tried 1 button (power), 2 button (vol down + power), 3 button, (both vol + power), captivate jig (301 ohm resistor), one-click odin (both vol + odin running in PC), still no go... did I miss any un-bricking methods?
it still charges (as it gets warm when charging from wall)
no PC <--> phone screen, no download mode, no boot, no AT&T screen, no boot loop, simply BLACK screen whatsoever....
guys, please help!!! I do not want to be the 1st one to brick the unbrickable Galaxy S devices....
Also, if anyone from Toronto could help with their homemade jig, in case mine was not properly made...
When you are using the 2 button method to try and get into Download mode, did you pull out the battery, SIM, and external SD before hand? The directions for that method should be:
1. Pull out battery, SIM, and any external SD. Phone should also be unplugged from the computer.
2. Leave the phone in this "off" state for at least 10 seconds
3. Hold Vol Up/Down
4. Insert Battery
With regards to the 301kohm resistor JIG, you cannot touch any bare metal on the JIG when you're trying to use it. Your body will change the resistance from 301kohm, to something like 250kohm...which won't work. Again with the JIG, you want to remove the SIM and any external SD card as well.
Does the computer recognize the phone is being plugged in when it's at the black screen?
Also does the black screen have the buttons on the bottom of the phone light up?
You might be able to force the phone to go into download with ADB.
Otherwise try the above post... pull everything and keep trying. It should go into Download mode.

The only other option I could think of if I were in that position BESIDES getting a replacement would be to use JTAG to restore the phone.
http://riffbox.org/
It's an expensive piece of equipment at $150 USD. You might be able to try calling up independent cell phone repair stores as I would think a few might have a JTAG.

Wow, sorry to hear that bud... and really disappointing to hear that its a common issue!!!
I'm pretty sure something like that happened to me. I was still in my 30 day window so I took it back to AT&T and replaced it. At first it would just loop the AT&T logo. Then it just went black. Typically if you just get a black screen the phone is done. I would be interested to know how much it cost to get Samsung to fix it. Just incase....

I was reflashing my phone, while in download mode, the power went off, and now my phone won't turn on or anything. I think my phone is bricked.
I bought the phone a week and a half ago. Will AT&T accept my phone for a replacement if I say it just stopped working? I have the $4.99/month Wireless Insurance, but won't they deny it when they find out I've been messing with it? What should I do?
Thanks!

It's bricked. Replaced battery, won't turn on no matter what I do to it.
There's a small scratch on the screen, and the micro USB charging port cover is messed up a bit from something sticky getting in there.
What should I tell AT&T? What's the likeliness of them declining my claim? Can they tell that it's been tampered with even though it's bricked?
Wrong forum. But I would use my insurance instead and tell them it just quit on me...
Try plugging into the computer, remove the battery reinsert the battery. Then hold volume up and power till red text comes on the screen from there switch to holding both volume buttons down and power then when the red text flashes to black release power and continue to hold both volume buttons. That should get you back to the downloading digger bot.

They won't give you a hard time on the software side - to them off is off - they can't tell if you bricked it - they will send it somewhere and have it flashed.
BUT - if there is something sticky in the USB port then they do have grounds to deny your claim - for all they know you poured juice in there.
Good luck.
Get it into download mode and flash it again with odin. Likely not bricked.

Nothing does, I tried every combo, SIM card in and out, replacing battery, USB plugged in and out, download mode, regular power button, recovery mode, what the guy suggested above; everything.
Not a single thing shows up on the screen.
You glanced over my question.
The version of firmware you were using before the flash and during the failed flash can be very pertinent to the key combination you need to get into download mode =P

I had the stock firmware, installed the JM5 firmware, reinstalled the JM5 firmware, while doing so, they power went off.
Just pressing Volume Down + Power got me into Download Mode everytime.
Edit: And yes, the battery was charged, it was at about 67% when I was flashing the firmware. How can I charge the battery for the heck of it when the phone is dead? Normally when you plug in the USB cable there's a charging animation on the screen. Nothing comes up at all, can a dead phone charge a battery, or does the software need to send the power to the battery?
Honestly I've had flashes fail at varying points during the flash and I've gotten the black screen before, ALWAYS I've been able to get it to work by following these steps:
Pull out everything, SIM, SD, Battery, USB, EVERYTHING
Close Odin (If it's open)
Reopen Odin
Insert battery, hold vol down (If this doesn't work hold both volume buttons NO POWER)
While holding the button(s) plug in USB
Don't touch the power at any point, if this fails and you want to try the other key combo, start the process over completely.

