Tilt won't stay powered off

First off, I just want to say thanks for anyone who might be able to be of some assistance. I've tried searching google and the forums but haven't had any luck. If I've missed something, please feel free to hit me upside the head with the spoon.

Here's a quick rundown of my history...
- Can use Active Sync just fine
- When trying to charge, it says charging but won't charge
- No visible damage to the mini usb plug (at least to me)
- Had accident where the usb cable was pulled out from Tilt

I recently bought a charger that will just charge the battery separately from the phone until I can get it repaired. It's working fine so far except one issue. Whenever I try to power off the device (hold the power button till prompted to turn off), it'll power off then it'll power itself back on after 3 seconds. I did a hard reset to see if that would fix anything but it didn't. The only way to keep the phone off is to take out the battery. But once I put the battery back in, it'll power on by itself. The power button doesn't seem to be sticking or anything but I guess anything is possible. If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it very much!!!
(I'm currently running the stock AT&T Rom without any programs installed. Also, I've never had any other Rom flashed on it.)

There is an option somewhere in power settings that enables/disables the Tilt from charging when connected to a PC. This may be the cause of the first issue.
However, the fact that it won't stay powered off...I have never heard of that before it sounds like a hardware issue. If your Tilt is still covered under warranty I would get it replaced.

Thanks for the reply! I tried adjusting that setting along with any other settings I could find regarding power but all without any luck.
I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue as well, but I guess what I'm really wondering is if any one can make a semi-educated guess as to whether this could be involved with my mini usb plug issue or if the motherboard is just screwed
I'd love to send it in for a replacement but of course my warranty expired 5 days before the problems started

I'm not a hardware guru with HTC, although I have alot of experience troubleshooting PCs and Servers. I would say that it is unlikely that the USB port is what is causing the device to keep turning on.
In any event, are you qualified or ready to try an replace either one yourself (usb port or motherboard)?
There are 3rd party services that will fix the device...but they aren't cheap...it can cost $1-200 bucks or maybe more.
Are you running the Stock ROM/Radio/SPL? Or did you flash anything new?
You may want to revert everything back to defaults and see if the problem persists.

I'm handy with computer hardware and everything but not really with small electronics. I was willing to send it to a repair shop to have the usb plug replaced in hopes of fixing my charging problems but now I'm not sure if it'll be worth it if there's a bigger/more expensive problem.

Hmm..yeah...refurb doesn't sit well with me.
At least the problem isn't a crippling one...since you can charge it with a stand-alone charger. As far as not staying off....that's kind of annoying, but I don't generally turn my Tilt completely off. You can always just put all the power saving stuff on to cut down on battery.
So, it seems like something you may have to live with, or pay for repairs. Hopefully someone can offer a better miracle cure than those suggestions...

I was a little weary of buying a refurb at first, but it was actually in great condition and worked just fine until when I accidentally kicked the cable out of it. But thanks for the suggestions. And you're right, it's still very usable, just a bit more of a hassle right now. Hopefully someone out there has something for me.

Exact same problem as dieneverknowing. I am going to try some new batteries and see what happens.

im having the same issue on my old tilt. i took it apart. and still no luck . no visible damage, gonna clean everything and put it back together.

Hey don't worry about bumping an old thread. I meant to do the same when I got my phone fixed.
Turns out it was the sync connector that had damage. I sent it to PPC Techs for this service and it made it like new. I never tried to take it apart, but I could only assume that at some point in time, one of the pins in the connector became separated from the motherboard.

thats what it looks like to me. i have it narrowed down to the board with the usb connector. but not sure yet. How much was that service. i would replace it my self if i can find that part at frys today.

Service was $80, and then you had to pay shipping both ways. I had looked into replacing it myself, but my small electronic skills aren't good enough for me to risk it on a pricy phone. I remember seeing the connector part somewhere online for $40 I believe, but I can't remember where though.
But PPC Techs had it repaired in less then 24 hrs after receiving it. And they did a great job. It feels more solid then when I had originally bought the phone.

Trackball boot

PLZ help im freaking out. i accidentally booted into the blue light mode, but when i pulled the battery and rebooted the backlight wouldnt work. i could see everything and even navigate my phone but only under a light. the backlight just wont turn on during boot and changing the setting doesnt help.
i dont get it the thing was working 10 minutes ago and now i cant use it what should i do? i love this phone but i cant afford a new one. is there a way to tell it to turn on during boot in the console?

ok new update the backlight works if i have the keyboard open. i know 100% its software and not the screen. something when wrong with the boot prosses or something.
i think the trackball boot (bluelight boot) must have options but wont display on the screen maybe. like a bios menu. this is very infuriating

Why don't you restore a recent backup?

i have even went as far as downgrading with the .nbh file. and re installing the bootloader (Just the original, didnt want a brick).

