Hey guys,
I haven't been able to find very much on this, so if you guys can help, that'd be great.
This morning, I woke up, and my phone said "low on space". I tried everything from a reboot to taking the battery out, etc. Then I went into Menu>Setting>SD and Phone storage, and something caught my eye. The "Available Phone Storage" area was losing memory as I was looking at it! It decreased from 500kb, and settled down somewhere around 28kb. And two days ago i had 30MB!!! How did this happen?

The only thing I can think of being a culprit would be an app that needs to be downloading tons of data. I know the XDA app downloads data when you view new forums... do you use that a lot?

Ok, try this. Do a fresh install of whatever ROM you're using, and don't install any extra apps. See if you start to lose space like you are right now. Then, install the apps one by one, and you'll see which app is taking up your free space.
Have you tried a wiping and restoring your ROM? That may be your only option. Strange issue to have

+1...beat me to it
my wifes was doing this, i noticed the "contact storage" was almost 80mb! She has over 300 friends on FB and its set to refresh that every 2 hours. Try clicking on menu-settings-then accounts &sync... they are set at default to every2 hours. it would freeze her phone and couldn't receive texts or calls until its don't refreshing sometimes too more than an hour. not sure if this is a complete fix or not just tried it earlier today.
Its the HTC Mail app possibly. There are temp files building up. Only way to clear them is to be rooted and delete them with a file manager.

Check out the attached screen shot. That's from Better Battery Stats. Whatever it is, it's eating up my battery. Battery life has been half what it used to be. Any idea what *backup* is and how to keep it from running all the time?
Also, I installed Nitrodesk Touchdown and used it for email on my exchange account for awhile, but it didn't improve the email delay issue so I reduced it from push email to polling once every 24 hrs., but it's still running a lot. Any idea how to reduce that?

You may have enable option 'Keep backup of android device' while adding google account, just disable it
Thanks, that was it. I disabled it and froze Nitrodesk Touchdown, and my battery life shot up. Like 35 hours instead of 15.
I have the same issue on my I9100. How can I disable the backup function afterwards?
Edit: Found it

Hah! I love that. It is a setting to send all your passwords to Google, and it is under 'Privacy'!
Luckily I automatically unchecked that when I set up the account. I mean, seriously, rely on their security? What kind of security plan is that for anyone to adopt?
Does the Google backup really use a noticeable amount of battery? I like the convenience of it, but I'd turn it off for better battery life.

should i uncheck both options?
Back up my data
Automatic restore
i didnot understand the use of Automatic restore. when we update apps, we get our old data back. if i uncheck this will i lose saved data from older version?
edit: both options were checked for me. i unchecked it immediately. any other such hidden settings i might have missed? hope the battery life increases now.
Once you uncheck first option, other will disable automatically. B'coz if it dont backup your data, there is no question to restore it.
With this unchecking you wont lose anything right now. it is for next use, In case of you hard reset, it will restore some data automatically, in case of you have enable it.
But better you can use titanium backup or mybackup pro to do this n make schedule to backup at desired time. It won't kill your battery by sync all the time.
I never enable this function.
Had this same problem with my S3, unchecked the boxes after reading this. Is the something we can freeze in Titanium backup aswell? All i can see is /system/app/backuprestoreconfirmation
out of 7 hours on time it kept my phone awake for 5 of them! its mental.
Just unchecked the backup option. Note that google doesn't back up you phone constantly, it only happens a few times a month.
But why take chances?
Does this option interfere with the contact back-up from my gmail adress ?
These wakelocks are a major issue in all androids...
I had these wakelocks with my Motorola Milestone (because of WiFi, GPS, ...) and now on the Note with several ROMs. It should not be so easy for a userspace app to raise such a lock ... maybe some developer can write an app that notifies the user if the device does not sleep? And, even better, ask for killing and deinstalling the misbehaving app, if possible, even from the market...

There is an app already for that.. I'm not sure if it had been suggested already before but it is called CpuSPy (look for it in google play). What the app simply do is to monitor in the background and constantly you can tap on it and see if your phone is in a very deep sleep or not (it has a bar to determine how much or how little your phone goes into deep sleep). Also you can try to install Betterbatterystat(also from google play) to see which app or apps are causing the wakelocks on your phone. After you've verified those 'misbehaving app/s', then that'll be the time you can uninstall /remove it for yourself. Killing it won't do any good at all, because the moment you restart your phone, the said process/app would simply start back again as well. You need to really uninstall it thru Titanium backup.
On the side note. I don't think there will ever be an app that you can automate to uninstall any 'misbehaving apps' in your phone as Google generally has laws on it, governing some stance that says something to the effect as "no apps can be allowed to violate or remove other apps on the phone automatically". It would still be the user's discretion to manually uninstall those rogue apps by himself on his phone.
Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers!
What does the "data" mean here? Like Titan Backup?
But every time I flashed a new ROM, it seems like I still need to retype my WIFI password and no app data was restored
Ok, i'm running the latest gingervolt rom with supercharger and go launcher instead of adw. I have been missing a large number of texts. I can have 2-3 friends sitting in the room with me send me texts and i will get maybe 1 out of 3 if that. I have tried going into clockwork and clearing out the dalvik and cache and such, and have done everything short of a full factory restore. Has anyone had issues such as this? Is this an issue with the phone or with verizon? I use texts to keep in touch more than phone calls so this is a huge problem for me...
I had this happen to me after using supercharge, try different memory settings. If you set the memory in a way your phone don't like it can killing you mms app in the background

