Another way to root? - Nook Color General

Very noob question so forgive me. I don't have any experience rooting and the instructions seem too much for me. Will there be a "one click" type option to rooting the NC, or is this the only instructions that will get it done? I know there may be people working hard to develop this option so forgive me if that's the case, and thank's for your hard work! I will definitely donate if there's an easier way to root!

There probably will be, you just have to wait for someone to put it together

Awesome! I love my NC but having a droid X I would love another Android beast to take around with me! Can't wait for a quick root option! Great work guys!

The root instructions are not as difficult as they seem.
The easiest way is to burn yourself a Live Linux CD and write the nooter image from there.
After that it's just inserting SD and wait a few mins.

I don't mind waiting if theres going to be a good quick option somewhere down the line. Im a patient person haha

New to the game...

Hello
Sorry if i'm posting in the wrong section. I don't know if this a general inquiry or dream specific. I've been an HTC head for quite some time, the dash being one of my faves until my g1. When I had my dash i was able to get everything I needed component and info wise in order to have a friend help me out with flashing. the thing is being WM obviously the flashing had to be done w a PC.
Me, I'm an Apple head. Is it possible to accomplish any flashing, updating, mods etc for Android/G1 via MAC OS X. Or am I just stuck. I would just like to be able to trick my phone out and experiment with things and not have to find someone who will do it for me. Any responses would be appreciated.
Oh and thanks for all the hard work you guys put in. It definitely makes new technology that more enjoyable.
Thanks
Docfugazi.
If you are just looking to root your phone and flash a new ROM, there's not that much to it. Many tutorials can be found under this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523
If you want to start putting together your own ROMs, more power to you! I would start here (this worked on my MacBook Pro w/Leopard).
Download the Mac OS X version of the android source from here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r3/index.html
Install with these directions (follow these step by step):
http://developer.android.com/sdk/1.5_r3/installing.html
I also chose to install Eclipse (Ganymede version); it works well for me.
This will give you the SDK, a good programming environment, and of course adb.
ahhh. thanks for the response. right now i want to be able flash. If i can accomplish that there's no telling what i'll get into. flirting with this stuff is addictive! thanks soo much!

ATT N1 Best MOD

Hey Guys,
Blast me as I know you will --- I just got my n1 for ATT last week after converting from a BB9700;
Questions -
(1) After rooting what is the best mod to do --- everyone has something to say buy I am debating from Cynagen vs ModaCo..
(2) Radio upgrades, Is there a new n latest one for my verison of N1
!!
Try "Search"......and wrong section to post this...
I was in the same situation as you! Just got rid of my 9700 and got a N1
I've been playing with Cyanogen 5.0.5.3 and more recently, 5.0.6.1-testing with the new .33.2 Undervolted/Overclocked/Extra RAM kernel. Everything is very snappy compared to stock and I couldn't be happier
I'm still looking around for radio roms

I'm going to recommend that you NOT ROOT YOUR N1.
Stick with the un-rooted phone for as long as you can.
First determine WHY you want to root.
Do you know shell scripting? You know much/little about Unix/Linux? Are you a power user? Are you an iPhone iBasher?
I've rooted and unlocked all of my HTC phones for the past few years, because I know what I'm doing. I read and read and read, searched searched searched these forums for reasons why I should or shouldn't do this or that.
You are new to these forums. New to Androidâ„¢.
I say you should play with your new phone for a few months.

If and when you learn ENOUGH by reading, searching, slimming, and searching and reading some more ... if you feel you want to root your Nexus One - by all means, DO It MAN!

I will tell you why 95% of people want to root on the Nexus One. No need to ask a prospect.
The reason is because they want cyanogenmod!
You advice is poor rooting is child play compared to 360 modding.
N1 modding is key to enjoying ones phone.
I have to admit, I rooted my Nexus right away.
Having said that, I spent almost a year on my G1 without rooting it. At first I didn't know it was an option. After I started reading about it, I started to realize that it was probably a wise thing to do. It then took me a few weeks of reading to figure out what I actually wanted to do to my phone before I took the leap and finally rooted it and installed CM which made my G1 experience exciting again.
I mention all this because I agree with OrganizedFellow. Spend some time getting to know how Android works before rooting and adding new features. It will help you appreciate the hard work of the devs even more when you do put custom ROMs on your phone.
If you can't wait, I recommend CM. As for the radio, if your phone doesn't lose 3G and stays connected like it should, don't worry about changing the radio. I "had" to change my radio to try getting rid of my 3G issues that the phone shipped with.

