[Q] Broke Browser - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, I was trying to access videos on SyFy and came across tip to set UAString to "Desktop". I did that, but now when I start the browser I get an error that says "The application Browser (process com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. ........"
Unfortunately the error comes up before the browser opens, so I can't change settings back. Any ideas? A search both XDA and net didn't come up with anything.

Moved to Q&A.

I do not gave a direct answer but you can download a secondary browser from the market. Try dolphin. Atleast you will a browser

Thanks. I'm using Dolphin HD, but I'd like to get phone back. As last resort, will One Click Restore restore the apps too?

Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > click Menu and select Filter by All > Scroll down to Browser and click Clear Data
Keep in mind this will return all your settings to default (including uastring) and also delete all your favorites. BUT, your browser will be back working.

THANK YOU!! Worked like a charm.
Now did thst happen BECAUSE I changed the IAString, or just a tandom data corruption? Snyone know?

Before you search for a new camera app have you cleared out your camera cache and tried the camera again?
Do the following:
Phone menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > All
Scroll to Camera (or whatever the name of the camera app you're using) and click on it
Click on the "Clear cache" button and since you said you haven't done much with it, if you want, click on the "Clear data" though clearing data shouldn't be necessary at this point.
Its tha stock camera app that option was not there
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You mean it was greyed out? All apps will have the same options so it'll be there, just probably not available which is also rather odd, imo. When you look at it in the "All" list, what number do you see under the Camera listing? While you're at it, what number do you see under "Camera Firmware"?
Sent using XDA app on a modified ROM
I cant get to it. I tryed the firm ware up grade and it wouldent do cause it force closes. Idk what to do wish i could find the stock files for it and copy over them and see if that would work...

[Q] How do I disable Google search?

When I open the browser, a Google search page is displayed instead of the specified home page (about:blank). How can I keep the browser from going to Google search?
I'm using the standard browser with Serendipity 6.3.
I get the same results when I use Firefox Mobile 4.0 browser.
From Google home page, go to menu/more/settings/set homepage. Put your desired hompage url in there.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
That's exactly what I did without success. As I posted, the homepage is set to about:blank.
Hmmm...maybe try reset to default and try again?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
No change. I even rebooted. The home screen setting shows about:blank but the browser still goes to Google.
I'm on Serendipity 6.3 too. Just changed my homepage url successfully...but had to close the browser in task manager for the new url to "take." You may have some other issue.

I tried that as well. No joy. Oh well, I'll keep digging. Thanks for your suggestions.

How to set UserAgent on Gingerbread

For all who like the new smooth Gingerbread stock browser but would like to set the User Agent, here are the steps to do so:
1. Open your stock browser
2. Type about:debug in the address bar
3. Press the menu key and tap on Settings
4. The latest option (UAstring) allows you to change your User Agent
5. Disable the "Show Java console" option.
This option is ignored unless about:debug is enabled. So if you see you're getting redirected to the mobile versions of websites you'll just have to retype it again in the address bar.

The settings are not saved after killing the browser or reboot. The only way to make it permanent is to edit the browser apk.

On Gingerbread they are saved. I have reboteed 4 times since editing that option and it never reverted back to default.
No need to edit the apk, so

It doesnt save for me either.
Never has on any device i have used ua string on

If you look in the uastring field it wil show you "desktop" but if you try let say bbc.com the browser will redirect you to the mobile site.

I have this issue too. Even if I change it, it seems like it won't work unless I actually open up settings, and reselect Desktop (even if it is already selected), then reload the site.
It also does not persist through closing/reopening.

I tried this and it works!
Even tried opening bbc.com and it shows the full desktop view on mine.
Thanks!
I'm curious, are you guys using Gingerbread's stock browser now, but were using a different browser when you were in Froyo?
Ok, I got it. The browser does save the setting, but it ignores it unless debug mode is on: try rebooting, go to bbc.com and you'll get the mobile version; type about:debug and reload the page: Full desktop version! So as a temporary workaround it is enough to type about:debug when the browser is opened; I suggest also disabling "show java console" within the settings. In the meanwhile I'll edit the apk so that this option isn't ignored, shouldn't take long once I get to use a pc

Same here.
Does ediing the apk file help?
Anyone found a way to make this permanent yet??
Really love to use the stock browser if only i could have it load desktop uastring by default
Overcome RC1 keeps the UA setting

debug voices are:
show javascript console
single column rendering
use wide viewport
normal rendering
enable tracing
enable light touch
enable navigation cache dump
set JS flags
work like a charm.. thanks!

Unable to set browser homepage

It keeps starting up with google.com even if it's set to another page under setting. I already shut off all location based features (GPS, etc), but not sure if this relates.
Is there any fix on this or it's a common bug?
Set home page then shut down phone, then restart phone, it should load now.

Tried already. Actually, in the settings, it displays the url as the one I set as a homepage, but even that it will still load google.com when the browser is launched.
Everytime when going back to the browser, it will load a new window and go to google.com
Is there a file in the system's directory that can be deleted to clear the cache? Not sure if this is possible if the phone is not root.
Try clearing cache, history, etc. in the browser settings, then remove the battery, install battery and see if that works.

Still no help, already tried the following:
Cleared all cache, set browser to factory setting, removed battery, removed SD card. Rebooted still loading google.com
Any other method besides going for the last step which is a hard reset? If there is a file in the browser's system directory that can be deleted to reset the preferences.
Are you typing in a valid url, if not it goes straight to Google, just a thought.
Download Dolphin Browser from the market, see if it works ok from that browser. It sets your homepage correctly. I had the same problem as you with the stock browser, but my instructions worked fine for me.

I tried firefox, opera mobile, dolphin all started up with google.com (same as the stock browser), even I set it with another "valid" url, they all ignored it.
I guess there is not a choice but a hard reset.
And of course the url is valid, it's a major one, which I have to enter manually each time because the browser ignores it.
Does anyone have an idea if this has to do with the location setting for GPS?

Not sure if this answers your question but anyways you can turn off automatic updating on the apps market page.

Open Market app, hit Menu, select Settings and uncheck the "Auto-update apps" box.
