Verizon Droid update destroyed my phone. Need an easy way, (preferably app) to root the latest update to my Verizon Motorola Droid 1st, generation.
Verizon Update Droid Forced mandatory stopped me from being able to root my phone using Z4Root, the forced Verizon Droid Mandatory update destroyed my phone causing it to do a total reset.
"IS THERE AN UPDATE TO Z4Root"? Is their another way to simply root for the new Verizon Droid update. It really ticks me off that Verizon/Droid can shove down our throats an update that we DO NOT WANT. I NEED HELP.
This really stinks. This wonderful little Z4Root app gave us who don't have the tech knowledge to go through a difficult manual Motorola Droid, (1st generation
Verizon Moto Droid), root access. This program previous to the update worked flawless, now sense the Verizon Droid update it has rendered this program dead. I am desperate because all my phones backup with with a great market app called Titanium Backup Pro, which I can no longer access due to the root exploit with Z4Root being rendered dead, also can't use BusyBox app.
I spoke to a Verizon tech who off the record & unofficially says that yes he agreed with me that the update was pushed as a great enhancement to the phone, (which I have yet to see any real enhancements), but that the update was designed to stop people from using exploits like rooting & using their cell as a free internet access to your house computer, Teathering, without first buying their hardware and paying an extra fee. What *** they are. The update actually totally wiped my phone, my fiancees phone & my sisters phone, Verizon says that they are aware of it "hypothetically" causing this problem for about 1 to 2 percent of their customers which is not enough to warrant a patch or doing anything about it.
yeah I love how they advertise this as the best thing for us, I was about to reroot my Droid, and the day of I wake up and my phone is updater with "great improvements" please someone come up with another one click root solution...
you know... i hate to say it but im glad i searched before doing the auto update. it usually ends with loosing or root.

Use super one click.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Its done from a computer. Click unroot first if you were previously rooted.
If the program looks like it froze just close it reopen and then click root.
I too lost the root Z4root had given me and this did the trick.
This didnt work for me. I hope someone can find a solution.
I had all the latest updates on my droid 1, and super one click handled the probloem just fine. I am now a first time root user. Guess I better learn more about all the cool things I can do now. But thanks to all for the good work!
Same thing happened to me on my Droid 1.
Is there a way to turn off these auto-updates?
I rooted my GF's phone and I used my phone as the dummy phone to test it with.
I like how google also removed z4 off my phone too.
didnt work on my motorola droid 1

Maybe this is your first piece of electronics, but it's completely expected that everytime a software update for a piece of hardware is released, exploits are closed. Apple does it, Sony does it, Microsoft does, HTC does it, Motorola does it, Nokia does it...The list goes on.
This WAS EXPECTED. I always found it entertaining how whenever an update was released for my EVO the forum here on XDA would get absolutely flooded with people saying how they lost root NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES THEY WERE WARNED! It could take 5 minutes, 5 hours, 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 years, or eternity for root to be regained after an update. There's no way to know.
any way of installing 3rd party non-market apps, like amazon appstore?

I just ran the update, it shows in the system version as 4.1.57 yet I still have my superuser permissions and can tether without adding to my plan. Not sure how or why, but it happened.

I would be helping fix it if I had the update. I'm still waiting for the notification, but thanks The OP is just forum clutter, and it's pretty rude to be making these requests minutes after the update is even pushed, and a BETA update, at that. That was my point.
Where are you guys located, getting the update already. I just checked and it said mine is up to date and I still have 4.1.26. Wierd!

Did you flash back to stock before the update or did you do the update on a rooted/gingerblured phone? Do you know if you were using 1.2.6 or 1.5.2? Have you tried running su in a terminal to make sure root actually works?
Was worried bout flashing without stock software already installed think ill go back to stock anyway to try it the official way first.. Can always go back and upgrade after rooted though if this works consistently.
The security hole that allowed for root on the phone is CLOSED in this update. There is no way of rooting your phone after this, save going back to one of the available SBFs. Confirmed by designgears as well.
As someone said earlier, "for now" the root method is disabled, and there is no way of rooting your phone after the update "at this moment".
I have confidence everything will be OK.
Boy am I glad I decided to stay away from this "update." I got accepted but when I go to check for updates it says I need a social networking account setup. When I then hit setup nothing happens so I said forget it lol.
I admit it, I'm a noob. Now once all the finger pointing and snikering subsides, I have a question........well maybe more of an opinion poll. I recently upgraded from a Motorola Droid Pro to a Motorola Droid 4. I did not root my pro because I was afraid of bricking it and now with the 4 I have the same concerns. The only reasons for my interest in rooting is: getting rid of "bloatware", battery life improvement (if possible), speed, and in general just because it can be done (for the "stick it to the man" enjoyment) Is rooting my Droid 4 a good option for me for no more than what I'm looking to do with a rooted phone? FYI I have never rooted any device and I do not want to do it if I can never go back to stock.

