How to go about modding the on screen keyboard?

Ok so I have been searching the forums and I cannot find an exact answer for what I want to change so if this is a problem that had already been solved, please direct me to the thread.
I just recently dl'd the chm binary release and like it. But the on screen keyboard is hard on my eyes.
So my question is how would I go about replacing it with something like, o say the buuf on screen keyboard instead?
HTC_IME is not what I want just to clarify.
And once again, I apologize if this has already been threaded...

We could help you, but it is a 3rd party keyboard. What keyboard is it?

I'm not really sure. After installing the HTC_IME, I now have 2. Htc keyboard and android keyboard. If I knew how to take a screenie, I would but I don't.
As far as I know, its the on screen keyboard I've had since I rooted...
The keyboard that comes with chm binary is what I want to change...

well, I know how to modify the look of the builtin keyboard, but I haven't messed with 3rd party stuff.
The stock keyboard can be changed by theming. They're just png files, although the .9.pngs make it a little bit more complicated.

Well I kinda figured as much but what I'm really trying to ask is where do I find them?

They're in framework-res.apk on the phone. If you extract this file they'll be under res/drawable/
The filenames are btn_keyboard*.png
By using metamorph or creating an update.zip style theme you can change these and apply a theme to the phone. Theming is a real pain, but I think it's worth learning how to do.

Ya, I have already pieced together a blackbar to my liking so I'm well aware of the hassles it is to do. I'll be learning the .9's as soon as I get my pc parts back from rma and then I'll try to put out a skin.

If you want to do this easily, download the buff keyboard skin for better keyboard, and take the .9.pngs from there.

Wow! Now that should have been said at the very beginning. Good thing I was too busy today to get to that. Cloverdale, you just saved me a few hours of frustration. still though, I thank the both of you for the help. I will update the thread when I have success so everyone knows its solved!
Ps- anyone else try to read the forums on your phone? Its a little tricky...
Sorry for the off topic comment but I felt the need...

ok so I couldn't really find a way to download the better keyboard/buuf theme on the pc so I went and tried swapping the btn-keyboard---'s and noting happened after add.
So now I'm on the hunt for the better keyboard dl
I don't know where to look for the file when dl'ing to phone so if all else fails, I guess I could dl to phone and then search for it by folder by painstaking folder...
Update - I cannot for the life of me find the file on the web or on the phone. I dl'd from marketplace but I must not be very smart cause I don't know where marketplace stores stuff...
Downloading the better keyboard theme was supposed to save me grief but in fact, it did the exact opposite...
Update - Well I thought by removing the btn_keyboard_key.xml would solve my problem considering the BUUF skin does not contain one. Same nasty black and blue keyboard. All the buuf keyboard .--- are there so I'm confused once again.
I do not want to install another pay-for app and I don't want the entire buuf theme as of now so I will wait till later today after sleep and try again.
Unless someone knows exactly what's wrong. I'm doing everything I can to keep this 3 month old drywall from having holes in it...
I thought the black bar mod was hard to do... hahaha! That was a cake walk compared to this...
Update - Removing the xml's to the keyboard was a bad idea. It forced closed the android keyboard cause it wanted to change the language to latin or something like that. Touch Input keyboard (HTC_IME) will still work though and I made backups so all of this is just a learning experience for me.
...This is so not like modding and skinning a moto. Way more complicated. So much can go wrong.
Which reminds me, how do I view the .xml's with win7? Never done it before...

So does anyone have any other ideas? Maybe there's something I've been missing this whole time?

Well the only other place I can think of is the LatinIME.apk, but I'm not sure about that one

You know, that almost makes sense cause when I removed the .xml for the keyboard to make it match with buuf, the phone kept screaming at me about ..... latin something. So I will check this out and let you know.
But now I have a new problem. I think I need to remove a few applications cause my phone keeps force closing everything after reboot due to an update.zip file. So once I conquor this then I'll start working on the original problem...

Hey guys .. well i have a pretty sick ass theme put together, and i am at a loss here .. and i have PM'd almost everyone and the new flag-away response is gtalk me .. psh .. if it were only that easy ..
now question one .. when i go to sign my *.zip, it will let me apply the zip, boot, function almost 90 percent correctly, and than i will proceed to get a multitude of errors in my OS. Mainly my GApps. I have found that this only has happened on recent Cyan .2.3.1, and .1.2.3 - as well as EVERY 2.0. 2.01, and 2.1 build.
I NEED YOUR GUYS HELP. it just keeps telling me that i have a f/c and the usual shmiiit in between.. i am ready to pull my hair out. i have used Stericsons tool, and the cmd.exe method, and the right click. WHICH ALL USED TO WORK FINE..

it happens to me randomly, wipe, 1.6 image, cm 4.xxx, theme.
but the first thing i did when i clicked this thread is clicked back but then i thought id give it a chance, next time try not to type in rediculous sized fonts it doesnt get you any more help than typing in regular sized font

the reason your theme doesnt work on eclair is because most of the files in drawable within the framework-res.apk have been moved to drawable-mdpi
edit: nvm i think you said they work 90% on eclair roms? if so, disregard this post lol

yea i didnt think the massive font showed through the Header all the way through to the XDA welcome screen, damn im good...
im playin, i know man it was an error, just is aggrivating when all the 1.6 works, but noooooo 2.0? wow

Can you please fix your OP so it is not so hard on the eyes?
This isn't going to be a signing issue if you can flash your theme. You may want to post your theme or at least the images you edited so people can see what you did, you may have editing something you shouldn't have or did it incorrectly. Do you know what .9's you edited before? Did you look at any changes between the images from one version to another? In 4.2.x some thing have changes and images needed to be reprocessed and such for certain .9's. Btw, most willing to help would rather do it in gtalk over PM's. I know I do because it is easier to explain things on the fly rather then keep going back and forth on a PM.

