New to Android and just got a Captivate. Can somebody help me w/ software questions?

I am new to Android and just got a Captivate. I understand its pretty glitchy with the Samsung software and am wondering about a couple of things:
1. I hear a lot about rooting. What does this actually do for me? Is this loading a new Rom? Or are those two seperate things?
2. Which is the best software Rom to load on it with the best performance and least glitches? Is getting stock 2.2 Froyo on it an option or does it have to have the TouchWiz interface?
3. Whats the easiest way to load it?
4. Can I save the stock Samsung ROM in case I need to return and replace my captivate (warranty)?
This will definitely get me started in the right direction. Thank you!

1. Rooting gives you superuser permissions. Read about it on this site.
2. Since you obviously didnt read the site I'd suggest loading Cognition. Beyond that I'd suggest any of the roms you can read about on the site.
3. If you go to cognition you can read about how to install with odin from his ponack website. Just click the link to download and Read his site.
4. If you get rooted and install clockworkmod's rom manager from the android marketplace I think you can do a nandroid backup as well as a rom backup. I am sure there is a thread in general about how to do that. Just go read it.

Will the cognition rom root my phone as well or is that a seperate thing I need to do? Should I first Root , do the Titanium Backup and then mess with the rom?
Also, once I have Cognitions rom installed, I wont be able to check for software update on the phone , correct? I will have to download future releases from his site?

What is the best way to root? Are there different roots or is rooting all the same, just different procedures. I saw this one and it sounded simple: One click Root/Unroot for Captivate
Once rooted and when Samsung releases 2.2 will I be able to download and keep my root or will I have to root again?
Oh, also how do I backup the original rom in case I need to return my captivate?

You can use ODIN one click here on xda to return to stock. First thing you need to do though is search captivate dev section on three button fix. Make sure you are able to get into download mode as this is essential before modding your phone

I read most of the guide but couldn't find certain answers there nor by search, but apologies if I missed them elsewhere.
1) I'm happy with my SGS, I always used stock ROMs and am now on 2.2.1. I'd like to get root access and leave the rest as it is, however.
Is there any way to get root access with the stock 2.2.1 ROM without switching to a completely different ROM (as said, I like the stock ROM and don't feel like changing the layout, features and all that come with a new ROM)?
I saw that superoneclick thread but apparently it didn't work for everyone and questions are usually not answered there if people run into trouble so I didn't dare that yet.
2) Still a bit confused about the 2 modes. Do I need recovery mode to work? Or will download mode do to flash (if I have to) and rescue/fix my phone if something goes wrong?
My 3 combo button never worked so I bought a JIG dongle on ebay which gets my phone into download mode at least, but I still have no recovery mode yet that's why I'm asking.

There's an app called Quick Boot which will allow you to get into recovery mode but you need to have phone rooted.
Note though that Froyo uses 3e and I've tried to use update zips, wont take without going down to 2e recovery.

Warning etc I take no resposibility if you break something etc
First of all fix your 3 button for recovery, there should be some guides around here.
1. Try that superoneclick you posted the link to. If it wont work it wont work... But it will.
2. Recovery you need only if you want to tinker with the rom a little more and to do nice stuffs like backup. Or for a recovery
Oh and I am on stock rom + custom kernel + another modem and happy with it.
First I was rooted and the rest was as it is and I rooted with the super one click root . Dont forget USB debugging on. Once you root though I think wont be long till you start customizing a little . Good start is a nice good custom kernel

If you want to stick with stock you could try these stock roms which come pre-rooted, zip-aligned and deodexed (making them smoother and allowing the application of themes).

To fix the three button combo have a read of this thread. The OP of this one is really helpful if you're not sure what to do. I had to do this and it was the most nerve racking thing i've done to my phone as if this screws up you'll be sending it for repair.

Had my first successful flash today (3 button combo mode) and will now take a more in depth look at rooting etc.
So far, I feel more comfortable to try a rooted stock kernel maybe instead of superoneclick.
However, if I had to unroot for any reason, how can I do that if I flashed the kernel?
The way I understood about ROMs and Kernels is that ROMs already contain kernels. So flashing a stock ROM would get me back to a stock kernel and the phone would be unrooted again?

you can also just flash a kernel and root such as cfroot or speedmod..

To un-root you can just flash a stock ROM (look in the general section to find them).
If you like stock ROMS then like the person above stated you can just flash a pure stock ROM then flash a new kernel (i.e. speedmod, voodoo etc.).
Good to hear the 3-button flash worked for you, now it is very difficult to brick your phone as you should always have the 3-button download mode which enables flashing with Odin.
Just be careful when picking a stock ROM, especially if its new, to check if it includes a new bootloader!!