To be honest i'm not even sure how to modify the v6sc scripting... Everything so far as rom/scripting are concerned are at the default settings they came with... How does one change the memory management to make it work?
When you run the script it will recommended settings for you based on your device... Just go with that, select the item number that corresponds to your device and run it, use script manager from the market
Run the script as SU.
Back up just in case.
If you have a back up now try a restore to see if messages come back.
Try clearing cache and dalvik

Right before the .902 update my swipe to unlock screen disappeared. I have since run the update hoping that would fix it. It did not. I re-rooted my phone, ran a backup with Titanium Backup, and performed a factory reset. The swipe to unlock screen came back and worked until i got to the point of restoring system data with Titanium Backup. At this point i am stuck with a phone that when woken goes right to the home screen without having to swipe. Given the timeline of when it stopped working again it has something to do with system data, but i have no idea what. Does anyone know what system data i should choose not to restore in order to regain this functionality?
you might have frozen a system app i would start freezing app by app till you find the culprit or follow the thread labeled apps you can freeze or something like that..
I have never frozen anything with the Titanium Backup, I use it strictly for backup and restore. I just double checked and nothing is frozen.
Try enabling disable loxkscreen I thinks it under sec rity maybe wiping dalvic and cache could do it sometimes that works for some odd reason

Now that I think about it what exactly are you restoring in titanium meaning apps system app etc if you are restoring system app that might be the problem restore regular apps only see if that does it
Sent from my XT875 using XDA App
I'm not sure. I don't think so. I'm pretty new at this stuff.
Will that mean that I'll have to re setup all my ringtones, start all my games at the beginning, etc. if i don't restore the system data?
most likely its play your games from the begginging or keep your save point and have no lockscreen i am not 100 percent sure but that is the only thing i can think of i had to do that once it wasn't a lockscreen issue but i was a consistant force close issue reset titanium and didn't do system apps and it didn't force close anymore sometimes titanium is a problem someone chime in if i am off my rocker!!
let me ask this, what i would care about the most is not losing my texts. Do you know what system data would be responsible for that?
Not sure but I think there a SMS saver app don't know for I don't really care about texts
Sent from my XT875 using XDA App
there is one its called SMS backup and restore

Hello!
I have a question,i have a 40-50 aplication that work in background, when i open task killer and start ,always is open 40 or 50 system or user application ,i use a task killer every 20minutes and always is the same. How can i permenetly shut down that open aplications, becouse it drain my battery very fast and i can use my phone only 5 hours.
What aplication is the best for task killer and how can i solve this problem?
Is nessesery to be open so many working aplication? Is this have effect on battery?
Sorry for my bad english_
Thx in advance!

40-50 apps? I guess it's showing you the running processes and not apps. Some of them maybe system processes. And you can disable the apps through settings-applications-running-click on a app and disable. And 5 hours battery life isn't very bad if the usage is continuous with WiFi on!
Yes, i think that is a process running. I dont use wi-fi only gprs and still 5 hours of battery is a very litlle time to use_

Look 5 hrs when youre using your phone constantly isn't very bad! How old is your battery? Do hit thanks if i helpes
Battery is 2 months old.. but i wont to solve problem with that process that open in background,is that also normal? To be so much open, some of that is process but some of that is program..i will put a screenshot..
RUNNING PROGRAM:50!! I DONT USE HALF OF THAT BUT STILL IS OPEN,how can i close em down?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
It isn't normal for so many processes to be running. You are using the Touchwiz firmware. When you restart your phone and start an app, say messaging, it takes a certain time to open. Now when you close it(Not force close), and open messaging again, the time required for it to open will be significantly lesser than the last time as the process is running in the background. What I'd suggest yoy to improve your battery life is you make it a habit to periodically close the recent apps(long press home and slide the apps sidewards). And for apps like viber, uninstall them if you don't use them because apps relating to IM like gtalk, viber, skype, whatsapp will always run in the background. And do go to settings-battery to check out the battery consumption and you'll know the culprit there
Try this app Greenify if your phone is rooted, works wonders

Ya. Greenify is able to hibernate downloaded apps.

or you can try go to settings > developers options > limit background processes > and set limit to 4 process only, it doesnt affect stability and it boost performance a bit for me
I think it can help a little,..

As a general rule, free RAM is wasted RAM (except when it gets too low): http://www.androidcentral.com/ram-what-it-how-its-used-and-why-you-shouldnt-care.
As you will read, task killers are additionally counter-productive, because most of the killed apps will restart, using more battery and cpu. The most sensible way to preserve battery and resources it to use app like Autorun Manager or Autostarts, with which you can disable specific triggers causing selected apps to autorun.
If you care about battery saving, you can find more info in those two threads:

But can I root the phone and get access to system and root files but I want to keep this official ROM but still have rooted phone, is that possible?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Very much possible bro. Just root the phone, don't install any new ROM. There are very safe threads on how to root here in the android development forum. The PhilZ method is very easy and recommended.
What about upadete? If I root the phone,if there be an official update can I download and update the phone or 4.1.2 is the last that this phone will get? When I root the phone then I will can turn off this background programs and process?

Follow that link above. And after you root, you'll be able to use apps like greenify and the others suugested earlier in the thread. The app greenify is very useful, developed by a xda member, it allows you to hibernate apps so that a non-system process starts only when you use the app and not by itself. And yes you'll be able to update though im not sure if there will be a 4.2.2 update for note any soon. Anyway once you root, you can always install a supported custom ROM with the highest android version!

Yes. It is possible to have stock rom with root. Try searching for philz kernel. Get the one that matches your rom and flash it in recovery mode. But of cause your recovery will be changed to CWM recovery.
And it is also possible that you will not he able to.get OTA or Kies update anymore.
