[Q] Still worth buying ? - XPERIA X1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I had XPERIA X1 for something like year but foolishly traded it for iPhone (big mistake). I loved its QWERTY keyboard, awesome design, that it was made of metal and of course WinMo. So I'd like to know if it is still worth buying and if there are any other (newer) phones in the market that have design similar to XPERIA or at least they are made from metal (not necessarily every part) and of course (that is a must) have QWERTY keyboard. Please tell me, what do you suggest.

From the sheer amount of issues with the X1, get an X2 instead or something else if you want a QWERTY keyboaard on WM!

I'm searching for device that is made from good materials and it doesn't have to have WinMo (any OS will do), just physical QWERTY keyboard (maybe also unique design like XPERIA).
PS: Still, I'd like to know if you think that XPERIA X1 is worth buying or not.

Take a look at the google g2, my friend has one and don't let that 800 mhz fool you...it is buttery smooth.....

Depends on the price. If you can get an X1 for a hundred bucks, it's a good buy. If not, get one of the newer phones. Windows Mobile "classic" is a dead platform, haven't seen new useful apps in months.

i think you should buy t-mobile g2/htc desire z (hardware is the same, but htc desire z has htc sense)

get the Motorola Milestone or if on a budget, HTC Fuze

Should I trade my HTC Pure with an iPhone?

I recently put my HTC Pure on craiglist for trade with iPhone. I got response from one girl who wants to trade her iphone 3G 8GB (she said she bought it 3 months back) with my HTC Pure.
I have less than a day to make this decision. And now I am so confused... Should I do this trade? Is it a fair deal?
A few more questions (may be this is not the right place to ask these questions but if anyone has any idea then please let me know.)
1. Is there a forum as good as xda-developers.com for iPhone? If yes then what is it?
2. Can I use my current ATT Phone Simcard into iPhone without buying the costly dataplan?
3. How will I make sure that the iPhone is not stolen one?
4. I have heard about "iPhone Clones". How to make out the difference between iPhone and "iPhone Clone"
No way!!!
I wouldn´t do it

Any Specific reason m8? I know I love my Pure and I am a big WM! I am doing this deal because I already have one more WM phone (ATT Tilt Kaiser) and now I want to see why does everyone talk about iPhone a lot.
There has to be something... Dont you think?
do it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
is she local? if so, meet at a AT&T store and do the deal there....compare her iphone with the one in the store and find out if hers is a clone or not.
3G has a slow processor, and No real multi tasking. it's going be a downgrade for you, that's what i think. Lol. don't get sucked in with the candy clothed games
Do you know how slow the processor is?
I mean do you have an idea about the specifications of iPhone 3G processor vs. HTC Tilt?
I got both the 3G and the Pure, so I can comment on this
HTC is a work phone. Its designed to get stuff done. Office Mobile, multitasking, not to mention the inherent flexibility of WM. As a Pure owner, I'm sure you're aware of all of this.
All of this will be GONE on the iPhone. In its place will be a a great phone to consume media, HUGE selection of applications, a much more responsive touchscreen, and pretty much the best media experience on a phone.
What you gotta decide is which one of those things are more important to you. I couldn't decide on either, so I have been jumping back and forth for the past two months as what I need to get done with my phone changes.
Though, with the recent BS patent lawsuit from Apple, I havent been able to look at my iPhone or MacBook Pro the same way since...
I sold away my iPhone 3G after 3 months of having it. I need compatible Windows phone that will work with my PC so I stick to my Diamond2, TouchPro2 and 838Pro. For truly screen display, I have the Samsung Pixon 12 and OmniaII with AMOLED display which are very good in bright sunlight. For 12MP photo snapshots I have the Sony Ericsson Satio and the Samsung Pixon to do the job if I don't have my DSLR with me. The iPhone doesn't come close to any of these phones that are definite keepers for me. Therefore I sold the iPhone away without any regret. Talking about video calls on iPhone??? Apple have to do something about it.
I agree with demonic_pascal. We have both in my familly and I know what I prefer. Ever tried to to transfer files to/from the iphone? Its a PITA bigtime. I don't agree with comments about the media experience etiher. The Topaz will play far more file formats than the iPhone. If you are looking for a game console then get the iphone. If you want a phone that gets thigns done stick with teh Topaz.
2. Can I use my current ATT Phone Simcard into iPhone without buying the costly dataplan?
I dont think this is possible, cuz once the sim card is put into the phone, it will automatically update your phone to ATT database and you will force buy a data plan. You can try to unlock your iphone, I heard this works, but not so sure though.
4. I have heard about "iPhone Clones". How to make out the difference between iPhone and "iPhone Clone"
There are several post online that show you how to spot a fake iphone. Generally, the cover is not as polish, the Apple logo, the fine print on the back, the screen size.
The iphone is the good phone, it has a fast processor that runs games and app smoothly but I still wouldn't make the trade though. First, the Iphone 3G now is kinda obsolete. Second, she said that you have one day to make the trade, did she give you the good reason? If not, most of the time people just want to scam you so they put the time limit to make you think its a good deal. So just make sure that its real, tell her to post proof and ask her why the rush? Lastly, the ideal of owing an Iphone is just not that intriguing to me.
Never dream of it!

