I have a N1 with FRF91.
After my FroYo update, I rooted using Universal Androot.
I made backups with My Backup Pro and Titanium Backup.
A little later I used root to remove the (useless in Canada) Amazon MP3 app.
However, I now can't flash any ROM I've tried. Looking at logs seems to indicate it's because of the missing Amazon MP3 app not being found to update. I've tried restoring the Amazon MP3 app using Titanium Backup, but it will not restore the app.
The Batch Restore process runs and appears to restore correctly, but the App is not restored.
Now of course, I can't update using third party ROMS, or modified (rooted) official ROMs. Worse, I'm now getting really annoyed by the FRG update notifications. The phone is constantly trying to receive and install the latest updates. I'd love to be able to do this but that fails too.
I definitely want to Restore Amazon MP3 first off.
Next, can anyone please suggest how I can do one of the following?
- Upgrade using a modified (rooted) FRG ROM?
- Restore to factory FRG ROM
Note that my Nexus One is an AT&T/Bell Canada model that is rooted as mentioned above and has ROM Manager installed along with ClockworkMod Recovery.
Finally, what's the best way to resolve this issue in the future?
How can you root and still receive or manually apply updates?
I can't imagine I'm the only one with this problem.
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm in the same boat as you. I guess maybe I just didn't backup the actual app with TB because I couldn't find the apk in the backup folder like I could for other apps.
This thread has a link to the Amazon MP3 apk which I was just able to install. The app seems to work, but that post is from 2009 so I don't know if there will be any problem with version differences.
Now I'm just waiting for my phone to bug me about the FRG83D update again so I can see if this fixes it!
Go to this thread (look at thread #4)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=800772
I too was in the same position, missing Amazon MP3 even though I backed it up with TB. It did not restored.
I was able to flash the stock FRF91, than FRF91 root, than FRG83 root.
(I lost WiFi so I flashed Cyanogen 6 instead)
But you can flash the first file to get you back to stock FRF91
I don't think you not being able to flash ROM is because of the missing Amazon MP3 (you will not be able to update via OTA).
I believe Amazon mp3 may be the reason. The problem is, when you remove it, you take it from /system. When you reinstall, it installs to /data, like all apps. You need to find a way to get it back into the system partition...

Did the trick, thanks!

That did the trick!
After installing this (old) Amazon MP3 version, I was then able to install the FRG83(D) ROM found here on XDA (Thanks Geo411m !) without any issues.
I did a wipe and I've spent the afternoon re-installing the apps that didn't restore on their own.
This FRG83(D) seems very good so far. It's stable and very fast. I'm a lot happier with my trusty old N1 now. It had been getting pretty unstable and I was getting tired of being nagged by the OTA update messages. Best part is that I haven't lost root. Oh, yeah and I also installed the optional black status bar mod which I really like. Not to mention it'll help prevent burn-in.
Anyway, just FYI. I had previously rooted with Universal Androot. Though that option appears to be gone with >=FRG83
so I'm glad the D ROM here was already rooted.
After root I had installed ROM Manager Pro and used that to install ClockWorkMod Recovery. That's what I used to install the new D ROM after fixing Amazon MP3 using your .apk link.
Anyway, I really love my Nexus One and this update has reinforced this. Though my statements in my "3 wishes" post still hold. I'd love to have more app storage and a front camera, but at least now I can wait a while for a really good new phone actually worthy of replacing my N1 to come along.
I guess I'll keep my N1 for at least another 6 months and spend my money on a NotionInk Adam instead, assuming it comes out this month as every speculates. I really want one of those bad boys including the PixelQi screen.
Added new Radio - so far so good
So today I also updated my radio to the latest Korean radio.
It seems to work fine (so far) with the Gen411m ROM.
We'll see how good this combination is as I've been experiencing the WiFi drop issues.
I can't complain about the speed though

