Guys,
I'm using Froyo 2.2 on my G1 for 2 days, but seems a little problem there. Responses are a little bit slower than before (when used 1.6). The rotating home screen is a little bit slower to response.
1. What should I do except downgrade it to Eclair 2.1?
2. Is there any complete guide to do it?
Thank you very much for any suggestions
Try Sparksco's v1.5 Froyo Rom. Its extremely fast! Works great for me.
I'm curious too as i'm not too fond of the battery usage i'm getting from froyo at the moment.

What Froyo rom did you try? Some are faster than others. 1.6 was specifically designed for the G1, it's unreasonable to expect any rom to run as fast as that. 2.2.1 is a Froyo update designed for the MyTouch, it's still a little slower than 1.6, but it's faster than the other Froyo's.

Yeah, you can't expect newer versions of android to run as well on old hardware. The g1 wasn't designed for anything above donut. It can barely handle froyo, its almost too big for the g1. 1.6 is going to be way more responsive, but the issue there is that you are running old software, and in turn some apps won't work, among other downsides, such as not as much support. So its a choice, slightly less responsive but more features and more up to date software that all apps work on and is supported and such, or an out of date rom, not as supported, with less newer apps, but way more responsive and smooth.
Personally I got used to the less response in favor of auto updated market apps and newer gapps, etc.

Are you running a cyanogenmod-6 based ROM? Something probably just got corrupted. I would back up your apps, do a nandroid backup, and reflash the ROM you're using. Titanium is an amazing tool for seamless backing up and restoring of user apps with their data and market links. If that doesn't work, post back, but I doubt that it won't work.
Its written on my G1...mod version: CyanogenMod-6.0.0-DS-RC1 , build number: FRF91

Download the top link, it's 6.1.0 stable. It's the latest cm6, flash it and see if it fixes your issue
You ARE on a release candidate, there's been two stable roms since, a stable ROM will probably fix it.

32B Magic and Dream use identical RAM and I believe the same CPU (slightly different variant AFAIK, but same ARM version and clock speed). Either way it makes no difference.
Also I accidentally gave you thanks because I'm used to having 'Quote' on the far left :-S

I just installed Cyanogen's stable rom 4.0.4 before Google issued the cease and desist order. I am not sure how long it is going to take Cyanogen to issue a new rom that is acceptable to Google.
So, I am at a crossroads now that the official stock Donut is being pushed out by TMobile.
Is the stable version of Cyanogen 4.0.4 mostly like the official Donut rom, or are the quit a bit more features? I have also thought about upgrading to 4.1.11 but don't want to have a buggy handset. I am interested in know what others are planning while we are in custom-mod "limbo".
Thanks.
4.1.11.1 is very usable. Good luck finding a link to it, though.
i used cm updater to get 4.1.11.1 today because i couldn't find a dl link
also had the same question.... what is everyone doing?
(A) stick with stable
(B) try 4.1.11.1 (what issues? Is it Donut?)
(C) go stock
(D) Try another ROM (insert my shock face) that has Donut

on one of my phones i have 4.1.11.1 with my theme, the new lockscreen, and the 10mb ram hack. (my main phone) on my other phone i have akirah 1.6 with my theme. akirah 1.6 runs amazingly smooth, i just like the new lockscreen too much to give it up.
imo both roms are smooth, i have not noticed anything out of the ordinary using 4.1.11.1 (if anyone needs a link to it ) also if they have removed akirah 1.6 again.
i think akirah 1.6 is a little faster and smoother than 4.1.11.1, but 4.1.11.1 has a lot more features that i like more, so i will stick with 4.1.11.1 for now for daily usage.
Im sticking with 4.1.11.1.... This ROM is fast. The only thing I had to do was set up partitions on my sd. For some reason I was getting alot of fc's. I had 4.04 and it was also nice but no bfs. 4.04 doesnt have the new market but your not missing anything special.... NEW COLORS YEAAAAH! There are alot more themes for 4.04 but the guys on the dream side are mking quite a few for 4.1.11.1.
As for stock ROMs Cyanogens are far more advanced and quicker. Im so happy i dont have to look at the Myfavs icon anymore! Now if I could only do something about the Amazon icon!

