Is there a way to change the name and icon of an app that has already been installed on a nonrooted G1?
Get BetterCut.
I knew bettercut worked for creating icons on the desktop but does it also work in the menu?
I would like to know about the name changing also. There's been some apps that just have long ass names! I don't need to see "Chee Wee's Screen Timeout App" when "Screen Timeout" or even "Timeout" would be much better to me
I am looking for this as well. Is there a way? Some of the apps I have installed just have their names cut in the menu and end with "...".
Is this possible without the source? I would like to change my security apps, the ones that I text and it gives me the location? I think a theif would see these apps and delete them after he steals the phone.
IIRC...
you need to unpack the .apk of the file and edit the part to change (icon or name [ i have no idea what they are called] and then rezip and resign and then install again.
Here's a link on how to do it for the ICONs:

Hey all,
I'm really liking the tile look of the new Windows 7 phones (see screenshot) and I found a bundle of png's I can use desktop visualizer to replicate but I'm wondering if anyone would be able to mod the app SMS Unread Count to fit the tile theme and display the unread count for Gmail, phone calls and texts (again, see screenshot). I know there's a thread on how to apply the unread count to png's, but I'm not a developer and it's completely over my head. If anyone's willing to help, I'd be incredibly grateful and more than happy to donate.
I'm about 100 % sure that's posted three or four times - Each in it's own Phone 7 Style thread.
You should really, really try using the search function.
Seriously.
I see that you're new; Did you read the !!!STOP BEFORE YOU POST!!! threads?
Or the rules even? You should have.
It's posted somewhere. Probably in the first post of the threads dedicated to Windows 7 styles.
EDIT: Here's one
Well, when I look at the screenshot it has the unread number inside the picture and not in the bubble above it. I have never seen SMS unread look like that either.
On your SD card you have a folder called "data".
Inside that folder there's another one called "com.kankosmswidget" or something like that.
Just put the icons in that folder and choose Custom Icon when you add SMS Unread Count.

thank you
Ok I have searched all morning and I am hoping that someone can help me. I am using desktop visualizer to use custom icons and I have installed sms unread count so that I can get the unread counts for email and sms. My problem is I cant seem to figure out how to use the custom icon with the sms unread count. Could someone please point me in the right direction on how to do this?
Thanks
Read here,I answered about SMS Unread Count app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846485
Thanks. I did try thtat but there are no folders within that one you mentioned. There is just a file in there.
Which folders are at sdcard/data?
And which file is there,"nomedia"?
The folder is in the sdcard/data "com.kanokgems.smswidget" but inside of that folder is just the file "nomedia".
Yes,that`s right!
In this folder put your icons for sms, mail and phone!
Then via settings menu from the app you can choose a custom icon
for sms,mail or phone!
The app then search for custom icons in this folder which is called
"com.kanokgems.smswidget"
ok got it!! For some reason they were not showing up right after I put the icons in there. By any chance do you know what size icons Desktop visualizer uses? When I add the custom icon its bigger than the others and I would like to resize them down to whatever Desktop Visualizer uses as a default.
Thanks again!
Hm,don`t know at the moment,I use 72x72 icons for this!
Yup just resized at 72x72 and they all match now! Thank you so much for all of your help
No problem
Sms count is standard on froyo cos ive had it working but now its not working, android settings are a nightmare, can anyone tell me how to turn it on?
I know this thread is old, but I'd rather dig it up than create a new one. I d/l the app, but on my sd card under data there is no folder to add custom icons. Any one have any idea's??? Thanks in advance

Using your file manager just create the file sdcard/data/com.kanokgems.smswidget and place your icons in the newly created folder

