[Q] Galaxy S warning camera failed message only for one camera? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, got a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 16gb, running RyanZA's OCLF on 2.2 froyo. took a look at the similar threads, couldnt find anything which worked, or a problem similar to mine. Getting a problem with the camera, when i open the app, the camera shows me the image, unlike others with the green or black screen issue, but when i click capture it says warning: camera failed. Now i tried switching to the camera on the front of the phone to see if i got the same issue, which to my surprise i didnt, and i am able to use this one and take pictures, but not with the camera on the back.
I don't have Fringe installed, or google goggles, tried uninstalling skype but that didnt help.. Any ideas? Also have Whatsapp, but dont think this could be causing the problems?

interesting.. My camera application shows 0.00B, but yet it still works as it takes videos

took it back to Vodafone, the guy took a look at it and said I needed a new camera installed, he ordered the part and should be getting fixed on Friday. Fairly sure this isnt a hardware problem, but hey if it gets fixed under warranty.. I'm happy

FOUND A FIX:
UNDO OCLF lag fix, apply the voodoo lagfix, available in a handy little app from the android market. This reformats the EXT2 into an EXT4 partition, and somehow, for some reason, it fixed my phone. Which is AWESOME!
apply voodoo lagfix, makes the phone way faster and camera capabilities are fully restored

voodoo fix helped my friend solve the problem, thanks!

so I got # warning camera failed message on a 1 week old SGS
in the meanwhile I did some research and
find some Camera.apk and Camera Firmware.apk but can NOT install them
How pretty please

Hi Guys,
I am also facing the same problem. The last date i took the picture was on 01-March and i tried today but got the message "Warning: camera failed". As soon as i launch the camera, i can see the images in the camera but when i click to take the picture, i am getting the warning message. same issue is with video recording as well. but the front camera works fine.
Last week, i rooted my phone using "CF-Root-JPH-v1.1" and i believe the problem has started from there. Below are my phone details.
Baseband version: I9000XXJPP

Build number: FROYO.XWJPH
PDA: I9000XWJPH

I am sure this is not hardware issue since other Apps which uses camera works fine. can somebody help me to fix the camera issue. Is there anyway i can un-root?

Not meaning to pile on CF-Root, but I also applied CF-Root-JPH-v1.1 a few days ago and now see the same issues. Camera is 0b and Camera firmware is 0b. The only thing I have to add is I have been trying to flash clockwork recovery mod unsuccessfully.

Gallery Blurry. (Have nandroid back from Froyo) Any help?

Hi all.
Right ive got Nexus-One obviously. Have always used Cyanogen mods ever since around 2 days after i got the device. Amon Recovery 1.7.0.1, CM 5.0.7.1 too.
I flashed a Froyo ROM, cant remember which think it was it however updated my radio.... I decided i didnt like Froyo so much atm to reverted to a Nandroid backup.
After this videos didnt play.
I backflashed a different radio on, videos are perfect no never a problem.
Pictures however are blurry, SOME are perfect majority are blurry. Now its really annoying me and i dont want to wipe the whole device and start from scratch.
Anyway to solve this?
Radios ive used:
update-nexusone-radio-32.24.00.22U_4.03.00.21_2-signed
update-nexusone-radio-32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2-signed
TheOfficial_Nexus1_Radio_Update_4.03.00.21_2
Radio_20100203_2_Signed_PASSION
Any support would be great as its starting to really annoy me now!
Thanks,
Kyle.
Is it blurry because the picture hasn't fully loaded from the sd card and is still showing a preview? I know sometimes it can take a while on mine if there are a lot of pictures.

No mate, its just blurry. There fine on computer.
Infact open camera, and click in the corner where it shows you the last photo taken, they all display perfect here. Its just Gallery or the Radio i think that maybe the problem.
Think ive flashed from 5.0.6 to 5.0.7.1 at some point too.
Not tried the google apps package though.
There was alot of discussion about this over in the Cyanogen Mod main thread.. not sure if this is an exact fit but here is how I fixed my issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6604272&postcount=9197
Cleared all cache, same. Cleared dalvik-cache too.
Have tried the crop trick this didnt work. Think im just going to put up with it till CM6!