oh wait you have a magic don't you (didn't think about that until after i typed it), just use a file browser with root capabilities to delete it out of /system/app or type adb shell then do those commands. (with adb shell it doesn't have to be in recovery)

David I was wondering if you maybe have the links to CYANOGEN 4.0.4 been lookin for it all over the web found broken links all over...Thanks!! wil really appreciate it!
You should be able to get 4.04 and 4.1.11.1 both from the CM updater still.
I myself was also in the same situation as the OP. I installed cyanogen 4.04 like maybe 4 days before the C&D letter and now donut is released. Imagine that.
My question is, I've read that donut has improved performance, and battery life.
Is it faster and better on the battery front than the cyanogen 4.04 rom i have currently?
i'm just gonna wait for the 'suprise' cyanogen has for us this weekend (from twitter)

CyanogenMOD has Apps2SD which IF you have a class 6 microSDHC will be faster and have ALOT more space for apps. As a root user, you can overclock the underclocked stock G1 (stock cpu is 384MHz, root cpu overclock can be 528MHz) which makes it faster also. As far as battery life, you will save battery with stock 1.6 .
Just my 2 cents but I might be wrong.

thanks for the advice. Yeah i'm looking at maybe overclocking my G1, I might take a hit on battery but from what I've read, I can live with the trade off.
Which app would you recommend to overclock?
I keep hearing about overclocker, and setcpu. I heard that overclocker the settings reset with every restart so right now i'm leaving toward setcpu. What's your take?
I wonder what's the surprise cyanogen has this weekend.

before cyanogen implemented cpu scaling into his builds, i used overclocker, then i used overclock once it came out, i would go with overclock widget or setcpu since both of those have good options.

Hey guys,
Could anyone suggest to me the fastest, most stable ROM for my G1 that doesn't run into any issues (especially from everyday use).
I've used plenty of them, mainly sourcing off Cyanogen but I seem to always get some delays especially with my phone, so many people have told me they tried ringing me but went straight to voicemail and my phone has no missed calls or anything, just sitting idle and this is a major pain.
I'm currently on the original version waiting to upgrade, is there an official Cupcake version I can download? My calls coming in quickly are more important than themes right now.
Thanks!
Im using CSDIv1....its a FAST rom. I dont have Swap enable(Sucks battery) nor 10MB Ramhack(Like my 3D apps), and still its a really fast rom.
There is only one problem with it, and its that the Keyboard is on Spanish. But you can change it just pushing a folder to the system, and voila. If you need some asistance, just ask.
I suggest the latest MghtyMax ROM. Is the fastest and stable Hero ROM I've tested.
super d 1.8...i made the switch from Cyanogen a few weeks ago and its been 100% worth it. Super D's rom is lighting fast I promise and i had a problem with missed texts on CM's rom and have not had that problem since i switched.

I keep hearing this, and as soon as my class 6 micro comes in, I think Im gonna have to try it.
Its hard to believe, as I just flashed cyanogen 4.2.14.1 ands its freakin fast. Hard to believe theres a faster one.
Guess I ll have to give it a shot. Has anyone actually tried cyanogens newest and compared it to super d 1.8? Is it really THAT much faster?

Thanks for your help man.
For everyday use you want Cyanogen.
For Speed get either FastTest or SuperD. They're basically the same thing.
Hope this helps.
I suggest DarkStar theme for Cyanogen and SuperD
I use king's 2.3 hero rom, I only use hero roms anyway though, best normal rom I've tried, however is super d. although, cyanogen is very "noob friendly"

