I'm running Froyo/CM6, by the way.
In short, anytime the phone is put into the car dock, the bluetooth media volume is set to max. If I have it connected and playing as I insert it, it's fine unttil the next track plays. I have even deleted the actual car home launcher app from the phone, although the phone still detects it has been inserted into the car dock (icon in notification.) Even selecting this icon and exiting car mode still leaves me with the same issue - volume on BT audio constantly being reset to max.
This does NOT happen on the desk dock, that works flawlessly.
Is there a way to somehow keep the phone from detecting being inserted into the car dock? Or somehow "spoofing" the dock so it thinks it's a desk dock? I haven't looked into the pins on the two docks, since I think there are 4 contacts on the phone, and only 3 pins on each dock.. so maybe one triggers normal and one triggers desk? Will get back to you all on this. But in the meantime ... help!
Thanks in advance!
Just checked, same number of pins. Although something occured to me which I will test in a bit ... perhaps there's a magnet in the base of the desk dock, which is how it knows which is which ... ?
***PROBLEM (sort of) SOLVED!!!***
No magnets involved, but when looking at the car dock, if you cover the second / middle pin with something non-conductive so the contacts on the phone don't touch that single pin when it's inserted, the phone still charges but does NOT know it's in the car dock, therefore it doesn't go all goofy with the audio volumes.
Downside is that it doesn't automatically open up whatever Car Home app you may want, but at the cost of one whole extra click .. ? Fine by me.
Photo to illustrate, maybe this will help someone sometime.
Having exactly the same issue, going nuts trying to solve it. Will try this, thanks for the tip.
Just my 2 cents :
You can try an app such as "tasker" to modify your N1 behaviour when it detects it's inserted into the car dock, and set up the volume you need.

Sorry for the bump here, but I'm having the exact same issue and for some reason changing the media volume does NOTHING for me. At any level it's full blast aside from 0 where it mutes.
I use to have a droid 2 and I used it with the car dock with out any problems at all, My car had the aux input for the audio cable from the dock, so when ever my phone would ring or I would make a call, it would go through the cars speakers, Ok so now I have the D3 and the new D3 car dock, same car. Here's the problem, when ever the phone is in the car dock and you place or receive a call, by default the phone switches to speaker phone, and when in speaker phone mode it will not play through the speakers, and yes I can just hit the speaker phone button on the dial pad to turn the speaker off and then it will play through the cars speakers but I really dont like having to do this every . time,I NEVER had to do this with my D2. I have tried other car dock apps to see if this would go away but it don't. Any help or thought would be great.

Sorry man, but I've dug through and have not found any settings pertaining to that. It may be an automatic feature that has not been developed into an adjustable setting in Android 2.3.4 (Since its a new Car Dock App)
However, this may help you out.
http://ig88.cwfk.net/?page_id=96
It's a third party app that might work.
Actually, I think I found something pertaining to it.
In here: http://static.googleusercontent.com...lp/hc/pdfs/mobile/AndroidUsersGuide-2.3.4.pdf
On page 333.
Not sure yet if it applies to our Droid 3 completely, but it might. I don't have an AUX in port in my car to test it out at the moment.
Edit: It appears Motorola/Verizon left out the "Dock" settings under the general settings menu. Unless, it shows up when docked - idk yet.
If it doesn't, I'd try going into applications, "all" applications, select cardock or car home app, and clear data. This may restore the question that it supposedly asks you when you connect to the dock for the first time.
I found the problem and the solution.
Without any setting to change and all the apps I tried did not help, I decided to take a look at the dock and by that I mean take it apart and see whats going on inside. What I found was that where the usb car charger attached there was a circuit board, I am not an electronics guy but I figured that was whats causing the phone to automatic go in to speaker phone when connected to the dock, and I was right. That was the problem, and now for the solution, I had a car dock for a droid x handy so I took it apart as well, and I found that it did not have the circuit board, it was just a straight through put, from the usb connection on one end to the micro usb on the other end, the end that sticks up in the car dock that the phone connects to. So with a little bit of modification and I do mean little, I was able to swap them out, and now all is well again. Pretty ****ty that MOTO would do this and not give an option to change it in the setting though.
Anyone using an external DAC? Does the Z3c provide enough power via USB to drive a DAC (I assume not) or is it necessary to use a self-powered DAC? I'd be in music heaven if my Meridian Explorer worked with the Z3
I just tried out my HRT microStreamer with the Z3 Compact but the volume wouldn't adjust down from max. I just emailed HRT to find out what the issue is as the microStreamer is designed to allow the host (Z3C) to manage the volume.
I also have the Meridian Explorer but, unlike the HRT microStreamer, I don't think the Explorer works on any smartphone without a separate power source. I'll test and update my post if otherwise.

You need to go into sound effects settings in the Walkman app and untick the box for "Hi Res audio via USB" This alows you to adjust EQ as well as volume via your phone.
I have a Fiio E18 DAC/Amp and it sounds great.

i did that and it didn't work. i tried both the USB OTG cable that came with the Z3 Compact as well as one from JDS Labs.
I also tried using the following apps: Walkman, Plex, and USB Audio Pro.

