very helpful. we should merge with the newbie tutorial
This has been posted before, but still very useful info.
Awesome thanks! A little confusing with so much info all over the place. This sticky will help a bunch of people .
Excellent to have all these in one place, thanks!
I want to say thank you for this! It has helped me a lot.
Beauty!!! Good work!!
Great work, much appreciated. Although, after reading lots and following the forums, I have a few questions:
With the one-click root app listed in the wiki, will I still need to unlock the bootloader to flash a new radio? I'm hearing great things about updating to the new radio but it's also the riskiest thing you can do with the nexus in terms of bricking danger. I'm not a TOTAL newb: I did root and mod my old G1 but the N1 is different in that it cost $350. So the stakes have changed.
I know that it's possible to one-click root and still load CM6, which I plan on doing, but in the CM6 installation instructions, it lists "update radio...if necessary." How do I even know what radio I have or if it needs updating? This all of course without unlocking bootloader, hopefully. I want to keep my warranty; I paid top dollar for this thing!
Put simply, can I update my radio successfully and safely with the "one-click root" method, and if I can't, can I load CM6 without updating the radio.
Thanks so much in advance, and I apologize for being so gun-shy.
By the way, my about phone stats:
Build: FRF91
Kernel 2.6.32.9-27227
Android version 2.2
Love froyo!
how to root N1
hello i need some help how to root my N1
Don't worry, it's easy =].
Download One-Click Root and drop the .apk on your SD card, or email it to yourself. If you go the SD card route, you will need to install ASTRO File Manager to navigate to the root application. Install One-Click Root and run it, it takes about a second and will install BusyBox and Superuser IIRC.
Congrats, you have rooted your phone! You can now install apps that need root, such as Titanium Backup, SetCPU, and many others. Try searching the market for 'Nexus One Root' and check out here for a great list of root apps.
Install ROM Manager from the Market if you want to try out other ROMs. Remember to always make backups!
Have fun!
All these assume Windows, what about OS X and Linux?
Take Apart Videos
What will you do when your phone gets crazy? yes, send the phone back to repair center if it is still under warranty. what if it is out of warranty, and it is so expensive to repair it? or there are just some tiny problems and you just want to fix it by your self? yes, you may feel impulsed to take apart your phone by yourself and figure out what the hell the problem is. if you decide to do this, here are some wonderful take apart videos that may bring you some help. The nexus one take apart video is also included:

S-Off
Hi,
This is a great sticky to have, but I have noticed it's missing out on something, and I couldn't find that despite using search on the forum. How to gain S-Off on Nexus One? Or is S-Off even required to get write access to /system partition the way it is required on some other Android devices including the Nexus One clone HTC Desire?
Rooting for Mac Users
I was also wondering about how to root if you have a Mac. Everything I see is for someone running windows and now that 2.2.1 is out the one click apps do not work. Advice?
Changing Splash Screen
Hi,
I wanted to change the default 'X' splash screen on nexus one. I had read that S-Off is necessary for that but I am not able to find a method that works for nexus one, can someone please help?
Thanks
followed all the steps to root the nexus one and then go to the last step which is to install the .bat file.... the command prompt pulls up and says <waiting for device> it says its unlocked but the apps needing root privileges says the device isnt rooted could someone please help me!?
i am running off the manual 2.3.3 update if that matters.
thanks for the info helped me alot.
This is outdated. I have Android OS 2.3.4 and from what I have read around root is only possible when downgraded. Please post a new video showing how to root N1 with 2.3.4.
Oh and try to keep the music on the low this time?
Does my Nexus One need to be S-OFF?
I am in the process of trying to install a new ROM (Cyanogen).
My N1 is unlocked and rooted. But I cant seem to get far. My research & understanding is that I need S-OFF
Currently it is -- NEXUSONE PVT SHIP S-ON
This article doesnt concur http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700673
(now closed so I can't continue this thread)
I am now using ROM Manager premium but still cant get a new ROM installed.
Help?
The N1 is different from most phones. S-OFF is not needed to make the necessary changes to flash the bootloader, radio, recovery, or the system partition. So continue on with the next steps (which is to probably flash a custom recovery, then boot into that and flash CM and gapps).
If you stick with ROM Manager, flash the custom recovery, and then reboot and make sure it is there... then boot back into Android and use ROM Manager to flash CM (make sure you check the gapps box).
Hi,
today i gonna get my N1 and i want to intsall MIUI because i have very good experiences made with it on my old HTC HD2!
It seems to me that the installation is a bit more difficult than on my HD2.
Did i get the following things right?
