[Q] Galaxy S or Desire Z India - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I have been browsing this site for a few months. All this talk about flashing ROM, overclocking and changing kernel made me interested in buying an android smartphone. I was originally thinking about getting a LG optimus one. But since I don't usually change phones frequently. I wanted a smartphone which is reasonably future-proof, so I chose Samsung Galaxy S. Now there is some talk about Desire HD and Desire Z coming to India in a few weeks. This made me totally confused, I like the SGS for its screen and size, the DHD is too big and pricier, everything about the DZ sounds good except for the LCD screen and 1200mah battery. Guys please help me choose between the DZ and SGS!

This thread is 5 posts below yours. Maybe you should do a bit of reading first?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806760

Maybe I should have been clear. I did read that thread, but it was centered around Desire HD and Galaxy S, even though the title included Desire and Desire Z. I am not interested in a DHD, it is costlier and quite big. I need opinions on the Desire Z and SGS.

If you love to fight with your device (hacking and other stuff) for LONG TIME (you should not give up in between), go for SGS and want stability go for DZ.( personally stable android phones irritates me, so I bought SGS ).

HELP HELP

Please help me! My HD2 was broken, so my assurance gave a
a voucher to get a new mobile phone. I've been to a lot of
shops here in Amsterdam, and I'm waiting now for about a month
for the Desire HD. So I've been to the store today and I was so
fed up with all that **** that I bought a Samsung Galaxy S.
Question: was that a bad thing to do when I had / have the chance
to choose a Desire HD?!
Answer: .....
I really would like to know from YOU guys what the experience
is with this Samsung.
Please please....
I guess you did get a better phone.
Sure the sgs is not perfect out of the box. But if you tweak it some you get the best phone on the market..
But in the end its how you like it.

Yeah well, I've seen many tests on many sites, and after bricked (suddenly) my HD2 I was really hoping to get that Desire HD very fast, but now after unboxing that Samsung Galaxy I'm really surprised. Today I will try to root it and put a new rom on it. Any suggestions?
Hey, obviously Iam biased! My mate has a desire HD and it's a nice phone, not that keen on the sense ui, but then again i really don't like the TW ui on the sgs. I think the phones are pretty much on par, the desire feels better built, but a little more clumsy to hold, there's pro's and con's for both, but if anyone with a desire hd tells you their phone is better, stick the brightness up on full on your sgs and watch their jaws drop, amoled wins without question, don't believe the haters!
There's loads of roms out for the galaxy, my personal favourite is Spike's OC rom, no matter what other rom I flash I always seem to go back to this one, it's nice and stable and the phone is ultra responsive.
Great thanks! I will check it now. This is a nice phone indeed and
I'm looking for the new Samsung phony , if this is great, what is
that new one going to be .
I hear battery life is a big concern on Dhd to. Not that its amazing on a sgs but I hear it's better.

Galaxy's batt is definitely a little better, just wish the phone had an led notification and a camera flash

Hey there fellow Canadians
I will NEVER buy another SE phone again after the whole X10 issue... (rogers customer)
I would suggest out of all of them go for the incredible S. Since all the phones your looking at are from different carriers I would also suggest look at the Desire HD.
The desire HD is my current phone. It is the same as the Incredible S, except a Metal Unibody design.
What I would say however..... Wait a few months if you can.
New Android powered devices will be out.
Expect Telus to get em first.
Edit: Stay away from the LG imo. The 2x is pretty laggy from the model I play'd around with. Go watch some reviews of it... pretty badly optimized rom. Rather wait for HTCs new models.
Cause incredible s is coming to bell April 4th and nexus s around 14 April and arc is coming 21st both with Rogers. How you like your dhd?

I've narrowed my choices down to the same 3 phones (rogers customer)
I'm leaning towards the NS. With the incredible second and almost out of the picture.
Waiting to handle all three in person before making my final decision

I believe the Nexus S is the way to go on this one. The incredible S from what I hear isn't shipping with 2.3 which is really not as important as the hardware specs but even in that area I might go with the NS. The only thing I really like about the IS is the 8meg cam but overall I'd go with the NS.
Xperia arc sounds promising even my first choice is nexus I think. And incredible s is running 2.2 don't think it would have much dev support on xda.

