I decided to try and make a custom boot animation. after i finished creating my boot animation i followed the instructions from nookdevs to apply it to the nc, it still didnt work. I used adb shell and started the boot animation, it didnt start, but im not sure what the problem is because i did it with a premade one, it worked fine. plz help me. I have attached the file if you want to look at it and see if anything is wrong. One problem that may be causing it not to work is that the pictures may be too big, but im not sure. Plz help
I couldn't get it to work either. Hope someone chimes in to help.
Okay, I think I see the problem. You have part 1 set up in portrait mode and part 0 is set up in landscape mode. I could be wrong, but I think you can only do it in portrait mode. Which is 600x1024 images.
Another issue is your desc.txt which is supposed to be 3 lines. When I looked at yours it was all on 1 line. If it uses the EOL as suggested by Nookdevs, then that would be another issue.
thnx...ill try that. but about the landscape, the phiremod 6.1 or 6(i cant remember) boot animation was landscape. :/
k i did what you said. I changed the pictures to portrait mode, and changed the desc.txt to three lines. You can try but for me it still didnt work when i put it in. when i ran adb shell and typed startbootanim. It just came back to the homescreen.
Okay, I don't think I was making myself clear as I didn't notice any change. So I made the adjustments myself and this works.
I tried uploading it like six fricken times and XDA keeps timing out on a 22k file. So if you shoot me an PM here with your e-mail address I'll send it to you and like I said...tested and it works.

this is what i came up with in a quick session, i think there is much room for improvement. if anybody likes to contribute, i would be glad for creative support
apply the zip as update.zip, make a nandroid backup before just in case. to make it easier to revert i attached a zipfile with the original files in them to revert to original, one with the sounds activated, one silent.
please tell me what you think
Hello,
do you have any screenshot of the boot or video?
Just extract the gif files and open them in IE or firefox. They'll play the anim. Very funny
thats quite funny
Lol
You are completely cool!
Thank you for this Bootscreens.
Now, Hero Booting isn't pain anymore!
glad you liked it. stay tuned for next version, already working on a progress bar... won't be out before weekend i guess.
still looking for a fingerprint scanner animation.
Nice one Thou i kinda miss my androids popping up everywhere. Would it be cool if you had a Android face popping down from the top of the screen?

for now i found a way to edit the files in inkscape, one layer per frame, exporting them to .xcf keeping the layers, and then use gimp to convert to animated gif. works, but is a lot of footwork... but i guess as i am trying to make a rather "complex" (at least for a gif) animation it just is a lot of footwork...

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me out. I dig your boot animation, and it's inspired me to make my own (OK, I'm just stealing the old "Cylon Eye" animation from the pre-release days.) Anyway, I've got the animation zip installed and working, however it seems like the phone is ignoring the frame delay. The animation seems to be going as fast as the phone can handle. So maybe there's a setting on the animated GIF that I'm not applying. Are there any specific settings you applied to your gifs?
Here's what I've got right now:
Code:
Interlace: No
GIF Comment: No
Loop Forever: Yes
Delay between frames where unspecified: 10ms
Frame disposal where unspecified: "I don't care" (other options are Combine and Replace)
Use Delay entered for all frames: Yes
Use Disposal entered for all frames: Yes
These settings are in GIMP. If you could help me figure this out, I'd greatly appreciate it.

set that value to a higher number, try 100ms. this specifies the general frame delay, you can set per-frame delays in the name of the frame. for example:
"Frame#1" is the layer name, make it
"Frame#1(500ms)" to make the delay half a second long.
(if that doesn't work try to google it, i am not 100% sure about the syntax)
would you mind sharing that animation you are talking about?
btw: work is still ongoing here, nuclear power now has a colored progress bar, but it is getting complicated handling 150+ layers in inkscape...

Yeah, I realized that my math was off with the delay, after noticing yours was 500ms. I'm going to try a couple other things to get it smoother as well. The stock boot animation has a small animated gif in the middle of the screen with a black background, so I imagine the phone can handle that easier than a full 480x320 animation, so that's my next step. I was actually just about to post my animation in a separate thread, so I'll link that post here when I've done that.
EDIT: My initial attempt is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583094
There's still work to be done, so don't judge me to hard!

ok thanks for the quick reply
thats weird... I just flashed my hero with your bootscreen but it doesn't show up on booting.?