1. I have to root the N1 - best made with this tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
I have installed stock froyo, so it seems a bit easier to root doesn't it?
2. I have to install a custom ROM/BUILD via native google nexus tools from SD-Card?
--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...us_One/Guides_&_Tutorials#Flashing_custom_ROM
On my HD2 and on the HTC desire we had to install clockwork-mod to install from SD??
I am pretty unsure about the Installation and rooting - i manged it on my old deviices flawlessly, but the N1 is pretty new to me and i hope you can help me out here
cheers
Here are the N1 Tutorials you need to do first:
http://www.myhangoutonline.com/tutorials/nexus-one/blog
Do the "unlock bootloader", "upgrade recovery" and "upgrade radio" ones.
Then download:
http://bit.ly/hrFfVu
&
http://miui.info/markhuk/miui/N1/miuidev-1.3.11_N1-EN-PACK1b_2.2.zip
Place those 2 files on the root of your SD Card.
Now reboot into recovery
Wipe Everything
Flash the ROM one, DON'T REBOOT!, Flash the Language Pack one, now reboot and you're all set.
Works THANKS!
Hi everyone,
I know this will make me sound like a complete noob but it doesnt matter. Any help or any pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
I have a stock motorola milestone 2.2.1. I hate it and have read how stable some of the roms are and I would love to experiment with them. However, never having a windows phone or an HTC before I have no idea how to do this with minimizing the risk.
So I have rooted my phone with universalandroot and have installed rom manager and titanium backup. Unfortunately, I read that rom manager wont work with the Milestone.
All of the threads on boot recovery and other methods seem to differentiate from one another. Is there a safeR method. I know no method is safe. What programs do I need to install on my computer and or my phone for this to work?
I know this a lot and I truly appreciate any help and support from this forum.
Thanks

First of all, ROM Manager does not work with the milestone. So please remove it and dont ever install Clockworkmod recovery on the milestone.
Second, What ROM do you want to install?
You need Androidiani Openrecovery for all your flashing needs of customs ROMS. You will need rsdlite to flash sbf files and offcourse the Moto usb drivers. Check the sticky threads in the development section. There are many tutorials.
This is easily one of the best ways to get everything done in the way of flashing a custom ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=983516
Depending on which ROM you want to install, it will determine what you need to download.
After rooting the phone, you will want to flash a vulnerable recovery sbf via RSD Lite, as shown in that thread the VR you should use will depend on your bootloader version. If you are running 90.78, then you can flash this VR: http://android.doshaska.net/rootable
After that happens, you can create a backup of all of your apps using TitaniumBackup.
Once you do that you want to place OpenRecovery(AOR) on your SD Card. Follow the steps from the first link I posted to get that on. You will want to place the custom ROM that you want into OpenRecovery/updates. If you are planning on using CM7, you will also need to download google apps from the CM7 thread here.
Once that is on, you will want to boot into recovery(power+x, see the Moto M logo, then release and push camera button+volume up), apply update.zip.
From there you want to select the Nandroid menu with the d-pad. Create a nandroid backup of what you want.
Now is the crucial step. You need to wipe the caches and ALL data. Choose wipe dalvik cache, wipe cache partition and wipe data/factory reset.
Now is time to apply your custom ROM!
It is recommended to create a nandroid backup everytime you flash a custom ROM, in case of anything going wrong.
Navigate to apply update in AOR, select the ROM that you want, select yes. Once it is done installing, wipe the caches and data AGAIN.
If you are installing the google apps, you will want to wipe the caches, flash the google apps, then wipe the caches again.
You will probably have to apply the baseband for your carrier, so you will need to navigate to change baseband, and apply the baseband for your carrier.
If you followed those steps, you should have a brand spanking new custom ROM on your phone.
Hope this helps.
@skadude66
I just really want to thank you so much for helping me with that. Your tips and the link to the guide explained step by step what I had to do.
Right now I am running miui gingerbread on my phone and it runs and looks great. Thanks.

stick with cm7 because a noob like you would simply not know how to partion a sd card with out destroying it, for the sense experiance http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970459 install this theme via theme chooser engine and install go launcher than install go launcher sense theme for the dock. done
Why are you making multiple threads? Learn to read and search.
The fact that you said CM7 with Sense tells me you are an absolute noob that has done ZERO research into anything.
Learn to search... read.. and stop making multiple stupid threads.

i already search wiki, and d android development for this device...
im just confused....
i already partition my sd card... so where do i put the rom? is it on the ext3 format or on the fat32 partition... im currently using 2gb, 1gb for ext3, 1gb for the fat32...
dont get mad on me
im just confused...
thaks anyway....