I too have the e18 which I love - but I have two issues using it with the z3c:
1) if I plug it in while the screen is on, I can no longer turn the screen off with the power button. Plugging it in while the screen is off though, prevents this from happening.
2) Once I unplug the e18, the phone gets stuck awake and drains battery. lookig in battery stats, the awake bar is solid, and "android system" starts taking up more and more % as the "keep awake" increases (i turn off screen for 5 seconds, and android system keep awake grows by 5 seconds). rebooting the phone unsticks this.
anyone else seeing this?

Hmm. I think we can conclude from that is that it's DAC specific. Have you heard back from Microstreamer?

1) Interesting. I never noticed but that also happens to me although I can live with that.
2) I havent had that problem but as you know, "Android System" could mean a whole range of things. Is your phone stock?
On another note, how do you tie it all together? The OTG cable is too small to have them back to back because of the Micro USB location on the phone. I have a 2m Micro to Micro cable but its just too big and I can't be doing with a multitude of adapters.

Yeah, #1 isn't too bad, I can live with that. Even #2 isn't *too* bad, I've just been restarting the system once I unplug the DAC. It does seem to be E18 related though, I can consistently get "awake" stuck on just by plugging in the e18, playing some music, and unplugging it. Whether I have "hi res audio over USB" checked or unchecked, whether I plug it in screen off or screen on, etc - it always goes into the "stuck on awake" as soon as I unplug the DAC from the phone. Strange - my phone is stock, unrooted, etc..
As for the cable, yeah - the one that came with the E18 is way to short, and I ended up getting a longer micro<->micro usb cable. WIthout it, I'd have to use the fiio and Z3C "inverted" and at a 45 degree angle to each other just to make it work, it wasn't very pretty, haha.

Out of interest, where did you get the cable from? I could only find a 2m one. They are rare!

haha yes - I had to DIY it a bit using one of these: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1099?gclid=CNHa7_q-3cECFY17fgodQ08ATg attached to the standard usb->microusb cable.
Oh and to answer OP - the fiio e18 works well as it powers itself by its own battery - but the alien Dac I have that powers itself from USB, does not work on the z3c. Strangely, it works on my HTC one m8 and iphone 5s..
Haha yes, I have a goody bag full of adapters and leads. It all just adds to the bulk. A 6-8inch Micro to Micro would be perfect.
The E18 is great bang for buck, charges your phone and I also use it as a Laptop DAC.

Got the Z3 Compact working with Fiio E10 but NOT the E10K (not enough current). All internally powered. The E10 is driving an old Sennheiser 565. It just works. And, of course, turn on the Hi-Res USB audio setting.
Note: I had to try a few USB cables until I got one that works. Don't know why.
Though not exactly a DAC, I have used the Sony PlayStation elite headphones with the rumble feature with the z1 compact, z2, and z3c. It uses a USB dongle of course and all the features including virtual surround and rumble work. I have a cheap $2 USB otg cable I purchased off of amazon.
Fiio E07K
Using a Fiio E07K. It has it's own power so doesn't have to rely on current from the Z3C. Have used it with the stock Walkman app and with USB Audio Player Pro with no problems.
I've tried the Audioquest Dragonfly 1.2 usb DAC. Works, but the intenal volume control of the DAC cannot be managed by the phone. Hence only 100% (nominal) output volume is supported, which renders my DAC useless when using it with IEM earphones (much too loud).
I have also tried the Dragonfly 1.2 on my new Z3 compact using the Walkman app. Same here
unable to adjust volume from the Z3
using a Y OTC USB cable. Plugging the charger cable into the female micro USB does not charge the phone
Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be? Phone, Walkman app, Dragonfly? Would be great if this could be fixed. It used to work flawlessly with my old Samsung S4 using USB audio player pro.
I got pioneer xpa 700 and my z3c, is it possible?

Pioneer xpa 700 is made for ios devices only, this amp is a badass i really like how its made... the design, the feature, its a customable amp, i do some research that z3c can drive this amp as an android, because z3c has a feature via "micro usb sound setting option". And now guys is it possibble that this amp xpa 700 is compatible with z3c as an android? Using the via "micro usb" sound feature?. i do really appreciate your response guys. Thnx all have a nice day
Hello everyone! I picked up a Nexus 6 the other day, and I have ran into a very interesting audio problem with it. I like to use it in my car to listen to Spotify. However, for some reason, when I plug in the cable, it does not always detect that the cable is plugged in, and still outputs sound through the phone speakers. I originally thought this was the aux cable I was using, and I replaced it, but it was still happening. I was messing with it a bit more today and it seems that if I plug it in slowly, it will play out of my car just fine. However, if I plug it in normally, it is like it doesn't see the cable at all. This does not happen at all with other systems at all, be it other cars or home audio gear. It also does not happen with my deck and a different phone (I tested it with my old One M8). Currently, I am using SoundAbout to force it to output to the headphone jack before getting in the car, but this is getting to be a bit of a pain to remember to disable it each time I take my phone out. Has anyone else ran into a similar issue? Does anyone have any suggestions?