I am using both Desktop VisualizeR and SMS unread count, but the icons do not align. The SMS unread Icons are about 20pixels lower that the desktop visualizer icons. Looking at theses off center icons drives me nuts, anybody knows a way to adjust the position of the icon for Sms unread? Thanks.
Hi,
Can anyone explain how one changes the icons in the notification bar?
More specifically, the 3G icon, Signal Strength, and the notification for a new text message?
Also, I know you can change the carrier name to whatever you like with apps like "CCname" and etc. but I've also seen that people have changed it into actual pictures or .png. Any help?
Thanks
I'd like to know more about this too!
The icons are usually found in framework-res.apk/res/drawable*** and begin with "stat". The email notification depends on what app your using but is also found in res/drawable***. You can change them using metamorph.
Hope this helps.
So do you mean I should use a program like APK Manager, and open up the framework apk? What does metamorph have to do with it? Sorry, don't know anything about this.
Unzip the theme you're using, and navigate your way through the SystemUI folder.
If your theme doesn't come with custom icons, download a theme that does (I use Buuf as a base, because it effectively themes /everything/) and see what naming scheme you require for your custom icons.
Replace the icons in the theme you're using, in the correct folder, and rezip as an .mtz.
Not sure if it's the /best/ way to be doing things, but is working well enough for me. I'm finding it rather easy to create a whole custom theme by simply replacing elements from buuf, with my own, and removing those I want as default.
Edit: I too would like to know about carrier icons, however! haha.

Does anyone know what a sms notification is called? Can't find it in any of the themes for miui. The closest I find is "chat" and i'm assuming thats for google chat
Easiest thing to do is get your rom zip and unpack all the frameworks and apks in apps using 7zip.
Then do a search for "stat" you'll be presented with the icons that appear in your status bar, then you can highlight them to see what apk they came from and edit as you please.
You don't need to use apk tool/manager as your only doing simple edits.
Metamorph will only replace the images you want so you dont need to flash/push a full apk.
Theres threads how to use metamorph, I think one might be a sticky at the top of this section. Its childs play to use it.

the way i have done it today was to take the theme file and open it with 7zip(i just opened the archive, i didnt extract it) and go to folder systemui>res>drawable hdpi>stat_notify_sms.png or whatever file you want to change, then i would delete the file that i wanted to change and add the renamed file that i wanted to the archive. it has to match the stat_notify_sms.png name, or whatever the image is that your changing, or it will not work. then i just put it into dropbox and dl'd it to my phone and installed it
the only downside for me was that i couldnt change that image to the little ribbon that i wanted to. other than that i was able to change the signal bars, the wifi bars, and the 3g bars, but the sms wouldnt change for me, neither would the gmail.
I'm using the stock sms from miui.

For Gmail notification you will have to put
stat_notify_email.png here
com.google.android.gm->res->drawable-hdpi
if these folders do not exists create them.
For changing SMS notification icon changing stat_notify_sms.png under
com.android.mms->res->drawable-hdpi
will change SMS notification icon
Hope this helps.
Ok, Just to be clear.
First, I find a pre-made theme, and change the .mtz to .zip so I can open it.
Then I find the icon i want to replace and change it with the exact name.
Then I compress it back to a .zip.
Then I rename the .zip into a .mtz.
Should that work?