Hi, I might be out of the line here, but i sold my nexus s to get incredible s, the reason is good build quality & solid user experience, i first used HTC sense when i used hero, that was also very tightly controlled by HTC, but they have done very good job with it, i am holding on to my incredible s & i feel relieved that i got rid of my nexus s, believe me i had gone for nexus s for updates, but that phone is so badly made( according to my standards> u may find it Ok) ( dont make any decision on my comment see for yourself and decide)
but i am happy now

yes you are right absolutely no support, nobody could even root the phone not even Paul (Modaco.com) AFAIK, but that is added part for me, i am not going to reflash & reflash, i want stable experience.
The Xperia Arc has a pathetic internal memory of only 300+ MB. Note that still a majority of apps doesn't support installation on SD cards. It also lacks a notification LED light and Front-facing cam, not that it's important, but this phone should be future proof.
Plus, I love the overall experience and tweaks of the Sense UI.
As we all can see ... I choose the IS
Why? First of all htc's quality is far better than samsung's ... Hardware wise ... Also sense ... Well sense is just unbeatable ... And for those who care about shipping with 2.2 ... Who cares ... we are getting an update to 2.3.3 in q2 that is this month right ?
So over all the IS is the best choice sense and 2.3.3 are goind to be a crazy combo ...

Q2 is anytime between April till June, so we could be waiting till pretty much the start of the summer for Gingerbread
Worth the wait for Gingerbread, you did a wise choice in getting the IS.

Is it a good idea to buy HTC Incredible S instead of HTC Desire?

Only thing it is holding me back because it isn't popular phone so I might don't have much of support or any help for rooting, hardware issue or anything like that. I could just save $150 and go for HTC Desire, but I like 8mpx, front camera and the screen on HTC Incredible S. I like HTC Desire because it is quite popular and it has a lot of support, but Incredible S sounds and look much cooler.
Also excuse me for posting in wrong section, I couldn't find a correct section for general discussion of android phone (hardware).
EDIT: I posted this thread in both section Desire and Incredible S for unbiased opinion.
Of course it's a good idea, because that's exactly what i just did
The screens better on the IS, just search on youtube. Better contrast and colour rendition.
Got nothing against the size of the HD, i might sell and buy a Sensation when released.
If you're on about the original Desire, it just now looks so outdated IMO.
I wouldn't consider Desire s, heard one to many nightmare stories of wifi dropouts.

Can you root it and put a custom ROM? If so, does the guide exist?
if you searched further than your nose long is, u had the answer on that
Really depends on what you want to do with the phone. The screen display is a lot better than desire. If you just wanna a phone to use, IS is the choice. If you are a fun of installing custom ROMs, desire is probably a better choice. As far as I know, software rooting is not available yet for IS.
if you are comparing stock to stock...
the major advantage of having an IS is the internal memory... on a fresh stock rom...
Desire would have around 147MB for you to use for all your apps.. and you have to spare 30MB for OTA updates purpose...
if you have IS you have 1.07GB on a fresh rom... so many apps you can install without any worries
I switched last week from Desire to an IS.
I think it's a relief.
The screen is much better, it's a bit faster than the Desire.
Screensize is perfect for my pockets. Sound is pretty good.
Enough space for installing apps.
Also the touch buttons are cool.
Still I don't understand why this phone isn't that populair.
Dual cores

Becoz most people are keen on getting a dual core phone and they turn blind to see the features of the single core phones!

At first I was looking at a dual core as well.
But after all I thought: what is the real benefit at the moment?
I mean, I don't call that much a month, use internet a lot, play some simple games, listen to music and that's it.
My Desire could handle all those things very good.
I must say that I'm very happy with my IS and I'm glad I didn't wait for a dual core.
Bear in mind the Desire has some issues with multi-touch, and battery life isn't particularly good. It is readily rootable however, while some variants of the Incredible S are not.
My friend had a Desire nd i have an IS ... Go for the IS no doubt.. so fat the issues i ve seen in multi touch . battery life, screen , speed ( cause of RAM ) .. IS wins hands down

[Q] Not so many Incredible S users on xda?