Hmm..Im curious why you say that. What makes Cyanogen more "everyday useable"? What would you actually say are the biggest differences in the 2 roms?
Really they're all apples, just different flavours. From what I've read, they all have the same bits and bites from Eclair; cyanogen's modded code (right?). I personally pick CM over everything else because the community support for CM is a larger, more discussion. Of course, this doesn't mean the other ones are inferior. You should try them all for like a day or two. Wipe before you try a new one, so you can tell which one really works best.
2.1 Roms on the other hand I think need more work. Not all the drivers work yet. I tried OpenEclair and I felt a bit handicap compared to the 1.6 Roms. Also, for me at least, it didn't feel as fast as the 1.6 Roms. Good roms but need more work.
I was running Cyonogen for some time and I was pleased but I love to experiment. For the last 2 weeks I've been testing the 2.1 ASOP roms out from King(1.5) and Enclair (1.15). Both are great builds but I prefer the customization in enclair more and both are fairly stable. I was having the issue of texts getting deleted and the Rom's just seemed like they were not as quick as I wanted them to be. I enjoyed the new layout but I was finally just frustrated with overall performance and I keep reading about the Super D build. I wiped my phone and threw it on few hours ago and WOW! It is blazing fast and very stable from what I can see so far. I've tried some apps out that were proving difficult before and just wow I am amazed. This build may be on the 1.6 based side but I am glad to have performance back over some "prettyness". I may try the 2.1 builds again but I will wait for all of the kinks to work out. So my opinion is hands down Super D ( I believe it was 1.8 v) is the best build available right when looking at overall performance and stability. I love it! Made my day!
*on a side note*
I could never get Youtube to install and work with the enclair ASOP 2.1 builds, it was very frustrating as you cannot download the app from the app store and issues installing manually via the APK.
I found AmonRa 1.6.3 to be the fastest and stable ROM, in my opinion

I want speed, stabilitiy and normal functionality for the phone for my girlfriend. It looks like the Cyanogen is the safest bet... am I right to infer that 2.0/2.1 ROMs aren't quite up to snuff yet?

In my experience, 1.6 will always be snappier then 2.0/2.1 builds; at least for now. Our G1s don't exactly have a huge amount of space to store bigger ROMs. Really having 2.1 isn't necessary but it does have some nice features that 1.6 doesn't have. Like ability to have multiple google accounts and facebook sync. I can't really think of anything else of the top of my head but I'm sure there are at least a few others.
One thing people haven't gotten to work on 2.1 ROMs for G1, is the video camera. Camera works though on most 2.1 ROMs now (all?). The new contacts display for 2.1 is nice but even laggier then the one used in 1.6 ROMs. Can't think of anything else, someone help!
Basically, 2.1 has a lot more STUFF in general. Whether you need this extra stuff is up to you, because STUFF needs more RAM stuff, and G1 is low in that department.
My opinion:
MghtyMax 1.9.1 is veeeery fast!!! (with Swap, SetCpu and all that stuff, of course)
I like any of the Roms from King's collection and I like Super-D verry much too. Cyanogen's rom has a larger community cause that's normally what people hear when learning about rooting and stuff. I only used Cyan when I compared Enom to Cyan and Enom's was faster and everything was great.Super-D is faster than Cyan but seems slower than Enom's, Cyan has the eclair stuff just like Super-D. But I think its up to what you like you cant let others decide cause their perception of speed is diff from yours.

I just actually read about that rom, and it seems good. What makes me wonder though, is that some people say its faster than Super D. How could it actually be faster, as this rom is more or less just Super D with a theme installed? Surely, having the theme installed would decrease performance buy a little bit, vs increase it.
But what do I know
Edit: Ok, Im stupid. as Fast Test doesnt have the Eclaire stuff, thats where a performance increase would come. **slams head on keyboard**
Super D, hands down. No rom even comes close.
And Fast Test 2.3 IS Super D, just with a theme, so unless you want that specific theme, there's no point in getting Fast Test, when Super D is available.

