Notion Ink Adam Pre-Order starts later today, anyone else temped? - Nook Color General

$375 base price up to $550 with a trans-reflective display and 4g. I'm really tempted to return the nook and pre-order the Adam. I've been interested in it since it was first announced.
Dual core NVIDIA Tegra2, the transflective display (Pixel Qi), 185 degree swivel camera, HDMI port, connectivity options, storage options, and Adobe Air and Flash support.
Even $499 for the Pixel Qi display is probably worth while. If I remember right, it's a 10" tablet.
Thoughts?

Definately wouldn't get it without the Pixel-Qi screen - as the regular LCD is most likely NOT IPS, so the quality is going to be unknown (random). I think Pixel-Qi is supposed to be quite good.
Any hard specs about the size, weight, resolution, ports, etc? I couldn't even see if it's running Android - looks like it's Linux + Skin (Eden)

I think it's Android 2.2 with heavy customization, they are comparing it to 3.0? I'm not entirely sure. There's isn't a comprehensive list of specs for it yet as far as I know, hopefully as the pre-order kicks in there will be more details. For $125 more than the NC I will jump at it, and likely jump at the Pixel Qi screen instead of the standard LCD at $499.

I wouldn't go anywhere near that thing yet. Nobody has ever seen a physical device yet (not even a video).

thats just crazytalk. check the blog. its there. videos a plenty from CES a year ago. i wrote about it here if you care to see.
im preordering in about 1 minute.

I've been following it's development pretty closely and there's no doubt it's a sexy device. I kept having an internal dispute between me really wanting all the specs/ features in the Adam vs me really wanting a 7 inch tablet. Luckily for me the $50 price hike on the wifi only pixel qi just knocked it out of my price range. I'll be watching closely to see how it fares against the Q1 tablets that are going to rain down like hellfire. Good luck Adam Tablet.

The Pricing
If you remember I explained that it’s possible that we would be able to cut the price of one of the variants further. So here is the confirmation! You know we have 6 variants : LCD (wi-fi only), LCD + 3G -900 series, LCD + 3G -850 series, Transflective (Wi-Fi only), Transflective + 3G -900 series, Transflective + 3G -850 series.
Earlier we told you that the first version will start at $399. But now the LCD Wi-Fi version will start at $375.33 and 3G version at $425.33 (for limited period?). Transflective version (Pixel Qi) will start at $499.45 for Wi-Fi only and 3G variants at $549.99 (2 variants in 3G, 900 series and 850 series which takes the variant numbers to 6!). (For specifications please see our website).

Pixel qi was originally supposed to be $50 more than the $399 model. So while the cheapest model is cheaper, and there is suddenly two more models, the pixel qi is more expensive than initially announced.
"In SlashGear’s extensive look at the Notion Ink Adam tablet we’ve all been waiting for, their tipster has purportedly confirmed pricing and a launch window. There will be an LCD version with WiFi only that will cost $399.99, $449.99 for the 3G model + LCD or for WiFi only + Pixel Qi display, and $498 for the Pixel Qi + 3G version. The tablet will be available either December of this year or Q1 of 2011, depending on testing and FCC approval." From August 12th

The device from CES was basically a LCD in a case with the NVidia Tegra 2 development board!
I think I'll wait for the device to become available and fully evaluated before ordering.

The blog doesn't have a search function. But it's a pretty nice collection of info.
Found the 3G elsewhere... and it isn't very intuitive either, unless you're familiar with GSM frequencies. Need to look at the version numbers. One's a 850 - ATT the other's a 900 - rest of the world.
No any other USA providers.

Yeah, AT&T only kills the 3G for me, though I don't think I would ever use it anyways.
Hmm, to return the nook and wait for Adam reviews, or to keep the nook and...I don't know. Wish they had sent out demo units to reviewers.

I waited all year but after tasting sthe sweet IPS screen of the Nook Color and iPad, I have no use for it. I'm looking forward to a MeeGo tablet some time next year though. If they can get that Clear Black Display Amoled on it then I'm sold.

I don't know, i'm really excited about Meego, but I have a nokia N900. Unless they have some kind of android emulation built into it, i'm going to stick to a an OS that has commercial development. I love what the community has done for the N900 but I would have loved to have seen some decent games for it.

Does anyone know the difference between the 850 and 900 series of 3G? Does it depend on where you plan to use it or are the supporting multiple mobile carriers?

