Hi folks. New member. Also a new owner of Samsung Captivate. I just bought it yesterday. My provider is AT&T.
I want to root it so I can tether, ssh, etc?
However, I've see few posts related to Captivate and only one thread got answered. So is rooting Captivate unreliable?
I also couldn't find the root HOWTO for gaining root access on a Samsung Captivate. Can anyone please help?
Thanks,
Neil
Same here, new device, can run sw to root phone but does not work -> Failure To Root -- read below ->
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little new to this but the ATT Captivate does not do much after rooting the device.
I ran the Captivate One Click Root program, and it did indeed install the files and after selecting the volume down arrow the device reboots.
The Superuser Icon is there under applications, but if I put any APK on the device or pull one from other markets it is still blocked from installing.
Two problems:
When selecting the superuser icon the program launches but nothing displays.
Running any other apk displays the message "Install Blocked for security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market." [arguhhhh!]
I am sure others will run into this. I just picked up this device and can forge some ground if anyone has suggestions on how to proceed next ???
Need to enable side-loading. But it's been so long since I've enabled it on a "stock" ROM I forgot how
use SuperOneClick to enable non market apps

I used CLShortFuse's app here - worked beautifully - thanks dood

Hi guys,
I'm new to Android, and had a Samsung Captivate from my carrier Rogers Canada. I have updated it to Froyo 2.2, and everything is working fine for 3 weeks now (although I have At&T crap apps, and AT&T home screen when I reboot it. I wanna root it to do the following changes/updates:
1- Install another fonts/languages
2- Remove AT&T aapps
3- Fix GPS
any opinions on how? remember I run Froyo 2.2 and I can't see the SuperOneClick app on Android Market.
Thanks

Best thing you can do to this phone is put on custom roms. They have all that.

CUSTOM roms are already rooted. it sounds like you are on the leaked FroYo rom and not a custom.
this page (read carefully) will root you, enable sideloading, and allow you to remove ATT apps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797397
there is also the superoneclick.... IT IS NOT IN THE MARKET. it is a download on these forums. it is something you run from your PC
Thanks a lot guys ... you're so helpful. I will try to do it when I get some free time... by the way Pirateghost is there any way to change my froyo to CUSOM roms instead of the leaked froyo?

Hello folks,
Well I recently made the switch from iPhone OS to Android , picked up a used Nexus One in pretty good shape, no scratches, like new and what not, the phone is amazing BUT I am having a hard time understanding some stuff (I thought I was getting a stock N1, and it seems it has been loaded w/ custom ROM and is rooted and unlocked. -which not bad in my opinion, but...
I still have some questions, I am trying to update to Froyo 2.2, and im not sure if I will ever get OTA since the phone has been messed around with and if i manually update to 2.2 it will cause trouble.
1) When I boot the phone it shows the "lock" to be opened, so I am assuming it is oem unlocked, the phone has working WiFi tethering (just like in 2.2)
2) also in the menu of the phone there is an app "superuser permission" which thats why assume the phone is also rooted
And finally In the "About phone" I get the following:
firmware 2.1-update1
baseband
32.36.00.28h_4.06.00.12_7
kernel
2.6.34-cyanogenmod
mod version
cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3
build
epe54b
I have reset the phone to factory settings, but the same info comes up everytime. the phone runs flawless, no lags, overall i love the phone.
And finally if anybody knows please feel free to share, I am trying to open port 80 on the N1 while it is running Wifi tethering and the only way i have found to do this is if the N1 is rooted, correct me if im wrong... i have a rovio that is refusing to connect to the N1s network...
Any positive input will be highly appreciated! thanks!
Your not very confused!
Your phone is unlocked and has root. its running cyanogenmod-5.0.8-n1-test3.
You can install a custom froyo rom without too much of a problem from recovery. Remember to nandroid-backup everything from recovery first.
Get into recovery by holding down the volume down button as you press the power button to power on the phone.
Heres an example of tethering via usb/forwarded port
http://blog.tangorangers.com/2009/02/tetherbot_android_and_slackware_how_to/
you can install 2.2 with no problem but you have to manually do it. you might get a notification for ota's but you won't be able to install them. just install it manually.
Man you guys are awesome! thanks for clearing this up for me.