Sorry, but the G1 just isn't designed to run anything above 1.6. The developers here have done an amazing job to make the 2.0 experience as great as possible on the G1's limited hardware, but speed and loadings time, though not apparent at first, will definitely become an issue.
I have used everything from JesusFreke 1.41 through SuperE and FroYo, and I have to say that so far that the best ROM is SuperD, a 1.6 Rom by Ben Buchacher.
However, with the nice recovery images around lately, it is pretty easy to try out different ROMs, so I say just give 1.6 and 2.2 both a try, and see what you like and see if the speed trade off is worth the many more features presented in 2.2.
Thanks for the advice peeps, i've installed FroyoRedux Mod v1.2 and so far so good. Much faster than i'd expect... and dear i say faster than donut??
Hi guys,
I've flashed CM6.1 ROM (Froyo 2.2) to my Milestone a few weeks ago - and was enjoying it till one day I accidentaly hard reset and noticed that I have also removed the default launcher from ROM. So I had black screen and nothing appears after the phone was booted.
Well I could just have copied a launcher over from the PC, but I decided to restore my Nandroid backup.
To my surprise, the backup was the stock 2.1 Eclair ROM. So I was frustrated a bit to lose Froyo.
But after using Eclair 2.1 for a week or so, I have never enjoyed using the Milestone as much as this. It's fast and responsive, better than when I had Froyo.
I wanted to ask - is it true that Eclair 2.1 IS faster than Froyo, or did I flashed a slow Froyo ROM? In terms of memory management is great too. I can open more apps and keep them running than I can remember with my Froyo. With Froyo, I've encountered like foreground app close, and changing from one app to another will eventually killed the last app and had to load it back.
Or can someone recommend a very fast and good memory management of Froyo ROM for my milestone? Or it's really - Ok let's cut the crap and go straight to the point - Eclair that's leading in this race (and I've won?). Edit : The Eclair won!
I do miss the Flash 10 on Froyo... sigh, if only I can get it on Eclair still.
Thanks.
-
Update: Well it's not a true-not-true anymore but it is TRUE that Eclair does run much faster than Froyo or Gingerbread. I'm using Telus 5.2 Eclair and I just can't believe the speed that I'm getting (it's like Milestone on steroid!). See my post on 2nd page. And no I'm not with Telus or related or what, but I highly recommend this ROM to Eclair users out there. This is definitely a keeper! I've also covered about the battery life and tempreture on the post on 2nd page. Have a read, and don't hesitate to flash Telus, you will never regret it. Now I am more hesitate to flash over to Froyo or Gingerbread even more after using it! Hey, I feel like I can outbeat a Tegra even
-
Update: First of all I'm renaming this thread from "Milestone 2.1 Eclair faster than 2.2 Froyo" to "Discussion - Fastest 2.1 ROM for Milestone".
I saw some users asking about where this Telus 5.2 Eclair is.. so I'm providing the link here > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717377.
No I am not associated with the dev who made that ROM or whatsoever, and I am not duplicating the thread. Merely suggesting the fastest 2.1 ROM available (currently), for those who are not the 'wait and obey' users of Milestone, but to the 'commander' users of this device. Continuous discussions about which is the fastest 2.1 ROMs are still welcomed here, and of course, any ROM comparison discussions with other various versions (eg. 1.6, 2.2, 2.3, 3.0??) should head over here >http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029887
I haven't used Eclair in a long time but I remember how clad i was when I flashed a custom ROM for a first time (some Cm7 nightly) and on my case my milestone felt blazing fast even with bad memory management and I "promised" I never go back to stock eclair and have kept that promise. I'm now running FroyoMod 2.6.1b and this is probably the most stable rom I've ever had and if u haven't tried it then u should because it just might me the rom that ur looking for when it comes to stability and capabilities.

Hey MakeW00t , sounds interesting. But fast alone isn't enough for me. Good memory management plays a vital role as well. I just hate to see vital apps (eg. navigational software) got killed just because I had to read my SMS or check a few things on the calendar!
Anyway, thanks for your recommendation. Maybe I'll flash FroyoMod 2.6.1b when I feel Eclair is not enough.
I've been through that before "I never go back to stock eclair" But now that I had it back.. I can't see any reason NOT to..