I don't want us N900 owners to hijack this thread. I believe that you should use the right tool for the job. Some days my iPad is best for something, some days my Mac or Linux laptops are best. N900 plays all Palm WebOS games. I also dual boot my N900 with Froyo. If a sexy, viable MeeGo tablet comes along I will definitely buy it. I don't believe in sticking to a single OS like a religion.

I agree. We're certainly on the same side. Heh, we'll make this the last n900 post then, unless you have something to else add. The dual-boot option is pretty nifty. I prefer to keep my amount of devices down to a minimum, but i'm in no way tied to one OS. I think in the long run i'd like android as a tablet for gaming/reading and I will probably get a Meego phone.

I will probably get one the end of january if the reviews are good! But the specs look magnificent

It would appear this is being sold without any official carrier support. Just stick your SIM card in, configure the APN and on you go.

Nook Color vs. Galaxy Tab?

Has anyone spent a good amount of time with both a rooted Nook Color and the Galaxy Tab who can write some impressions on how they compare in regular use? The $350 difference is dictating that I go Nook Color, but it's always fun to hear comparisons before buying...
BertoJG said:
I have the NC, Archos 70, and VS tablet right now, and the color is by far the best screen.
The VS device lasted all of an hour before I decided that I am returning it tomorrow, it is that bad even with custom roms. The screen is bad, the unit is heavy, and I decided the 7 inch size is my favorite.
The Archos running froyo is very buggy, only has 256mb of ram, and has wifi issues at this point and feels like I could break it by looking at it too hard.
The color is the best display, has plenty of ram, and feels very solid. We just need a good rom and it should fly!

I was wondering more in comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but that's cool too.
Oh scrap. I can't read.

Two of my coworkers got a Tab. It is definitely better than the Nook Color - it's running Android 2.2 out of the box, the screen is as excellent as the Nook's, and it's got 3G, gps, bluetooth, and a camera (if those things are important to you).
It's also snappier as it has a slightly faster chip. It is thicker than the Nook Color though.
The biggest difference is that you can pretty much buy 2 Nook Colors for 1 Tab.
If you want the full Android 2.2 experience and the $300+ price difference is not a factor, then yeah get a Tab.
i only tested a display and i was blown away by the experience. all the goodness of the nook (great screen, sturdy hardware, 512MB of ram) with the performance of the archos 70 (much snappier than the nook-but not as fast as the galaxy).
i'm very much considering returning both the nook and archos 70 and just getting the galaxy tab. i only need one (other) tablet anyways.
The point is, how is the potential of the NC with a custom ROM?
With a fine software many think that the NC will perform almost as good as the Tab...
Time will tell.
I think it will.... Roms do make a HUGE difference with these type of devices. Let's hope someone get one out soon.

I wasn't too impressed with the Galaxy Tab when compared to the Nook Color. I don't need 3G, bluetooth or a camera because my phone has all of that. I've played with the Galaxy Tab in a store here in Finland and it's quite thick as well.
The Nook Color is thinner and than my iPad but with the same resolution screen and more dots per inch.
The cost is another issue. The Galaxy Tab is over 800euro over here yet the Nook Color came to under 300 euro including 23% local import tax and shipping service cost. I would have bought the Galaxy Tab if the price wasn't so ridiculous.