Lol Already sold my Pure for 300.
Now buying the iPhone in 270 from a local store. Lets see what happens.
I will post my experience. But I am still a XDA coz I have a TILT
Got rid of iphone. But I will say it is a lot better and finger friendly operating system than windows mobile. Bought htc hd 2 thereafter but sold that too eventually... After using iphone I can't use windows mobile lol.
Right now I have google nexus one. Wow... I love this phone more than any thing ever! Android is the best operating system. It is as finger friendly as iphone and you can customize it like windows mobile.

Answer is no even tho you already made the deal. Just buy an iPod Touch and have it as mp3/video player+internet+twitter+facebook+email. I got a TD2 right now together with an iPod and I think it's a nice combination because I waste my battery in less than 6 hours if I start listening to music or watch videos.
I will get a HD2 later on tho but I will only use it for telephone, internet, email, sms, videos and all that stuff. iPod as mp3 player, always.
Iphone has about 400 times more apps and games. the 8 gig is slower but the 32gig and 64 are faster better hardware. if it were my i would trade my pure for the iphone 8gig. I have an ipod 32 gig i compared it next to my buddys 32gig iphone. as for app launching etc.. they were pretty much equal.. but my daughters 8 gig ipod next to my pure the the ipod is faster as in moving around and lauching most apps.
but hey. good luck

HTC falling further and further downhill...

So HTC seems to have run completely out of new and innovative ideas and when they do now it's just depressing. Their recent devices are just re-releases of the same device over and over except with a bigger processor and perhaps a better camera. They barely bother to change the chassis anymore. The last decent innovation I saw HTC come up with was the G1 Z sliding mechanism and how did they follow that up? G2 Z-hinge? Yeah, how's it hanging? After this they went on to release the HTC surround? Is dropping acid mandatory to be a hardware designer at HTC these days because those guys had to be on something to think that was a remotely decent device. I mean all in all aside from processors HTC's hardware is third rate. Their outdated screens are just depressing and their build-quality leaves something to be desired. What happened to the days when HTC seemed like the future of phones? Did their time already come and pass?

Huuhahah. nice word play. It leaves something to be "desired"
On a more serious note. i agree. no innovative designs from the guys @HTC.
Also specs wise i really have the feeling the competition is starting to get ahead. More 1080p dual core shiney stuff htc!. get with the program.
HTC chassis design is the best so you could say there is no point trying to re-invent the wheel. Without making drastic, and therefore unpopular changes to their designs there are only so many things they can do!
I do think their quality control could be better though and i'm still fuming that they did diddly squat to rectify the hardware issues with the Nexus One. Rather than flooding the market with derivitive products perhaps they should focus on making fewer but better handsets.
your still a fool if you buy somthing over the hd2 and your a htc fan (and your not a millionaire)
karma shall reward the ones who are patient
HTC got into the popularity game now, when before they were in the quality game. Carriers WANT HTC to make phones for them, and since carriers like to release a new phone every two months, there is no way HTC can be innovative. HTC is in it for the money, which is what most companies do. And you tell me, if you had a skill, made decent money on it, then a few people wanted you to use your skill towards their business, and all will pay you a ****load, you would do it.
After reading a Thunderbolt review another glaring HTC oversight was apparent. The micro usb charging port is on the side of the device, which is bad enough, but it's on the side that will be down when using the kickstand in Landscape, so you can't watch a movie and charge simultaneously
How are they making such fundamental errors?
On my experience is nothing related only to HTC, every brand is going slow as they want us to buy mobiles every year, if they launch (and sure they can) a super ultra nice device a lot of us would go for it and probably won´t upgrade as fast as they want.
So they want our money and that´s because they won´t go as fast as you want...
Just my opinion...
now hang on let's not be super drastic about htc and trust me, I've been extremely critical of htc
see
http://wmpoweruser.com/editorial-me-to-nokia-thank-you/
and while I have been critical, I am intrigued with their new button layout and design. It does look a bit more modern, but does that mean we users will get a better experience vs. the famed tp2 keyboard?
Now otherwise I do agree with one thing - HTC is in an era of non innovation. I would love to have a vertical slider from htc to compete with the dell venue pro; I'd also like to have some more odds and ends from htc. Why consumers aren't getting them is beyond me. Perhaps it legality, which would make sense. But overall, their chassis designs need a major change...
HTC still is stable and will surely have a huge share in the mobile market for the next 2-3 years (till tablets come into the mainstream)
See Nokia, they have been completely wiped off the mobile scene. The new E series is a huge flop. Even with their publicity nothing is happening with Nokia. It is alive only because of the low-end mobiles.
Secondly, SE. Even they are not aware of what they are doing. Just making mobiles, selling and forgetting about them. They are'nt even worth of being in the market
Cant say anything about samsung
As much as i know, Motorola will be the leading player in the coming 2-3 years. Seeing its exhibits in the CES '11 they surely have a lot of innovation coming in the mobile industry

