Hi.
I saw several threads on the matter but with no solution and they're from September 2010... maybe some new info has emerged...
I just bought the Captivate (not using with AT&T). It was with android 2.1 and with a decent outgoing sound quality.
I upgraded to 2.2 (installed [ROM] Obsidian V4.2) and now the outgoing phone calls are with bad quality.
The incoming sound is perfect. People tell me I sound bad as if from a very distant and deep submarine... I tried re-surfacing but alas it didn't help...
Is there any solution? driver? another ROM proved with quality? since at first it worked fine I imagine it's a software not hardware problem.
Thanks in advance.
I found that most of the newer 2.2 roms are based on the I9000UGJK3 modem and kernel which allows us to have HSUPA, but call quality suffers greatly. Until theres a source released for us cappy users, we're stuck with this issue. I went back to cog 2.16 because of that
Actually that new modern you mentioned is part of my daily driver. You just have to make sure you paiute the current modem with the correct rom.failure to do so will result in the results you have received.

I am also having horrendous call quality issues with that I9000UGJK3 setup.
So basically no one knows what can be done and I'm stuck with an amazing phone that can't be used as a phone....
Not able to use warranty - bought in the states and not living there....
ANY ideas???

Obsidian hasnt been updated in some time. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863776, this rom is my fav so far, call quality much better, not great but better, FAST and has all the eye candy plus more. remember to flash to stock first, JF6 then master clear, use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
perfect
I finally installed this one

Out of curiosity what's not stable about the hybrid rom other than gps? Just wondering because I've been running it for a week without a single hiccup.

hybrid R3+bugless mod
i9000+jh3+ext4

I need some help with customizing my Samsung Galaxy S. This morning I decided to do it considering the large amount of great testimonials after a lag fix.
What I have done so far:-
Fixed the three-button problem
Rooted my phone with OneClickLagFix
Installed the OneClickLagFix
Fixed Headset quality with SamServMode
What my version is (*#1234#):-
I9000DTJG3 (so I'm assuming JG3?)
Firmware Version:-
2.1-update1 (That's what it says in my settings)
What question is, which Custom ROM would suite my phone?
A couple questions for you as I am really new to android and my sgs...
What kind of quality change did you see with the headset fix and lagfix?
And how did you fix the 3br problem? I thought that was fixed by flashing JH2 (the newest one) Where as JG3 and older JH2 had problems with the 3 button. I have a newer JH2 flashed phone, but just curious as I have friends without the JH2 3BR fix.

+1 ... Most developers are not making much as it is..more of a hobby trying to improve the android experience for everyone...why do you want to rip them off?

Sorry, I assumed the relaxed iPhone community would be the same here.
Can anyone help me with a Custom ROM?
Bump. Looking forward to customizing my phone.
I haven't flashed a new ROM in awhile and really don't want to have to go through every ROM/modem combination to find one that works for my needs. I know plenty of folks here go through almost every ROM that is available so I'm hoping to pick your brains.
1) I'm NOT asking "what is the best ROM". I <3 -all- of the ROM authors and don't wish to start that kind of mess.
2) I'm willing to try a couple of combinations to see.
3) My Cappy is brand new (I just exchanged my old one under warranty since I was one of those in the original batch that got the lovely random shutdown issue even with 2.1-update1) ... not sure if that is going to matter or not but I've read a lot of posts that seem to make it clear that different Cappy batches behave better with different ROMs.
So ... what I'm primarily looking for:
* I'm on AT&T so I need 850
* I would REALLY like to get improved GPS performance ... I don't want to buy a standalone GPS (wife has one, I'll use it when I have to) ... right now even with the GPS tweaks like Skyhook I'm just not getting acceptable lock times and it loves to break lock.
* HSUPA ... I'd like to enable HSUPA. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area with a new 3G tower and small population, which means I know there is more bandwidth available so I might as well use it. Especially since on occasion I need to tether.
* I don't want to lose noise cancellation
* I would like a ROM with good battery performance
Otherwise I'm not concerned with new features ... besides the issues above I do fine with the 2.1 ROM (not saying I don't want 2.2, just saying I don't care whether the custom ROM includes custom launchers, themes, etc). I would -like- working Bluetooth + HSUPA but my version of "working Bluetooth" doesn't care about voice dialing.
PS. I've read a number of threads on ROMs and modems ... but my brain hit information overload once I started trying to match up both. I probably could have settled on a single ROM -or- modem, but trying to get them to mesh well just didn't compute.
Everyone has different experiences with different roms. I know it's a cliche but it's true. I've had pretty much no gps in a rom that boasts about gps. Best to try each rom and see if you like any.

Personally I love my combo of darky's 9.1 with suckerpunch oc/uv kernel and the tjl3 modem. I really haven't used the gps much and so I can't say about that (make sure to use faster fix to get the right region). The battery life is all day for me and I use stereo bluetooth headphones all day. I really like the look too. I don't know if it has noise canceling though. Hopefully this is helpful.
HSUPA requires an I9000 based ROM with a matching modem.
I'm using Serendipity 5.0 with a JK4 modem.

