[Q] Backing up Fido's Android 2.1 - a clean copy of the OS itself, excluding all personal.
Hello folks,
I would like to upgrade mobile from Android 2.1 (Eclair) and tryout Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS on my Acer Liquid E. I've come across reading that few people are having some issues after they performed their upgrades, and perhaps the update has been removed from Acer's download section, but I managed to download a copy before they did. I'd like to make sure I can revert back to 2.1 should I choose to do so.
-Please, could someone let me know how would I be able to do that safely, or if it's available for download?
Thanks!

Haya all,
First, I am not a pro at this stuff, tho I am a full time developer, and comfortable with most things IT.
About 3 months ago I purchased a Nexus One, and since I live in Thailand, and the root OS could not handle the Thai font, I followed instructions on this site to root and upgrade to the RA-Nexus-1.7.0 package.
Now, however, I would really like to have 2.2 for the new apps and (most importantly for me) the Flash update.
Is there a way to flash this thing without erasing my current apps, configurations etc?
Let me also say that while my phone was notified of the updates (both 2.1 and 2.2), both failed to install with "Verification Failed". Manual install of Froyo also failed with the same message (via copy to flash and reboot to recovery).
I assume that I need to use the SDK to push a update to the phone, but do not want to make a mistake... and the directions I have found here assume that you either have a fresh phone or can update via flash/recovery.
Can someone please shoot me in the right direction? (I will need a download link too =D)
Thanks,
Frosty
Ok, let me add...
Like I said I am not a pro at this stuff. In the About Phone section, it does say that I have 2.1, and just in case its relevant, baseband version: 32.19.00.16U_4.02.02.14 and kernel version: 2.6.29-gad36b87 [email protected] #1
Rebooting to recovery mentions the RA-Nexus-1.7.0 still, so I assume thats the current "recovery".
Thanks
Frosty
What's your build number? That should be shown in the same screen as your baseband and such.
Edit: Also, are you wanting to use the stock Froyo ROM (with or without root) or did you want a custom Froyo ROM?
Currently I have a droid, with BB v1.1 on it along with DropTheme installed on it. What I want to do is, update my phone to 2.2 since it is currently 2.1, download and install the Sapphire rom for it, and put DropTheme back on it
How do I go about doing this? how do I update to 2.2? Do I just install 2.2, go to rom manager and install sapphire, then reinstall drop theme?
Help please. This stuff confuses the hell out of me.
Also, how do I back up my call log and contacts? Really don't wanna lose those in the move over. So far I backed up with rom manager and titanium backup but that is it.
Thanks!
I have a stock Captivate, and am new to Android OS. My understanding is that the Captivate has Android 2.1 with Samsung's Touch Whiz "blended" into it. I'm also aware that there are many custom roms that have various versions of Android with various tweeks and what-not, and to implement any custom rom, you first have to root (unlock) you phone, which voids the warranty.
My question is: Is it possible to install a basic Android (vanilla) version (2.3?) onto my Captivate without rooting my phone, or if it has to be rooted, is it as simple as just rooting the phone, and then downloading/installing the Android 2.3 source code? Or, are the custom roms necessary because they contain drivers for the various hardware components in the Captivate? School a noob please.

2.3 is Gingerbread not vanilla (if and when google ever makes a vanilla, it will be a long time from now). Anyays, you HAVE to root the phone then install rom manager from the market and install the rom zip through either rom manager or clockwork recovery (installed when on rom manager's first use).

I get that vanilla means just stock android, whether it be 2.1, 2.3, etc. I was a little ambiguous with my question, apologies.

I'm assuming I would just follow the sticky directions for rooting?
When I root my phone, I understand that it voids my warranty, but would it prevent me from installing the mythical official AT&T 2.2 update?

So, I can use this to install stock/vanilla android 2.2 or 2.3, and it will work with the Captivate, or will some hardware not function properly?...This goes back to my original question about whether or not stock/vanilla android 2.2 or 2.3 will run on my phone without error, or if a custom rom is required to get the android OS to work with the captivate's specific hardware.

If samsung/att finds out your rooted it will void the warranty, but you can go back to stock and they won't know. You will likely have to be on stock for att ota updates to work.