Let's be real, what else can you do aside from making the outer case of the phone a different color? Only thing you can do, is add on features and carrier support. 3d being one of them, a 4.3" device with a more updated network modem(3.8" for Tmobile), being the Mytouch 4g, Inspire 4g, Thunderbolt, and the Evo. You have your sliders with updated network modems, g2 for Tmobile, and Evo Shift for Sprint. HTC has always gone with a couple different design choices, and personally I think they look great. They can only do so much with the SoC they use, seeing that they use qualcomm SoCs that still perform pretty nice, even the 65nm versions(But not the gpu. Adreno 200 sucks). What else do you want from them? A TV with an LTE modem that runs Android 2.3 with Sense in 3d? Admitting, the HD7 has some problems with build quality but every company has an issue like that with a device. Hell, Samsung has many devices with problems.
One thing that's hindering everybody is battery technology. That's a hurdle to overcome. I wish that the manufacturers would quit with this bigger is better approach that they seem to be taking. I'd like a phone i can actually put in my pocket!
Of course having bigger devices makes it easier to fit all the components into a slim form factor, and a lot of people seem to like them, so the manufacturers benefit. But these bigger screens have got to be having an impact on battery life, right?

Two things to say up front:
1. I am an HTC fan.
2. I am a former Samsung (Moment) customer and I would never go back.
Now, I do think Samsung has flashier styling, and probably HTC's design department could take some lessons from them.
That being said, I still love my EVO 4G and wouldn't trade it for the world.
Well at least you guys have 4g. Our only 4g carrier retardedly made an exclusive deal with Samsung for their phones. Sigh...

Would you recommend the Droid 3?

I recently bought an HTC Desire Z but was given the T-mobile model which doesn't suppport 850Mhz 3G, which is what my local network runs. The eBay seller has a Droid 3 XT883 that he can exchange my HTC for, would you recommend your Droid?
I really like the QWERTY keyboard on the HTC but there seems to be less in the way of ROMs for the Droid. Any other models you can suggest?

Its not a bad device, its got a solid cpu and ram which is still pretty speedy, the keyboard is one of the best available ( besides the droid 4's ), but in terms of roms and dev support its almost dead. They devs still around are still working very hard but sometimes a lot of things are outdated , and if you get brick it can be hard with limited support.
It is quite durable and reliable, easy to root as well, once hash develops the JB ROM it'll be a solid phone. I use mine day to day, on an ICS ROM, and it works well. However, doesn't mean I won't buy the fighter once is out, due to the fact that its a bit old. But I would recommend it.