You don't need to partition the SD card.
Just read... if you can't figure it out then please go buy an iPhone. Its insanely easy if you just read.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
you dl the rom to your sdcard, it will be put in your "download" folder or you can dl to pc and copy to sdcard "download" folder. Follow OP on when to run alignment tool. It also gets dl to download folder. You need to wipe all including system before flashing.
MAKE A BACKUP OF PHONE (NANDROID) AND OF YOUR SDCARD FIRST
You don't need to go to bootloader to flash--it can all be done thru CWM
I use Amon so not up on CWM anymore
But it would be good to read a lot first by googling things like flashing roms with CWM and read the Runnymeade thread carefully for tips/info
ken
thanks sir!! REALLY appreciated it...
question sir...
if anything goes wrong(wish me not) while upgrading... or if the new rom i updated stock on X icon or in cynogenmod circling arow...
if my phone dumped me... just in case...
i'll just wipe dalvik cache, wipe data, then restore the back up rom
is that correct?
and for updating rom... do i need gapps like on my old phone milestone...
thanks!!
FYI. CM and Sense will never go together. CM is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) and Sense is its own thing. There is nothing that combines both of them because they can't be combined. You can get widgets and themes that mimic the look of Sense on CM, but none of the underlying framework will exist.
i've searched for days on trying to understand how to root the Vivid and still not sure if i've done it correctly.
devices i've rooted or think i've rooted b/c i installed custom ROMs:
- htc aria
- htc inspire
this is something completely different.
none of the threads seem to be clear and concise giving step by step instructions for installing custom ROMs. many abbreviations and skipped steps. i will attempt to be very detailed in what i've done thus far. i understand even the slightest detail is important when having inquiries on forums.
when attempting to root, used Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2
this assisted in unlocking boothloader (this term is still hazey to me)
now i'm thinking... because the bootloader is unlocked, i can get into recovery, which i can. for some reason, had a problem with completing step 6, so i dont know if i'm 'permanently' rooted or not.
with aria and inspire, i used this recovery section to install (note: is install and flash used interchangeably?) custom ROMs. however, i didnt manipulate any 'kernels' to do so (unless it was autoManipulated in the installation of the ROM. now this kernel thing is the reason why i'm writing this post.
i'm attempting to install holiraider_final_4g.zip (hasnt finished downloading yet).
this thread: [ROM][03/06/2012] HoliRaider FINAL - Sense 3.5 /APM/Beats/DSPAudio/Amaze/Bravia, gives files, but no instructs.
so my questions are
- if the bootloader is unlocked, and i can access recovery menu, am i rooted?
- is install and flash used interchangeably?
- to use the holiRaider ROM, must i install/flash the kernel shown in thread?
- if kernel is needed, when is it installed/flashed (in reference to the steps in installing/flashing ROM, ie: install ROM first, then kernel or vice-versa)?
- in lamens (noob, for dummies, etc) terms, what is CRT on/off?
- when is 'RestoreCRT_Animationfor_final.zip' installed/flashed (step by step)?
if more info is needed i'll be glad to give it.
also, i've read the 'everyone needs to read this' thread. dont know what happened, but i have no intention of disrespecting anyone who's assisting me.
thanks for any help.
I imagine someone will help more but to answer some of your questions:
You have to flash the kernel for the rom to run correctly or else you will boot loop.
The kernel is flashed first using a command prompt with your phone hooked up to the computer.
To check if you have root you should use titanium backup or another app that requires root. Just getting into cwm is not enough I don't believe.
I believe crt is an animation, either way not crucial for the rom.
Also, read this post for help with flashing the kernel/rom. Slapshot did a great guide.
Hope I helped somewhat.
i've installed titanium backup, it states i'm not rooted.
so now... that's the first thing i need to do before installing anything.
i've unlocked the bootloader and can access recovery menu. how do i go about permanently rooting vivid. the Vivid_All-In-One_Kit_v1.2 doesnt root my phone when using the 'permRoot' button.
any assistance is greatly appreciated.
is there a link to that thread of installing/flashing kernel by slapshot. i will need the information prior to installing/flashing the holiRaid ROM.
also, i remember going to chat room or something of the sort (mIRC i think) and got assistance w/ rooting my htc inspire by attn1. this guy was fantastic. is there anything like that for the htc vivid? he remotely took over my computer and rooted my inspire. it was beautiful.
basically i want bloatware gone. i also want to be able to move every app that has the option to move to SD to move to the SD (adobe flash player, nfs shift, adobe reader, etc...).