[Q] video / audio out of sync

Has anyone else noticed that audio and video aren't in sync? Or is it just my phone?! Literally, in every video i play audio is a fraction of a second out of sync when compared to video. Tried with 720p, brrips 720p, dvdrips, and even ordinary hdtvrips, and it happens in every single one of them. Also happens when playing games. Is there a fix?
experiencing the same problem
Yes I have the same problem like you. They aren;t synced on froyo, but in eclair was everything ok. Any solutions?
So far, i haven't found a solution... It really sucks, can't watch anything.
Same with mine. All Video worked perfectly with Eclair. Now with Froyo almost every video I play the Audio goes out of sync. You can actually hear the audio is slowing down and the voices sound stretched.
Also found no sollution yet. Must be a bug with this release of the firmware.
Very frustrating!
BTW this is what I have:
Firmware Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: I9000XXJPP
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9 ([email protected] #1)
Build Number: FROYO.XFJP7
Here is what I recorded with my phone:

Low quality setting to verify that the hardware can cope with the video acceleration. Still this problem occurs.
this is s%$$%^
same problem. could any pros here plz enlighten us?? i loved watching movies on my sgs...now...sigh T_T
Having the same issue on my Samsung Galaxy 3 (Eclair: I5801DDJG6).
Tried various encoding tools but no success...
Still looking for a solution.
Still nothing? I have same problem on my Galaxy 3 i5800... There has to be a solution...
Anyone found a solution to this ?
Seriously planning to sell my brand new galaxy s now.
Its unbearable.
I have the same issue. At first I thought it was just avi files, but then I realized that it was a problem with all video, including youtube. Really wish there was a fix...
really interesting!
I just tried myself and there is a lag (out of sync).
it could be:
1) A codec issue (depending on wich rom???)
2) A sound treatment issue (maybe something like vodoo sound???)
3) Kernel?
4) Rom?
Let's investigate a bit more, would you mind to give full detail?
Mine:
Doc's Kitchen JS5 9.6.6 - speedmod K13C
2.2.1
I9000XXJPY
2.6.32.9 [email protected]
I don't believe the rom or kernel matters. I have this issue sine day one. And I've used many roms and kernels and I still have the delay.
Samsung engineers are stupid to say the least if they haven't noticed it themselves. And Samsung is stupid to release this phone with this bug.

To do a fix you need to get some informations to target the problem, the more data/background you give, the faster it'll probably be fixed.
Is this affecting all the camera software found from the market or just the stock camcorder?
This is really annoying. Last night I was filming a a live performance by a band and the music is noticeably out-of-sync. This was not the case with Eclair
Anyone asked if SuperCurio can help with this?

I asked supercutio about this but he didn't have time to think it over. He is busy with nexus kernel.
I didn't find any camcorder app in the market so I don't know if its a stock app issue.
I'm sure it's Froyo's fault and not a hardware issue but I doubt Samsung or Google will ever address this annoying bug.

I have the firmware related sync issue which was not present in Eclair. This makes.me really sad as I'm on my way to visit India and would love to take some HD videos there. Now I don't have the time to go back to Eclair to fix this issue so is there anything I can do after the trip to fix thesync? For example, if the sound is constantly lagging 200ms I could easily fix it but if the lag is varying in time I don't think there's much I can do. Anyone know better?

I had this problem after installing Gingerbread (JVK), and think I did an accidental workaround. Started up my phone without external sd and SIM after a failed attempt at 3 button combo to get in recovery mode (it works for me but it's so damn hard sometimes) but then I happened to start the camera app, and it worked again! It reset the app to store the photos on my phone so maybe there was some problem with the app reading the external sd. Now it works fine again even storing the photos on the external sd. It also solved a problem I had playing the videos I made with the phone, previously the screen stayed black during playback.
I hope this works for you too.

