In a couple of threads I've seen references to changing or restoring your "device ID". Did a search and couldn't find anything. What is this and how do you do it?

Basically it's a problem with froyo ROMs. Our phones have unique device ID. Froyo ROMs have the same device id for each device which causes market issues (i.e. downloading apps but it not being able to install often). That's why people want to change their device ID's so that their market problems are gone.
Some of the ROMs (like Cognition, perception, etc.) have random android id generator so that market issues are fixed. Alternatively, you can flash back to stock, use "Android ID changer" from market to find your device ID, flash to one of the froyo ROMs, then use the same app to change your ID.
had same problem. Unless its preventing you from installling market apps its not a big deal and nothing to worry about. If you absolutely want to modify it while on custom rom then the id changer should work. But in all most all instances ODIN one-clicks back to JF6 will restore your device id.
Want you to look at something first as you could have 2 problems. Most froyo roms will change your device id to a generic 004...#. Generally when you flash back to stock it will restore your original IMEI.
It wasn't until i had used an i9000 rom that i had the following problem. Not only was my IMEI changed....it changed my product code to a T-mobile code. What should have been SGH-I897kzaatt was showing as SGH-I897kzatmb. Even flashing stock was not restoring either IMEI or product code. Ended up having to edit binary file in efs folder but it gave me headaches. (can walk you through but want you to make sure your product code is ok first.
To check your product code the easister method is SHS Toolbox (not SGS Tools) from market.
You will need (Root Permission):
1. Install Busybox from Market
2. Install SGS Toolbox from Market.
3. Make sure you also download TERMINAL EMULATOR from market as you may need it to restore your voice and 3G connections later in process. There are 2 versions make sure you get the one with more stars.
Once you have done 1-3 run SGS Tools and select the CHECK PRODUCT CODE. Report the results back here.
I need to change my product code back... can you help?
When I had 2.1, I was able to connect to my College's exchange account, but now that I flashed 2.2 on my phone, I can't get on my email. When I go to my email via laptop, and look under my mobile settings it shows 2 Androids listed, obviously 1 is when I had 2.1 and the other my 2.2.
My problem is that on the 2.2 one, exchange says:
Device ID: Validate
whereas for my 2.1 one, exchange says:
Device ID: droid(and then a bunch of numbers)
How do I "Validate" my device ID?
Is my device ID and my Android ID one in the same?
I dl'd the Android ID Changer, and the ID it shows is completely different from what I had before, can I change it back to what it showed for 2.1 in my exchange account?

Yes you can change it back, just type in the original id and hit save.
Although if you are having issues with it being recognized on your schools email, the tech support staff at your school most likely could fix the validate issue for you a heck of a lot faster than we could since we have no control over it.

Device ID does not = Android ID
Device ID = IMEI
and should match the imei on the label under your battery
once you check your product code you are likely to see it is incorrect.
The link i am going to provide repairs the nv_data files with correct product code for your device (which in my case allowed the IMEI to be restored to original).
Your product code should be SGH-KZAATT (but is likely SGH-KZATOR or SGH-KZATMB).
Flash to stock JF6 2.1 eclair and try what worked for me if you find your product code to be incorrect.

wasn't being critical toward you sorry.
was just trying to make sure he was clear on the different ID's
but looks like he may have already used android id changer and possibly tried to modify his Android ID to his Device ID which could be a problem especially if he didn't write down his original Android ID that is used for the market/google.

Hi,
I just had a quick question regarding restoring IMEI & Product code. Im with Rogers and currently on Cog2.3b8. i have flashed a few roms already and so far my IMEI is fine and hasn't been changed. When i check the product code it shows up as I-896xxATT (Not really the code but just to give an idea.), so i know its the wrong product code for Rogers. My question is this, should i fix the product code while I'm currently on Cog? Everything is running fine and no issues. Also, if i fix the product code from my backup to the Rogers one will i have any issues??
I just basically want to know if its worth fixing the product code if everything is running fine, and what is the benefit?
Thanks.

As long as IMEI is fine, you don't need to fix the product code. Product code is just for your sake. As long as you know what product it is, it should be fine.. (until u sell your phone)
Thank you!
I guess ill leave it be for now. I finally got everything running great, no ATT logo on boot, No SMS timestamp problems, so i just wont mess around with it.
I guess if i ever flash to a stock Rogers rom, or go back to stock before flashing a rom for whatever reason, i can restore the correct product ID at that point.
Thanks again.
If you did want to change your PC and ensure you've got the original IMEI code, check here for instructions
sadly I dont have backup of the files before flashing
I can access data, but I cannot make\ receive phone calls or messages.
please help as this is my only phone?
not sure if I can revert to an older rom, and which one to pick up.
I got mine on orange UK.
Are you saying that you don't know your IMEI?
1. check your invoice when you ordered the device (mine stated my IMEI).
2. login to orange uk website to manage your account and surf around, my IMEI was also listed in there
Or that you don't know how to change it?
1. What ROM are you running?
2. There is a secret code you can type into your dialer which will simultaneously do a factory reset and change your IMEI. Search the forums for this.
I remember reading somewhere on here that if you flash back to FroYo it will reinstate your IMEI number.
Perhaps use JPU 2.2.1
Hope it helps ;-)
flash with odin and done

