedMod kernel thru ODIN, takes 10 seconds and will remove standard recovery and replace with clockworkMod. then you can flash any rom you want. and even option to root/unroot.. built in lagfix and tweaks. very good kernel im running it now.
The latest version...8.0. I cant even get to the stage of the flashing the ROM though, the recovery mode is just not playing ball.
I have spent all evening trying to sort this, I don't suppose you could give me a brief run down on ODIN could you? Searching brings up everything under the sun!
edit: I am downloading it now.
your downloading what ?
I have downloaded ODIN, but am struggling to find instructions on it. I can gather it is another form of installing a ROM onto the phone, but you need to do so in the download mode?
edit: downloaded ODIN, have the .pit file and the .tar file in a separate folder, how do I flash the ROM...is that done using ODIN? Sorry for the questions, struggling to find usable instructions that explain the steps properly.
http://touristinparadise.blogspot.com/2010/11/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to-install.html
Thats step by step guide to flashing a kernel.. that will put CWM as default recovery.. you dont have to keep the kernel as darkys 8.0 has its own built in voodoo kernel which is also really good.
but flash the kernel in the link above first ^^^ as that will allow you to flash anything you want thru CWM then you shudnt need to use ODIN again really..
Cwm only works on 2e recovery not 3e. Download cf root for your firmware and flash it with odin. Put the cf root file in the pda section and do nothing else. Put phone in download mode, connect to computer and hit start on odin. Done. You will have 2e recovery and can now flash darkys or other.

thats another way of doing it yes. thanks for pointing that out sxi200
cf-root attached,
I ran ODIN & followed those instructions to the letter. My phone has been sat there for 10mins now and ODIN hasn't changed off 'SetupConnection'.
How long does this take, is it normal? Thanks again for your help!
I take that file, put it in ODIN folder & select it instead of the speedmode Kernal?
are you trying to flash darkys WIPE version or NO WIPE version ?? flashing a kernel only takes ten seconds.. does it not say pass in the top box on ODIN ??

yes u have to extract it first to get the .tar file
Some progress, I have got the 2e recovery mode now. I went to apply sdcard:update.zip, hoping to change the recovery mode over to CWM...but it only looped back to where it was before...the 2e recovery screen with apply sd card, reboot, and wipe data & cache being displayed.
Tried it for a second time & I am now in the CWM recovery mode, with the green lettering. Only issue now is I can't select (using home button) any of the options, i can scroll up and down though!
edit: power button does select, not home...seems to be doing something now! Will report back shortly!
haha that got me first time i installed CWM if you flash ROM it can take a while to boot, sometimes on my phone upto 15-20mins so dont panic if your phone doesnt respond, just keep your eye on the writing on CWM once it says update complete / successful all is good.. it will boot eventually.

[Q] Problem Reinstalling Packages with UXJL1

Hi Guys,
So here is my problem:
I updated my Captivate from Samsung to Froyo.
I rooted my with Super One Click.
I then downloaded ROM Manager from the Market.
Then used it to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery (Current Recovery 2.5.1.2)
My problem is that when I boot into recovery mode, I click on reinstall packages and it gives me the following error:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
I am not running J16, my baseband says I896UXJL1.
I want to make sure that this works so that I can look into using other ROMs.
Thanks in advance.
Josh da Silva
i believe this is caused by recovery 3e when you tried to get into recovery using rom manager. it requires some kind of signature of the rom.
you need to copy update.zip to your sdcard root folder first and then shut down your phone and use the key combo to get into the recovery mode instead. you may need to apply the changes twice in the recovery mode.
another way to do that is by using android sdk.
I would first try moving update.zip to sdcard (check for updates first), then try using the 3 button to get to recovery and apply it. If that doesn't work, I'd say your probably on a bad recovery, and you should probably flash to stock (Eclair
) using Odin 1 click, available at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
You can also read there how to use it. I would flash to stock, then go to a proper 2.2 ROM that is widely supported (Perception, Phoenix). Good luck, don't brick your phone.
This makes sense but:
I already have an update.zip in my root folder of my internal SD. Is there something I'm missing here?

Clockwork Mod Recovery not properly flashing (Captivate)

tl;dr below
I've recently flashed back to JI6 with designgears' ODIN Low REV0 and re-rooted, I downloaded ROM Manager from the Market and "flashed clockwork mod recovery" for the Galaxy S Captivate and chosen "reboot into recovery" and "install rom from sd card" each time following proper procedure and each time it takes me to stock recovery 3e instead of CwMR and when I try to "reinstall packages" I get the E: cannot verify update package installer blah blah.
tl;dr Clockwork Mod Recovery's being uncooperative, to say the least, and I just want to flash a new ROM. Please Help
ji6 its not stock, it is leaked froyo. That is why it is not working. Wrong odin
Thank you, I had a hunch that was the problem but I've done it from JI6 in the past. Oh well, thanks again.
EDIT: still not working, flashed to JF6 installed and flashed Rom Manager/CwMR and it still boots into recovery 2e instead of clockwork when installing ROM from SD card, I'm also still getting the e: cannot verify update package error
please read this and apply the fix:

[Q] Unable to flash CWM

I'm running rooted stock 2.2 on an I897, and I am unable to find a solution to get into CWM recovery instead of 3e. I've tried replacing the recovery file, chmod 777 the /system/bin fails, mounting the directory does not help either, reinstalling ROM Manager and reflashing CWM does not help either.
When I hit "Reinstall Packages" in 3e...
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Am I missing something?
EDIT:
I got the AIO toolbox to work. After selecting a ROM, I get the same error as above. What am I doing wrong?
Flash a 2.2 kernel via odin that has cwm. Imo, its the easiest way.