in contrast, if youre not super comfortable with going through the whole process just dip your toes in the water first by trolling forums and reading, you can after all brick your phone. I agree with organizedfellow, take your time and find out why and what benefits. i have not rooted yet but leaning closer as i read more and find that i really need the tethering in case im stuck with no wireless while out on a job (also the different color trackball would be sweet). Out side of those im pretty happy with everything stock, add to it with the rumors of himem coming in a future ota update i think i will be set....just that damn tethering...
You cant go wrong with any ROM available right now, but I highly suggest you try Enomther's ROM as well.

are you serious? nobody said anything about the comparison of rooting an android device (software) to modding an xbox 360 (hardware).
So by your logic, someone should jump right into modding their console because replacing the engine in a Boeing 747 is harder.
To the OP. Take the advice of those suggesting that you wait. For starters, you can see if your device has any hardware issues. Yes HTC is warrantying unlocked devices but why not avoid that hurdle and sit on your device for a week or three to just be sure. While you do that, you can read all that you can stomach in these forums and plan your best course of attack.
Welcome to the fray.

+1 that is some great advice, and I would take it. I was just like you and I last week I rooted my ATT N1. I love it, but I must say that I have put a lot more time into it than I expected. I spent a month before I got the N1 looking into this whole scene and I felt that I had the reasons to root. I would at least spend the time searching forums until all your questions that you have are answered. No body is going to be able to give you a perfect ROM that is for you because there are many different ones out there and what is good for one person may not be the best for another.
I would spend the time to get to know everything before you get going. I would say I know my way around technology pretty well, but if I didn't have the nice folks from this forum I would of had a very hard time with things. When people tell you to "search" they really aren't trying to be rude. To root your phone is a personal choice that only you can make. You are the one that spent the money and people spend a bunch of time making our HTC using lives that much greater.
I spent almost 4 hours last week rooting and unlocking and I have spent easily 30-40 since then learning all that I can learn and I must say that for me it was the right decision because I learned a bunch of things about my phone and now when I have a problem I am comfortable that I can find a way to fix it myself. If I don't then I know where to turn to "search" for help.
If you have any questions I would love to help you out although I am far from a master at this trade. I spent a bunch of time and I have a whole notebook of printouts that I have found in various places all over the web (especially this site) I would be more than happy to send them to you, but just do yourself a huge favor and research, research, research, research, and then when you feel you are done research some more. It will help you in the long run.
Have fun with your phone and good luck
By the way I am running the latest Cyanogen and a few other things. I am having a blast with .apk like the HTC keyboard, and I must say that for me wireless tethering is the greatest thing in the world. I have only touched the very end of this world, and I am so thankful for all the people out there that spend countless hours making our lives a lot easier. I had a bunch of help last week and people really didn't need to spend the time to help me out. I have also messed around with the latest Modaco Sense ROM and I like that a lot as well.

Ok, here I go again. Need someone to pimp my Nexus One/Froyo for me..