Bluelight mode (where you end up by booting with the trackball pushed in), is just a serial console allowing interfacing with the radio firmware. Unless you actually had a serial cable connected and punched in some commands (which happen to be security locked, therefore wouldn't work for you anyways), bluelight mode wouldn't be able to do this.

if that were the case than wouldnt it flicker if i flex the screen/hinge ? ill try anything at this point cuz im outa warranty and have no money . im going to the store later trying to update to official 1.6 so i can convince them its software related and they may replace it for me.

oh forgot to mention that if i close it and open it the light stays off untill i hit end and unlock with menu again. im not to sure if that helps.

OK OK OK you are right. i just half closed it and the light stayed on untill it compleatly closed (so the screen flipped, i thought that is what triggered it) and then i got it to stay on completely closed and then the problem flipped to it wouldnt come on while open and now back to the way it was. so im going to go buy a T5 screw driver today and clean the contacts of the ribon cable and reinsert it (i have had experience with that just need to know what ribon. a pic would be nice)

lol ok didn't know that a lot of the devices I have taken apart have had 2 one for the desplay and one for the backlight. Getting a T5 screw driver in half an hour. Will post results later. Hopefully this works, therr area few more ppl with the same problem.

There are two wires going to the screen.. sounds like the "top" one is loose... The jtag photos will give you an idea (it's the two com ports next to the jtag test points)
These are usually taped down very well..
Also you need both a T5 and T6.. the "Security" (has black void sticker) screw is larger than the others.. and a small flat head screwdriver to unclip the cover..
If all else fails: replacement screens seem much cheaper than the phone on ebay.

ok got it apart 3 times and no luck its prolly the ribbon cable. im going to test that soon. i have a donor phone comming soon from a friend who dropped it in water, the ribbon cable should be fine to use. if that doesnt work im thinking maybe it is software. either way if i cant get it fixed by next month im spending $410 on a new mytouch 3G brand new from the store and getting insurance XP

Auto power-on driving me nuts

Whenever I leave the house, I unplug my Note to take it along but every time, before I stick it in my shirt pocket I have to turn it off first. That's because it on by itself just because I removed the charging cable. At first I thought this would just be a minor annoyance, but by the time I've needlessly turned off the thing a few hundred times the damn thing really starts to annoy me. And it's even worse when I try to charge it in my car because every time I turn the key one way or another I have to turn the phone off yet again. It's a bit more difficult because I have one of those silicon rubber protector things so it takes a little longer to find the off button. But I like the protection that this cover provides. I suppose I could just wait for the timeout (which I like at 5 minutes), but that would waste some battery power that I may need later. Plus it just annoys me if it is on when I'm not using it. (Actually it is the same problem when I plug it in to the charger as well!). So who decided on this ridiculous behavior? If it is an Android thing - shame on Google. If it is a Samsung thing - shame on them. (If so I might even switch phones ... although I haven't heard of another phone that can compete with the Note). Or is it just a quirk of my ROM? (I only used GB for an hour or so, and didn't have time to observe this behavior or not - then I flashed PA which I have been using ever since.) I love this ROM although I would switch in an instant if I could get rid of my only real annoyance with this phone.

First the silicon protector that you put in your phone because it cover also the power when put it in your pocket it keeps triggering it, its like a hair trigger.
Of course when you plug the charger it will trigger the screen to on.
Why dont you just adjust the screen time out to one minute.

I dont have this problem but anyway, a quick fix would be to use Tasker which lets you easily automate everything in your phone

That would result in about as many needless and annoying presses of the power button as it turned off when I didn't want it to.

That would be great if Tasker could turn it off again for me when it was turned on automatically. I took a quick look at the hardware events that tasker can act on such as:
Display: Off/On/Unlocked
File: File Closed/Deleted/Modified/Moved/Opened/Attributes Changed
Hardware: Camera Button, Search Button Long-Press, Card Mounted/Removed/Unmounted
Misc: Gesture, Shake
Phone: Missed Call, Phone Idle/Offhook/Ringing, Received Text, SMS Send Success/Failure
Power: Battery Changed/Full/Low/Overheating
System: Device Boot, Device Shutdown, Device Storage Low, Locale Changed, New/Removed/Updated Package, Wallpaper Changed
However being plugged in or out is not in this list. So how can it be done?