Which one would you recommend?
I also forgot about sgs kernel flasher app. Sorry, it's been awhile since I've dealt with 3e recovery. I've used this kernel in the past
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989298
Install sgs kernel flasher
Put kernel.zip on ur sd card
BU current kernel via sgs kernel flasher.
Flash via sgs kernel flasher.
After flash screen will sit on overstock screen for awhile. You'll hear a robotic women talking. Be patient, this is normal

^^ sorry the above link is not a link. I'm on my phone and for some reason copied links only seem to actually paste as links half the time.
Read this [HOW TO] e:signature verification error/aka 3e recovery mod and workarounds , it's well documented
As for a kernel, most 2.2 kerenls have CWM built into them, so , go back to the thread you choose your rom from and see if the Dev has recommended one , if not keep reading to see what the majority of people are using. The Dev will also explain the best way to flash said kernel and rom. I'm going to assume this is your first flash so read, read, read ! And if you are still not comfortable go to youtube and search for specific rom , there is probably a vid on how to.
My bad, look under this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1161102 [HOW TO] e:signature verification error/aka 3e recovery mod and workarounds
Having some issues as well.
I'm rooted on stock froyo from ATT. I have installed the no sig recovery file so i can flash cwm following instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991
and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
to no avail. After reflashing cwm, I try to reboot into recovery and my phone gets stuck on att splash screen...wtf !!!
I cannot use odin since i don't have access to a pc and heimdall does not work on my mac...sigh...
Help anybody ??
update to my problem: I re-installed stock recovery file in /system/bin and I can't go back to the 3e recovery screen using any of the buttons combo methods ( and i used to be able to?!!_)
Ok remedied my own problems and hopefully this will help others
(mods feel free to move this to anywhere relevant since i cannot post to dev)
After hours of frustration, victory!!!
as stated above I have an att captivate stock froyo 2.2 rooted with superoneclick
when I used the 3 button combo it allowed me to go into 3e recovery (useless)
when I installed the 3e mod recovery no sig http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213 I was no longer able to enter 3e recovery using any of the 3 button combo methods (see post above) and therefore I could not reinstall packages and flash CWM. Trying to reboot into recovery from Rom Manager did not work either (stuck everytime on att splash screen!)
What finally did it was replacing recovery file with method in above thread, flashing cwm and then booting into recovery with adb: adb reboot recovery
I then choose the option to reinstall packages twice and there it is CWM...Bingo

[Q] Rom Manager/ClockworkMod recovery - need help

I have installed Rom Manager (paid version), and clicked the "Install ClockworkMod Recovery" button.
It asks for the device - selected Samsung S Captivate (which is what my phone is).
It asks for (and gets) root, pops up a message saying that it has downloaded ClockWorkMod Recovery, then seems to do nothing else.
If I then click on Backup Current ROM, it presents a name for the backup (date and time), then re-boots the phone into recovery.
No backup happens, and the recovery is the Samsung one.
So the installation of ClockworkMod Recovery seems to have failed.
Tried several more times - same result. Tried installing recovery a few times too.
Looked at the filestore -- the clockworkmod recovery download is there.
Deleted Rom Manager, re-installed - tried again - same results.
Any suggestions???

First, you need to be rooted. If you are rooted already, when you get to the Samsung recovery, is it the 3e recovery? if so, you need to get around that first be reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
Once you get around 3e recovery you can flash whatever you want. Report back, let us konw how it goes.
edit: oops, just noticed that you did say you have root when you mentioned you allowed root access for Rom Manager.
Reboot to Recovery and select "reinstall packages". --- u may have to do it twice, but then u should be in CWM Recovery... Unless u have the stock 3e recovery as stated above.

Ok - loaded the modified 3e recovery binary.
Seems to be working, because now when I boot into recovery I see:
-- Movi_check Start..||
checksum confirmation need_checksum[0]
Not need checksum confirmation
...
But still can't get clockworkmod recovery to load.
Tried loading an old version, followed by re-loading the current version.
Backup Current ROM ... and still see the Samsung recovery utils message,
and of course, no backup.
Ok -- lets try reinstall packages twice ...
Ok - that did it.
Thanks!!
As said in the post above your last one, you do have to select Reinstall packages twice to get into CWM. Are you selecting it twice?
edit: just saw your post above. glad you got it working.
Ok - now some random questions (for my education):
First, any idea why it might take TWO re-installs of packages for things to work?
It always makes me a bit nervous when repeating an operation has different effects. Software is supposed to be deterministic!
Next, I assume that installing clockworkmod recovery just replaces the "recovery" binary in /system/bin (?).
If so, why didn't (couldn't?) I just get hold of a single binary and drop it into /system/bin in place of the standard recovery binary?

As far as the re-installing packages twice, you should only have to do that once. now when you reboot to recovery, or 3-button boot to recovery it should go right to CWM.
And I have no idea about the single binary thing. I just followed instructions as you did to get it working. Hahaha!
Honesty on a forum -- I like that!
Just did a bit of poking around ... it doesn't replace the restore binary, looks like it uses that to load CWM -- if you issue a "reboot recovery" you end up in the standard recovery. If you run reboot into recovery from Rom Manager, you can see it loads the original recovery first, then jumps into CWM.
I suppose this is actually a good thing, because you always have the old recovery to fall back to.
Thanks a lot ... I would probably never have found the 3e restore replacement without that pointer.
Philip