800 euro... that's 1050 USD. Here you pick up the Galaxy at the store for 600 USD, some 450 Euro.
Gotta love the CHEAP US of A!
I think we need to be a bit honest with ourselves here. Let us cut to the chase, the Galaxy Tab is a better device than the NC. It is more capable out of the box because of the hardware it carries, and as good as the Nook Color is, lack of hardware features can never be made up by the best ROM in the world.
This does not mean the Nook Color is a bad device. It is a great device, in its price range.
To me, the Nook is not a competitor to the Galaxy Tab. The Tab is a BMW. The Nook Color is a sturdy Ford, both good - but two different devices that do not compete with each other.
A buyer interested in a Galaxy Tab will not consider a Nook Color (as a Android tablet) just like a Nook Color buyer will not consider a Galaxy Tab. The price differential is just too big.
There is much to like about both devices, but comparing them, IMO, is apples to oranges - and a mismatch from the get-go.
Keep in mind who makes the Tab
Like so many others I heard about the Samsung Behold 2 and how those customers got screwed but got a Samsung Vibrant anyway. And like so many others I found out the GPS is borked. And the battery life is poor. At least I didn't experience the lag problem, but I returned it.
And watched for the not-really-promised GPS fix. Which finally came and...didn't work. I really liked the screen and wanted to like the phone, but if the phone can't do what was advertised up front, forget it.
And Samsung on Android 2.3 on their S9000 series of phones (e.g. Vibrant)? Their statement sounded like "Maybe someday if we feel like it and there is a strong tailwind we might think about it but no promises". Maybe the phone is a dead end, maybe it isn't, but based on Samsung's performance so far, I wouldn't count on it. It doesn't have 2.2 yet. My phone (MT4G) came with it, my wife's (DX) got an OTA.
To me this says the Samsung Tab is absolutely out. You'd have to practically give me one to get me to take it. Same for the Nexus S.
The Nook, right now, is not fully tabletized, but that's a matter of software. It has a fabulous screen and seems reasonable in many ways. It is far cheaper than any of its competition (as a tablet). I find it stylish and I could actually imagine reading books on it (I know, what am I thinking?). And my wife is irate that I'm considering it so soon after she got me an Air.
So, is there a Plex controller that is worthwhile for Android tablets? That'd go a LONG way toward getting approval from the missus.
I agree. Samsung has never supported their devices well, and they still insist on using proprietary cables and connectors on everything. On top of that, they went ahead and did everything I dislike about apple by releasing the galaxy tab at that price. They are not even trying to compete with the Ipad, they are just assuming that everyone who wants an android tablet will shell out the big bucks to buy it, the same way apple fans will shell out the big bucks to buy anything made by apple. I'm sure it's a good device, it's gotten great reviews - I just don't like the way they went about it.
My wife told me after I got the NC that she was going to get me a Tab for Christmas. I'm glad I got the NC, I would have had to return the Tab! Too many features in the Tab that I just won't use. The only thing it has that I wish the NC had, is the slightly faster processor (800MHz vs 1GHz.)
Besides the hardware differences, it's a Samsung. They aren't known for providing updates in a timely manner and support on their devices. Sure, we don't know about the NC's status in that respect, but I also don't really care given it's price point. Whatever the development community does is fine by me!
But as was already said, you aren't comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to a fruit basket. It's got more, it's different, and it's more money. I'm fine with apples.

While we're talking about Samsung's business tactics that leave a sour taste in your mouth, two things come to mind:
- apparently they turned down Google's proposal for them to name the eventual Nexus S the Nexus 2 because "we're not #2 in anything." Wow. Surely someone is making a year-end list of "biggest douchebag quotes of the year" right about now - please note this one.
- I'd sacrifice my first-born if the reason for the delay until "after the holidays" for the wifi-only Tab was because of production delays. Either the carriers threw money at them to delay it, or it's just more profitable for them to sell 3g models, so they delayed it (or both). The irony is, I'd more strongly consider a Tab if a $450 wifi model was available now.
It would be closer if the Nook Color had Bluetooth, that way you could use a Bluetooth GPS, headsets, etc...
...but someone posted in another topic that Bluetooth might be there just "hidden", maybe in a custom ROM ?

About the Galaxy Tab, I've played with it for about an hour. My opinion is that it is laggy and definitely doesn't worth the ~600 euros that is its price here in Greece.

The processor chipset (?) is supposed to include bluetooth. It's assumed it wasn't activated due to licensing costs for bluetooth, so it's there, just not used and may be "unlocked" by a rom.
I've both. NC cannot compare to the Galaxy Tab in user experience.
You just get a much better polished experience with the tab on everything. Tab's gpu is almost 10x faster in polygon count. CPU is faster (even with SetCPU set at performance on NC). Everything just works on the Tab.
That said, I am considering returning my Tab because of all the new tablets coming out in a few months, and the price. NC could hold me over for a few months.

Do you know if the hardware GPU is better than the NC or is just based on current software of Tab vs NC? I've done a lot of research into the nook color, but I admit, graphics wise it's still a bit of a mystery to me.