What I would like to see for a bootscreen on the Hero is an animation of a Stargate locking in the seventh chevron then the splash coming out to encompass the entire screen. As it recedes back to the gate it leaves the word "ANDROID" in the event horizon overlaying the puddle effect then have four little green android characters with P-90s run through the gate before the animation ends.
Any takers on creating this? I don't know enough about creating video and effects to even get started on something like this.
Dude u read my mind...that would be awesome.. massive stargate fan here..lol
Intresting..... i will follow this thread
I'd be willing to toss out $20 (maybe more if it's a really high quality job) if there are any experienced graphics designers out there who could make this happen.
if anyone knows how to do it it is tristan202...
Does this help????
Woops,... 2 mins,... Cant use .rar,.... try again,....
OK,... here goes again.
I was previously advised (by Tristan202 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645244) that the Hero 1st plays one gif just once, then loops another... So.. Each ZIP file contains 2 gifs,... one of the "puddle" in action,... one of just the outro,...
All are 320x180 resolution,...
Latency setting on BEST was set to 50ms...
Latency setting on MED was set to 75ms...
Latency setting on LOW was set to 100ms...
Now need to find an simple method to apply them. I'll leave it to you guys to do the research for me aswel. Get cracking and let me know,....
Peace
Shizzle,..... I've just re-read the 1st post,.... And realised what I've supplied isn't quite what you wanted!!!!!
But it is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
Its just the "puddle" taken as it is, no custom characters and stuff.
Sorry,...
Found this,... But still dont know where the hell to begin!!!!!

S01 Ep04 !!! Haha.
Yeah I made them, using "Video-AVI to GIF Converter". Didn't take long at all.
Unfortunately I can't open ZIP files at work, so I can't see exactly what you've posted, but if it's what I'm thinking that's still sweet.
Once I get home (and figure out how to switch out boot screens) I'll probably be using this , thanks ddot!

[KITCHEN][MARCH 25 '10] HTC Android Basic Kitchen, v0.25 - for Beginners! [PC / MAC]
I haven't given it a try myself yet though.
I had a go at this and I'll show you how far I got (see attached update.zip for flashing through recovery rom).
I'm new to making bootscreens, but I studied a few I downloaded and learned how to sign an update zip. (Can't seem to generate my own pem/pk8 key files, when trying to apply the zip signed with my key it keeps saying that the files are unsigned, but the testkey files included with the signapk zip I grabbed work fine to sign). Also I didn't use zipalign, haven't worked out how yet, or is that only done on APK files?
Anyway, I noticed when I used GIF files that use pixel cropping (leaving out unchanged pixels in subsequent frames) the image gets all distorted, like a TV broadcast signal problem. So the resulting GIF files are larger than the originals, as each frame is a full frame.
However there is still a problem with some frames in the first GIF, still some distortions, although nowhere near as bad as on my first try with cropped frames... Also I don't really like the way the 2nd GIF loops as you can clearly see when it jumps from last frame, to first frame...

I am planning on trying to teach myself and make some more tonight using Photoshop instead of the automated software I used last time,.... But what Id like to know is,... As it is,... Does it play landscape, stretched across the whole screen?.... If it does then the issue is just the resolution (as I sized it to play in in the middle of the screen in portrait mode) and in theory should be easy enough to resolve (once I know how to use Photoshop that is).... Let me know please.
Thanks.
No, it shows portrait, vertically centered (so 150px high black bars above and below the animation). You wouldn't hold your phone sideways while booting, so it seemed awkward to rotate the files 90degrees.
Basically the only problem is the "glitching" in the first GIF. I'll have another go at that one later. I think it's to do with palette compression.
Also, I used your 'BEST' zip, so I'll see about quality/size difference with the other ones.

When you say "glitching",... do you mean it doesn't play smooth yeah,... a bit jerky?
If that is what you mean then yeah, the other ones might play smoother. This might be because there are so many frames in the BEST one. The lower quality ones have less frames so can be processed faster.
Even if I just open them on my lappy in internet explorer, the best quality one doesn't play as nice as the lower one.
So the update.zip that you create,... Does that just put the files in the right place and tell the phone what files to open up when booting? Or do you have to add the black bars, tell it to play landscape or portrait, make it play only once/not loop etc,....
That's something I'd like to be able to do too.

No, I mean it glitches like a bad tv signal. I don't really know how to describe it. You can however safely flash the update.zip I posted to see what I mean. You can always flash back a stock bootscreen (with or without sound); I've attached them to this post (grabbed these off of xda myself a while ago).

Just unzip my zip file and peruse the files. That will tell you a great deal. You can delete the following three files, as they are created by the signing process:
META-INF\CERT.RSA
META-INF\CERT.SF
META-INF\MANIFEST.MF
This file contains the command to copy the files to the SYSTEM: volume on your device:
META-INF\com\google\android\update-script
And this file tells Android how and which files to display:
system\media\bootscreen\boot_animation.xml
There's 3 bootconfigs in that file, but the top and bottom one are commented out (could've deleted them, but oh well). So the middle bootconfig is the one to play around with. The ScreenX and ScreenY values are offsets from top left corner of screen in portrait mode. And useAudio tells android to play or not play the mp3 file (none included in my zip).
EDIT: The black "bars" are there, because as specified in the xml, it uses a GIF file that's 320x480, fully black, and the other 2 gifs are smaller, displayed on top of that black background.
If you wanted to have this animation play in landscape mode, you just need to physically rotate the GIF files 90 degrees right (or left) and resize the animation to make it fit the screen. If you make it 480px wide, then it would be 270px high, so that'd leave 320-270=50px of blackness. Vertically centering the animation would mean a ScreenX value of 25 and a ScreenY value of 0. Or leave both at zero to have the animation stay at the top of the screen in landscape mode. That way you have one black bar, at the bottom, 50px high. Make sense I hope?
One more thing: the update-script and xml file need to be saved in UNIX ASCII format. Use a text editor like UltraEdit (shareware) or Notepad++ (opensource freeware) if you're on Windows.
hi im using ubuntu linux 9.10 karmic and i just noticed that for some reason my draw9patch tool is not working...i tried to launch from terminal and it gave this error that said something about:
/usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtk.rc:51 invalid token
it worked last time i used it, now all of a sudden its on the fritz...i tried a system restart and still not working, the window pops up but its just blank white window, doesnt do anything...anybody got any ideas?