I got help here to root it so I could get a proggy on there that would allow me to get fonts in larger sizes and yes, I'm very happy. HOWEVER, my HOT SPOT feature is not working and I"m guessing that pimpin' it is what did it and NO, I'm too stupid to fix it and the guy that helped me rooting it had no idea what to do. I'm close to Charlotte, NC and I was wondering if there's anyone around here that could help me? Ie, rooting it AND getting my hot spot stuff to work which is one of the reasons I bought this one and paid a small fortune for it.
Thanks and yes, I would be glad to pay a lil' sumptin' for it, take you out to lunch or help YOU out in any way.
George
you may be a noob, but seriously you didn't really expect anyone to have sympathy did you?, we all started somewhere.. hint: start by reading the stickies
God forbid someone would have sympathy but NO, the crying icon was there to spruce the thread up.
I have gotten great help in forums and I've run into a lot of a$$holes if that answers your question?
As for reading the stickies, I have a reading comprehension problem so that doesn't work for me. Of course, you may want to say that this is bull$hit
and I'm just trying to make it easy on my self and yes, I am but no, the reading thing is not bull and reading instructions are useless.
Last time, I had someone talk me through it in a chat and it worked but took around TWO hours. This would not have happened if it had been
done through here or e mail. You'd be talking days or weeks just getting the thing rooted.
However, I"m not sure how helpful your reply is? Plenty of that around the web. Lots of replies in help forums but LITTLE help. Mostly people that
think their $hit don't stink and that they can say anything just 'cause they're anonymous. Sounds like my neighbor. She used to talk all kinds of
$hit about EVERYONE and tell me how she stood up to someone and told them this or that to their face but she never did. Just told ME how damn
cool she was but I never saw any proof of it.
Yeah, it's easy to have an opinion online and make comments about any damn thing...
guiri_too,
Post in your local listings (Craigslist, for example). I'm sure there's probably someone in your area that can help you out.
An online forum isn't really the best setting for what you need. You need someone that knows what they're doing (no offense) to look at your phone and do what needs to be done. Otherwise... read through the threads, find rooting/modding instructions, get a custom recovery image on, make a backup, and flash a new ROM.
If you didn't know what you were getting yourself into, you shouldn't have done it. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, either.
If I ONLY stuck to buying things I completely understood, I would NOT have a damn thing today and no worries, I wasn't insulted.
As for craigslist, haven't found much there but morons but I can give it a try.
However, I KNOW there's plenty of knowledge here, the trick is to find it. LIke I said, I got great help rooting it but now I see there's some problem which I ASSUME is from the rooting.
Note, NOTHING against the guy that helped me out, he did a great job and was very patient so I have no complaints, it's just that now that I found this out, I'd like to get it fixed.
Georg
well man, what you can do is give us some details too.. are you on a custom rom, or stock w/only root, also do you have stock recovery or kosh(sp) or Amon Ra's
If you know how to check you can simply go to about phone and check in there if you are on custom, usually in kernal it will have the devs name.. to find you bout recovery you get the app quickboot(in app market) and hit recovery if you have list of options and i mean a list then you have a custom recovery, if you only have 3 options then its stock..
If you got custom rom& recovery, then you can flash a different rom, this could have broken wifi or something along the way.. so what you do is find a custom rom you like( i say go with enomther) that one is close to stock as possible but with all perks taht are really needed
im new to the n1 communtiy as i barely got my n1 rooted, but i had my g1 for over a year or so and had bout 3 of those, and not much has change except the way to root it
Okie dokie Spanky, I'll see if I can figure it out and post back. I was hopin' someone local that's got more brains than I could pimp it but that's what I get for livin' in the boonies I guess

[Q] Is anyone willing to help me Root my HTC Hero? Build # 2.32.651.2

I've looked all over this site, and found a LOT of great write-ups on how to root these phones. However, I haven't found an easy, start to finish, "Rooting For Dummies" type of write up for those of us with virgin, Build #2.32.651.2, Heros.
Is anyone here willing to post up an up to date, step-by-step write up on exactly what I need to do to root my phone? Imagine that I have zero of the required apps and that I have never "rooted/jailbroken" a phone before. I hate the crap apps Sprint put on here, I'd like to save apps to my 16gb SD card vs waste phone space, I'd like to download homebrew apps, etc...I can't do any of those things with this unrooted phone.
Thank you VERY much in advance for your help!!!
Alberto

I saw Regaw's rooter thread before making mine, and for those of you who know what he's talking about, it's probably very easy and well layed out. (he seems to know his stuff! But for me, right from the start I'm lost. Specifically the part that states...
Usage:
Run the "Hero Root.exe" on your computer, then plug in your Hero. It will recognize that you plugged it in, and a big button the reads "ROOT ME" will appear. Press that button and watch as your phone is rooted in under 50 seconds from start to finish.
Where and what is the "Hero Root.exe?" Half of the verbiage used is jibberish to me. I was looking for some simpler step-by-step directions...like ones similar to this write-up... http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/htc-hero-root-guide ... but that write up is old and doesn't seem like it would work for my phone. The write-up seems easy enough to understand.
DL this
And also DL this
Then plug in this
Look for this
Type in this
Hold this button down
etc.
I might be asking for too much. If that's the case, sorry. I'm a mechanical, automotive, finance guy, and sometimes electrical guy. The techy stuff (IT, hacking phones, etc) has unfortunately never been my strong suit.
Regaw provides a link to the HeroRoot.exe software in his OP. I think the link takes you to his website and you choose either 32-bit or 64-bit download.

I got no problems helping a guy out but you may be asking for a cookie bigger than you can eat. Especially after you say your not IT, Tech savvy. If you want to learn we can certainly answer away. But be forewarned this is work. You will at some point not have a working phone for a few minutes or a few hours or a few days. You will read and re-read for hours. You will pull your hair out. You will put your eye out kid.
If you follow the link to Regaw's page at the bottom the link is there for X86 and the other download is for 64bit.
If you cannot gather stuff from the links I have provided, I don't think you should really worry about rooting or installing a ROM. I think you are better off with what you have right now. Take this as friendly advice, not sarcastic.