Mate if you just want a simple to apply root access I would just use Z4root... its not used so much anymore but it works well and can be installed by just installing the app(can't be obtained from android market, internet only)..

I used z4root on 2.2 but afaik z4root no longer works with 2.2.1.
I did flash the CF Kernel now and quite happy with it so far.
By the way, is it a bad idea trying to flash with Odin if the phone is connected via a USB hub instead of connecting it to the direct usb port? Each flashing failed on the 1st attempt (worked on the 2nd), no matter what I flashed so far. Some searching here indicates a hub is not recommended.
If that's the case, why is that not mentioned in all those read-me-first guides (or maybe I missed it somewhere)? Not every first-flash user will have a JIG at hand.

You're right you should have the USB cable plugged into a USB port on the motherboard (not a port in your pc case or a hub) for the least chance of flash failure.
Not sure why though tbh, I think it may have something to do with the Samsung USB drivers that get installed with Kies being a bit flaky.

You've to root your phone and install CWM first. It's pretty easy to do. Open up the dev section and you'll find everything there.
Once done, select the ROM that you need. ICS Stunner v5 is by far the best ICS ROM for GN. Read it's forum in the dev section. If you like it, follow the steps mentioned in the forum, it's pretty simple.

There are quite a few threads for letting you know the detailed process of installing ICS on Note.
You will have to root your phone first. There is also a nice list of methods to do this.
Go to the Developer section and check the 1st post of ICS Stunner thread.
Read it carefully and also watch the youtube vidoe. All the steps are listed for a newbie..

starting like so......
!) are you rooted ? if not check here
2) are you familiar with how to get to Recovery mode and download mode ? else read carefully
* Volume Up + Home Button + Power Button Until N7000 Boot appears Leave Power Button but keep the other two Buttons Pressed you'll get to Recovery Mode with some options.
* Volume Down + Home Button + Power Button Until n7000 Boot appears leave Power Button keep the other two Buttons Pressed you'll get to Download Mode
- PS : Basicly Up Means Recovery And Down obviously means Download thats how you get to the modes. now recovery can clean applications cache and lets you factory set your device (as if you just bought it and started for first time) other than that you need to know what a kernel is (Android Base and it's a Linux kernel) you can flash any you like as long as it matches your phone's Type example (N7000 kernels match GNote) but I9100 doesn't neither do others so watch for this and mainly search in the right forum so you wont get too far, flashing isn't risky that much but keep your files saved.... especially EFS folder for IMEI (there are many ways in each ROM thread you'll probably have the method and explaine of it NOW WATCH OUT TO FLASH CUTOM ROMS YOU NEED ROOT AND FOR Samsung (ROOT == Void Warrenty) so take the risk at your shoulders we are not responssible for any mistake read and follow read 10 times and act once so you wont fail
Download means using Odin and flashing from PC, Increases counter in Download Mode so Samsung will know that you flashed something and it wont intrest them what cause you have no warrenty left, if you flash stock ROMS (not modified) the counter wont increase, most cases you do that if you have a region problem or a curiosity or even a soft brick (means your phone has no Recovery Mode and no Vibration or even a screen text just Download Mode works (u'll use odin to wake it up by flashing a stock ROM) a hard brick means no one can help you if its caused by flashing only a guy or company which repaires and uses JTAG or replaces part (MotherBoard).....
for now thats all....
now installation is simple ROOT and flash that ICS Look theme thats it after you ROOT you'll CMW mostly with SU (SuperUser) permissions so no need for odin flash via Recovery options... and you're set!

* any kernel will do you for a GingerBread ROM (Stock == Factory) but watch for ICS Repacks not just any works. may get Bootloops if wrong

About a week or more ago I downloaded 1987UCKK$ and Corn kernel v705. I flashed them both on my phone (AT&T samsung captivate) and my husbands phone (same). All went well and we love it.
My question is on our sdcard (internal) two files were placed:
ICS 4.0.0 captivate Full zip and ICS captivate update.zip
I have been looking to upgrade to ICS for the captivate and would like to know if I can use these files to do so through CWM??? If so, which one do I use or do I use them both. Any instructions on the order of use would be appreciated...