[Q] Problem with Gingerbread compass

finally got around to updating to GB (after Kies problems). Everything looked ok until I tried the compass.
Nothing seems to be working!
Tried several compass / GPS apps including Google Sky Map but the direction doesn't change with the orientation of the phone.
Anyone else come across this?
I have, I assume, the same problem as you.
I upgraded to 2.3.3 and now the compass doesn't work at all. For one thing, in Google Maps, if I hit the compass button the compass actually flips 180 degrees and points south instead of north. If I rotate the phone the compass rotates with it. In other words it doesn't track North at all. It just stays pointing in the same direction and turns with the phone, like it was stuck. I've tried every compass app I can find and have calibrated it over and over and still the same issue.
One thing I did find was if you type in *#0*# on the phone keypad you will open up a diagnostic screen. Tap the sensor button and you can see the magnetic sensor isn't reading north properly. But if you tap the magnetic button and then run the test is passes fine.
From what I've found browsing the web, it seems to be a common problem with Gingerbread 2.3.3 on HTC phones. So I'm assuming that it's the same problems that's affecting us on the Galaxy S (GT-I9000). And AFAIK, it's a known bug and has been reported to Google.
It's annoying for me, but not in the way that it will effect me in my day to day usage of the phone. I don't need the compass to work as I use Google Maps and GPS to navigate, not the compass. But of course I want it fixed because I do sometimes need to use the compass for other things. And of course because my phone has that feature and I paid for it so make it work FFS!
Anyway, hope there is a fix for it soon and Samsung doesn't take forever to release the update, like it did for Gingerbread. Of course, if someone come up with a fix that you need to be rooted for then I will take the plunge and root my phone. The only reason I haven't done it yet is that I can't find a simple and clear way of doing it on 2.3.3. Every guide I've read seems to be for Froyo and not Gingerbread. And when I downloaded "SuperOneClick" my Comodo Anti-Virus went nuts about a Linux exploit file in it. And although I don't think it was something that could be a danger to my Win 7 box, I cleared it just to be safe.
So, a long reply to basically say, "Me Too!!!11!!11!"

2. Diagnostic Menu, select "Magnetic"
3. Pressing "Start Test" in the Magnetic Sensor Test Menu, somehow reset the calibration.
4. Go back to Diagnostic Menu, select "Sensor"
5. All the sensor values will be shown, look at the black dial with a red need. If "1 need calibration" is shown just rotate the unit a few times..... then "2 need calibration" when just "3" is indicated .........calibration done. Make sure there no power lines and metal structures are not nearby.

[Q] camera issues

I've tried browsing the forums, and even locating the post talking about the fix for the camera, and I simply can't find it. I really don't want to go without a phone seeing as my job requires my phone, but it really sucks not having a camera or a flashlight toggle.
I've seen some people that have indicated its a physical issue, however, it sporadically starts working again. Note: I would like to avoid doing the super data wipe as I'm also having computer issues at the same time. If someone needs me to post a catalog, I will need help Learning what to filter out in order to upload only the necessary info.
I've tried wiping the data through twrp advanced wipe, and of course the dalvik cache has been wiped many-a-time. Any help would be appreciated!
Um...I don't think you even explain you problem. Might want to elaborate a bit.

No matter what ROM I use, no matter what camera I try to install, I cannot get it to consistently work. More often than not, cannot connect to camera. I feel like its a setting or file sticking on the "SD card" that is interfering. I also cannot use the flashlight toggle, and parts of Google+ and gallery crash at times. This has been intermittently occurring since my first flash. Blissful ROM v1.7 twrp 2.8.4.0
Tried every wipe except for the one that makes me type yes. I've already flashed boot.IMG to disable decryption, and I'm starting to think that may have something to do with it.
I was under the impression I had twrp 2.8.4.0, but after double checking, it looks like it was stuck on 2.8.2.1. I flashed the newer version from twrp manager, and now my camera is working. I didn't do anything other than install the new recovery. And yes I've tried rebooting my phone in the past. This may be a temporary fix, but I'll report back tomorrow on whether it is still working. This is very odd.
Andddddddd it stopped working again. Super legit.
Might be similar to my issue.
My camera started only showing front facing..even the option for back facing wasn't there. Did wipes in recovery and app settings. Would work, it seemed, but would revert right back to not working. At one point the camera app wasn't appearing in the app drawer at all even though it was shown in "all apps".
This occurred on stock and custom ROMs. I was advised to try flashing factory IMG but I'm well within the warranty period ( phone less than 2weeks) so I'm locking it back up and have a replacement on the way from ATT...
* I also noticed the issue starting while I was on bliss ROM 1.7
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
My camera is really shaky and won't focus correctly in landscape mode. I returned the first phone I had for basically the same thing because it wasn't focusing in portrait mode but looked fine in landscape. I haven't seen anyone else have this issue. At first I thought the camera was inconsistent but if you zoom in you can see that it doesn't focus properly.
I'm starting to wonder why there are so many people experiencing the same or similar camera issues. The only reason I'm starting to think that it is software based and not entirely hardware based is because I was having this same issue (cannot connect to camera) on my sgs5 with cm based Roms.
I'm not saying any of this makes sense, its just strange. I wish we could help troubleshoot what the root of this problem is instead of just RMAing the device. I'm afraid to RMA with T-Mobile.
you better do it before its too late. id rma it.