thanks for all your help.
I kept searching really desperatly to find if I kept a backup of
nv_data.bin
and indeed I did! so now I got it restored
however since upgrading to ICS, I cannot use my o2 sim card is there anyway to unlock the phone on ICS?
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I got this unit, relatively cheaply, in china. I realised it was rooted on two items: superuser was installed, and when keeping the start button depressed it came up with some chinese menu for shutdown, even though the os language was set to english.
I could set up my google account without problems, but i couldnt access the market. It was as if they used a short cut with an android market icon. Having said that, when i went to the market website online, i couldnt sign in on that. My non rooted htc phone has no problems accessing the market.
Interestingly, when i connected to wifi it popped up a softwarenudate notification, which it couldnt download due to absence of a SIM card (i didnt put my sim card in it yet)
Any thoughts/comments/suggestions?
What is your usage location?
what version of ROm you have? (setting - about phone)
you have to see there
baseband version ?
Build version?
Kernel version ?
Right, i managed to get the market working by performing a factory reset.
Baseband version=N7000XXKJ6
Kernel=2.6.35.7-N7000ZSKK1-CL706440
Build=GINGERBREAD.ZSKK1
Right now i found that the problems i ave with this build, is that any firmware updates cannot be installed (i get a registration error message, and yes, i did register the unit with samsung).
It also contains several chinese apps that i cannot uninstall and are a nuisance.
One is called 360-something (its in chinese which i dont read), another one is called Gexin. Both apps actually report new messages.
There is also a QQ security app running (i know QQ is very popular in asia).
Ideally id like to have a UK or US original firmware, so i can update to ICS when it comes out in the next month or so. But a modified US orUK rom would probably do as well if necessary.
You can get all available ROM here

download my guide from signature (last link), if any assistance need to update ROM

Read this forum
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/177988-noob-guide-rooting-flashing-using-mac.html
Well am not sure about this forum. i read that Odin is not available for Mac. So please read carefully before flashing
My phone specs are:
Model Number: LG-P925
Android Version: 2.3.5
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7+
Build Number: GRJ90
Software Version: LGP925-V20p-FEB-22-2012
So it used this nice guide to root my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975933
I then had to use this guide to install ClockworksMod because it seams that nothing comes easy on this phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257588
I loaded the stable version of cyanogen for the LG Thrill and it starts up and runs, but the problem is that I get no network connection, when i try to import contacts I get "No vCard file found", and my phone says that my IMEI is unknown.
I have looked around and seen that it may be because i have a bad file in EFS, but i have no idea where to find this so called EFS folder.
Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated, and try to keep the explanations at a low level because I only started doing all this stuff yesterday so i have a limited understanding on what is actually going on.
And I have tried to do the following steps:
1. Connect phone by USB
2. Activate USB debug mode
3. Enter 3845#*920# in dialer if that doesn’t work try 3845#*925#
4. Select Port Settings -> Select CP Image Download
5. A new device should appear at let it install
6. Open Tutty and select serial protocol. Click on open
7. Type AT if response is not OK, change port number (it is possible that when typing you don’t see any letters)
But i cant get past step 3, because entering either of those two doesnt do anything on the phone. I'm assuming because those are specific for Gingerbread, but when i re-install gingerbread and try these again Tutty doesnt open when i select serial protocol, it just gives me an error.
Ha, i found my problem. I dont have a baseband, it comes up as unknown. Did a little reading and found that "he baseband is the subsystem of the phone that controls radio communications. It's a chipset on the phone that directly controls cellular hardware and communications with cell towers."
Well now i just need to figure out how to get it on the phone and which one to use.
Edit:
Ya I'm still having problems i can't get any of the ROM's to work. I was stupid and didn't save Nandroid backup so i cant even go back to what i had before. I tried going back to the standard P925 ROM but it still didnt recognize the SIM. When i try the P920 ROM the SIM is recognized, but all the text is shifted so i cant read most of anything.
Any help would be much appreciated
Get thrill seeker 3.0 or higher I'm on 3.0 not the greatest rom but works

Need a solution badly.."Invalid IDevice ID must be a valid IMEI or MAC address."
"Invalid ID:
Device ID must be a valid IMEI or MAC address. Without device ID, some Mi Account and Cloud features won't be available."
then it goes for checking device status
Followed by this error:
Couldn't check the Find device status.
What l had done.
A month ago my mi3 started showing "insert sim card" though there was already one in the mobile, i thought that this because of newly "weekly update" but after next update it didn't solved, so i searched for the problem on google and this forum and i found that this problem is hardware one. So i went to the expert, he checked and said that the sim tray is running fine. Then again i waited for an update and it arrived but then again it didn't solved.
Finally i applied "Wipe & Reset" and came the disaster, miui 8 started in fashion but while i was in some elementary steps of selecting language and country I was encountered with this error--
"Invalid ID:
Device ID must be a valid IMEI or MAC address. Without device ID, some Mi Account and Cloud features won't be available."
and I finally stopped at MIUI ACCOUNT Details form.
Followed by this error:
Couldn't check the Find device status.
I reset it several times but the outcome is nil.
I even tried Flashing using Mi pc suite with "miui V7.5.6.0.MXDCNDE" it does nothing and repeated again and again except changing miui 8 (6.7) developer to miui 7.5 stable.
I have no EFS saved
Current status.
phone not opening competely, no debugging option on, no root access.
Is there anyone who can help and guide me.
If you have not tried fastboot, then give it a try. And after it boots try to skip all the MI authentication steps. I think Mi framework is checking something and then giving you error.
Try flashing an old backup. I had the same issue but on pa 6.0(unofficial) or flash a cm rom and see if the problem exists.
There are modules for XPOSED that will allow you to force an IMEI or change various device ID information, you'll be good