Yeah man, you're money. For a used phone it is set up in possibly the best way possible for someone new to android and ready for you to throw the new CM6 ROM on there. You even have the proper radio already. You're good to go.
You can install Froyo in various ways. If you want total stock you can follow the instructions on this link and let OTA froyo install itself. If you need root you can download that from HERE
This method requires SDK installed with Fastboot on your computer with mandatory USB Drivers.
Or you can go the very easy way and use ROMs that is allready cooked, ready to flash in recovery right over your old ROM, like the link that is in my signature. It works great for me and is pretty much stock with root and a couple of extras you can delete via ADB if you don't need them..
Just download the Rom, drop it on the root of your SD Card and flash away in Recovery. all done!
What you are running is a test version of Cyanogen which is not the stable version. So it seems the previous owner didn't bother flashing it.
i have a rooted htc hero cdma sprint phone.
firmware 1.5
build # 1.56.651.2 cl85027 release keys
software version 1.56.651.2
i rooted this by using this
what i want to do is go to 2.? software without losing root access.
i did not go to step 3 on that page, because all i wanted was to use the tether program.
what is a rom i should use,and how to use it, to still have root access and be able to go to the 2.? software?
thanks to anyone who responds
flash the .5 version of the rom(RUU) and then root again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
thats how i did it with the newest update. after that you can flash nfinites .6 sw version to have the latest stock sw while retaining root.
i hope that that is clear...if you follows the guides on here, everything will go very smoothly
ok
im lookinking for the .5 version of the rom,but i dont know what that is. i did go to the page and can follow the directions when i understand what that is
Now that you're rooted, all you have to do is flash nfinitefx45's Stock de-odexed ROM -- it is the latest official 2.1 release from Sprint, with root access (super-user permissions), wifi tether, and Apps2SD support added. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267 Follow all the directions there.
You can ignore the post above -- you don't have to run the 2.1 RUU in order to run a 2.1 ROM. I am running the ROM I listed and I'm still on the 1.5 root.
thanks
thank you i will try that now.
just a what if ?
what if i update to stock 2.1 with no update and then root from there? will that work? or will i be "barred" from doing that by some thing?i was just asking because reading about the rom you showed me there were some things that do not "work" correctly or just didnt work at all.i know that by reading all the coments.
just a what if
thanks
Yes, you can upgrade to the official 2.1 RUU using HTC Sync if you want. There is a way to root that version too but it's located in a different post in the Development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
thanks again
thanks again leaf
all i want is to have the most up to date or most powerful device i can have still with the root access, not to much to ask for seeing how i pay my bill every month.
Hey check it out I'm running 2.1,thanks again.

HTC restart problems
Hi to all,
I bought a new HTC model A6288 G3 + Hero and I pressed the button "Return to factory settings" with both SIM and microSD removed. Window opens to restart Windows, then the indication is "Tap the screen to set up your Windows Phone." I clicked and pops with "align screen" after I used the stylus to align. Hence no longer happen. I can go one way or window. To turn off your Pocket PC must remove the battery.
In the Add / Remove Programs I have left only three programs, but to Explore My Windows Mobile-Based Device Windows folder there(with activesync help).
How can I solve this problem, if anybody knows? Thanks very much.
@dankdank11 -- Glad you got everything figured out!
@cj15pas -- I think you have posted in the wrong forum. This one here is for the Sprint-based Hero that is running Android, not Windows. You should go post your question in the Q&A of the other HTC Hero: G2 Touch forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=508
I rooted my phone (I think) using I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe (I think). Looking at the phone with SUPER MANAGER the ENABLE ROOT function is NOT checked off. Does that mean my phone is not rooted? Is there another way of telling if my phone is rooted? I read somewhere that you need an unrooted phone in order to get the AT&T froyo 2.2 which hopefully will be released any day now. If I need the phone unrooted to get the update is there an easy way to unroot it that will not wipe out my programs and data?
Thanks for any help.

Ummmmm did you or didn't you run that program while in download mode? If you are unsure about that then I suggest you stop trying to mod your phone for a while and do some reading.
As far as being unrooted, no one knows. But I can tell you I plain don't care about an official release from att. I will continue to use roms that are developed by folks around here. they are better than anything that att can put out.

Pirate, I have been a member here for a long time, & been doing a lot of reading since I got this phone. I have never seen so many people get bricked and that scares me. I tried to root the phone just in order to make backups....I am a backup freek and for good reason. My last phone was the DASH 3G (still have it). I got the HTC Windows phone but only kept it a couple of weeks before realizing how far it has to go. The Captivate is definitely a lot better than anything i have ever had and it does not seem necessary to flash it in order to get all the nice apps running. I will be happy with the AT&T update if it ever appears. I have spent the past few weeks customizing the Captivate and will post my homescreen and a list of apps I am using.

Is there a way to unroot that will not erase all of my work?
How did you know its coming any day now.
first of all, 2.2 is not coming soon....
second of all, you ARE rooted
third of all, doesn't matter if you "unroot" (although you dont really seem to be a candidate for rooting anyway)...because once you're rooted or once you change the existing software (which you did with the program you listed in the first post between the "i thinks"), you negate the ability to recieve over-the-air updates from at&t
not that ANY of this matters, because the second those firmwares hit at&t phones it will be here and available to flash
not to mention we already have 2.2 available unrooted (the leaked version (might be different))
if you want me to send you the one-click ODIN file to flash stock 2.2 let me know
So it's a confirmed fact that rooted phones can't get the OTA updates?
nope only that some people have reports that they have not been able to update after they try and use atts update....