Never even approach to this phone. It is the worst smartphone I have ever not only owned, but even held in my hand. This phone has managed to disappoint me not even in Motorola, but in whole Android. I'm pulling the thread to get brand new flagship on WP8 - thankfully we will never see WP8 on Motos. F..k Moto, damn droid!
the biggest pro to this phone, the keyboard, sucks for me. i've had 2 now and both have had problems with double pressing keys and some keys (particularly the question mark) not wanting to register. plus there's very little support. stay away
edit: on the pro side i can use it to open my beer bottles because of the metal bezel
DROID 3 - good specs, terrible support/updates. biggest drawback at the moment is the locked bootloader. i'm currently trying to decide whether to keep it (hoping we can actually get an OS update) or sell it.
if you're looking for the QWERTY keyboard and full 3G band support, have a look at the Xperia Pro mk16a. It's a good piece of equipment already running Jelly Bean.
Droid 3 could be good for you
If the following apply to you, the Droid 3 is a great phone:
1. You are OK with not having the latest and greatest version of Android
2. You don't mind rooting
3. 3G rather than 4G is OK for your purposes
Number two kind of applies to all Verizon Android phones in my book. They are so incredibly full of crapware as they come from Verizon that the hardware seems basically crippled by it. However rooting it and installing Titanium backup and then freezing all the crapware so it can't run transforms the phone. Personally I don't much care if I ever get ICS or JB on it. Once de-crapified the version it has is fine in my book. Then again my needs are probably less demanding than others. For me my phone is just a glorified PDA for getting my email, providing appointment notifications and storing my contacts. I use Touchdown for those things and that is going to be pretty much the same no matter what phone I use it on.
The speakerphone is the best I've had so far, very clear sound. The camera is above par as well, crisp and little grain, certainly better than my Atrix.
Absolutely

Quads are useful for games that utilize it. Apps not as much. And android overall no. But the adreno 320 is a pretty good GPU.

I came from a One X to the XpT and I've not looked back.
As it stands, the HTC doesn't have S-Off so you need to use a PC every time you want to flash a new ROM.
HTC have really screwed the pooch and I'll never buy HTC again until they sort themselves out.
As it sounds like you enjoy modding your phones, I'd give the HTCs a wide berth.
Perfect example is CM10, it took months to get CM10 to be on get.cm for the HTC. It took a few days for the XpT.
If you decide you want the HTC One X anyway, I'll sell you my black 32GB one.

Will the HTC One become as legendary as the HTC HD2

For anyone who is on XDA a few years and previously owned a HD2 or Leo as it was also known I'm wondering if the One will become as legendary or even surpass the HD2?
The HD2 was a revelation as developers could do so much with it, the HD2 forums used to be a hive of activity and i remember the first time developers managed to flash android on what was a Windows 6.5 phone we thought it was amazing, given the one is looking like it's gonna be very very popular let's hope some of the developers come onboard and make this phone even better.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Short answer? Yes.
The HD2 is still an awesome phone. Even stock it's still very competent at what it does 3+ years after its release.
What it can't achieve in stock mode you can accomplish whatever is left by booting into Droid.
Where can phone specs go after the HTC One?
11? The One already does 11.
HTC HD2 was one of the first if not the first phone that had all at once:
- capacitive (glass) screen
- big screen
- somewhat open architecture, so you can install other OS
- powerful CPU (although that is relative in time)
- good design
- ability to run Android (cool OS) while it originally run Windows (meh OS)
HTC One is not that special. Not even close. It can be remembered as one of the most pretty phones, but not more.
I lost my S3 and luckily there was an unused HD2 lying around the house. Wow, amazing phone. After all these years it's still awesome. I tryied out WP8 on it, works flawlessly; might try out android soon with dual boot.
The phone just looked good, even after all these years it's not outdated at all, the design is amazing and the components are top notch. Really great work. Let's hope the One can do the same
It was hampered with only 512mb ram - It was full in no time with android on it. I tried running it from sd card but it was stuttery.
The Tmobile 1gb might have been a different story - But for me it's a bit over hyped
I believe that at this time, owning any flagship except Xperia Z (it's great, but many mediocre parts lead to being unimpressive for some) will make almost anybody happy, whether S4, GPro, One or upcoming phones.
However, the bad production and marketing cannot make One fly. True story.
Ok about marketing, even HTC said they will put more effort, but still no where near the huge amount of endowment from Samsung, for sure.
But production is a bigger problem. Choosing aluminum is not wrong for the quality of product itself, but a bad idea for production.
No matter how good the One is or becomes, it will never top the HD2.
It was so far ahead of its time it was unreal, held down by Windows Phone, I am pretty sure it ran Android better than my Sensation ever did and of course it could run whatever it wanted.
The HD2 was unrivaled, but the One has the S4 and the Xperia ?something? with the same chipsets.
I love my One tho!
No.
When the HD2 came out, it was really different & powerful compared to what was available, but with the HTC One, there are many close competitors. The S4, LG, iPhone5, Xperia Z, HTC's own DNA/Butterfly.
The HTC One is a great phone, but it is NOT considerably better than the competition.