My small review of the Streak 7

Those of you who are considering buying the Streak 7 are welcome to read my small personal review.
After reading all the horrible reviews from various blogs i had to go to T-mobile and see if it is really THAT bad....
After using it for about 3 days now i can certainly say that it is NOT that bad at all and i actually enjoy this tablet more than i enjoyed the Galaxy Tab.
I'll start with the good:
1) It is FAST and smooth. It is certainly faster than the Galaxy Tab (i had the at&t version). it is very responsive to touch and switching tasks. there is really zero lag here.
2) Quadrant is around 1900+/- which is not bad out of the box.
3) seems like it is being capped at 60fps (improvement from old streak which was capped at 30fps)
4) The browser is absolutely smooth and fast, unlike the Galaxy Tab's browser which is laggy and was the Tab's main fault (even after the recent leaked firmwares from Samsung where they fixed some of the browser issues). Flash plays very smoothly on this device.
5) It plays XVID out of the box (i tested a normal xvid file, not any HD content and it plays it with the built in player)
6) The speakers are one of the best i have heard. they sound much better than the galaxy Tab.
7) I bought the dock for it from the T-Mobile store. it enables full screen mirroring via HDMI and it does it very well. The Galaxy Tab HDMI out is very disappointing as its HDMI out is extremely blurry and poor.
8) I can make phone calls with it using a Google Voice account + Spidroid from the market. i can receive and make calls using the wired headset no problem and it works well over 3g/4g and Wifi (I'll write a guide later on how to do it).
9) Build quality is more than satisfactory, i just wish i could remove the DELL logo from the back
10) The 5Mpx camera is fine, though not amazing.
11) The tablet is Quad Band WCDMA (which is extremely rare). once we can unlock it i am moving this to at&t
12) Unlike what other people say, it has 512MB RAM with 364MB user accessible (which is NORMAL).
13) Very good GPS. i get instant locks and it is super stable.
14) Overall it is very stable for me with 95 apps installed.
The bad and not so bad:
1) The screen resolution is only 800x480 but its NOT THAT BAD. I agree that higher resolution would look better though.
2) Viewing angle is not that great, but again this is a 7'' tablet. you would normally be looking straight at it (unlike a 10'' tablet).
3) The colors are not very deep, but its not that bad really.
4) Battery life is disappointing BUT i have isolated the cause. It is the 3G radio that is killing it. If you put the tab into airplane mode and only use wifi you will see great improvement. Let's hope Dell will release a new radio which is more battery friendly. Initially i thought it was the screen, but it seems to be the radio.
5) Some apps and games wont load properly or crash. This is due to Tegra as these games and apps needs to be updated to use arm v7 (i.e. gameloft games, splashtop remote, super stunt car). 90% of my apps work fine though.
6) T-Mobile absolutely refuses to unlock it for me. They say they have an exclusive deal with Dell on the tablet and that's why they are not offering an unlock code. Shame because it is Quad Band WCDMA!!!
7) Camera flash is a bit of a joke. it is very weak.
Overall i am happy with the Tablet and i enjoy it more than i enjoyed the Galaxy Tab mainly because of the excellent browser, system speed and full HDMI out which i use often.
Is there a chance that you try to swap the Streak 7 screen with Tab's one?
Im still going to take mine back Today
I agree with everything you have said and I also love the price point. A tablet is a go between a phone and a laptop. No way should someone pay $300 plus for a tablet. I don't like that when I go to landscape mode all of my widgets get elongated and some of the writing is cut off.
this is a cool tablet and i am happy to have spent the money on it.
300.00 for case, tablet, car and home charger, and screen protector was less than i planned to pay

$300? How ya figure? Retail is $449...unless you go with 2 year contract. Then it's $199, plus $25/mo minimum over 2 years...
So, in actuality it's $199 + $600 = $799 (+accessories) . Not a good deal on contract IMO.

You are adding the price of having mobile service to the price of the device. Subtract your $600 from $449 and you come out with $150 for two years of mobile service. And thats pretty good.

Good, if you don't have a cell phone maybe. Why these tablets get tied to carriers is beyond me. With wifi on the tablet, I can just create a hotspot with my 4g Phone, and connect that way.
I'm just saying, it's marked up in price to make a contract more appealing to commit to. Better marketing would price this out around $300 off contract. Doubt Dell / T-Mobile will be selling very much of these...subpar product overpriced.
Awesome review, thanks man! Have been thinking about picking one of these up.
I'm really loving it so far. You can't believe everything you ready. The screen resolution isn't a big deal to me. Looks fine. The battery could be better but like it so far.

[Q] Is P1000 still worth buying TODAY?