I say go for it. Rooting the D4 is pretty painless using the D4 Utility, even for a "noob". If you root you can use something like Titanium Backup Pro to freeze bloatware (don't delete it) which could, potentially, help you in terms of battery life and speed. Just rooting is pretty risk free. You are still technically on stock and OTA updates will still work just fine. Just use the RootKeeper app to keep root when accepting an OTA. You start to worry about bricking when you get into flashing custom ROMs and leak builds. Although the D4 has proven pretty hard brick.

I think that was more the D1. I remember when I was doing some research into buying one (back when it was new), and someone on a forum making a joke that they dropped their D1 and broke the floor
D4 is also pretty sturdy, but definitely not the tank the D1 was.
Anyway, back on topic, OP it is pretty easy to root the D4, just make sure not to *delete* the bloatware, just freeze it in Titanium Backup (or similar program), that way when the inevitable ICS OTA comes over, you can still upgrade!
Now even more concerns, my mind works overtime on stuff like this, if I root will it void my warranty, if I root can I "unroot" and return to stock? I can't afford to purchase a new one if it breaks and the warranty is no good.

Yes, you can unroot. D4 utility has root and unroot functions. Yes, it does technically void your warranty but I have yet to hear of someone being turned down because their phone was rooted. Especially if it's a hardware issue.

But if it is unrooted is that not technically back to stock and they couldnt tell that it was rooted? I understnd that if its broken and cannot, lets say power on, then of course i couldnt get into it to unroot. Sry for all the questions, but i tend to over analyze things
Correct. If you unroot (and make sure the superuser app is deleted) they shouldn't be able to tell it was rooted.

Hello,
First off let me say I'm not great at rooting my phone. When I had a Samsung Infuse I did it on accident pretty much and now that I have an Atrix, I'm no good at all. I'd like to be able to remove my internet browsers, the default one and Chrome, and I'd like to remove the Google Play store too. Basically, I just want my phone to have my email, 2 or 3 other apps I use, and that's it. Last time I removed my browser on the Samsung Infuse, I lost my data connection. Does any one know an easy, safe way to remove both browsers and Google Play? I'd almost be willing to pay for this if it's possible.
Thanks!

Kind of a personal thing, with the main thing being I love the phone, but don't like wasting time with the internet. And if I have access to the internet, I'd be stuck on it all day. Thus, I'd like to remove the play store to block access to doing that. Just using the apps I normally already use and keep those and remove the rest.
I've tried rooting Super One click but that doesn't seem to work. What is the best/easiest/fastest way to root my phone?

Basically what you need to do is flash the stock ICS image (4.0.4), root it, then install an app called "Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper" (on Play as "OTA RootKeeper" by Supercurio). Then you "temp unroot" via Voodoo and apply the 4.1.1 update. After you install the update you install Voodoo OTA Rooteeper again, and voila, you can restore your rooted phone.
There are posts in the thread I linked where people ask "can you flash 4.0.4 over 4.1.1" and have been answered "yes," but I didn't have to do it personally.
One of the steps is to update superuser and then update the superuser binary. There are 2 ways to do this, one through the app store & with the superuser program, and the other to "replace the apk in /system/app with the one in /data/app." I struggled with this step. I could update Superuser via the app store, Superuser would detect that its binary was out of date and then try to download the new version, but the installation would always fail. I ended up copying Superuser.apk and "su" from the Superuser website and copying them to the phone using ADB. Since you've said you suck at rooting, this might be too much for you. I don't now how necessary it is, maybe others can comment.
Good luck! Although I'm somewhat in agreement with other sentiments regarding your post ... a dumb phone & a dumb iPod would solve your Internet-distraction problems for a lot less hassle... plus put a decent wad of cash back in your pocket.