I 2nd this.
I think maybe my original issue was that I was on a work PC that is VERY restricted in the way of what internet material we're able to see. I originally didn't see links and info.
Working on this now...
"Connected - not a CDMA Hero"
Go find the z4root program. Takes less than a minute to root your Hero. Then you will need a recovery image and you should he all set.
That or super one click. Both are easy and quick.

I've taken every suggestion in this thread, DLed every single suggested file, followed every single link and all following links, and have found nothing but broken links, crappy non-working files, and have only managed waste a bunch of my time to take up more space on my laptop. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
What an incredible pain in the ass.

what I did a long time ago(back in Dec 2010 ) was pull my microsd card out place in a reader put copies of the files on the root of the card aka [bold]/sd [/bold](unrevoked forever, the rom, cwm and gapps..) I was likely to be flashing(or launching) with clockworkmod recovery ..cwm ( now using ra 1.7 as it has been more forgiving to me on flashing) did a few NAND backups using cwm after doing unrevoked then restoring said NAND backups to make sure when I did flash the custom rom that if it borks/I bork that I can do a recovery back to stock(while still under stock you should download and install a file explorer and ,my personal fav, root explorer to be able to see files on your sd card). Pretty much any way to screw it up I've believe I've done it or at least came close to it. I have read of the heroc thread of aosp's gbcm from page 1 up to 1050ish and still a noob. But one thing I'll say is always do a backup( ran 3-10 for awhile as couldn't get any newer to install thru cwm 3xxx or it would do a bootloop/fc on setup, etc.).
So you.downloaded and ran z4root and it didn't work?

My 2 cents is that you probably don't need to be rooting. But if you must, read up on RUU.
There's too many chances to accidentally delete the wrong thing with root. Eventually you'll be doing an RUU.

Yes my friend, it is a pain in the ass and could potentially waste a lot of your time. Forums exist today solely to help 2 groups of people. There are some really nice folks here that will help you too but you have to put in the time, no getting around that.

Dude - I'll say it AGAIN, you should seriously reconsider rooting/flashing, if you could not get it done inspite of claiming to have read the information, something's not right.
When I rooted my phone, I just followed the stuff that was on the wiki, it was smooth sailing. I think, with all the information and super devs on this (Hero CDMA) forums, Hero is the easiest to root and handle.

[Q] Finally decided to root my note 3

Long time xda fan, first time poster. So, I have a bone stock AT&T Galaxy Note 3 N900AUCUEOC1 running lollipop 5.0. For about a year now I've been contemplating rooting it but I'm worried I'm gonna jack my phone up. Besides replacing my lcd screen I haven't done really too much with it. This will be my first attempt at rooting any phone and I wanted to ask a few questions to get some clarification and direction.
First, what currently is the easiest way to root a droid for someone that doesn't speak a lick of tech?
I've read 10 different ways but if anyone would know, its you guys. Does Kingo work with what I have?
What do I need to do prior to root? I.e, what do I need to download?
Also, could you recommend a decent ROM? Whats a good backup app that will actually work?
Lastly, I have a game ive been playing for a couple years and I dont sign in, it recognizes my phone or something, its on my sd card but will i lose it when I wipe my phone? Thanks in advance for your time.
Cassidy
I would never discourage some one from rooting their phone, however, you have chosen a hard place to start. You need to become familiar with odin, and /or safetrap. There are great instructions already posted, but unless you have a working knowledge of Odin, you are going to cause yourself a great deal of headache.
I suggest finding a friend who has done it, and have them walk you through it the first time.
By the way, I have been rooting Android phone since the original Motorola Droid. And I have this one rooted. But I not so easy for people new to the process.
Any way you go, I hope it works great for you!

Thanks for the concern. I used to be pretty smart. Ive watched and read a ton about odin and I guess people just make it look super easy. I've noticed theres a different variation for every model of droid so I gjust need to find the right one and figure out what to do before and after the video stopped. Im just hoping I can find some help here. Thanks again

Best I seen about Odin with a video http://www.samsungodindownload.com/odin-tutorial/ and this is the Odin I use http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3109599&d=1420980613 Once you think you're ready http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/help/att-note-3-lollipop-t3100657 and post #4 has all the links you need. You are Lollipop so you WILL need to do all four files (first picture shows, if you try the All-In-One you will have problems). I'm on here everyday so if you need any help post here or send a message. I don't mind helping and NO, you do not have to donate to me.
Thanks a bunch Rooted! Thats gonna simplify thing a bunch, I really hope. Im sure id be bricked right now if my girl didnt catch me getting ready to do it and beat me up, she bought it for me on my bday. Needless to say she didnt approve. Ha. Ill wait till tomorrow i think. But I appreciate your help, you're a good man.