I'm looking for a Tab, but Transformer seems to big for me. P1000 is the perfect size, but it is pretty old device. Is it still worth buying today?
Thanks.
If you think 7" tablet is a perfect size for you then why not, the Galaxy tab is only 1 year old and it still stands against any other alternatives out in the market today.
I would hardly say just because the tablet is "pretty old" that it isn't a good purchase. It's well supported by developers and the fact that people are still purchasing it... Its a solid working and built piece of kit.
You won't be disappointed.
I would say that they are definitely still worth it. The price point alone is a great reason. You can get a Galaxy tablet for less than half the price of many of the newest tabs.
It's already been shown that these models are capable of running the new firmwares. There are ports of Honeycomb out there already, and though there are still some issues to be ironed out, they work pretty well. Since installing a 2.3.4 rom on my vzw tab, I've been very impressed with how responsive and cleanly it runs.
Having handled some of the newer and larger tablets, I've found that the smaller size is really more ideal to me personally. I can fit my Galaxy tablet in my pocket. My folks for example both have iPads, and they are just much larger and bulkier devices. You can't drop one in your pocket real quick while you are out on the run.

Anyway, hope that helps!

I live in eastern europe and here the tab's price is almost the same as Transformer's. And that one has Tegra 2 and a nice 10.1' IPS display. They are both here 540 USD / 380 EUR. I tried Iconia A500 Tab, but I was quite disappointed - it was very heavy, typing text while trying to hold with one hand was challenging. The OS and that big display sure looks great, but for now I can't see my self taking this out in the street while walking, or chatting (IM) while sitting in the bus on my way college. How much is the P1000 in the US? Or UK?

In the UK, the P1000 (if you can find any in stock) still goes for around £399 and the P1010 is currently in bestbuy/currys for £299.
But search on ebay or other sites, you can find one for a lot cheaper. I got mine brand new from ebay for £250 (P1000).
Of course, these will probably fall in price when newer alternatives comes out but for now, they are holding its value as they are still popular and people are buying them.
I just bought one today. So far I am happy with it.
I have seen the US models selling new for between $150-200 when you buy from a mobile provider. For example, I know Verizon was selling them earlier this year for $200 when you agreed to a two year service agreement. I've also seen the WiFi only tablets for $350. Personally, I was willing to sign a contract, because having the 3g data access was something I desired.
But, I would do as one of the other posters suggested, and check ebay. As I understand it, you can buy a US model and put a European firmware on it. I would double check that though, as I don't want to tell you something I am not entirely sure of.
Got mine a month ago in aussie land, on a 12 month contract. 0 dollars for the tab and $39 a month for the plan with 8g of data and I get 3 months of the plan for free. Was really happy with that price.
Got mine in Italy for 300 Eur. Best purchase of the year: perfect balance between pocketability and readability, and with Gingerbread it is lag free and quick.
Rumours are that Samsung is going to present a revamped 7" tablet w/ upgraded cpu and amoled screen. I won't upgrade unless it has usb host or otg, which is the feature I miss much on my Tab.

Nothing wrong with the P1000. Good support is important. Even if it's a year old it still beats an ipad. Good resolution and speed, and very complete. Very sturdy, durable Gorilla glass.

If 7" tablet is your preference, get a HTC Flyer or Huawei Ideos Slim?
Unless u want the voice call/sms capabilities

Any Samsung official reading this would love to put usb otg and make you upgrade
While for me, I ll try not to upgrade, but the amoled screen might tempt me.