I have the exact same Kernel that u have in ur pic.....not sure why ....perhaps they got more than one leaked test version ...
Change log- not quite sure. Quite a bit for me coming from 2.1.
I had to go back and redo su.
I also had to uninstall rom manager, run bootstrap and then reinstall rom manager in orderto load the new tranquility rom by p3 via recovery.
I am not having any market problems.
I had to reinstall adobe flash after tranquility rom. Love having flash now.
Good times and enjoying it.
Tranquil Froyo 2.3.13.MB810 FTW
Also, no market fix in that current build, so i made one if any need it...
Modded build.prop - Changes below
Market Fix
ro.telephony.call_ring.delay=1000
windowsmgr.max_events_per_sec=60
wifi.supplicant_scan_interval = 90
dalvik.vm.heapsize=32m
Similar to this post - LexusBrian400 - [UPDATED][MOD] LOTS of Build.prop edits! but includes market fix on new 2.3.13 release build.
2.3.13 Market Fix
I read on another forum that since bootstrap/koush don't have boot loader access, the kernel cannot be updated unless using the verizon sbf...

That's correct, kind of. Kernel and all can be updated through a correctly signed update.zip from Motorola not just an sbf. P3 and company have the full update. As in Kernel, system, the works. They aren't releasing it due to C&D worries, so we, the lowly, only get the new /system files. There definitely is a new kernel in that update, whether it contains any new changes that are worthwhile is a good question.

I had the same issue when restoring a nandroid of fission. Market wasn't restoring all of my apps so I restored an old rom to make a backup. I restored my fission nandroid to restore the apps and I couldn't do anything. Everything I did got a force close.
yea it has to be something with Fission, because I could restore back to my rubix 1.0 with no problems.
No recovery
I am having a strange issue that I don't know how to fix. I flashed Fission 1.0 and then the 1.0 phone fix and both went fine. Now I have just downloaded 1.1 Test 4 and the fix and when I try to get into recovery the phone just reboots normally. I have checked and bootstrap does have SU permission but it won't boot. I also tried getting into recovery from Rom Manager with no luck.
try reflashing in rom manager, and then reload bootstrap also. for some reason you have to do that every time you want to boot into clockwork, or at least I do.

Tried and tried, no dice.
I finally figured it out though. I had to uninstall bootsrap and then delete /system/bin/hijack and /system/bin/logwrapper and then rename logwrapper.bin to logwrapper and reboot. I then was able to fully reinstall bootsrap and got it working.
Once we are actually in boostrap we use the volume rocker to go up and down, but do we use the "menu" key to select stuff?
1) Flash the phone with the stock ULYFR_U4_1.2.6 SBF file
2) Obtain root and sideloading via aRoot
3) Update phone with the OTA OLYFR_U4_1.5.7
Once OLYFR_U4_1.5.7 is installed, you will NOT be rooted, but you will have sideloading. This should suffice for some users until root is achieved.
I personally think the OLYFR_U4_1.5.7 is worth losing root for a bit. In my own experience, the update has smoothed out the Atrix noticeably. Only time will tell.
If this helps anyone, please let me know.

My question is will the update still be there today if we flash back to 1.2.6 and reroot with aroot to get the update because I'd hate to not be able to get the update again. Like you stated, it seems to be more stable as well running a lot smoother.

This is entirely unnecessary, as you can just install apps through adb still on 1.5.7.
Just run:
Code:
adb.exe install <package>.apk
Where <package> is the name of the app you want to install. Reflashing back to stock to install the apps is a waste of time.
You are absolutely right, if someone wants to use ADB.
Sideloading independent of a computer is important to me personally.

Not sure if you would receive the update via OTA with that. If you were to flash that SBF followed by aRoot, would you receive the update? If you can confirm anyone receiving the update on 1.5.2, then you SHOULD be golden.

Wrote a simple BAT file to automate to process a little...
Basically...
1) Extract the files to a directory and put the apk(s) that you wish to install/sideload in that same directory.
2) Connect your device and make sure usb debugging is enabled and all usb drivers are installed.
3) Drap and drop an APK file onto the BAT file, and it should install sucessfully onto your device. Command window will return "Sucess" if all goes well.
This is a really simple BAT file, i'm not all that great at coding or writing bat files, but I hope this helps some people. The devs might be able to write a better script. Hopefully someone will crack this update soon and figure out how to root!
Right on man! This will be great for folks when they are installing .apk files through ADB.

