Settings
Application
Manage applications
check all your user apps there must be one or a few with much data.
check first all apps before you clear one
120mb is normal an should be enough

I don't understand this, it seems when I go into personal data It is full apps using space not settings.. For instance Samsung Apps is using 73MB.. Most likely because of the apps I have downloaded from that program. Why wouldn't this be installed to Internal SDCard instead of wasting Personal Data away...

Almost out of space, but not that many apps?

I'm trying to figure out why my phone is so low on space. I hardly have any apps installed, but it still says I have about 6MB free. Some of the apps have downloaded extra things they need to run (like this translator app), but all of that is stored on the SD card to my knowledge.
What is the fastest way, short of naming off every app I have to you guys, that I can figure out what files or files are taking up so much space on my phone?
go to settings, applications, manage applications ..there hit menu and sort by size .. you might find out that your browser and market cache are huge. select them and hit clear cache

yea the cache for many apps can do that to you
simplest way to avoid that is by moving cache to the sd card (just search for a guide, there are many )
Well surprisingly, no cache was that big (just a couple of megs). I can't really figure out what's so big on this thing.

do you use the google maps a lot? When you organized it by size were there many apps over a meg?
Root your phone and use Apps2SD and stop worrying about the lack of space.
Have you used any kind of program to backup your apps before a flash? The only way I know of fixing it is to get into recovery and do a FRESH wipe and fresh reinstall, then manualy add all your apps back. Should clear things up.

[Q] My Internal Memory Is Disappearing And I Don't Know Why?

First about my phone, It's a Sprint CDMA Hero rooted and running Damages 2.09.1 rom. I have a 16gig card in it and the phone really works well.
Now my problem..........
My internal memory has a parasite that is slowly eating it away. I have figured out that when internal memory gets below 16MB it turns on the little warning in the status bar. So this is how I'm checking my internal memory so everyone that takes their time to respond to me is using the same method. I go to Settings> SD&Phone Storage, at the bottom of the screen that comes up is the "Internal Phone Storage" Available space and mine says 15.84MB. Today I installed a highly rated memory manager from the Market and it didn't help at all. So my first question is How much "internal Phone Storage" do you have left?
Now my second question is when you go to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> and scroll way down to "Mail - HTC Corporation" and click on that. Now look at the storage. Mine says 15.64 MB Total. Which breaks down there to Application 2.59MB and Data at 13.05MB. Clearly my Mail program is holding the biggest chunk of memory. But I want to know how this compares to everyone else's. If this is true then it would account for the parasitic growth or loss of my memory.
So if I'm way different then this will start a good discussion on what to do about this problem. Just let me say at this point that I delete all email once I have read it. I delete the sent, draft and Trash folders too. I also go into the SD Card and delete everything that is in the .Mail folder. So if my phone is storing old email now I have to fine out where and delete it.........
Also I constantly clear out the various cache's that the phone has too. But this memory is slowly going away. Any help would be appreciated very much.
I also appreciate everyone weighing in on this perplexing problem.
Thanks for your help and comments.........
Lisa
You can try clearing data for mail. If you don't want to reset up your accounts, back up mail account settings with titanium backup and restore afterwards. Also, consider using apps2sd, and storage is a non issue.

How do I clear out the "mail data"? I have looked for that data and can't find it. If you could tell me where that data us located I would clear it NOW!
Also I will look into that apps2sd now also.
Thanks for your help......

you are confusing storage (like a Hard Drive) and RAM (memory)... the memory manager only helps keep unneeded programs from running in the background it will not free up space on the internal 'hard drive'
you could also 'upgrade' to CyanogenMod 6 as Android 2.2 natively supports putting apps on the SD card.

You 'clear data' in the same place you 'clear cache', which you said you know how to do above. Its in the manage apps menu.
Well how do I clear space on my internal "hard drive"? How do I clear mail data which seems to be hogging my memory?
Houston we have a problem and don't know how to fix it....
Yyou go to the same place we told you before. Settings, applications, manage, then view all and sort by size. Then you will see what's taking up space. You can go into it there and clear data. If you are rooted, download cachecleaner and run it. If none of that helps then you either have to start uninstalling apps you don't use or you've done something that is affecting your storage space and you need to probably do a wipe/reflash.