I bought mine last month, and I love it. My pocket is not that big to fit in the tab, so I bought a small bag to bring around. I was confused whether buying Galaxy S (for super amoled and small factor) or Galaxy Tab (for bigger screen to read ebooks). Well, its worth buying
I bought one a couple of weeks ago, and am very happy so far. Yes, it's a year old - but the screen is very good (much better than alternative 7" tablets'), it's relatively cheap & there's lots of development going on with it.
The next 7" from Samsung is set to have an AMOLED screen & will probably be dual-core, which will be awesome, but I wanted something now & wasn't prepared to 1) wait & 2) pay much more than I did...
Make sure you root & stick Overcome ROM on it! It becomes a different animal once you do!
Got an Asus Transformer for the home/travel, but day to day chucking in pocket (albeit large pockets), still love the Tab. Got it for 200bucks so can't complain.
If I had to pay full price? I think I'd skip, for that price a newer 7" tablet would still be preferred.
Main thing it comes down to though is where are you, and do you need voice? if so, Tab might still be perfect for you.
It's a good question to ask here, as the answer isn't obvious. Without a tablet, I would, if I had the cash, get the Tab again. It's portability still makes it a winner for me.
Waiting for the next model is ok, but... these things always seem to take 6months longer than initially planned it appears.
Thee galaxy pad still a good tab/phone. its fast, not to big and have a lot of apps/games that works so...
Galaxy tab worth to buy.why?
The best tablet for 7 inch tablet.
Equiped with microsd, simcard for mms,sms,3g and telephone
the best size to carry around even easily beat ipad
Development of Custom rom and stock rom are always up to date
unless samsung release new 7 inch tablet with dual core processor and amoled sceen
then it is not worthy anymore to purchase
When I got the P1000, my standard in speed and responsiveness on android began to change. I began to compare the Qualcomm chipset based androids vs. the Hummingbird of Samsung. The P1000 (and the original Galaxy S Plus which runs the same thing) is really good and even better can match the next gen Qualcomm. See how the original Galaxy S graphics even beats the Galaxy S Plus (newer release), is because of the same speedy setup done before.
The P1000 is a very good device. Really crazy why Samsung shortchanged many unknowing people as they downgraded the P1010 with an inferior chipset and graphics.
Is there already a dual core 7" as good as the P1000? The Dell Streak 7 besides abit more massive has a problem with batt life. Archos I didn't bother to consider. Is there anymore? The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is coming out better (dunno when), but it is not 7". Nothing compares that I know... for now.
I've only had mine for about a week, I bought it second hand for a great price and I love it so far. I use it more than my laptop and my Asus Transformer. I LOVE the size. The 10" tabs you pretty much need to use both hand to hold it all the time, the G.Tab easily in 1. Plus being able to type with both thumbs instead of finger pecking is a HUGE plus.
Yeah, the Galaxy Seven will probably be out in a couple months but if you need one now then it's a great little tab.
I was at the shop today again, played with XOOM and again with Galaxy Tab. Damn its size is just perfect and the screen so detailed and feels high quality. But then I tried to do what I do on My N900 (Maemo 5 OS), and WOW :O IT CAN NOT MULTITASK. I never noticed that! You can not have skype online and browse the web while listening to music. I asked the guy at the shop. He confirmed, just some can "run in the background" but there is no task switcher... Maybe you can make it multitask? On iOS i have backgrounder and Kirikae and it works like a charm, can you do the same on android?
Skype online while browsing the web and listening to music? won't the sound conflict?

What to buy? Galaxy Note or Asus Transformer Prime?

My current cell phone is the Nexus 1. I'm rooted and running the latest stable version of Cyanogen mod. My phone has a constant alert regarding memory running low and it gets really slow at times. Battery life is good, but my charge plug is a little broken (usb cable falls out if you shake it around while plugged in).
My dilemma is on what to buy...
I love the specs, size, upgradability, and stylus that the Note has to offer. The Note is a huge upgrade from the Nexus 1, but at the same time I really want a tablet. I mainly use my nexus 1 to watch movies and play games. I barley use it to actually make a phone call or browse the internet. I think a tablet would make this experience much more enjoyable compared to the Note, but at the same time the screen on the note is so large that maybe it would be acceptable enough for my needs...
I can always use my nexus 1 to make phone calls and returns txts while using the Transformer prime to watch movies, play games, and surf the web via tethering, but I can't carry the Transformer with me everywhere I go like I could with a Galaxy Note.
To those with the Note. Is it a suitable device for gaming and movie watching? Would you prefer to use a tablet for these tasks or is the Note surprisingly comparable?
There are other factors involved as well. I'm on T-Mobile and will only have 2g if I get the Note. The Note is also ~$700 off contract compared to the Transformer which is $500 and would be able to tether off my 3g HSPA Nexus 1.
I have a bunch of trade offs and I'm having trouble deciding what will be best. I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
I was wondering the same thing and ideally I'd like to try them both in person to make that decision but I may end up getting both. They are both the most innovative of their respective form factors IMO.
Reading Amazon reviews among others you see people saying they use their other devices including tablets to a far lesser extent now that they have the SGNote so it might seem logical to consider it first if you're on a tight budget but I still find it hard to believe it could replace the Asus Transformer Prime especially with its dock when not highly mobile.
Good luck & let us know what you decide..
---------- Post added at 04:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:01 PM ----------
BTW I doubt I would consider the SGNote for T-Mobile, 2G is too slow IMO.
Its pretty suitable for movie watching, I just bought this phone as my portable media device but I think the transformer prime would give a better over all experience as the screen is bigger, the only realy benefit SAMOLED gives is deeper blacks.