I've moved across from the Desire forums and they're very busy, no doubt due to vast numbers of handsets being out there. The IS section looks fairly quiet in comparison, is that because of low sales on this model, or more the fact that the IS owners don't feel the need to root, mod etc?
it's a weird time right now for android phones....
Older phones are losing devs due to them moving on to newer phones, but there are so many newer phones that are actually good right now so dev support is widespread.
I would say it should pick up after a little while.
.
there is huge dev support for the IS becuase allt he euro devs are using IS and all the american devs are able to use droid incrediable 2's
look at our ROM index and its huge the phones only been out for 6 months (march it came out) and we got sense 2-3.5 being dev'ed on along with CM7 and other osap roms and MIUI

they're the same phone... just a different name because it is the US verizon version
I wouldn't flash a droid 2 rom onto the incredible though, different radios I think which could brick your device
Similar -- one is CDMA/GSM, the others are GSM only. Also, one has operator graffiti on it, the others don't.
This forum is not a high volume forum in my opinion. We have a few roms and a few devs but that's it. Look at the Desire HD forum. More devs, roms, and themes for their roms. Nobody does special themes for the Incredible S roms.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using xda premium
that other guy was right though, the incredible 2 forum looks a LOT busier
this phone seems to have slipped under most's radar, kind a like the Xperia Arc which is although a sex bomb but has no custom ROMs.
It's bc the roms we have do everything we need.
Sense? Go with revolution.
Sense 3? Do the add on for rev or use the less stable pyramid ports
Aosp? Miui and cm7 and other stock roms like rev no sense.
What else? It may seem less busy bc the progress was made on other devices then ported over.
Ie the desire hd, mytouch 4G, inspire, thunderbolt, etc etc etc have the same specs just different outside bodies.
So while its not bustling with chatter, its still good. Just my .02
I guess many users went for the DualCore phones, like the Sensation, LG Optimus and Galaxy S 2, that came out just after the IncS.
But there is still a lot of development for the IncS and som very skilled users/dev's in here ;-)
It is a very quiet forum for developing. Maybe because it was released when dual core phones were starting to kick off. So it ended up being a kinda meh device. I wish I still had my desire z but HTC stopped making it :/

[Q] Incredible S v/s Desire HD

Hello all,
I'm new on here as you can see. I've searched the forums for a possible answer to this question, but haven't found much in way of comparisons. I didn't know whether to post it on the IS or DHD forum so I thought I'd just post it on here.
I bought a Desire Z through a rather popular seller on eBay (I'm sure those in the know will probably be able to figure it out) and rest assured the experience has been average at best. The first Desire Z I bought had issues with the motherboard (would shut off unexpectedly) I searched for and tried all the solutions proposed on here, and while it's stable now, I'll likely return it. While the replacement would work fine, it wouldn't charge when plugged in (it charges for 5-10 seconds before the battery meter stopped moving). When I took it for repairs, they said it was irreparable because the charging port is too close to the mainboard to be tinkered with. Anyways, because it's too late for me to get a refund, I've been offered an Incredible S or a Desire HD as a free upgrade. I've done all the comparisons et al between these two phones and wanted your feedback on them. Aside from the obvious differences can anyone comment on the build quality/reliability of these two phones beyond the specs? I read somewhere online that the incredible S is "more stable" and has a "better monitor" (whatever that means). Also, is it a plus that HTC made it upgradable to 4.0.4 while didn't offer the upgrade to the Desire HD? Since I'm new to all this, I don't plan on rooting the phones anytime soon. Look forward to the replies.
Thanks
Both phones are almost the same hardware (soc, ram) . Most difference: Desire Hd have bigger LCD 4.3 vs 4.0 inches and battery in incredible s are better..

Yes, IncS got official ICS from HTC, when the DHD did not.
That does not really matter though, as there are many custom roms that are ICS for DHD, ported from other phones.
At the end of the day, it is your choice. I prefer the IncS because it is lighter and sexier, plus we have szeszo to cook us awesome roms. But DHD has got more developers, as it was the HTC flagship of 2011.
Keep in mind that if you are not planning to root, neither phones will perform on par with today's phones, as the chips are really outdated.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess my main concern was the build quality, stability and reliability more than anything else. LamboBull, I'm aware of that. I'll probably root it eventually, when I get some time to read the ins and outs of it. However, I tend to use it for really basic stuff. Mainly, text messaging, internet when on the go, WhatsApp, Viber and occasionally books to read. I rarely use it for anything intensive such as music, videos etc.

Some time ago I've got them both and I can tell U the same what U read before. One and only thing which I cannot agree is that the display in INC S is smaller but it is Super LCD so it's much brigther and colours are much better.

In that case, run with IncS. Extremely reliable in the fact that it performs day to day tasks with ease.