This man speaks the truth, listen to him.
If your insurance covers damage then destroy the phone and call att and tell them its been destroyed.
if not then it is possible that the power outage could have caused your phone to zap.
Flashing or not if you spilled stuff into the usb port your screwed. Week and a half and you scratched the screen and did that? I have tried to scratch mine with no succes. I say ditch that phone and get a GO phone. And have a mod delete this pointless thread already!!!!
Hey guys I think I actually did it. I was going to install the JPC Froyo Rom, and somehow booted into recovery in the ROM. Now whenever I turn the phone on it boots into recovery, and none of the button combinations work for putting it into Download mode so I can flash back to stock. On the i9000 thread it says that if you get into this situation you cannot flash back. Any of you guys run into this issue? If not then it looks like I'll be trying to convince an ATT rep to give me a new phone
Try powering off... Then hold vol up and down buttons then plug in usb.... That happened to me... Your not bricked

Nope sorry guys I know all of what you just said. As for plugging in USB while holding volume buttons, it'll just go to that battery charging screen, and adb doesn't work because it doesn't boot past recovery. Sorry guys but yes it was bricked. It's okay though because I just went to ATT and since they can't identify the problem they just replaced the phone
Thought mine was bricked one night, too. Same scenario. Tried dropping the SIM and SD card out even though I didn't think it would make a difference, but it did. Got to download screen and reflashed with ODIN.
Good luck.

If you pull the battery, then put the battery in. hold both volume buttons buttons, and then plug the phone into the computer, it didn't boot to download?
Im curious if you even tried to use the Odin one click thread
There are 4 or 5 ways in that thread on how to get to download mode. And how exactly does this relate to development...just another curious thought. Well, you are getting a new phone, just hope that ATT or Samsung don't try to figure out the cause of your phone being "bricked".
AGAIN!
Okay after this I swear I won't be messing around with Froyo anymore. Here's the story: I got into download on the replacement captivate. Tried to install JPC froyo, but it never started flashing so I unplugged it from Odin and then tried to turn it back on. It goes to the normal "connect phone to computer" screen. However no attempts to get back into download mode have worked. Holding both volume buttons and power until second black screen doesn't work, booting while holding volume down doesn't work, holding both volume buttons and then inserting USB cable doesn't work. I think I'm stuck in this screen unless there's some incredible way I have yet to try. Anybody have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate feedback from the experienced users (Zilch25, designgears, kaik, reaver117), because I think I'd be pushing it trying to get it replaced a second time in such rapid succession
To flashman2002:
I put it in this section because it's in the development section that most flashing and such occurs so I thought there would be the greatest knowledge base. And yes I've pored over the one click thread and none of the methods mentioned there have any effect!
Jeez, I just scared the **** out of myself. I ran the remove lagfix script and it rebooted my phone but it was just a black screen. So I take the battery out. Bad Idea. It showed the ATT screen but just black after that. I could get it into recovery mode but not download. Then I messed some more and would only show a vague disconnected pic.
Finally I got it into download by doing this: (had odin open before hand)
1. took everything out including sim and usb cable.
2. quickly inserted battery and held volume buttons and very quickly inserted usb.
I'm pretty sure its the speed that matters because I tried about 4 times and only when I did it really fast did it work.