Sounds right, curious if the SAMOLED's less than natural colors ever bothers you, they seem to bother me on the lower resolution SAMOLED phones but a bit less on the same res but lower pixel density Tab 10.1 screen (I prefer Transformer's IPS for a tablet)? -Thx
Hello,
I have an iPad 1 at home as well as a SG Note. So I'd say I could help you with your little dilemma
Actually I have to say that watching a movie with 5.3'' screen is not that comfortable. So if you really want to watch movies in first place I'd tell you to buy the Transformer Prime.
On the other hand you have your phone always with you so you could watch movies or series whenever wherever - as you said you won't have the Prime always with you.
But since I bought the Note my iPad lies at home nearly all the time not being used much - the Note is big enough to surf on the internet and movies are watchable as well - even though its not as comfortable as it is using the iPad.
But you have to think about the battery life as well; even though the Note has an awesome battery life, watching movies will kill your battery pretty fast....
So - to come to a conclusion - best is to buy both but the Note will be more useful since you'll always have your phone with you!
Let me know about your final decision
why not wait for the asus padfone, best of both worlds. at the moment, its still using a tegra 3 quad core 1.5ghz chip with 1gb ram and 12 cuda core gpu.
Why not pick up an evo view (sprint's version of the flyer) for under $250. 7" screen, 32gb on board. Screen is nice and bright. I ditched all my other tablets outside of the touchpad and pretty much carry it everywhere. Should be getting honeycomb soon which will bring more functionality to the scribe pen too.

I do like that Asus is not afraid to innovate but I'm not sold on the Padfone's compromises & rumored price point ($800-$1000), if something happens to your phone the tablet becomes a paperweight.
I think the slim Transformer Prime with its battery-port extending slim keyboard is more innovative without compromises at competitive pricepoints. Redundancies in hardware+cloud based software-data should work well unless the budget is tight and user is willing to accept compromises in form & function.
I still would enjoy a projector in my handheld like the Samsung Beam but I don't think it ever made it out of Singapore but let see what happens at the next CES & MWC..
New information regarding a Google Tablet within the next 6 months just came out today. This definitely makes me lean more toward the note right now. Anyone using it on T-Mobile's network? How is the 2G?
Screw it! I decided to go with the note. I should have it delivered it my door tomorrow (I love amazon prime).
I'm going to stick with tmobile for now. If the 2G gets to be unbearable then I'll suck it up and cancel my plan and move to AT&T.
Thanks everyone for their replies in this thread.

If Google didn't buy Motorola they should have backed Asus with their innovative Transformer Prime. They are using Samsung for its Nexus line so they should support the Transformer Prime more, maybe Asus could have hit their target dates better. Their tablet market share is still not taken seriously vs their dominant smartphone market share.
2012 looks like it will offer higher res tablet displays than currently available. SGNote has same 1280 x 800 res as Transformer Prime which is enough for the web but graphics will benefit from higher res.
How often are you in Wi-Fi?, why put up with 2G-what are you paying at T-Mobile?
Good luck & upload a YouTube video with your experience if you can..
A Google backed Asus tablet would be a dream come true for me.
I'm almost always around wi-fi so I'm not really concerned with the 2g. I had accidentally disabled 3g on my Nexus 1 some months back and it took me about a month to notice. My monthly bill with t-mobile is about $80 per phone (3 smart phones on the family plan), but I actually have a special deal where I get more minutes and cheaper data from being a loyal customer (15+ years) for the price of a lesser plan.
My brother was about to cancel his plan (he's on my family plan) to get the Galaxy Nexus on verizon, but they offered him a $4.99 Galaxy S II to stay. He took the offer. That level of customer service is not something I dont really want to leave. My line is due for an upgrade next November which should be right around the time the new quad-core phones are being released (and a new nexus maybe), so I'm going to try and wait it out.

It had been expected but now it's official..unclear how such a deal would have affected the SGNote for you but there were rumors that T-Mobile may abandon the US market if the deal did not go through. T-Mobile is $ 4 Billion dollars wealthier so I doubt it will happen soon & they have time to reassess.
If you are mostly on Wi-Fi as am I it won't be the same issue but it'll likely annoy you when you're not obviously.
Let us know how you like it..
Yea, I will definitely post my feelings on it. I'm sure there are other Tmo guys out there wondering if its worth the loss of 3G, but something interesting about the AT&T merger news is that part of the deal if it didnt go through was that TMo would get to use AT&Ts 3g bands. If this is true, and they implement it fast enough, I might have a 3G note after all.