The only way to have noise cancellation is to stay with 2.1. From what I understand, att is the only one to have included the noise cancellation chip and since we do not yet have an official Att 2.2 source we can not take advantage of the chip.
Not sure on this one, but doesn't i9000 based roms have the bt static issue? And is the i9000 roms the only ones that let you have hsupa? Sorry a lot of information is on this site and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

Started with the included modem (??), flashed jk4 with CWM (didn't help), moved to Telus JL3. I like JL3 better right now.
Just know that you have to pay attention to what ROM you're using. If you're running a I9000 rom, you have to use a I9000 modem.

Hi guys sorry if this is a stupid question but I have looked on the forum and not really found what I wanted. I would like to know if there is any pretty stable 2.3 Roms for the Galaxy S out yet. Links to the threads would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Dali
there is no official version of 2.3 gingerbread.. only beta version XWJV1, you can find it here -> CLICK
CM7 is available (based on 2.3.3).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940095
it's not final yet.. contain some bugs, and its not for daily use ..
Iv been using CM7 now for two weeks or so and its perfectly stable. There are a few things that don't work but most things for everyday use does. And its being updated every other day. Just make sure to read the instructions and understand the steps before you try it out.

If by perfectly stable, you mean "no crashes", then yeah, I'd agree. It never crashed for me either. HOWEVER, if you actually USE your phone as more than a toy, good luck.. CM7 didn't even pick up the correct IMEI, camera/video recording is broken, etc. But GPS at least "works" (about as well as any normal SGS in my opinion, which isn't that great anyway). I also recall the phone signal fluctuating a lot more last I used it.
A simple question: If you relied on phone calls through your mobile to make your money for your job, would you trust CM7 beta yet? I wouldn't! In fact, in my opinion most the stuff that worked was either on par, or below par with the stock firmware. There was also a lot of stuff that didn't work.
I didn't see any real benefit to using the ROM yet. It's a fun toy, but my overall experience was worse with it. It will grow your e-penis, but considering only recently they fixed the touchscreen support on it, clearly, it still is early days. The main features which seem to have made the SGS a better phone at launch than competitors (with the exception of Multitouch), don't seem to be there yet

Agree on everything. CM7 looks sexy and is pretty fast(wouldnt say much faster than the latest lagfixed samsung stuff but fast ) That's why I still hope for some roms from samsung in the coming months(ofcourse GB) , and ofcourse source release cause I cant live withoout Voodoo Sound
But nowhere in his post did Dali mention anything about business. All he asks is if there are any 2.3 ROMs. IMHO there are very few problems with CM7 and as far as call signal goes using the JQ1 modem has improved my signal substantially.
I'd still recommended trying it out and if your not happy you can always revert to stock. Simples

It's true he never mentioned business. But he did mention STABLE roms.
My point was to provide an alternative perspective. There is a growing prevalence of users pushing software which they believe is "stable", however, put the biggest peddlers of such software in a situation where your time costs money, and a lot of the times, they will suddenly say it isn't stable enough (which seems to be a perspective a lot of vocal Linux users have never experienced).
And whilst there are "limited problems", there are certainly more serious issues than the standard stock ROM's.. Camera support, fm support (at least last build I tried) and the compass is definitely dodgy. HD quality movie playback for myself was also broken... As mentioned, the ROM also showed my IMEI as corrupt when I tried the ROM the second time..
The question is, do you want to inconvenience yourself simply to have a glorious 2.3 rom, or do you realistically want the most productive ROM?
Hi,
I own my galaxy for like 3 weeks now.
The first 2 weeks I was running stock 2.2.1, and had sudden reboots (it even entered into safe mod once I was sleeping and woke up from the sound the phone was doing), force closes.
So I decided and installed deodexed stock rom with speedmod kernel (+lagfix and recommended tweaks), and I feel that my phone is still bad. Angry birds keeps freezing the phone, wifi errors, and I can't run my phone more than 50hrs of uptime, it either will randomly reboot or as it happens today simply turns it self off and wont let me to turn in on (or getting into recovery/download mode).
When this phone was out everybody said its awesome (fast, stable etc) and I waited for prices to get down, now when I finally got it I think that I made a mistake.
Is anybody else frustrated with their phone? Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should I hope that samsungs gingerbread will fix this? Or
maybe I should try custom rom like Darky or CM7?
Maybe all smartphones sucks and I dont know it because I never had a smartphone before?
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot!
is it a new or used one mate ??????
i had it for 1 year now its the best
Its a new one of course.
Are you running any custom rom/kernel?
the beauty of SGS and Android is the continuous evolution of the ROMs you install...
I tried many different ROMs , and I am sure you would finally find something that will make you happy with the machine...
for a start, if you are on 2.2.1, get Darky 9.5 and you wont be disappointed.
Your phone is faulty. I had the device on stock froyo for 4 months after buying it and I never had random reboots or wifi issues.
Definitely take it back. I've modded mine so many times and still looks new to me. Had mine since January of this year.