ANNOUCEMENT 05/18/2011 @8:33am: This mod is in BETA status. This means that if you do not know what you are doing, you should not be installing this. Knowing what you are doing includes, but is not limited to the following:
Working knowledge of ADB
Understanding of CWM and it's backup/restore functions
Understanding of what an SBF is and how to flash it
If you do not, at the very least, meet those requirements please do not install this onto your phone. This is a beta test, and I will not be supporting users who say, "tried to install but now my phone says red light and its really hot how do i make a phone text?"
I'm really not trying to be a **** about it, but these kinds of things should be researched and learned before you install ANY mods on your phone, let alone a beta release. There's plenty of available tutorials on all of these things.
UPDATE 05/12/2011 @11:31pm: b0.2 release. Fixed most of the bugs, combined the webtop fix into the full install. Webtop should work properly now, with LXTerminal icon in the top status bar. I prefer it that way, but you can invoke awn-manager from lxterminal and add a link to the bottom bar if you want. This should be safe to apply over b0.1. I'm changing nomenclatures. All mods like this are henceforth known as P-ROMs. And you will like it. I have spoken.
UPDATE 05/12/2011 @7pm:*FIXED* Made a patch for webtop breaking, install after the main zip. You can install both at the same time. Will merge the two files later tonight. File posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13729463&postcount=39
UPDATE 05/12/2011: *FIXED* Webtop breaks when you install this. It's recoverable, so if you don't use it that often or at all, don't worry about it. I should have a patch by end of day.
Stayed late at work and had some extra time, so I got around to putting this together. This is tested and is working perfectly on my device.
Quick feature list:
Deodexed
Custom boot logo
AppWidgetPicker (better widget management)
Enables sideloading
Ad blocking
Installs AT&T tethering APN
Enables desktop flash content, i.e. Hulu (You MUST install flashplayer 10.2 from market prior to installing the ROM. You must also use a browser that lets you set your user agent to Desktop.)
Clears Dalvik-cache
Removes the AT&T bloat
Disables background media scanning (speeds phone up a LOT)
Webtop without need for dock (through micro-hdmi cable)
Preferred install location for apps
Disables SD card mount sound
Enables ADB to run as root (still need further testing on this, not sure exactly how this is supposed to function)
Enables Google location services (does not send private information or drain your battery, it just allows apps to use cell location as opposed to GPS if a location is needed)
Lowers delay when placing a call (1 second as opposed to 2.5 which was just obnoxiously long)
Increases wifi scan interval
Decreases screen activation delay from proximity sensor
Increase RAM available to dalvik VM
Adds lxterminal shortcut to webtop, allows webtop customization

That would be the best option, yes.
EDIT: Thanks those who offered to help, got it
If anyone out there can help me, I'd really appreciate it.
I have a Nexus 6, Verizon, running Pure Nexus 5.1.1 (screenshot below)
I've been getting this irritating message for weeks now, stating the "Layers Manager" can't update via the Google Play Store. I don't know how to fix this and it's become quite annoying every night when I update my apps before bed.
Screenshot of said problem below.
I'm by no means an expert at ROM management, but I went from rooted stock to this ROM because I got tired of the google security update not working, due to my being rooted. I really like this ROM and this is the only problem I've had with it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you!

in the "what's new" section of the play page it says for error code 505 is caused when trying to update over the v4.3 beta #4 version being a system app. I can't remember 100% if pure nexus rom has it installed in such a way but essentially the error is fixed by uninstalling the old version and installing the new version.

Thanks so much for this tip.
I just tried uninstalling the app, but it won't let me. I went into apps-all-layers manager, but there is no uninstall option
yea since its error 505 its installed as a system app so you would need to use titanium backup or some other "debloating" tool to remove it. Make sure you backup your theme preferences inside the app so you don't have to resetup everything.
For titanium backup you would open the Backup/Restore tab and find the layers app in the list. First off hit the Backup! button so you'll have something to fall back on in case of problems, then hit the red Un-install button. It may ask for a confirmation. Then you should be able to go and install the google play updated version.

Trying this now, thank you.
Will post update.
**UPDATE**
I tried what you said and it worked!
I uninstalled Layers via Titanium and then tried to update via Play Store, but got the same error. So I rebooted the phone, then went back into Play Store and it installed. Hopefully this will be a fix in the future. I don't know what Layers even is. I don't ever use it.
Thank you so much for your help!

It's an app for installing layer themes.