Re: Draw9patch not working all of a sudden?
Mines stopped working also when I switched themes on Karmic.
Sent from my T-Mobile G1 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
thats funny thats what i thought it was telling me and i dont know why that would have anything to do with draw9patch. the only thing i can think of is that i changed the color of the input boxes from white to grey (easier on the eyes) and that is the only thing ive changed since it worked last. maybe the draw9patch cant handle any other color b/g but white? if this is the case then i need to file a bug report bc i dont like having everything white it kills my eyes...ill see what i can find out about this...thanks for your input...
EDIT: i changed the input box color back to white and nothing changed, still not working. i updated tools thru SDK manager and still same result. must be something else. the error code i received told me the error was on line 51 of gtk.rc file. that line says:
Code:
fg[NORMAL] = @fg_color
and that doesnt tell me anything bc i still have no clue why my theme is messing with draw9patch.

havnt seen this error myself or tried this, but here an idea for the solution.
if im understanding the error correctly, its saying that it doesnt know what @fg_color is, so why do you try chnaging that to an absolute value (ie. #FFFFFF) and see what happens?
Just my 2c
Eliot
ok, first off the actual error says:
Code:
Error: lexical error or unexpected token, expected valid token.
so on line 9 of gtkrc those colors are defined:
Code:
gtk_color_scheme = "fg_color:#101010\nbg_color:#E6DDD5\nbase_color:#FFF\ntext_color:#1A1A1A\nselected_bg_color:#8F5F4A\nselected_fg_color:#FFF\ntooltip_bg_color:#F5F5B5\ntooltip_fg_color:#000"
i notice "fg_color", unlike the rest, is NOT preceded by a "\n" i changed this and it didnt seem to help but im going to restart and see if that helps...if not ill prolly change it back till i can figure it out. back after the restart....
EDIT: Okay that did nothing as far as i can tell. any other ideas?
EDIT: found this thread at ubuntu forums...
i tried switching back to 1.6 and lo and behold draw9patch worked fine...switched back to 1.5 again and draw9patch no longer worked...
its funny how google made it so that the build system will only run on jvm 1.5, but every other android tool wont run right on 1.5 so you keep having to switch back and forth between 1.5 and 1.6...
OK so the solution to this problem seems to be if your draw9patch doesnt work, then you need to switch your jvm by doing
Code:
sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun
hope this helps for anyone else who has this problem...

Just wanted to share for anyone that hasn't tried it yet.
download image to pc> email yourself the image> open the image on your phone thru your email and save as wallpaper. done

i love the red dog wall paper... as he is pooping apple LOGO..
I dont know if im doing something wrong, which i highly doubt, but i have tried making a transparent wallpaper multiple times. I have done alot of different methods, but when i send it to my phone, the email will recognize that it is a PNG, download it but when i save it as wallpaper the transparency is lost. Any ideas?
Mine used too, but now I'm running the latest update it doesn't seem to work... can we get this confirmed
Nice post, will try these tonight!
Tried it but doesn't work. Didn't try it before the update so dunno if it's something i'm doing wrong but probably not, followed the Vid tut to the letter.
Edit: Thanks guys I got it working: I used your advice and I also realized that the desc.txt file was renamed wrong so it looked like desc.txt.txt instead of just one .txt.
Hey, I'm new to this whole boot animation thing.
But here's the deal:
I used photoshop cs5 to make my .png files.
I have done a little research on how to edit the desc.txt file, and
I can't seem to figure out whats wrong.
I use root explorer and paste the bootanimation.zip into /system/media
and I've even tried it in /data/local and all i get when I boot up is a black screen. I can boot into my phone perfectly and I've tried bootanimations so I know it works, I think I have just messed up on my own bootanimation.
would anyone care to check it out or give me some tips? anything would be appreciated.
p.s. I have been using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623960 and i also have an Evo 4g.
Thanks again!
You cannot use any compression when zipping. You can only store the files.
Remove the extra blank lines inbetween the text, leaving one blank line under the last line of text. When you zip, don't compress the images, compression level should be set to Store.
i´d be really interested in an abstergo bootanimation...i´m huge assassin´s creed fan
Glad you got it working. Also make sure you haven't got any of those pesky thumbs.sb files in there. They cause a black flash at the end of each loop.
