[Q] Is my device a ticking time bomb? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So.. after hours and hours of toiling with my buddies GT-i9000M (Bell Version), we were unable to fix the "Unable to mount to External SD Card. Mount point incorrect." notice, despite flashing different firmware, utilizing the the Flashing of Kernal in Recovery then connecting through adb shell and typing in those various commands.. Nothing worked! Referring to this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=845708)
So long story short. The same day my buddies i9000 broke the same thing happened to mine. I thought mine was done for. So all I did was flash the stock rom (JH2) in my case through odin with .512 pit and I didn't click "Re-Partition" and voila!! EVERYTHING WAS BACK TO NORMAL AND GOOD. No "Unable to mount to External SD Card" (aka Corrupted Internal SD Card) notice for me.
So the question is.. Should I keep this phone? Or sell it? This is the second restart in 2 months. (Screen goes black all of a sudden with two capacitive lights on at the bottom, and appears to be frozen. Only way to restart phone is to pull battery.)
My concern is... Whether or not the days are being counted until my i9000 faces the same demise of my friends i9000.. Reason is, I don't want to be left with a lemon.. Especially since there isn't a SOLID fix for this "SD Internal Failure" issue yet. (dont think there will be).
I purchased this phone used, so I have no warranty or company to fall back on to go for returning purposes.
What do you think? Someone with knowledge of this, or the same experience.. Please let me know your opinion.
Thanks!!

if you read through the entire topic, it does say it only works for soft problem, but not if it's an actual hard fail
if it is corrupted it can be fixed
if the PCB is dead, send it to Bell for repair, make sure you have a receipt / invoice from the original purchase if not they wont even care to look at your phone

I'd really like this question to be answered too. I mean i spent a lot of money.

I recommend you don't tell them you are not the original owner. Just act like you own the thing and scream like a little girl if they refuse you. Also saying it was a gift by someone helps i'm hoping

Oh believe me I did read through all the topics and the PCB wasn't dead, as I read your post already from previous threads about this.
But, for a hardcore noob, such as myself I was unable to do anything substantial to revive my friends phone. My phone on the other hand, which I am talking about in this topic, was solved by a simple flash through odin with stock 2.1 firmware.
But just sold phone, byebye. No more issues for me I hope?

I have had a htc g1 t mobile in 100% working condition for a long period of time. a month ago i rooted the phone ( and i was successful), downgraded the phone to rc29 and tried to put the hero firm ware into my phone. in the process of trying to put the new firm ware i came across some difficulties and now, as what they say "bricked" my phone. immediately as this happened i was able to reach such screens as holding the end key and the camera key landing upon a white page with some options. not having much knowledge i played around with it and now my phone is completely unresponsive. all it will do is start up and stay on the g1 spalsh home screen and only when i take out the battery will it shut of. holding down any certain keys together does not seem to help. i have also given my phone to such companies as SN traders who were unsuccessful in repairing it as they said " they could not identify the problem". perhaps they never really tried. but the point is, i want my phone to work again. do you have any suggestions as to what i may do to bring my phone back to life or perhaps suggest a place to go to that will repair it for a fee. Please help . thanks in advance

When Upgrading to the newest hero rom did you
1. Upgrage to the newest radio? http://code.google.com/p/sapphire-port-dream/
2. Upgrade to the newest SPL? ( You can find it in the first URL)
3. Partition Your SD card to a Fat32/ext3/Linux-Swap?
yes i recal doing all of those things i believe in the process of upgrading to the newest spl or newest radio i went wrong. i think i tried to put a file on b4 having the prerequiste for it. not sure which one. but in the middle of these process is where the problem arose.

When Upgrading the SPL, what where the steps you took?
Did you upgrade the Radio before the SPL?
hmmmmm, seems you screwed yourself. knowledge is power and not enough knowledge is a huge downfall. maybe next time you will take the time to read and understand
sorry, please try again
seems the wrecking crew's bans are all lifted cept for 2

i dont remeber my memory is kind of vague this happend over a month ago. i have resulted to this forum due to a lack of help from such companies as SN trader who had my phone for a month and could not fix it. say i did upgrade the radio b4 the spl? in fact, as i type it, it seems more likely that is what i did.