I've been here before and just holding volume buttons and holding down power for it to boot twice and releasing would do it. Not so anymore. Can't get into download mode doing anything!
Well I read In the SRE thread I think that there are reports of newer phones not responding to any button combos. Bad batch they said not on purpose...
Also for the i9000 apparently you only have to hold the down volume key so since you flashed a i9000 rom try that if you haven't already.
You cant get into recovery right? Just holding volume and power then letting go of power after a bit?

Nope none of it works. I just got it replaced less then 3 hours ago and I already bricked it. I hope somebody finds out something that'll get this fixed. Maybe some way to force download mode through a computer application or something.

I know it doesn't help you out now, but when you remove the lag fix, just leave it set on the black screen. It's doing its thing. It will reboot when it's done. The home keys should still light up if you press them in this state...
Well thanks for your input anyway guys. Hopefully somebody figures something out. For now I guess I'll keep the SIM in my old iPhone 3G so I at least have a phone. Tomorrow I'll go to another ATT store in my area. Chances are the rep won't know what the hell that screen means and will replace the phone promptly.
Background: I was in the process of flashing my rom back to stock rom using Odin3 and it froze. Attempted to repeat the process and could not get it to enter the download mode. Use all of the 3 buttons combo methods, still no joy. Tried the 3 resistors (300 ohms) got it to go into download mode but did not have Odin ready to accept (Lost that download mode attempt). Repeated the process numerous times with no luck. My phone screen is BLACK always regardless of what I attempt to do. Would you consider this stage beyond recovery or is there hope beyond the black screen?
You might want to try the jig that is made to get it into download mode. You can make it yourself or buy one from mobiletechvideos.com
Here is the link. The video at the bottom shows you what it does and how to use it.
Here's a way that not too many people know about but always works for me:
1. Unplug phone from computer.
2. Remove battery, SIM, and external SD if you have one.
3. OPEN ODIN! You don't want to lose your chance again
4. Plug the USB cable back into the phone (remember, the battery is still not in the phone). DO NOT TURN THE PHONE ON.
5. Hold the volume rocker down (both the up and down volume keys).
6. Place the battery back in the phone while holding the volume rocker.
7. Download mode!

Lol but no, not too many people do.
This method is very much like another one, which requires you put in the battery first, then hold the volume down button and plug in the cord. But this one has you plug in the cord first, then put the battery in. This method worked for me when I got Phone -!- Comp, whereas the other one did not.
So you didn't burst my bubble at all, seeing as you're wrong. Thanks for the useful post though.
Maybe I am wrong but most of the people who helped me and people I talk to know about that technique lol. But maybe it's just coincidence.

Loggik, I appreciate your the method you have mentioned. I have tried that method and several others numerous time. I also used my (car) phone charger usb end, third pin closest to the headphone on one side and the second pin on the opposite side as jig (300 ohms) and it did not work. Not sure if the car charger is suitable for such. I also read somewhere that if your phone screen is black and unresponsive regardless of what method one would use, then the jig would be useless. Is that a true statement?

Hey guys,
This is another HELP! post, I recently tried to install the O B S S E S S I O N custom rom. I have installed serendipity before and never had a problem with it. I reverted back to the factory reset and everything appeared ok. Well, I got to the point where I installed the new rom and when it reboots, all I see is the "AT&T World Phone." The sound from the Galaxy S screen plays but it just stays on that same AT&T screen. I was going to go into downloading mode and do the Odin reset but the phone will no longer go into downloading mode. I'm just not sure what to do at this point, so any help is greatly appreciated.
Take out the battery SD and sim connect your phone to the computer and press Vol +- and insert battery. There are a few more key combos (depending on what Bootloaders you have) if none of them work i suggest getting a Jig. You can buy them in Ebay or Mobiletechvideos. You can make one alot faster and probably cheaper with this guide. Even if you are able to get in to down load mode its always a good idea to make/buy a jig to have around.
Thanks, I've tried to get it into download mode the way you described and it just does not want to do it. I had to buy a new Captivate yesterday, so I will probably just bring it back to the store and exchange it with another one, and just claim ignorance to the issue lol
I stand by the Jig though, anyone modding their captivate or any SGS should have a jig around.