Well my Mail App or rather the stock HTC Mail app is the growing hog. When I go in to "Manage Applications" all I can clear is the Cache and NOT the data that is so big. I just don't get this. My memory, as I said has a parasite that is growing and eating memory. I'm right on the ragged edge of the flagged warning coming up about "low memory".
Here is a radical idea. Can I go in to the system> app folder and copy and save the HTC Mail apk and then delete the file and hopefully the entire Mail program from my phone. Reboot and then reinstall the HTC Mail apk and run it to reinstall it and then reset up my email? It's definitely the Mail application that is growing and I don't know why. It's saving mail somewhere...........
Also I downloaded and installed the Cacheclean program and ran it. It said all my cache was already clean so it proves I have been diligent about keeping what I can clean................
All help and idea's are appreciated.

that's not what that means. that means either superuser permissions is not working properly, or you've lost root on your phone, or something related to busybox, per the app developer. believe me, i've ran into that application telling me the same thing multiple times. you could never keep cache that clean on your phone unless you never used it.
Well the cache cleaner isn't working. I checked the SU program and the cache cleaner is not listed there so I guess its not working. Busybox and SU are working for titanium so the cache cleaner is a dive.
Oh well I get A for effort. I'll just use this lousy hero till it runs put of memory and I guess get a better phone like a LG or Droid.......
Or when it's no longer functional you can run the ruu and see if that fixes anything
The htc mail app has a bug where the mail doesnt get deleted even when you empty the trash. Its stored somewhere hidden on the internal memory. Also if you sync mail for more than 3 days it seems to cause memory issues as well.
Best bet is to use the K9 mail app. It will allow you to keep things clean.
Now 13+ megs should not be causing an issue so obviously you have a decent amount of apps installed as well. Id recommend running the a2sd to keep your internal clean.
I am following through as I alway do to thank you all for your help and tell you how I resolved the problem. I received some great advice from everyone and the last tip, which is usually my luck was the best.
The bottom line someone questioned why I thought I lost root. I explained what was going on and the best and final suggestion was to down load the latest Superuser.apk and flash through "recovery". Yes I had to ask exactly what that meant but I followed the directions and did it. Problem solved. I had SU working on my phone for Root Explorer and Titanium Backup. Then I downloaded Cachecleaner and it worked this time perfectly and it found 25MB of junk on my phone and cleared it out. So now I'm running 40MB of internal memory with all my programs working rather snappy now. In my estimation I screwed up the SU with the memory manager that was recommended somewhere along the line. When it didn't do anything for me I uninstalled it and I think my SU went with it. But the phone is fixed and I want to thank you all for your time in responding to my problem and requests. Sometimes multiple............
Thanks again.....

[q] what 'system data' is stored in data/data

I have determined that a lot of my low space issues in the data/data folder are from nearly 120MB of 'system data'. I was confused but willing to work around it since system data is usually pretty important.
However, I recently set up my wife's cappy just like mine (same ROM, Kernel, Modem) and she only has 8MB of system data in her data/data folder
So, now I'm looking to understand what system data goes into that folder. I know I could do a complete clean install to figure parts of it out, but if there is an answer out there it would be much easier than the pain of a clean install.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe all of your application data (cache & user data, but not the applications themselves) lives in there. If you go through your application list and clear the caches, or use a cache cleaner from the market, you should be able to free up much of that space.
The nice thing about the cache cleaners from the market is that they will sort by cache size so you can see which programs hoard cache space (*coughFacebookcough*)
I've thought of that, and 1 Tap Cleaner only shows 1MB in cache. In fact, since I haven't been using a lot of my apps while figuring this out, nearly all of them are 0 cache.
Is there something that 1 tap cleaner is missing?
Cache is the easiest way to free up space, but I believe all of your user data, databases, etc. live in there as well. If you move some apps to the SD card, I think it takes the user data with it which should free up some space.
You could also go through and clear the user data from apps that have big databases (like Facebook), but this will clear all of your settings and account info. Once you start using it again, this is obviously going to start filling up again but I find it a bit hard to believe that my username, password, and settings really need to occupy the 3.06mb that it's currently taking up on my phone. It must be accumulating crap somewhere along the way.
I've moved some apps to SD w/o really affecting the amount stored there. I have also cleared some data which did help, but doesn't affect the system data.
That's the strangest part. The system data seems to be ~120MB no matter what I do. From all I can find, I only have approx 35MB of actual application user data... the rest is listed as system data, which I can't break down any further.
I've heard of the contacts storage going haywire and taking up space. Have you tried checking and/or clearing that one? Obviously you'll lose anything you don't have backed up with Google.
If that doesn't help, I'm out of ideas short of wiping all of your data and starting over.
Huh... I'll check into the contacts one. I'll report back here with what I find.
Thanks!
Darnit... only 4MB was in contact storage... and it didn't seem to affect my system data.
I guess I'll start preparing to start over. I think I may have done a backup after i fresh installed everything... perhaps I could reinstall that and see what things looked like!
Thunderbolt adds a sqlite_optimize script which defrags databases. That may help reduce the size.
Any time I use Titanium Backup to restore my apps, I do it in chucks and never restore system data since I'm always changing ROMs. For chunks I mean restore apps+data only for apps that need it, then restore apps without for all the rest. Any apps which I don't run never save any data so it saves space.