I'd like to know too.
I can understand "screen on when charging cable plugged in". But its annoying as hell to have the screen on when charging cable is removed. Since 95% of the time it's going right into my pocket.

let's understand this better:
Your phone is off and turns on upon disconnected from the charger, or it is already on, but you don't want the screen to lighten up when you disconnect?
If it's the first case, that's weird...mine never auto initiates...If the second case, really don't know what you could do.
If it's the first scenario, maybe a factory reset? But beware of the brick bug and flash a safe kernel first.

Hey there Paul,
Man, that is one hell of an issue you have.
Anyway, I don't have much to advice you as I'm not using PA rom on my Note(for the moment ), but hey.. you said it for yourself that you were not able to test it thoroughly your Note before in GB right? only about an hour before flashing to PA?..hmm... logical advice I guess on my end would be to try to flash it back to GB again and observe it for 1 complete day to see if the same issue still occurs.
By the way.. you have a very sensitive Note there bud.
Again, going back to GB is the only way(if you we're to ask me), to confirm if the 'sensitivity' is still there or not anymore.
P.S. I might suggest to you to take out that screen rubber protector in the meantime also. Just use it 'naked' for a day on stock GB.
See how it goes after.

It's the 1st case. My phone is off and charging. I remove the charging cord and the screen just turns on despite the fact that I have not hit the power button - or any button for that matter.
I think it is more weird that you don't have this problem than the fact that I do. I've googled this and found many people complaining about it, but no explanations anywhere why it works this crazy way or how to fix it. And "Noodled24" who responded to my post above is yet one more person who is annoyed by this problem. I suspect there are thousands more (maybe even millions?), most of whom don't vocalize their annoyance.
BTW I'm being pretty glib with my use of the word "off". I'm really just referring to "screen off" - i.e. what happens when you briefly press the power button. I'm aware that this is not really off in the more conventional sense. If I power down using the power button long press, then no ... I don't have any problem with it turning on all by itself. So if this is part of the confusion, sorry about that. In fact, like most phone users, I almost never do a reboot (true power off) unless something goes wrong with the phone.
And recently I've found some people complaining about this problem regarding other Android devices, so I no longer think that this is a problem just with the Note, or just with the particular rom that I am using. Although I still don't know how wide spread the problem is.

I don't think my Note is "sensitive". I've very carefully removed the power cord many times (even without the rubber cover) to be sure that I am not touching the screen or any button whatsoever. And BTW the problem does not happen 90% or 99% or even 99.9% of the time. No - as far as I can tell the problem occurs 100% of the time!. So I wouldn't call my device "sensitive". I would just say that it has been improperly programmed to work in this bizarre fashion. Usually such programming mistakes can be fixed, which of course is why I have posted to this forum.
I don't think going back to GB will solve the problem. I think the same problem happened, although I can't be sure since as I mentioned before I didn't use GB for long before flashing to ICS (PA). However even if it did solve the problem, IMO going that far backwards wouldn't be a very attractive solution.

So you don't have to go back to GB......screen turns on when unplugging my stock rooted GB. I think that is the normal behavior.
I agree, unplugging shouldn't turn on the screen, but Google does lots of things that don't make sense in real life usage.

Disable power off on lockscreen in ARHD?

One important security-related difference I have noticed after installing this ROM over the stock ROM I had:
On my stock ROM, holding down the power/sleep button on the lock screen used to do NOTHING. I had to unlock my phone (with the pattern lock) before I could power off the phone.
On this ROM, I can power off the phone even when it is locked.
If a thief steals my phone, I want to be able to track them as long as possible. As the HTC One does not have an easily removable battery, they would not be able to power off the phone or its data connection with my lockscreen password. On this ROM, that security feature is gone.
I'm hoping this is just an obscure setting somewhere, but I already tried checking in Settings -> Security and Settings -> Power. Can anyone give me some insight into this?

There is a Xposed module that can be used instead of the one in this ROM that has exactly what you are concerned.

if your phone is stolen, this is your friend. google.com/android/devicemanager just log in with your e-mail and you're good to go

I have found avast make such an app that your after I can't get URL at the moment but search through the play store for avast rooted and stolen, I will see if I can get you a link

I already have a paid subscription to Avast Anti-Theft and it is installed on my rooted HTC. I appreciate the suggestion but you are entirely missing my point. It is BECAUSE I have installed tracking software on my phone that I am so concerned about someone being able to turn off the phone at the lockscreen. Avast is slightly more useful than the google device manager because it can keep a historical record of where your phone has been, but it is still not very useful in finding a stolen phone if the phone is OFF and not transmitting current data about where the phone is!!