Similar issue. Get errors "Unfortunately, camera has stopped" or "cannot connect to camera." I picked up the phone right before a 2 week vacation so unfortunately I can't bring back to AT&T. Hopefully Moto plays nice. Problems originally occurred on stock 5.0 before the 5.0.1 update. Since AT&T was lagging on OTA, I flashed to the official BlissPop rom but I have the same problems. Sometimes it'll work like it's supposed to for a couple days but always reverts back to the errors. Nothing like being at the top of a mountain in Hawaii and "cannot connect to camera" right????Since I've read about this happening on so many different firmware variations, I have to believe it's a hardware issue.
I have only had issues with the stock camera app. Ive been running Pure Shamu for 2.5 weeks now and only using the Google Camera app from the play store (the one with HDR+ and the icon has the lens filled with rainbow colors) with absolutely no issues and only getting excellent quality pictures.
Had the issue where the camera wouldn't focus and everything on the screen gets jiggly and wavy like there's some sort of interference. I had motion sickness looking at the screen. Called Moto for an advance replacement and after a week of delay due to stock issue...somehow they were kind enough to upgrade me to a CW 64gb model. I hope it's new and no more camera issues.
Has everyone who got the 'no-focuse OIS' issue gotten new phone on RMA?
I took mine to repair few days ago and they said that they won't give me a new phone instantly, rather they try to fix the OIS. Not sure how that is going to work..?
They also suggested that this issue might be "self inflicted" or just an "feature" of the camera itself. fml.

I returned mine to stock, unroot/locked boot loader, factory reset, before shipping it off and the camera issue was still there. Maybe hardware related I'm thinking.

Something rather peculiar Ive noticed...
I didn't really pinpoint this until today, but the camera very consistently starts working when you go into fastboot, load the recovery, and then boot into system. I'm really, sincerely not quite sure why this would be happening, but I still feel like it has something to do with boot.IMG
If any devs can point me in the right direction to try and track down the possibility of this being an issue, I'd love to potentially fix a bunch of people's camera issues (albeit there is probably also a hardware defect direct from moto).
Is logcat going to pick up on issues that originate from boot?

I've seen some people that have indicated its a physical issue, however, it sporadically starts working again. Note: I would like to avoid doing the super data wipe as I'm also having computer issues at the same time. If someone needs me to post a catalog, I will need help Learning what to filter out in order to upload only the necessary info.
I've tried wiping the data through twrp advanced wipe, and of course the dalvik cache has been wiped many-a-time. Any help would be appreciated!

Not the issue I'm explaining though. This is a bit more deeply seeded of an issue. When I boot directly into the ROM, my twrp installer says I'm back on 2.8.2.1, but when I boot into fastboot and then twrp, and then ROM, it says 2.8.4.0 and my camera works. This is legitimately weird as ****.

It appears a bit more stable now. I tried flashing twrp from my computer and it seems to be a bit more nice. That and normal reboot to twrp doesn't say 2.8.2.1 - let me check twrp manager now.
And my camera and flashlight have worked for almost three days now. Dafuq.
Same issue. "Unfortunately, Camera has stopped."
No flash light available, only front camera working, clicking on HDR exits the app with the aforementioned error message.
Has anyone solved this issue?
I was on 5.1 stock (with root) and now I've updated to 5.1.1, but with no change to the Camera behaviour.