When applying the latest SPL did you flash a new rom right after??
...
all i remeber is i had the rom on my sd card and when i tried to flash it it showed an error or somthing. this might not be accurate to what actullay happend but my memory is shot.
again with the victim theme? the guy who go's out, buys a new r-1 with no motorcycle endorsement or training then piles it into a tree isn't a victim. he's an idiot. now, what you did is not nearly that, but if you can't get into any recovery screens, you own a brick.
sorry, but rooting your phone isn't like changing the wall paper. bad things can happen.
Seriously buddy, there are warning signs posted on almost all the threads on this forums when dealing with flashing stuff. All the risks are laid out and people will tell you to do your research before doing anything. I was scared ****less the first time i installed the "death/danger" spl even though i knew exactly what i was doing.
You bricked your phone.
There's not much else to say, on the developer section of this forum, there's a thread , something about "thinktank for bricked g1's" go there and you might find some solutions
arbab01, I sent you a PM.

[Q] Question for Anyone who Sent in a Bell I9000M for repair

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones who has to send this phone in for repair.
Going there this morning..
My question is to those that have received their phones back. Any indication that the repair done has anything done different to the phone?
I mean, if they are just replacing the defective guts with essentially the exact same guts but working, does that not mean it will just happen again (SD Failure)?
Or did they actually change something within the phone to make it more durable and essentially eliminate what brought it to them in the first place?
Hopefully someone in the know could answer this... pointless to repair something with another soon to fail board or sd card.
that is a very good question, of all the phones i sent in for repair and got back
they kept their original IMEI numbers
they all came back with replaced PCB (motherboard) and cause of failure is "No Power"
by that i figure out they mean, it does not charge when you plug in the USB cable to the phone after it dies.
it seems like whatever controls the internalSD also controls the USB charging of the phone
so the problem might not really be with the internal SD but rather the power relay that supplies power to the internal SD and battery charge.

This is a great point allgamer.
However fact still remains... if they are swapping out the guts for identical, but working internals, that defeats the purpose of actually correcting the problem as the problem will surely pop up again.
Lets hope it doesnt.. but this phone doesn't seem like a good candidate for constant flashing the way my old HTC Touch Diamond was. Especially if you're doing it with ODIN, you may not have a leg to stand on come out of warranty claims.
At least if you flash something with KIES, because it was an "official" update provided by samsung. So if the phone goes corrupt, you can yell to the heavens and they'd have to fix it, because essentially they corrupted your phone.
It would be great to get some feedback from other members who received their phone back from repair. I wonder if one of those members had the SD go corrupt again with the new Motherboard in place.

HELP?!?!? Returning to stock without a screen?

Hi all,
having only had my phone for around 2 weeks tonight the inner screen of my phone has decided to crack whilst sat on the side doing nothing (Yes, I know, likely story but in my case it is true). Luckily Orange have been very good and are sending out a replacement handset tomorrow as it is still under warranty.
All good I thought, but I am now worried that I have to also send the handset back. It is currently running Darkys firmware and wondered if this is likely to be an issue. Also, the phone is configured for my work email and would like to remove this info before hand.
Any suggestions on how I quicky (and without a screen) return a phone to stock would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Michael

YES its broken the warranty depends upon how close they inspect the phone etc .
Post on a similar topic within the last two months re no screen
Normal method of returning to stock is .
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818556
jje
Pull the Battery and reinsert it.
Get into the Download Mode.
Flash it with a Custom Kernel.
Unplug the USB during the Flashing Procedure
You will end up with a bricked phone which will force Orange to reinstall the firmware.
And as JJEgan said, it all depends upon how they inspect the phone. If they agree for a replacement, then its well and good. Orelse, you can try my method
by your post I gather you don't see anything on the screen. If this is true, why worry. Orange techs will not be able to see what firmware you are running if the screen does not work.
They are not going to install a new screen to see what stuff you have on your phone.
I bought my phone off of the online classifieds, so I thought there was no warranty.
I was having a problem with the USB port not working properly as I got some mushroom soup (Don't ask) in the port. I figured since I do not have any warranty I will take the phone apart and see what I can do. I cut the top of the metal shield off with a Dremel tool and cleaned the USB port out really well. It did work after this, but about two weeks later my internal SC card died.
I brought the phone into Samsung service center and to my disbelief, they replaced the phone, no questions asked. I guess they didn't even open the phone.
I wouldn't worry.

Have I destroyed my new Bell I9000M? RePar with PIT but no PDA.. IDIOT I AM!