Same here, it is nice to have a PHONE again, and Eclair makes it real... Sad but true... I tried and tested almost all mods available on this forum (including official stock froyo update and Froyo Mod 2.6, which unfortunately also appears to be frustrating and sluggish after only 2-3 days of intensive use, without too much apps installed at all!)... must admit that my personal favorite is MIUI by lalit79 (recommendations, great job done lalit!), but after some serious stability/speed issues in latest version (overheating during battery charge, ext2/4 not working whatever method I tried, FCs), Eclair is the ultimate choice of the moment (I need a stable and reliable device, for calls and long bussines emails, no crashes or FC-s or reboots)... at least, until a new MIUI version is ready... If you already didn't, try rooting and overclocking eclair with milestone OC (@900/56) - it gives a nice final touch of ultimate speed and joy of "Phone Without Compromise" (and official froyo is one BIG compromise, if you ask me)....
cheers!
Hi mcekic. Well as a matter of fact I did OC my Milestone using Milestone Overclock to 1000Mhz, 69vsel. Battery life is ok so I guess I'll stick with it for a while (If not I will use your 900/56, should give me more battery life - logically).
I believe I have the same needs as you, to have a real PHONE again!
Don't get me wrong, Froyo does have all the extra functionalities (I miss App2SD and Flash 10 the most - but I heard that this is possible on Eclair as well? Havn't done my homework yet in regards to this) but in the end, all that functionalities goes to waste when the performance is sacrificed.
I have also OC'ed the phone to 1Ghz when I was running Froyo. But I think the main culprit is the memory management. It just can't stop killing apps, and when it does, the phone felt slow. I used Autokiller, that helped a bit, but Eclair still wins.
Now, does anyone knows the best Eclair ROM ? I need a naked ROM if available. Whoa now that would be super fast!
Guys, I think this thread would fit in this one very well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029887
Roms: Continuous comparison of milestone roms and updates
well s0ulreaver, now that you mentioned it, I do think this discussion would very well belong there.
Can any mod possibly merge this?
I think Froyo is so heavy for MS. But in another view, it's not too bad.
Did you try stock ROM from Motorola?
Except DSI, I think it's acceptable. You can run at 550MHz without any problem.
With CM6, I have to OC at 750.
But now I use it for daily uses, because it's very convenience.

yup, went back to eclair after several froyo/gb roms (cm6, froyomod, miui, cm7).
our milestone just don't have the ram for anything more memory demanding than eclair

i tried stock 2.1 from moto germany but then switched to telus lite 5.2 with a gb skin. it runs smooth and stable like a rock and can handle multiple apps in mem (facebook, maps, opera and minor stuff like talk, gmail, etc at the same time).
besides the skin it is pretty vanilla and wields all the nice stuff like overclocking and the cache hack.
Eclair is the best. i overclocked at 800Mhz with 58 Volts. Its smooth and no bugs/issues. It never restarts and works just fine.

You mean stock Froyo ROM from Motorola? No I haven't tried it yet, but I saw this guy here posted Froyo stock running flash 10.2 on his Milestone overclocked to 1.2Ghz and it runs great
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaCspAW8RzA
i have never saw flash video that plays so smooth on the Milestone - and am happy to see one! I'm gonna try Froyo stock when i have the time, but of course, I need to do a Nandroid backup first
What's a DSI?

Well, I believe you're an experienced custom froyo ROM user then. For me I didn't have the time to flash that many froyo ROMs to test. But hey, I guess you've saved my time by sharing your experience with it right
Cool, I should not be doing much this weekend so I think I'll make up some time to flash telus lite 5.2 - The most important thing for me is to have a reliable phone, and a responsive one as well. Based on your recommendation, I think telus lite 5.2 fits the bill. Will try it out and give my opinion on it later. Thanks!

Hey I was running on 1Ghz 69vsel, now trying 800Mhz 58vsel. Hopefully there is a noticeable difference in the battery life! Thanks hp13!

btw: if you want a gingerbread-look on telus lite (as the default skin and fonts are ugly imho) try "better gingerbread theme for 2.1". just make sure you delete settings.apk and motocardock.apk in the skin update zip.