Thanks for your offer! I would love 2.2. Someone on this board said he works for AT&T said the update was coming on the 19th....guess not ))
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
4. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
thanks whitesox....I'll be keeping a eye on this thread.
Sorry Whitesox - I'm REALLY REALLY BORED at work today - hence all the forum spamming today
I need to ask a few questions about applying the update:
1. Does my home screen get reset?
Yes
2. Do I have to download all of my apps again?
Unless you had them backed up somehow (say using Titanium Backup) - then yes.
3. If so, does the phone remember which apps I downloaded from Marketplace?
Possibly - but if your using a Custom ROM? I've found that only those I have purchased show up under the Market and I had to hunt them all down again.
4. I assume that any backups i did would not apply to the new 2,2
Not necessarily true - for Apps/Data you should be fine restoring. But I wouldn't recommend restoring any type of System Data as it would conflict with the update.
5. Anything i should know as far as what is and is not included in the update?
As in? Froyo specs means you will have additional functionality - the biggest one is Flash for websites. That and you will be able to run more applications from the Market vs. your current Eclair 2.1 ROM.

Thanks for the response. I have titanium backup, as well as SUPER MANAGER which also does backups. Also have ROm MANAGER but I am sure that will not apply....As for my installed apps & widgets I have a list of everything installed. Looking forward to 2.2 and FLASH 10 WHITESOX!
The official Froyo update has been coming "any day now" since September.
Just personal preference to run Titanium Backup - I know it works and I can use the free version to do everything I want or need.
Yea - I had forecasted we would see the Froyo OTA update from ATT with Source before Christmas - It does appear we won't see this update until sometime in 2011 - like um never?
At this point your stuck with either the OTA JH7 Update 2.1 Eclair - or you can get the Leaked Froyo (not recommended stock) or your plethora of Custom ROM's in the Dev forum.
I swear I think the Captivate has more custom roms then a room full of bunnies. I look at the other Galaxy S line and I see a few - but not as many to choose from here. This is the one major plus of owning a Captivate I guess
which one to get?
OK you and whitesox seem to know what you are doing. What is the best & most stable version to get?

Just got my galaxy s today and theres loads of stupid demos that 3 decided to slap on me which I can't seem to delete, plus I'd like to update my version of android
Welcome to XDA!
New to Android? -> Install KIES and connect your phone to see if there is official upgrade for you.
Already familiar to Android, Flashing etc? -> Search for Stock ROMs (prefer 2.2.1) in General Section
Advanced user/dev? -> Go to Developers area and read carefully on how-to flash custom ROMs.
If I were you I'd wait a few days to be sure that everything is ok with your hardware then start flashing whatever. And Always read the stickies
I hope that this helps
coolio I'm new to android but not to UNIX systems. Looking at using Darky's with option of using either that or touchwiz
Preference would be the Rom Kitchin and build your own rom .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703
But read the posts and keep away from those roms with multiple problems for your first try.

First, turn phone off, touch one of the soft keys and wait for backlight to go out. Hold vol dwn, home button and power to check u have access to Download mode. If yes, then remove battery and get rooted, if not then u need to download and run the 3 button combo fix ( there is one of the methods that is very straightforward and works - doesn't require any ssh or cmd stuff ).
Second, you need the phone rooted to get access to the system. Superoneclick is the one I use for rooting - very straight forward.
Then u can use titanium backup to remove whatever system apps u want.

How do I become a root superuser?

Flash a kernel like CF-root that will enable root access for you. There are many threads/guides on this topic already, so try googling/searching the forum
Just Bought a AT&T Galaxy tab off Craigslist. I'm not sure what my first move should be. I would like to Install a custom ROM. Are there any updated and reliable Tutorials on how to do it? everything i come across seems to be a bit Sketch.
Some people use Kies And Some OCLF super one click Odin etc. If I install a custom Rom will I still be able to have ATT activate it?
I have a Galaxy S Phone that I Flashed with Di11 P1ck1e
and I also HAD a WiFi only p1010 Galaxy tab, so I'm not a total Moron =)

Yes att can activate it if it is ROMed.... and I just rooted my gtab a few days ago... i used super oneclick then i used heimdall to instal cwma and then i instaled spacemoose's honeycomb build in the custom recovery, thats what worked for me
can you elaborate and explain that a little. i was just researching the honeycomb install thread. it looks to be an advanced rom install, not for noobers.
also i assume a new rom will allow me to "enable non-market apps"
1st you need to find out if your tab is GSM (simcard) or CDMA (no simcard).
Then you need to check out the developers thread. Overcome has a guide you can download to read how to use ODIN posted on his thread.
If you have a GSM tab you have a lot more options for Gingerbread and Froyo.
CDMA has Honeycomb advanced further but GSM are catching up.
I Have an At&t GSM Tab. I also hurd there is a way to use the sim card from my phone on my Tab. It Seems like the information for this device is all over the place here on XDA Can someone just simplify it for me?