Promising, except we are on 4.4 now. And the thread also indicates there were problems getting it working with Sony devices after 4.3 which had to be fixed in a separate mod. I also see this note:
A user has reported that sound options disappear when using this mod on HTC One. I currently have no idea why this happens, and I'm too busy to figure it out at this moment. Sorry.

yeah, but IF you have lost or had your phone stolen i was pretty sure if they take out your sim and put in a new one the phone will go into stolen mode and features will be disabled

I'm not worried about that. In my opinion, the first few hours after a theft are the most crucial (in fact, the first hour while he is escaping to his den). What I'm worried about is the thief IMMEDIATELY turning off the phone after it gets stolen, and then having the phone wiped at his leisure.

What if the thief just turns airplane mode on? Does avast override it?

Holding down the power button for 10 seconds will always simulate a battery pull on the one whatever lock screen you have.

But yea, I think it's important to have long-press power button disabled when the phone is locked.

Ah k. Yeah, I'm still using 4.3 so I don't know about if it works on KitKat.

I am not aware of anything that can be helpful if your phone is off... Every app or software will require a satellite or cell tower ak or echo request in order to find your phone. if you can find anything that magically can turn your powered off device on and you're able to track, lock or delete it, I think the entire community will love you

I don't know how you guys keep misinterpreting me I know nothing is useful when the phone is turned off. This is exactly why I am so eager to make sure it is impossible or at least more difficult for a thief to turn off my phone from the lockscreen, so that it STAYS ON so that I can track it.

Ah I see, it's my understanding that holding the power button for about 15-30 seconds will power off your device no matter what. As sad as that is, I think it should be that way because if for any reason your phone locks up while asleep and you cannot wake it up, you should be able to turn it off. otherwise, if it gets stolen and the thief cannot turn it off, simply removing the SIM card will render any security feature useless until the phone battery is fully discharged and he can charge, enter recovery and wipe it...

Avast does have an option (only when rooted I believe) to automatically activate WiFi and Cellular data even if turned off.
Of course, if you have a lockscreen this does not even matter as they would not be able to turn it off.
There is another option to have the device automatically search for open WiFi's and join automatically. I'm not sure if this is part of Avast or AndroidLost as I have both installed.

If this 10-second press is a hardware-limitation (as in there is no way for a ROM to override this), then so be it. But I would like that to be confirmed.
But what I am mainly asking for, at the very least, is that the 3 or 4 second power button hold be disabled when on the lockscreen. I know for sure that this has changed from whichever stock version I was running to this latest Revolution ROM I am running now.
10-seconds is a long time to hold the power button, and as a thief may not know about this feature (and it might be different for every brand or model), they might give up before they hit the 10-second mark. For example, I think the Sleep + Home button hard reset for the iPhone is much more widely known, but it also requires only like 5 or 6 seconds of holding.

The 10-second press is a hardware thing. All HTC One's have it, regardless of what model. This is because of the non-removable battery, so that you can simulate a battery pull should need be, as mentioned already. I'm sorry, there is no way around this. And trust me, you would rather have that feature should your phone become unresponsive. THAT is more likely to happen than a thief stealing a phone. The only times I've ever heard of someone stealing a phone is when someone is careless with where they leave their device. Just be cautious and don't leave it in stupid places. Simple.