This is true, but you have to hold vol up/vol down BEFORE you insert usb lol. I had the same issue. ended up being kernel was the problem. I was able to get into dl mode with vol up/down insert just fine, though. Like Bassplayer said, get a JIG it's like cheap insurance. Not full coverage, but it isn't going to leave you stranded either

The other way to do it is while your battery and sdcard and chip are out plug in the usb, then hit the vol up/down buttons, followed by placing your battery in while still holding the buttons.

Hi, I'm new to the xda forum although I've been reading it for about a year, I did search but unfortunately I couldn't find an answer to my problem.
My captivate got bricked when Odin froze during flashing, now I get the (phone) /!\ (Computer) screen, the computer isn't detecting my phone so I can't use that screen as download mode and adb isn't seeing the device, 3 button combos don't work because my power button doesn't work, I ordered a jig but everywhere I read it says that you insert the jig while the phone is powered down, but in my case as soon as I put the battery in the phone turns on (because the power button is stuck), so my question is, will the jig work from the (phone) /!\ (Computer) screen, if not what else can I do?
Thanks in advance,
Nik

I tried it but to no avail, to be honest I wasn't surprised as I didn't have connection issues until I got bricked so I that screen won't work as download mode, so will the jig work from that screen? If not what else can I do, any way to get the power button working without taking it apart? Any advice is very appreciated.
Thanks,
Nik
as bwolf56 said, you should be able to flash with the screen you srr seeing.
to get odin to see phone, try this-
start odin on pc.
leave battery out of phone.
hold up and down volume keys while connecting usb cable. release volume up and down keys.
If the above post by laughingT doesn't work (but it should)...
When ya get the Jig, try inserting it in 1st and then replace the battery. Maybe that will work even with ur power button problem.

I was hoping this would work, but whats supposed to happen? If I do that my phone doesn't power up, so it won't turn on without the battery basically.

Connecting the usb cable acts just like putting the battery in, therefor, it should power it up. Although, if it doesn't (give it a few tries), try with inserting the battery as well.
Also, using another pc sometimes work.

Try inserting the battery after the cable is plugged.
If u wanna make a jig (cheap, easy, quick), take a look at my signature link below. There is a link to a thread on how to make a jig.
Here it is....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9238587&postcount=1
I'm sure there r several youtube videos on how to make one as well, if u wanna go that route.

Is your battery charge? lol, sorry kinda outta ideas. Never had a phone not connect to a pc after someone went through all the steps in 4-2ndtwin's guide.
Perhaps go read on ADB, it might help you.

I tried adb commands but it can't see the device... I might try all those steps again later today and reply on here how that goes.
And the battery is charged.
Thanks everyone, if anyone has any other ideas please tell me, I'll try to dig out the 3rd laptop and try on that, hope it works.

Ok so the 3rd pc can't see it either, so the problem is in the device not the pc, I guess the only thing I can do is wait for the jig... or fix the power button... anyone know how that can be done, at least temporarily so I can use the 3 button combo?

You can take the phone apart and using electrical contact cleaner you can spray the button down and click it repeatedly and then repeat several times. That has worked for me in the past but only temporarily. I would just wait for the jig though. Also when you get the jig, remove your battery plug the jig in and then replace the battery since your power button isn't working. If it's going to go into download mode that will do it.

Thanks, glad to hear from someone with the same button problem haha, I heard about spraying it but after taking it apart I wasn't sure if I should spray directly at the button or behind it(I didn't have the spray anyway, just wanted to have a look in-case I have to do it). I'll wait for the jig and see how that goes.
I've had the problem where I couldn't connect to the computer from that screen as well.
The jig did the trick. Went out to the local Radioshack, purchased the resistors, and used them to start the phone. Sometimes that screen will act as download mode, sometimes it wont. For the times it wont, having a jig is always handy
I went ahead and purchased a pre-made jig as well. Just for backup.