By take it back, he meant to send the phone back for repairs or replacement under warranty to Samsung.
I have no problem with my phone, the only thing i dont like is the free ram available... seem low to me
@timelessfahad Thanks for clearing that up.
@vanvn297 You are running a stock 2.2.1 ROM?
Hi,
I recently updated via kies from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 HVJP4.
So far I'm not impressed with the stock froyo rom. It's often sluggish and apps, especially email from exchange, crash reguarly.
I have not experienced any problems with wifi or 3g reception however.
I'm still trawling the forum, trying to find all the info and confidence to backup the current rom and try something different, but there's a good chance a stock gingerbread rom will appear before that happens. Hopefully it will address some of these problems. Fingers crossed

Gingerbread works fine
The issue with wifi is pretty known from what I looked (strange thing it never happened on the stock samsung rom only started to happen on deodexed stock with speedmod kernel).
The other thing my original rom was XXJPY and I flashed a deodexed XXJPY so maybe the rom it self is not that good. Gonna try XXJVH/XXJVB deodexed with Demian kernel probably, or will try Darky ROM (also considering CM7).

in my opinion cm7 has gotten to the point that there is no reason not to install it... its litterally just a single zip now after you have rooted and put cwm on you're phone. the battery is fine, the photo/video is fine (although the samsung camera is way better... panoramic pics ftw) wifi/data is fine/ no need for lagfix/ and its constantly being updated..
edit: actually I think the battery might be better than what I was getting on darky 9.5...
i have been frustrated about my sgs for the first month until i discovered the rom world
usally the stock rom comes bloated with **** and uneeded stuff wich makes the phone slower and many other useless things...(i think)
i am still kind of new to all this and there is so much info do some reading and see how your sgs can be a beast
I too am not feeling the awesomeness of the Galaxy S. My friend got his one when it came out and its hard to believe this is the same phone I thought of as awesome all that time.
I got it new last week, and experiencing quirky behavior that really makes me feel like I'm using a low-mid class phone, and made me completely unenthusiastic/ not inclined with moving to the new phone which is how it should be. I even used my old Motorlla V8 for days after I got the SGS cos I was so unimpressed.
Poor camera, reception, crashes, dropouts, low wi fi signal, stutters, not responding to taps etc, really clunky loose volume button that makes it feel cheap, cheap sounding speaker. And I haven't installed anything on it except quadrant standard, and that crashes sometimes too.
To elborate a little. As far as comparable qualities go, compared to my Motorolla V8, The reception and voice quality is poor. Same network same simcard, I get half the signal, during a call it will sometimes dropout or make that guitar like noise, whereas my V8 never did any of that.
Even when I am next to a wi fi router. It doesn't show full wi-fi signal. Not even at my friends house. It reaches nowhere near as much as any laptop I have had.
I gotta compare these attributes to my friends sgs.
What I have compared so far is the camera, which is much worse on mine, You can see the thread here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081453
The AMOLED screen is also a lot dimmer, and cant display white as pure white but a grey/blue tint. Same settings max brightness.
For example quadrant standard, the spinning DNA like helix test. His background is pure snow white, mine is an off blue/grey dim white.
We also compared speakers, same song. His one has stronger clearer sounds, its quite noticable. All in all I'm wondering If I should replace my phone within the 14 day period.
I already took it back one about the camera issue to where I got it and the guy said its fine, so I would really have to go to Vodaphone or samsung directly to get a new one, which I did, and they said go to a repair centre. Even if they even have stock, it could be the same problems. And I would have to prove all these grey area problems.
Anyway check out my other thread as well and apply the Spectrum or Waveform Wallpaper. I wonder if its glitching here, but I think its most likely normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1086257
I will try upload a vid soon.
I am using my sgs now for 2 month, and i have to say its a great phone.
But its only great if you flash it.
In my opinion stock roms by Samsung are not fast enough,
full with useless apps and many tweaks like voodoo sound and gps fixes are missing.
(Tested 2 SGS from different providers, both roms not usable)
Try Darkys rom as also mentioned on page one.
There are many roms, and not all of them are bugfree and stable.
You have to remember the programmers arent payed for their work.
If you still have wifi problems uing darkys rom, your phone is damaged.
You probably need to start afresh.
Reflash a stock rom (ie. JPU which is a fill rom), then update to stock gingerbread. There shouldn't be many bugs at all.

I finally plucked up the courage to do exactly that.
I'm now running JVH with a CF rooted kernel and the phone is now performing close to what I hoped for.
Secondary boot loaders have also been fixed and I'll admit I held my breath during that flash.

Ive had mine since day 1 and its been amazing. No latency issues, wifi/data works perfectly, stable, no fc's(force closes), and the display is perfect. It seems they've gotten fairly "cheap" with the manufacturing of the newer, more recent models being shipped.
Love this phone... BUT, im still going to trade it in for an SGS2