First of all, make sure you can get into download mode using a button combo (see the sticky), otherwise you might need a jig if things go bad. Download mode is what is used to go back to stock prior to flashing a rom.
stock has locked down features of your phone such as: usb tethering, mobile ap, 2g/3g toggle, and more; plus stock is painfully laggy (slow)
a good rom like the one I use (see sig) has all these features working and is very fast.
Edit: I misunderstood you. No you will not be able to use your phone with android that is not specific to a captivate or i9000.
Thanks man, you deff cleared up a bunch of stuff for me. I'll prob just wait for the official release then, as I'm pretty darn happy with 2.1 (coming from a tilt2 with stock 6.5pro).
I'm starting to get the feeling that there is a better chance of having a cargo jet, full of gypsy tears and unicorn blood, fall out of the sky on my car while I'm on my way home from work today, than seeing the official froyo by this spring...
Yea.. still ongoing issues with what Samsung is releasing and AT&T keeps waiting. So we keep waiting.
And a true "Google Vanilla" ROM for these phones are almost impossible. Gingerbread will be the closest thing we are going to get to having it.
Between the Touchwiz interface, the proprietary RFS file system, and the fact that Samsung has integrated so much other bloat type crap in their OS - then fails to release the Source code so the folks on XDA can fix the mess.
My girlfriend has the G1 with stock 1.6 and I believe the makers of Words With Friends (Zynga) removed the app from 1.6 compatibility - it now requires 2.1 and above. She therefore can no longer download it from the Market.
This is a free app so there is no copyright or piracy issue here. I did find an APK via Google, but it has strange bugs (not the usual bugs with this app) such as she ends up in a game where it is me vs. me, but not her. Have tried all manner of uninstalls, reinstalls, and new WWF accounts. Must be because it is not designed for 1.6 any more.
Does anyone have access to the last well-behaved APK for Android 1.6? It used to work perfectly fine for her.
Hmm, why not just upgrade her G1 to the current version of ROM? Then she won't have that problem. Just curious.
Thanks. Unless I'm mistaken, 1.6 was the last official release for the G1 from Google, no?
I did upgrade another G1 to the Cyanogen version of Froyo, but it always ran slow, got worse, and the user ended up getting rid of it due to this, so I am cautious.
In short, is there a simple ROM that will bring her up to 2.1 on the G1, without slowing the phone down any more than it currently does?
Preferably a ROM I can just download and install via the update.zip method, without all the rooting and hacking. Thanks!
Yes, 1.6 is the official release by google. If you are expecting them to release the next one that will include 2.x, you might not even see it.
Even with 1.6 it's still slow (IMO). And you can't load any other apps on because most of the apps now a day required 2.x and above to work.
Since you asked, I recommend SuperAosp, and it's currently has 2.3 on it. I have been using it since March and loving it. Default load already is fast. With radio 2708/SPL 13d and the 15MB-boot from the DEV. You can also tweak it more for better performance, etc...
As far as not rooting, to my knowledge that's probably impossible. You will required to root in order to load any ROM.
Thanks! Is there any simple step-by-step guide to install it, using a Mac? I can mount the SD card on the Mac so simple file operations are fine.
I'm not sure where to get the appropriate Radio zip for example.
Thanks!
I actually took the plunge and installed the recommended SuperAosp from stock 1.6, and Words with Friends wont let me log in. I tried WWF 3.34 and 3.20 and both of them let you put email in and then it asks for new user name. You put it in and it goes back to the email. I've tried multiple emails and user names & it just goes right back. So if anyone is using a rom that works with WWF would love to know.
I ended up installing ezterry's Froyo and it works great! Make sure you wipe all data and caches first.

Oops sorry, I don't know how I missed this. It should work. I am using it. It's because your user name is taken. I ran into that problem before. I am currently using it with SuperAosp 6.4.2.
My problem is now in some of the game. the letter that was played will not show up from my opponent. It will not display correctly.
Hi there,
I have a Samsung Captivate with:
Firmware version 2.1-update1
Baseband version I896UXJI2
Kernel version 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build Number ECLAIR.UXJI2
This phone has been successfully rooted and unlocked using the method described on XDA developers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=831569
Then, it has been lag-fixed(now works much faster)
I love the phone the way it is, unfortunately some applications crash. Most important of all, skype refuses to work on my Samsung Captivate - loads up, once I put in the user/pass - gives me a message that Skype has crashed and restarts skype. Some other apps crash on startup also, like Maverick for example.
According to the info on the net, I need 2.3 Android to run Skype.
I've read guides/stickies on this forum and others, but I am still unclear on the following:
1)Will I have to root/unlock the phone over again after updating Android
2)What is the difference between Froyo, Eclair and Gingerbread?
3)My GPS takes forever to lock onto satellites, even in open field. Does the update fix this problem?
4)I understand there are a bunch of custom ROMs. Some promise improved performance, etc.. If I want one of these, do I update to these kernels right away from my current 2.1 ROM or do I need to do an update?
Thank you so much in advance!
1. If you go to a custom rom, no, you shouldn't have to. Most roms will root you by default.
2. Eclair = Android 2.1. Froyo=Android 2.2. Gingerbread =2.3. Beyond that, it's mostly incremental improvements and features (You may have to do some of your own digging to find out what those are).
3. Maybe. Different rom/kernel/modem combinations affect GPS performance differently, and there are even GPS-specific tweaks that can be used. It will be a matter of trial and discovery to find out how it works for you.
4. If you're still on 2.1 and thinking of going to 2.3, I personally wouldn't do any other updates at this point. Go find a rom you want to flash to, and VERY carefully read its flashing instructions. 2.1 is a good starting point to jump to 2.3.
Post any more questions if you have them.