Transfering app data to ics

I have heard a few times around here that you should not use titanium backup to restore app data when upgrading to ics from gingerbread. There are however, a few apps which I really need to keep the data from. Is there any way to manually transfer data from gingerbread to ics without transferring any system data that would screw with ics?

Shouldnt be a problem to restore user apps. The app stores data on the same partition and in the same way regardless of the rom.

While that is true, some (read: VERY FEW) apps do crap out between versions, in which there is no alternative except to clear the app's data. You can do this on an app-by-app basis in the applications menu or through TiBU.
You shouldn't need to do this unless the app force-closes on opening or something of the like. I'd always maintain a backup of your user data through either TiBU, CWM or MyBackup every month or so. Also, Google does support data backup through the Play Store if you've enabled the options in your Settings -> Privacy menu, but I wouldn't hinge on that fact, and I know cases where it didn't work for me.

[HELP] Mobile Data Consumption for Android?

greetings friends,
i have a problem with mobile data consumption for this latest upgrade. before this, when it was 4.1.2, i didn't remember android OS really need that much data. but when i upgraded the OS to 4.2.2, the data consumption is considerably high...
the problem is, i use daily internet package where i have to renew the pass everyday. when it exceeded the quota, i'll have to pay using my credit balance. and it is very costly!
how do i stop or disable the android OS internet consumption? any idea?
p/s: unable to post a picture. newbie here.
Just go into:
settings/more/mobile networks/and uncheck mobile data. That turns off data transmission - turn it on when you need it.
Easier way is to have mobile data on the quick pull down menu and turn it off there when you don't need it...
You can also enable Stamina Mode in power settings which disables data traffic when the screen is off

dear sir,
thanks for the response. very much appreciate it. :good:
i did limit the usage. but my concern is that, how can i turn off the 'Android OS' or at least limit the OS usage of internet. sometimes i didnt really use the internet, but it seemed the traffic kept getting higher. i did switch off the auto-update for all my apps.

Hi mate, I was facing the same problem after upgrading to 4.2.2.
The cause behind this is backup and rest.
Go to Settings->Backup & Reset and uncheck Back up my data.
The phones starts taking a backup of almost everything on your phone on some cloud server, which eats a lot of data.
Once you uncheck it, your data consumption will return to normal.

5 Best Ways To Reduce Mobile Data Consumption
5. Update your Apps Over WiFi Only
Many apps in Google play store get unnecessary updates by unnecessary i mean they are meant to fix bugs only, and have you noticed how many times all your apps were auto-updated without your consent, spending all them precious GBs, so wasting your finite date over useless updates is not a great idea. To disable Auto-Update you just need to open the Google Play Store and tap on the side tray button, click on Settings option and then select the “Auto-update apps” and select Auto-update apps over WiFi only.
4. Turn On Data Compression on Google Chrome
Most of us are Android users, coz this process is only for Android Users. And if you are an Android user you are also likely Chrome users. Most of us Don’t know that Chrome supports a feature that can reduce data consumption, Google states this feature should save you about 50% in data, without even feeling any difference. All you need to do is open Chrome and hit the menu button and select Settings, click Data Saver and then toggle the option and it done.
3. Cache Everything You Can
Like Google Maps and Google Play Music allow for storing data locally and many other apps. Make sure to save as many as caches and data you can while you are on a WiFi network. Afterwards you can enjoy your saved data without wasted Precious Mobile Data.
2. Avoid Online Streaming
The most awesome Things over the internet consume more data, this includes streaming videos and music, as well as looking through high quality images or GIF files. Try to avoid this kind of consumption as much as possible if you really want to save your mobile data. And if you need to watch it, make sure you change the settings and set quality at lower rates.
1. Restrict Background Data
Do you know that when your phone is not in use some apps spend your too much data. the feature we about to tell is actually one of the greatest features on Android. Background data allows apps to keep everything updated which leads to a great amount of Data wastage. so here is what you can do, Go into Settings > Data Usage and select Restrict Data for the apps that consume large amount of data and dont worry you can undo this by the same method.