What is needed:
- 7zip
- Sublime Text 3
Here we go. The prerequisite is time to rest and work accurately!
After you have installed the two programs are set to go.
Think up a folder where the issues come in here (.hwt). Always works only with copies!
Here you should create a subfolder with the topic name you now. There you unpacked the topic. Go into that folder and subfolders again sets each with the appropriate name. example:
com.android.settings = com.android.settings e
So you keep track of things.
The repeated her with the topic, which ye icons, etc you want to have.
Now comes the actual act. Take the issue of the want to edit it, in my case, Edward Returns.hwt and clicks it right (not extract!), Just select Open.
Next, locate the com.android.settings and open it again.
Here again open the res folder. Here delete the contents (click there and delete right).
Now we take the topic from which we want the icons. Also re-open and click through to the folder res. Now we select the content and push it, hold by the left, into the folder from another topic. We confirm the prompt with Yes. Now is the content in the other folder. Now we can both close, confirm the prompt with Yes and we already did it. Only on Mate7, select and look the topic. If you want, you can even assign a name. For the description.xml with Sublime Text 3 Open Notepad and then copy into the theme.
You can also use your own icons here on size, format and name eighth! It is also possible to take files from other themes if they do not exist.
Of course, goes even more, color etc, but you will still need to edit the corresponding .XML files.
Here are a few paths:
- Contacts com.android.contacts
- Gallery com.android.gallery3d: Here lies the Gallery widget.
- Player com.android.mediacenter: Here the player is widget.
- Settings com.android.settings: Here is what you see under settings and submenus.
- Links com.android.systemui: Here is what you see Status Bar / Benarichtigungen / Verküpfungen.
- Designs com.huawei.android.thememanager: Here is what you see under Themes.
- Clock / weather widget
com.huawei.android.totemweather / res
drawable-nodpi: Here are the wallpapers
drawable-sw360dp-xxhdpi: Here are the symbols
- Icons icons: This is what you see on the homescreen icons.
Thanks , i would like to create a theme for me, a dark one, simple and clear but unfortunately, i really didnt understand the procedure Is it possible for you to make a step by step guide ? Taking the default theme and changing it ?
I need one with dark toggle background, and white toggles, the one selected blue or red.
Than the notifications background black and white text and icons.
on settings , dark background and white text + icons.
So sorry i dont understand , i would have tried to make some themes
Thanks !
For the font you need to edit the corresponding XML files. This is tedious. It is easier to look for the best ducks already in coarse threads and replace only the background, symbols etc is.
A Guide for the XML I'm not going to write, which is too complex, as there is also still required Chinese.
You can read here.

Or here keeping an eye out for suitable topics.

Thank you dude !
cool instruction
i also want to edit this specific theme Edward Returns for my Ascend p7, the theme is as of now only for Mate 7 it cant be found on p7 online themes, so i downloaded this theme and installed on my p7, everything is as it should be except the icons, the system Apps icons are well, but the apps that i have installed their icons dont fit in the icon frame of the theme, they are bigger than the theme icons so they come on top of the frame, but some of the Apps that have smaller icons i can see the icon frame of the theme behind them. So i wanna know if it is possible to resize the icons so they fit the icon frame? and how it can be done?
Thanks in advance :good:
Unpack theme, edit icons and then copy the unzipped not matter.
Does anyone know how to change the background color in Messeges? i have a really cool theme but there is some error in its Messages App the background is white while the timestamp in the left side is also in white color so i can read the time... i dont know which line in themes.xml should i change????
Unfortunately, I do not quite understand you. The background images are. Just as the symbols of the timeline. About the xml you lay down only the text color and the assignment.
can you help me of that modified whatsapp called WhatsMaap changing icon cause it looks so bad because the whatsapp icon is circle so there is a black or green background the app icon
this is the app dude : https://plus.google.com/communities/111022663413469989470
I need to modify the text colour of notifications into NOTIFICATION PANNEL.
Not the standard text you find below email notification or whatsapp notifications, just the ones poping up with text surrounded by circle and asking to close a particular application consuming too much battery, for example.
Actually these notifications text are in black and, since the background is black, they aren' t readeble at all, while the others notifications (i.e. whatsapp notifications, email notifications, etc. etc.) are properly in white (see picture attached).
Considering that I need to keep the background as black, I would need to modify the notifications text colour only, from black to....white, or light blue, or other which result more readable on the black background.
I tried to edit and modify the hwt file, as well as the XML file contained into the com.android.systemui file, but unsuccesfully.
Can you explain me which file and line I must modify in order to have fixed this?
None can help me??? Fooox1, Kolembo,Hannanzikrea, please assist.
I've edited the stat_sys_battery_15.png file on a theme, but every time my phone goes down to that level the battery icon reverts to stock. All other times the battery icon displays the custom one. Anyone know why and/or how to fix this?