Terribly put. I accept the 10-second press. Let me return to my original concern which is the much shorter 3 - 5 second which now allows the phone to be turned off from the lockscreen with an on-screen menu. I would like that gone.
The second part of the post is uninformed at best or arrogant at worst. The OP is probably speaking from the point of view of a first-world resident.
I live in a third-world country. I have had a iPhone 5 that was stolen from me by two men wearing helmets who drove an untagged motorcycle onto a sidewalk just to snatch the phone out of my hand. On a public bus, I was sandwiched by 3 men just so that one could pickpocket my HTC Desire (a 3-year old backup phone) from behind. When I confronted them, I was punched and left bloody so I let them go (valuing my life over a phone).
I have another friend who has lost two iPhone 5's. Once, she was pickpocketed in a crowded mall. Another time, she was walking on the street near a public metro station with her phone clutched to her chest. A man grabbed her arm as she was passing and threw her to the ground. Afterwards he ran across a busy divided highway into a slum area.
I just met a foreigner here who was riding in the back seat of a taxi while using his Galaxy S4. The taxi suddenly stopped and two men armed with guns and knives jumped into the taxi from both sides. The taxi then continued moving. His quick reactions allowed him to escape by jumping out a window while the taxi was moving. He showed me his scrapes and bruises. Unfortunately, he had to leave the phone behind, but he may have avoided being kidnapped.
I have another friend who has a brother whose entire bus was robbed of their phones at gunpoint.
I could go on. All of these instances have occurred in both poor and very nice areas, and the nature of this country is that utter poverty and extravagant wealth are often located side by side. It might sound like a hellhole, but most days are perfectly normal, and some are wonderful, even in a third-world country. You learn to live with the badness, but it still makes sense to take proactive measures just in case.
There are other measures I can take as well: I usually use a much cheaper "decoy" phone in public. I try to ride the metro more than taxis and taxis more than buses. I try to always keep my valuables in a bag in front of me instead of in my pockets. When riding a taxi, I try to always make a note of the taxi number and lock all the doors from the inside. But you can't seriously blow me off and tell me to be 100% vigilant all the time. Sometimes I forget one of these precautions because I am in a rush or my mind is preoccupied with other things. And the nature of the modern world dictates that I use my phone constantly throughout the day, for both professional and social reasons, just as I am sure you do.
The fact is the probability that my phone will get stolen here is much higher than in other places, even if I am not careless with where I leave the phone, because people are seeking to actively rob others, and it is extremely unrealistic to expect that I keep my guard up 100% of the time.
Additionally, my work involves frequent travel, and requires me to do lots of work and communication on the internet. Therefore, a fast, powerful smartphone is a necessity for me to put bread in my mouth.
Now, you may understand why my perspective is that the security features on my costly and essential phone are so important. Your perspective is probably from some rich, relatively safe country in Europe, the USA, or Asia. I hope I have educated you on the fact that the world does not revolve around your socioeconomic situation.
I will be honest and say that your post irritated me, but I have tried to keep my post civil and explain why your response is pretentious and insulated idealism. If you still want to lecture me from your world about how I can magically solve the problems of my very different and more dangerous world by simply being "cautious", I will have just two very small words to gift you.

Good God, can we please stay on topic of this fantastic Rom and what's coming soon?!

Got the LCA43 update now watch dead

I was pleased to get the update, it asked that I get the charge up to 40% plus which I did and left it plugged in and proceeded. Took quite a while and then went to battery charge instead of reboot as has happened in the past.,, I did hit the power switch and it turned off, now nothing no charge indicator and no matter how long I hold the power switch nothing.. And other tips to wake this puppy up? I originally got it at Google IO.. Wonder if Google will help?

I doubt that Google will be able to help you. Also, since its being about a year now, your watch probably doesn't have a warranty from Samsung anymore. Might still worth a try though.
See if your watch is detected by pc. I remember my watch had a glitch once. It wasn't booting up and was showing up as a device in device manager. I forgot the exact name, but it was not something you usually see when you connect in fastboot or adb mode. If it does then there might still be hope.
Try to boot your watch into fastboot mode. You need to press the power button and slide with your finger on the screen from left top corner to right bottom corner. Just slide it multiple times while holding the button. If it boots then you can either do factory reset or full reflash.

If they do end up "repairing" it, you will get a brand new watch. Samsung doesn't bother re-flashing or repairing old watches, they just send you a new one. Don't include your wristband though. You'll get your old one back... unless they lose it.

Must be different in your country. Here is the instructions they sent me when I was sending my watch for repairs.
Shipping Guide Line
(1) Verify above information is correct
i.e: Name, Shipping Address, Model number and Serial number etc
(2) DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ACCESSORIES. (Cables, Remote control, manuals, Battery, Drivers, toner cartridge, imaging unit, transfer belt, waste toner bin etc), unless otherwise instructed.
(3)
a) Package Properly, this is the responsibility of sender
b) Include copy of this authorization in the package.
(4) Arrange shipping with UPS courier (United Parcel Service)
a) Attach UPS waybill on outside of the package.

I guess it falls under "unless otherwise instructed" He was quite specific.. !!I did get the same printed instructions though...

As predicted Samsung sent an invoice for $188 to "repair" obviously not worth it with the new stuff coming out and particularly insulting since the OTC SW update caused it... Does not make me happy with Samsung to say the least...

I purchased mine from Amazon and in 6 months it was dead. Samsung would not warranty it in the USA because they told me that they didnt know where amazon bought it from and therefore wanted me to find out what country it came from and then they woudl give me that country customer service #. COMPLETE BULLcrap. amazon ended up giving me a refund.