Really-source? The following suggested the opposite (if it had gone through):

Did you get it from "Sold by Global Mobiles and Fulfilled by Amazon for $650.98 or OEM Shop for $636.90" + $3.99 overnight Prime shipping? You can still return it within 30 days for a refund minus return shipping if unsatisfied for whatever reason right?

other 7 inches less price? Work out of country

Was debating on buying the nexus 7 due to its nexus status .
2 questions.
1- there are many other 7 inch tablets for less price than 200...
sure some are no names, but is this THAT much better?
2- Planning on sending it to another country. mexico to be exact.
It should still work the same right if it connects to wifi?
thanks
Well, budget tablets are most likely going to have a slower processor, lower resolution, older version of android, etc. If these things aren't important to you/him/her, get a cheap one.
As far as Mexico, you'd need to do some research on what services work there. Play Store content and services like Google Music and Pandora are blocked in some countries. You should probably make sure even the Nexus 7 will work there. Not trying to dissuade you, but make sure you don't have surprises waiting for you.
Edit: make sure your budget tablet has a capacitive touch screen and not a resistive one. Still seeing resistive screens around for some reason and they aren't worth a dime.
yes that makes sense...
the whole point is for fiance to skype or tango to her mom over there. Important aspect is that the device doesnt have issues, and is supported. Seeing how its a nexus device, i would assume google will update it with priority if there are any issues with it. Its not like i can have her ship it back or fix anything with her so far away and not understanding anything about tech.
ill have to see what results ill have connecting to the internet over there or downloading apps from the market.. worse case is i can download everything i need and install it here before i ship it.
thanks for the advice...
check out Ainol Elf II or Aurora II
Something to keep in mind is the Nexus 7 is sold at pretty much no profit.
While those cheaper 7 inch tablets are sold at a profit. Common sense says those cheaper tablets are using considerably cheaper parts and build quality to be cheaper and profitable.
I'm pretty sure there is no sub $200 tablet that has a 1280x800 IPS display and quad core processor or even comes close. I think this really is that much better.

Yeap, I agree, the Nexus 7 is the best price for the above avg specs that are included.
$200 is stupid affordable for a tablet with these specs, you shouldn't even be considering anything else lol
There is NOTHING better for the price.
The only reason for you not to get it would be if Google Play won't work in your country, and there may even be ways around that.
I just read that Archos is releasing a new line of tablets which one or more is aimed right at the nexus 7. its rumored to be same price.
pros: it will have
-microsd card
-HDMI out
-same resolution as nexus 7
cons:
-slower processor that's not more powerful CPU or gpu wise than tegra3
-will ship will ICS....who knows when it'll get jellybean
-not likely to have huge xda developer support following like nexus7 is showing already
-was said that build quality not as good or solid as nexus 7
The only other tablet that you might want to consider is the T-Mobile branded springboard:
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones...d&cell-phone=T-Mobile-SpringBoard-Prepaid-MBB
Qualcomm MSM8260 Dual core, 1200 MHz
1200x800 (217ppi, IPS)
capacitive
1GB RAM
16GB storage
micro SD slot
micro USB
front facing 1.3MP camera, rear 5.0MP camera
4100mah battery
and obviously t-mobile 4G capable
HDMI
it is on sale right now for $250 and works with t-mobile's 4G/3G frequencies.
It is a re-branded Huawei MediaPad, and for those people that can't live without a microSD slot and HDMI out and want the option of using a SIM for data on the go this is probably the best deal out there currently.
That being said, I'm going with the Nexus 7 hand's down.
Been down the "surely the cheap tablets from China aren't that bad, right?" path before. Have a 10" Zenithink C91.
Pros:
Had cool things, like OTG & HDMI at a price well under any competitor similarly equipped.
Easy to open to get at the HW.
Cons:
The TFT screen in a tablet form SUCKS. At minimum, only consider something with a capacitive IPS screen.
I was sold an "ICS" tablet. Their version of ICS came with no support, no source, was buggy, and crashed constantly on the 512MB of RAM. Flashed the table to GB, and the experience got a whole lot better.
When these manufacturers make a new device, old devices are left to rot - no firmware updates.
Bottom Line:
Cheap tablets offer cool tricks if you can't afford the do-it-all Transformer Infinity's of the world.
But they come with no support from the manufacturer, no ability to roll your own distro, and are often oversold on their capability.
With name brand tablets being sold for a mere $200 these days, I would stick with the name brands.
The no name ones also pretty much always don't have working ics 2d gpu acceleration
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I would recommend Archos.
New product
It might be worth looking into that, they will have sizes from 7, 8, 9.7 inc
The most expensive is to be 250$