Thanks, hey, as a matter of fact, let me try this on my stock 2.1 ROM.
A bit update on my 2.1 stock, when downloading big files over 100MB via browser and saving to SDCard, my phone will eventually be in the 'sleep of death' mode where it sleep and will never turn on again - unless I remove and reinsert the battery of course. Not sure what's causing this.
Update : It was my MicroSD card which been causing this. It's corrupted somehow or rather ...
Another issue is that when I record videos and battery is low, during the end of recording, the phone will hang. Tried this several times when the battery is low (about 15% charge left), and confirmed that is the issue - why? possible cause maybe not enough power to process / save these videos? Snapping pictures works ok. On some devices (especially Samsungs), camera and video function will be denied access when battery is low. I guess this could be the issue unless anyone else have not run into this problem before?
hmm now i really want to go back to eclair, cm7 is to big for the milestone
Indeed, Telus Lite 5.2 is the way to go. Very good stability and speed.
Darn... I've just flashed Telus 5.2 last Sunday and it's TRUE that this is the fastest ROM available for the Milestone!
I just can't believe the speed that I'm getting. I feel that I can outbeat a Tegra even! Hahahaha..
The phone (compared to stock 2.1) is also cooler when tethering. I used to get up around 46c - 57c, with the Telus I'm getting like 34c - 47c with wifi tether on.
In terms of battery life. After 13hrs 10minutes, my battery went down from 100% to 50%. Edge was turned on all the time. 15minutes of Wifi tether with HSDPA on. 30minutes of fb and websurfing. 15 minutes on Papago GPS. Some SMS and whatsapp plus yahoo messenger runnin all the time as services. Not bad.
Highly recommended for Eclair users!
AFAIK though, nobody has been able to get app2ext working in Telus Lite.
People have gotten app2ext work with stock eclair though. (1 of these days, I plan to go back to rooted, OC'd, GOT sbf eclair. I assume that app2ext will work as GOT is heavily based on the stock eclair sbf.)

GOT Eclair is Stock Eclair, it is a Leak of the official Firmaware. only change is the vulnerable recovery afaik.
rest of GOT specific modifications are applied through OR! was one of the best Eclair FW's i tried (for the first time my alarm and geolocation service were working ; )

yeah i tried Eclair too again, rly a difference in speed, but some features brought me back to CM6.
imo there are good reasons to go back and stay at eclair, but there are also good reasons to stay on froyo tbh.
+speed speed speed
+multitasking
+battery life
-no flash
-old google apps some can't be updated (gmail, youtube)
-no "2 finger Map Rotation Maps"
I installed Cyanogen Mod 6.1 Magpie on my HTC G1 Dream.
Almost all applications are installed on the SD Ext partition.
It's deadly slow. I can't bare it.
Do you have a better, faster, more stable ROM to suggest?
I need SD Ext partition support.
I crawled the forum, but I am new to Android and feel lost.
I am now good with adb, rom partitionning and rom flashing though.
I always wipe everything before flashing (including system).
Give me your best advise please.
I really think that froyobylaszlo is the best. Stable and very fast ROM =)
Latest version of EzGingerbread is excellent and stable as a rock (I have been using it for a couple of weeks now). Also pretty fast and great battery life. On 2G I am almost getting 2 days out of it.
It has the latest Gingerbread version and Ezterry is still around to support the rom.
froyobylaszlo looks promissing, fast and stable.
I will give it a try and tell you what I think of it.
After reading the EzGingerbread thread, I think I prefer to try the froyobylaszlo first.

Depends also much on your requirements. FbL will run smooth without the "RAM-hack", i.e. installing the 0013d/2708 combo. Running EzGingerbread without it will be a pain, but if you install that combo, it runs very very well. I think it compares well to the original 1.6, but having much more features
froyobylazslo and ezginbread are by far my two most favorite roms, but you will have some lags with either one here and there. so if this bothers you you'll have to go back to eclair or donut to get the absolute best speed on a g1. just remember you will be missing out on a ton if you do this! so i say try them both and hope the lags wont be to much to bare.
Thats a coincidence, because I have been playing with my Dreams and flashing a bunch of oldies but goodies. Last week I flashed CM 6 Magpie - same as yours. I flash ohsaka super wipe before flashing magpie. but the first thing I do after it boots is 1. enable nonmarket apps and 2. go to cyanogenmod settings and allow for application moving automatically and then 3. install root explorer, go to system/app and wipe out all the junk all wallpapers, youtube gmail email everything just keep the bare minimum and at the end I have like 6 apps to play with then it is a very workable ROM, and also install cache for root and enable to clear every hour - and it has been running nice and simple ever since. Granted its not my daily driver, but anyway Fierat really made a big difference with magpie...
Froyo is weird on the G1. Gingerbread is much more natural you just have to get creative with which apps you install. EZGingerbread is nice... its more of a novelty.
But my absolute most favorite ROM ever for the G1 is SuperBad by htcClay and 2nd is SuperE by Buchacher. Those are the best roms when you are actually using it as a daily driver.
Although I did manage with The Dudes Cupcake for almost 6 months as my work phone, and its all a matter of how committed you are to seeing it through.
FroyobyLaszlo is the most capable Froyo Rom for the G1 for me. But I really never liked Froyo, it was only a short period of time in between CM5 and CM7 which blew away CM6.
I recommend my froyo rom. Its quite fast (better than cm6, I've never tried fbl so I can't compare..)
It (unlike fbl, cm6, and other roms froyo or lower) is still getting updates. And ive recently started caring about security do expect changes soonish