I just got the gtablet for christmas and I just found this forum. I hope this wasnt asked before if it was please direct me. How do I change the wallpaper? I have it setup as classic home. Also while on classic home I only have the following icons weather, news, photos,music, videos, and clock how do I get all my icons there instead of touching the 3rd icon down in the lil tool box on the side? I also read on here about people loading different software on instead of the taptap thing it uses. What are the advantages of the different software? Sorry its long..Thanks

That will give you some basics about the different roms and other things.
Then read, and read, and read some more.
Most importantly is whatever you decide.. "Follow The Steps EXACTLY" Don't not do them because it just doesn't seem right. It is very easy to mod this tablet. It is also very easy to run into problems. None of the problems are real serious, and can be fixed but they will make you nuts trying to figure out what happened. So follow the directions....
The reason people put different roms on there tablet, or phone, or whatever is to gain features, to fix things that don't work right, and to gain performance. Out of the box the tablet is not bad nowadays in comparison to what was loaded on it when I first got mine.
If you are new to this, read, read, read....... And don't be afraid. It is hard to really break this thing...

im so lost lol i tried to install that clockwordmod thingy and i cant get it...so frustrating

I believe there are two different update.zip files for clockwork. One for internal sd and one for external. I used the external. Put it on micro sd, insert, power down, boot into recovery with power and volume +, and voila... There are several great tutorials on this site...

1st, Way to go with making the move to a custom rom.
Setting wallpaper
-All you need to do is press and hold on the home screen.
-You will see a pop up with options.
-Go to wallpaper.
-Select where you are getting the wallpaper from.
-Choose your wallpaper and you will have to crop it a bit and save...
You should now have your wallpaper set.
For Clocks you need to go to the market and choose your preference of clocks for example like typoclock and do sort of the same as above but this time with widgets.

If you download an image from the Gtablet or just transfer it to it, it should show up in your gallery. For me, I usually need to reboot for the Gallery to see new images. Once you get the wallpaper popup, one of the options is Gallery. Use that, find your image and select it.
Most of all spend some time screwing around with Android and learn the OS. Always remember the long press and the menu key. They are th skeleton keys to Android. If there's and option you're looking for, one of those two is usually how you'll find it.

[Q] Changing Boot Animation

I decided to try and make a custom boot animation. after i finished creating my boot animation i followed the instructions from nookdevs to apply it to the nc, it still didnt work. I used adb shell and started the boot animation, it didnt start, but im not sure what the problem is because i did it with a premade one, it worked fine. plz help me. I have attached the file if you want to look at it and see if anything is wrong. One problem that may be causing it not to work is that the pictures may be too big, but im not sure. Plz help

Okay, I think I see the problem. You have part 1 set up in portrait mode and part 0 is set up in landscape mode. I could be wrong, but I think you can only do it in portrait mode. Which is 600x1024 images.
Another issue is your desc.txt which is supposed to be 3 lines. When I looked at yours it was all on 1 line. If it uses the EOL as suggested by Nookdevs, then that would be another issue.

k i did what you said. I changed the pictures to portrait mode, and changed the desc.txt to three lines. You can try but for me it still didnt work when i put it in. when i ran adb shell and typed startbootanim. It just came back to the homescreen.

Okay, I don't think I was making myself clear as I didn't notice any change. So I made the adjustments myself and this works.
I tried uploading it like six fricken times and XDA keeps timing out on a 22k file. So if you shoot me an PM here with your e-mail address I'll send it to you and like I said...tested and it works.

Mr. Personality Robot

Does anyone have one of these, and if so, how far have you gotten in building new personalities? I would love to be able to edit the text files to control the sprites, but don't know how. Last I heard several years ago android78 was working on an editor to do this, but has since disappeared. I know how to change the mp3's, and rebuild the .vivo file, that's not the hard part. Those dang text files are. I am not even sure what they are written in. To me it doesn't even resemble any languages I have come across. Anyone out there? This thing would be bad to the bone with completely new personalities since Wowwee gave up on it too soon!

I just picked one up @ goodwill and agree it would be super cool. Unfortunately, mine has no files on it at all (the drive is blank when I plug in the USB cable) so it stays at "loading" with the progress bar at 0 even with a fresh vivo file in there. Does yours load a personality? If so, do you mind letting me know if there are more files in there besides the vivo?
If I can get mine to work I bet I could get some of the dev's at work to figure out the text file.

The original file was called Max_Simon.vivo. If yours has no files, try getting the Mr. Personality software from the Wowwee website, and then the original file and push it back onto him via USB and the software. I looked and all I could see are the .vivo files. The .vivo files can easily be seen if you rename it to a .zip and extract it. Before loading though it needs to be changed back. That's how I was able to work with the .mp3 files, but it does take the software to push it back onto him and then go into settings to pick a personality to load. If it is the only personality it should load automatically if the file is original and not corrupted. If you need either of the files, let me know and I will post them for you. That would be awesome to get someone to take a look at these files and let us know what we need to do. I know there are a lot of people out there with these sitting in closets because of the great support they threw and it, not. It's up to us now!

Holy crap, I thought I was the only one who had this issue! Mine's been down for nearly 5 years by now; I happened to shut Mr. P off in the middle of recording a voice memo, and when I turned him back on he had the exact same symptoms with the loading screen as you mentioned. Now I made a topic on Robocommunity shortly after but all that was suggested in that thread didn't work at all. I don't know if I was doing anything wrong but after all this time it still doesn't work. It really disappoints me because this is actually a really cool robot that I always wanted to load up with my own personalities... and then it conks out.
If anyone could help figure out how to get this guy working, I'd be really grateful.