You do understand that HD2 was released 3 and a half years ago, right? How can be over hyped if it can run today WP7.8 really smooth and ICS/JB from NAND with some lag here and then, but completely usable and fine?
What other 3 and a half years phone can do that? What other 2013 phone can do that?

Indeed.
Looking three and a half years ahead:
Someone invents virtualization for the HTC One which allows you to run WM 6.5 / 7 / 8/ 8.5 /
Ubuntu / Symbian and a host of other operating systems and legacy apps in RAM / virtual RAM
Let's hope the HTC One has the endurance that the venerable HD2 has.
Surely, all phone I pick always is legendary, I still believe on my choice.
Wasn't the HD2 just an EVO 4G with a crappier camera and no kickstand?
Honestly, no it won't.
Of course it would be amazing if it ever happened but what are the chances of it happening?
The HD2 is the most developed phone ever and even though it's so old, it can still run the latest Android updates and WP updates aswell. I don't think any other phone ever will be as legendary (in terms of what it has achieved) as the HD2.
It was ahead of its time by a long way and that's what helped the success of it.
The HTC One isn't ahead of its time by such a difference, even though it's the best phone around.

T-mobile 1gb? I remember the international version got only 448mb ram & 512mb of ROM and the T-mobile version got 512mb ram and 1gb ROM. Just saying, as others might think 'T-mobile 1gb' in a different way.
And in those days, I felt jealous as the T-mobile people got a great device with much higher storage and 1gb internal storage and 512mb ram were awesome. And it became great as Android is not popular and there's no galaxy series and no competition. Apart from all these things, the HD2 got great developers like COTULLA and Darkstone. I remember his team releasing MAGLDR bootloader for HD2 as a new year 2011 gift for the world, I can still remember that moment after I saw that post along with the stock version of Android with Sense. And one word to say about Darkstone, he made a build which has used Ram as Nand, instead of Phone storage. But the device was never perfect in hands, It can only be used as a secondary. All this happened, as the device was completely unlocked and after all it got great developers, who made it legendary.
@OP I don't think it's ever possible again with any device. Now a days it's taking at least a year time to achieve S-Off and some like One X(International) may take even 2 years, after that it's old and a newer one arrives, and everyone including the developers think of that new one. Same routine!
It might happen, if the bootloader is completely unlocked and if the device is capable of dual boot etc, which I see has a 0% chance. So, it's waste of time to compare any device with HD2.
I was thinking this myself, the HD2 is probably the most "loved" phone ever on these forums and for good reason, even though I jumped ship to Samsung I used to still pop into the HD2 forums for a look and was amazed that development was still thriving and still is albeit on a much smaller scale these days.
Can't wait to get the HTC One but will always have a soft spot for the HD2
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
@shree.cse: I totally agree with you. Cotulla is a "genius", but Darkstone1337 in the beginning played an important role.
A very important factor was that HD2, Desire/Nexus and HD7 shared the same hardware, which made easier to port different OS. Also, HD2 was the top phone, there was no competition, you could not get a similar top Android phone. So, many of us bought the HD2 because of that, but after using Android, WM felt old. There was a "need", an "urge" to port Android into it, which also happened with WP after HTC announced that HD2 would not get WP7 because it hadn't 3 button layout (once again f**ed by HTC).
Things are different today, Android is much bigger than WP and the choice is made between top Android phones, not top different OS phones. Top phones keep coming out, incrementally - but not substantially - better, so it's hard to a phone to become such a legend, with such hacking involved. It is simply not needed.
I am always jealous and always blown away by how amazing the hd2 is, and how it still has unbelievable development 3yrs in. I remember in April 2010 trying to decide between hd2 and Evo 4g. It was too hard for me to leave sprint, so I went with Evo (which also still has a pretty amazing level of development),
No phone will be as legendary as hd2. I am really interested in getting a One, but the amazing devs for my device (Evo LTE) already have ported the one/sense 5 to our device, so that will hold me over for a bit

@shree.cse: I totally agree with you. Cotulla is a "genius", but Darkstone1337 in the beginning played an important role.

Well said mate, but Afaik, it's Microsoft decision of not upgrading HD2 due to button layout. And they did the same with HD7 as well, saying some other b******t reason.

Cotulla is trying to port Win 8 RT to HD2 Once in a while I go check his twitter account to see what he's doing. It would be great if he bought a HTC One, but he finds Android boring.
Darkstone IDK, I think he's no longer on XDA. I sometimes check his twitter account, but don't see anything "xda dev" related.