Well, I've thought about that, but I really like several apps that I don't want to lose, such as Google Maps/Navigation, Google Music, Sermon Audio, Google Drive, and Bank of America among the main ones. I'm about to get a Moto X on Tuesday. I wondered if there are any dangers of rooting the device? I am not interested (at least not right now) in running a custom ROM on it since it runs so close to AOSP anyway. But I would like to be able to use Titanium Backup with it and a few other things that require root.
I've read there are ways to do it, just not sure if they are safe or not.
As long as you can read and follow directions, there isn't anything to worry about.
Rooting your device void warranty and can brick your device if you don't follow the directions correctly or if you play with something you don't understand. But if you follow directions then you will be fine with nothing to worry about.

I was in the same boat, wanting to use root only for TBU, Tasker, and the occasional wifi tether.
Don't be in a rush, the phone works pretty good in stock form. When you're ready, read the forums, follow directions, and you'll be fine. There are a couple threads devoted to the topic, I used Hashcode's TWRP method for unlocked bootloaders without problem (after unlocking which was a little bit of a PITA).
I'm no stranger to rooting and flashing roms. I'll admit to being intimidated a little by the Moto X forum posts since it seems that our phone is a little trickier than what I'm familiar with.
FWIW, battery life on this phone is awesome compared to my Gnex and it seemed to get even better when unlocked and rooted. Also, Xposed is awesome.
Good luck!
The real danger of rooting (other than voiding warranty, etc.) is potential user stupidity.
Root access still requires the user's permission. Whenever root access is requested by an app you will be prompted to grant access. If you get reputable apps from the play store this usually won't be an issue. If you are downloading APKs from less trustworthy sources all bets are off.
Malware often runs without root, and it's usually better this way because requesting root access without an obvious need is a big warning sign.

I completely agree with this. Personally, I have rooted all of my previous phones (Droid 2, HTC Rezound) but have not done so for this one. With the speed in which updates are released, and the fact that the phone is basically stock Android, I haven't felt the need to root it.
Also, you might find this post by me interesting: How to backup and restore app data without Root. The only real root feature I typically used was for backing up, but Helium + ADB can do all of this for you.

the more i have lived without root, the more i realize that its just not that necessary anymore. It sucks that its suck a PITA and that the mfgs havent figured out a way to give us access to the stuff we want root for in the first place while protecting the vulnerable stuff at the same time. It cant be that crazy of a concept to put certain things in a protected shell and allow the other stuff to be less secured and give us all the good stuff of root without their panties being in a bunch about it.
It's not about security, it's about makin you use their bloatware/spyware. I want root to get out of the goolag. I don't trust them and without root I have no choice but to use their info harvesting services and apps. It's like being held at gunpoint and being forced to give up all privacy to the new international nazi organization called Google

I don't trust them and without root I have no choice but to use their info harvesting services and apps. It's like being held at gunpoint and being forced to give up all privacy to the new international nazi organization called Google

i can see why youre on that thought path, but if youre so at arms over this, then why use a brand of phone that is notorious about not being very root friendly? Compile your own firmware, dont use android at all (there are alternatives). Why did you get a S9 in the first place? The S8 wasnt exactly a hotbed for root
How can I help? I also happen to have the SM-G960U on Android 8.0.0 UI 9. Security Patch Dec 1 2018. Def vulnerable. Been waiting for some type of exploit. Idc about Samsung pay or knox. I just want TWRP & FULL CONTROL of what I buy. EFS Backups.

If I had known I would have just bought another s8+ and besides that, all this stuff about Google hadn't came out yet. I can't afford another 5-700 for a new phone, I don't have a contract nor do I want one but I assure you that when I buy another one it won't be Samsung
May have a way to root.
Hello I was able to download vmos and in settings is option to turn on root. It's a phone emulator so it's a primative root but I was able to transfer everything to vmos and when I run root checker it says root is successful and I can run all the root apps. But I also have a question has anyone used this work around and would I be possible to flash anything this way? Or would the twrp through the app work like it would normally? But I gained root this way without unlocking bootloader. Could possibly be a way to somehow use this backdoor to gain the real root. But so far everything works how it should. I'll keep everyone posted on happens when I try to flash somthing through twrp in vmos.