true that! I have found that EzGingerbread 1.0 to be probably the fastest/most stable rom I have tried (If you set it up the way it says in the thread and install the older versions of facebook and maps as suggested). SuperE was not bad but not my favorite. I would avoid Froyo roms. I have never has one run well, including the official T-Moble for MT3G OTA update.

?... novelty..? I might have agreed if you were talking about Ice Cream Sandwich because that is probably too slow, but EzGingerbread is not a novelty for sure.
I have used it for the last 3 releases and especially 1.0 is ready for every day use. Everything works very smooth. Almost all roms I have used the last few years had some issues (I bought my 1st G1 in 2008), I have to find the first issue with EzGingerbread in combination with the recommended Radio-2.22.28.25 and SPL 1.33.0013d
No forced closes, fast, etc.

I used it from one of the early alphas (the first one with autokerkel) and I've had a similar experience. There were bugs in early builds (if you didnt expect that, you must be crazy), bit I've had no problems with it. Was my daily for most of the time I used my mytouch
DREAMTeam Froyo is a best ROM.
DREAMTeam Froyo by TVall is best. I have been using with Titanium backup and ext2 and with custom mtd
Froyobylaszlo and GingerYoshi are the best
According to my experience Froyobylaszlo is the best for performance but I ended up using GingerYoshi because it has all languages supported (Arabic in my case). So if you only need English go ahead with Froyobylaszlo but if you want another language you might want to check if it's included first. EzGingerBread does not include all languages either. GingerYoshi's performance is not bad at all if you use LauncherPro and it includes all language packs.
Laszlo's release is pretty buggy from my experience. I would stick to one of the many gingerbread releases, dream team froyo, or my ROM after I can get out the next alpha.

I'm running ezGingerbread right now and am going to test out the newest version... but I think I already decided I want a more minimized version. I literally delete every app that can be deleted and using my phone as a daily driver mostly for messaging (SMS) and listening to music. I don't even have an internet flat. And I remember my 1.6 original ROM was way faster than this now. And I don't use/ need almost all of the new features, since my G1 runs so slow and my battery is old and drains so fast.
So, my question are, are the 1.6 roms the fastes out there?
And which roms still are being maintained other than ezGingerbread?
Thanks so much guys!
FroyobyLazlo 5.2 hands down is the Best CM6 Rom.
CM7 Magpie is the best CM7 Rom.
I don't use AOSP Roms, but they'll always have the best speed. Also most free Ram.
Personally FBL, with a Gingerbread Theme. Ext4. All apps to SD, and Use the lastest Froyo Kernel. But FBL has crazy speed with it's kernel, but it's reboots every couple of hours.
Mt debloated Cm7.1 Rom GingerbreadbyNomy (RC1) With the latest GB kernel is worth trying. I'm not saying it's the fastest, but it has like 75% free Ram.

Of course 1.6 will always be fast.. the G1 isn't meant to run anything over that

In my opinion donut ROMS (Superd 1.11 with Elegance (BETA) 1.1.1 theme) are the best for daily ROM, you can have "heavy" apps running on background without missing sms, fc's, random reboots, lags, incoming call instantly, etc. but if you want the newest features ezGingerbread it's the best for me and your G1 will have around 30mb of free ram every time