My suggestion would be that, if a file was placed on your SDcard that you're not aware of, and aren't sure where you go them from.. and ESPECIALLY if you don't have instructions when you download them, DONT USE THEM. I'm biased, so I'll point you toward my rom. Take a look here, it's ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813917

Agreed...delete those zips...just because of not knowing what they are. And just go with the ICS Rom of your choice and it's specific install instructions in it's OP.

Gosh, this looks like an awesome rom...I found the rooting thing. Titanium wasn't opening and while I was looking around the new interface I found PERMISSIONS>manage ROOT permissions...and all is working fine now....got a lot to learn but I love to do that.

I am thinking about installing a cloud rom to see if that will work

and I think it should say 1897UCKBI

Start from scratch and re install. When you restore from titanium backup restore apps only. Not system apps. System app or system data will break your phone.
Also, the i9000 is the baseband. Essentially telling you what modem the phone is from. It is cosmetic. If you have any further questions ask in my thread so I can assisy

I9000 - Newby to rooting

Hi peeps,
So I've read the FAQ, Sticky's and searched newby posts but never rooted a phone before so would be nice to bounce ideas off people before I brick the thing.
I'm rooting because I want to upgrade the OS, try the google DNS settings to see if it improves browsing speed and increase all round performance.
I always felt the hardware should be capable of more and now I want to see if it is!
I've tested download mode and seen the shiny yellow droid! :cyclops:
What I want to do is find the newest stable optimised OS for my device and practice rooting/customising before I move on to messing with my more valuable tablet.
I've read that IceCream Sandwich runs really great with low memory usage, do you guys cosign ICS as the best for I9000?
I also want to get rid of all the Samsung bloatware. Does anyone know which apps I can't remove because they might damage the device?
Found a guide to increasing RAM and processor speed by entering codes! Has anyone done this? Is it legit?

I've come across a ridiculous amount of ways to root my phone, has anyone tried the one click root app stuff?
The Odin tool looks good for flashing and they recommend using an 'Android cable'. Are there any issues with using other USB cables?
[EDIT: It doesn't look like Odin has a Mac version. Is anyone aware of a Mac alternative?]
Lots to talk about with this rooting stuff!

I had the official rom Gingerbread (works fine), custom roms Ice Cream Sandwich (so much better than the previous one), Jelly Bean (was just as good as ICS, maybe better), although this has been a while ago.
Kitkat was laggy. I haven't tried Lollipop. I did flash mine to Marsmallow, surprisingly it's seems faster than Kitkat.
Honeycomb was made for Tablet devices.

Wow Marshmallow was quick? I wouldn't mind checking out the multiscreen feature from Lollipop but more importantly I just want everything to be stable. I like the Notification feature from Jellybean so I'm tempted to start from there although it probably depends on which ROM you use, I suppose some will be better than others.
Did you delete any of the Samsung Apps?

If you flash custom rom on your phone you will lose all the Samsung Apps anyway. I think it wil be laggy if you tried the multiscreen feature, I think you mean the multitask function?

You're right, no links allowed yet. Thanks for the tips man I think I'm ready to give this a go. I might have to do this on a Mac with a Windows virtual machine, bit of a hassle but I haven't found a mac version of Odin yet. Do they have links to ROM's here?

You can use the search function on this forum. You just search for the rom and confirm it's for your device. You can also google it, some guides should lead to this forum but there are plenty of other websites with guides. I have used guides from here and from other websites, unfortunately I don't remember which sites and which roms (from which creator) I have used in the past.
I don't know if there is an Odin for Mac version, but yea you can try it in virtual machine or bootcamp.

Cheers KHazuya I'll check out those links and try that later. I've already got Ginerbread but I find it a bit laggy tbh. I hope I can get my essential apps working on Jellybean if not then I might try Marshmallow.

The essential apps should be working on it unless it's designed for a newer android version.
After many attempts I managed to get all the flashing done (because it didn't always wanted to proceed for some reason, back then when I did it, it went smoothly. This time I had to search for the guides and files). My phone which I rooted and flashed long time ago, had some issues with randomly reboots when it was on standby so I went back to stock and it didn't happen anymore.
So from Rooted and Custom rom back to > Stock rom (Froyo) > Official update to Gingerbread > Root + CWM Recovery > ICS > Kitkat > Marshmallow
For some reason my router doesn't show up in the list, I see other routers though but I can connect my phone to my router by pressing the WPS Button (it happens on ICS, Kitkat and Marshmallow on my phone). After my router was turned off and on, my phone could detect the router. So it's all good now.
Well this phone will be my Music Player so it will have its uses and I don't need to buy an iPod or something