**Phone seems to have no power does nothing, pull battery same thing cant even get download flashing screen screen**
I bought my new Bell I9000M and loved it then started about rooting, purchased rom manager premium and download darky rom 9.5 thru it and installed it worked pretty good.
Now I upgraded to 10.2RE and ran it for about 2 weeks without problems then today I started playing with emulators. Played SNES all day then noticed N64 installed played zelda no problems then found a psx emulator.
This is when disaster struck. I went to play FFVII with the psx emulator and it would lock up then quit the program. So I thought if i just did a reboot it might work.
Apon rebooting I started getting Force Close on pretty much all apps.
I tried to just repeat the install procedure for 10.2RE with odin including to make sure the repartition option was checked and it would load up then say something about UID inconsistent so I retried about 3 times (seems like it wasn't actually repartitioning then installing the clean software).
Frustrated I rebooted my PC and redid the process clicking the repartition then like a F'n Tard only loaded the PIT and not the PDA!!!
So no power
recovery botton method not working
tried vol down+power, vol up+down+power, just power (all with battery pulls)
the thing doesnt blink, cherp, or squat
I think Im done but pleeeease someone have something for me to do I am not a noob in these kind of things but it just came down to not double checking before hitting start.
Do i have a $400 paper weight and need to save for a S2???

Sounds like you are gonna need to try and make a jig or grab one off ebay, if that fails then, you can always try a repair shop, if you are in the GTA I can recommend a place to you, they have a JTAG
Yeah I think its a JTAG repair at that point which involves a lot more hands on (search youtube - they have demos).
Graham
Well Im reading that I need to jtag.. Ive done this with satellite receivers before but my usb equipment is different then what all the youtube videos are showing.
From what I read I have a full/hard brick
I'm I wrong in that a jig will only fix a software brick (or does this classify as such) I can easily make the jig which i will attempt tomorrow but I just want to know if its worth my time as i read that a jig only works when u have a black screen with two little white boxes showing or something like that
Im in Edmonton, AB Canada can anyone help me out with a jtag? (If a jig is going to work then let me know to as Im waaay to tired right now!)
thanks for the help

Ahh right I just noticed the part where you said you have no power.... I dont think the jig will work for you in that case...
Just checked kijiji, you can call these guys and see if they have a JTAG

http://edmonton.kijiji.ca/c-service...es-Best-Prices-Guarranteed-W0QQAdIdZ218015698
So after much searching I have not found anyone in Edmonton who provides jtag flashing in town. If I was in Toronto I would be set.
Anyways since no one provides this service in Edmonton I feel like I should purchase the equipment and start providing this services.
Does anyone know what software and jtag I need to get and I reputable site to order off of?

Not that I have a fix, but that use to be a semi normal step about 10 mos ago installing firmwares, to do the pit by itself, I hardly would think that step caused your problem... I could me misguided. This is the first post I have read with this issue though...
There is a user on the east coast that was about to get one before I convinced him to try warranty first as they were still all under a year old. Which you might try too...
Brisk something was his handle. Check back in my posts late July maybe...

[Q] My Galaxy S+ is acting rather ... weirdly.

Hi everyone!
I've got a question for you all about my Samsung Galaxy + (GT19001) is acting rather weirdly. I'm no native speaker of English and I'm not familiar with the terminology (since I'm a noob and don't really understand computer thingeys) so I'd like the answer of a few experts before I lose my temper and buy a new phone all together.
Here's the thing. A few weeks ago, I got this phone from my father. He's too old for this technology, he didn't understand it. Hence, I took it from him. But... A few hours ago, I dropped it.
yes... I dropped it. The phone looked fine, I booted the system again, I received a connection to the internet and I got a connection with my sim card, so all seemed fine. BUT; later this evening I wanted to find something on the internet and I noticed this rather strange behaviour. I wouldn't say that my phone is in a loop, but this is what happened:
- the touch screen became really anxious and in the half of the time just touching the screen may result in making pictures. (....?)
- If that isn't annoying enough, the phone works just fine, as long as you touch the screen. So, what happens is that the phone makes a lot of pictures and when you let go, the phone returns to the start screen. That doesn't mean that the phone is rebooting, but it means that it returns to the first screen (on the same wall you'd also place your widgets and maps and stuff). This doesn't make any sense. I reasoned that it was due to a bug and I decided to reboot the whole system. Didn't work. Nextly, I can't get any access to Samsung Kies or Samsung Odin because "the server is unavailable 4100".
It's a real nuisance because currently we don't have any internet connection (because the connection from the provider broke down during a storm >>>>), but as you see, I'm still able to connect my laptop via USB to my phone and I can still access the internet. I don't get it.
So, there are two things I'd like to know. What's going on? Is this failure the result of me dropping the phone? And if this isn't the case, how on earth do I fix it?
Thanks for your answers
Well I don't think it's related to dropping your phone because if it were then why all of this is happening now, it should have been happened earlier. Could be because of a malware. A soft reset will do the work.
It seems to be slightly damaged by dropping.
Send it to Samsung service and they will fix it for you.

Basically this should have been posted in the i9001 Q&A here, as there was a BUG in some Roms in i9001 that caused such behavior for which there is a patch, to resolve
sorry my memory is running out: due to age. try asking there for correct response.
