unlock Samsung Captivate - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How i can unlock Samsung Captivate? so i can use on T-mobile its new phone. is there any risk?

Yes, you can. There are plenty of posts on how to do it here.
The only 'risk' is that you won't get T-mobile's 3G, only Edge, as the Capitvate doesn't include T-mobiles 3G bands.

question about oneclick root / unlocking bootloader for ROMS?

hi, i'm from the x10 forum converting to a nexus one =) I searched around and I'm a little bit confused about rooting for flashing roms. I see some guides about unlocking the bootloader first, then rooting. ( i think old method??) Now theres the one click root, am i required to unlock the bootloader first, then use the 1 click root, because i know the 1 click root doesn't unlock the bootloader.
so first do i have to unlock bootloader, and if i do, can i use the 1 click root with unlocking bootloader? and can i load a rom after i root without unlocking the bootloader?
I also read on a different website that unlocking the bootloader is only required for phones locked to a provider, so does that mean that if i unlock the bootloader, my phone will also be network unlocked?
Just want to get this right so i dont' brick my new phone tomorrow
You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Once rooted, you will need a custom recovery to flash new roms.
Make sure you use a recovery that is compatible with your screen (SLCD requires the newer Amon Ra).
Check out the wiki:

U can use this new SuperOneClick v1.4 (Root, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code):

Better to Unlock bootloader
One click root is an amazing thing. It helps you root your android and install recovery without unlocking bootloader and voiding your warranty. But its better to unlock your bootloader just to be on the safer side. Stock roms flash both the Rom and the recovery. Froyo 2.2.1 even reverts an already rooted device.
Warning: your warranty will be void if you unlock bootloader.

Wrong, the thread's 1st post states what devices it works on and the Nexus is listed...
"It works with almost all phones and all android versions. (including the i9000, Droid, Nexus One)"
Okay but why do we Nexus folks care that the app can get Samsung unlock codes and enable a feature that was never disabled on our phones in the first place?
And why would we prefer a Windows app to an on-device root method?

@danger-rat thanks for the info, i didn't realize that there would be a difference between slcd and amoled, I got the amoled one so i think i'm safe on most recoveries?
@galaxys and inferus- oneclickroot is the best, thats how i got my x10 rooted, but sony's epic fail is forcing me to change over to something more updated, i'm sick of being stuck on 1.6. so no worries about bootloader?
can anyone answer my last question, is my phone locked to tmobile only until i unlocked it? or does it come unlock, and it just a tmobile version because its compatible with tmo 3g?

The Nexus isn't locked to any carrier, but the hardware is specific to different frequencies. For example, I took my T-Mo nexus to the UK earlier this year, switched out the SIM for an Orange one, and everything was great. However, if I use an AT&T SIM, I will only get 2G speeds because AT&T uses a 3G frequency that's not supported by the T-Mo nexus hardware.
Do a wiki search on the carrier you want, and it will list the operating frequencies for their network - just compare with you phone specs for compatibility.

[Q] Unlock code and flashing

Hello All;
I am using my AT&T Captivate on Canadian Rogers network with a seller supplied unlock code, as well as a "sgs unlock.txt" file in my phone.
If I ever do either OTA upgrade to Froyo, custom leak upgrade to Froyo, or any kind of flashing such as stock ODIN and such, will the unlock code ever change or can I be using the same unlock code, if the phone ever decides to lock itself again?
Cheers!

Hmmm....good question. I thought i read somewhere in these threads that when you flash ANYTHING (beyond eclair/ jf6 build), that you do lose the unlock code. I could be wrong. These are one of those times that i wouldn't mind being wrong. lol

Root and carrier unlock are different things. Carrier unlock requires a code from your provider.

Would he need to do a carrier unlock even in the case he installs a new ROM on to it? (even the ODIN One-Click stock ROM?)
Sorry, just curious myself!
What he describes is the fact that in 2.1 ROM, carrier unlock code is very easy to extract from the phone (it is not encrypted). But once you flash to any 2.2 ROMs, the unlock code is now encrypted and much difficult to extract but still doable.
Flash back to 2.1 will not give you back the encrypted unlock code. So, it is important that get get the unlock code while still in 2.1 and write it down somewhere.
There are instuctions posted in dev forum about how to extract the encrypted unlock code in 2.2.
Regardless which ROM you are on, your unlock code stays the same unless you flash to a custom ROM that is not properly ported to Captivate and it will likely destroy your IMEI, product code and unlock code.

Ah I see! So much like the CM7 ROM then
So I'm guessing my phone was already unlocked somehow beforehand...
Call ATT, make up some BS about going to Europe on a trip. Tell them you already bought a prepaid sim card for an international carrier and you need the sim unlock code for your phone.

Custom ROM has nothing to do with unlock status.
Exactly, that's what I'm meaning
I've never unlocked my phone, yet it's unlocked.

How do you know it's unlocked? Are you using it on a different carrier than when you first purchased it? Are you using prepaid SIMs in it? That's what carrier unlocking allows. Rooting allows access to the base OS so you can run certain apps and make mods that involve the system. You can be rooted and locked or unlocked and you can be locked or unlocked and not rooted. One has nothing to do with the other.
I never said they had anything to do with each other, I'm much aware of how they both work. I'm both rooted and unlocked (not bound to any carrier, and yes I use prepaid SIMs).

if your phone has root access simply download galaxy s unlock from the market by helroz and run it. it's pretty simple. to know if you have successfully unlock your phone just dial *#7465625# it should should show network lock off. and you"re good to go any carrier sim you want that supports your phone baseband. if you're not at&t way to go....

[Q] Questions about unlocking and rooting after Samsung 2.2 update

OK first post here. I have done a fair bit of reading and searching but still have a couple of questions. I have just bought a Captivate. Made 3 phone calls with it and that's it. It has already been rooted and unlocked by the seller. I know if I upgrade to 2.2 via KiesMini it will remove the unlock and root. After the update can I unlock and root again. ? I hear Super One Click might root it. I have the code numbers from the original unlocking. What can I use to unlock it? Thanks
you dont lose the unlock by updating it. even if you did, you have the code so it doesnt matter. you dont need it unlocked if you are staying on ATT....unlocking is so you can stick another providers SIM card in and use it on any GSM carrier
I am not on AT&T. I have an AT&T phone that's used on Roger's. That's why it needs to stay unlocked.

Use the SIM you intend to use plus the code previously extracted. [APP]SuperOneClick v1.7 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App works on Froyo.
Update. Unlocked and rooted phone. Updated with Kies Mini to Froyo 2.2. Phone remained unlocked after update. Root was gone. Used SuperOneClick 1.7 and root was back. No problems at all.

Root my S6 Active

Hi if I root my S6 Active will that also unlock it. No I know everyone is going to respond rooting and unlocking are different things but the question is if I root it will it still be network locked. Or does the act of installing new software on the device remove the network lock?

It won't SIM unlock it by rooting it, they're 2 different things. You need the SIM unlock code to use it on a network other than ATT.
Are you sure

Are you sure does that mean that the network lock is hardware on the device and not just software. I mean if I erase all the software and install a new custom ROM if the network lock is software based it should be gone. The reason that I ask is I just got my phone back from samsung for a repair and now I can't unlock it. AT&T and Samsun have no idea why the unlock code doesn't work. So I need to find a way to unlock it without AT&T's help.
Will fix it

Not sure I have ever heard that flashing a new rom would Unlock a phone to any sim before and indeed that would mean just reflashing a full stock rom on samsung devices would unlock them.....
In my opinion you probably talked to someone who had no idea what they was talking about and said what you wanted to hear..
I could be wrong but am sure MANY others will confirm what I have said...
