Is there any reliable information about when the official froyo update is coming from rogers? I read some random post saying that that it is coming in mid-December (i.e. now), or some others saying mid January. I'm inclined to believe the later date, however if somebody some concrete information it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Given Rogers track record on timing of products whether they be for software updates or product releases, I wouldn't trust any source reliable or not. Sometimes its just best to say... 'you'll get it when it's available'
I've realized that a 'no-expectations' approach is often the best when it comes to Rogers.

Hey everyone, I kind of have a question that might be hard to answer. But maybe one of you can speak from experience with Rogers and android phones in general. Well my question is this. When the Rogers Captivate comes out later this month will the method of rooting be the same as the at&t version for the most part? I also wonder if there is a chance (maybe this has happened to other android phones in the past?) that Rogers will be a gigantic wiener and make it IMPOSSIBLE to root it at all?
Disregarding my questions for a second, it's a pleasure to finally join this forum and thanks for taking the time to read this.
Cheers!
First off, welcome to XDA, glad to have you with us.
Now onwards with your question. It's almost impossible, maybe even illegal, for a carrier to block rooting on an Android device. The whole point of these phones is OPEN SOURCE. The rooting method should be almost identical for the most part. Because we don't have Rogers here, nobody can truly say for sure, but I'd imagine it would be the same.
Oh, that's really interesting! Thanks
Hey,
The phone releases this Monday and the model number for the Rogers version is SGH-i896 whereas the ATT version is SGH-i897. Some files would need to be updated but nothing major. Hopefully we get the support for the Rogers Captivate and can flash it with the awesome custom ROMS

Welcome to you as well! I'm not so sure that any files would have to be updated. As long as the hardware is exactly the same, all should be well.

The update scripts have the model number in them which would have to be updated. Nothing major.
Interesting, for roms and such it does not sound like too much of a hassle. But maybe having the exact same hardware wasn't necessarily for the best. I got kind of excited with hopes that this new Captivate would be capable of handling 3.5G I think it's referred to HSPUA+ (Don't quote me on that!) Does anyone know if this is the case?
On a side note, do any current or upcoming phones support 3.5G on the Rogers network?
According to HTC, Gingerbread upgrade for Incredible S will be on June for Singapore.
"Dear Alexander,
Thank you for contacting HTC.
With reference to your query, Incredible S may receive upgrade to Android 2.3 in June this year.
Thank you for your continuous support of our products and services. Should you require further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
We look forward to be of service to you again"
That's pretty slow, my opinion.
Better late than never? LOL
June....I hoping we got the update in April. I guess June is about right. These next 2 months the phone should be out there more in one variation or another in the Canada, the States and some more places overseas.
In my opinion to HTC's reply is earliest is June.

True ....
If it will be as with the Hero, then the update will be released at Christmas time, at best
This has alreayd been posted before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1014937
and I'll say what I said there again. Customer services just give a generic date, until HTC make an official announcement, they don't know anymore than we do. I have already seen a couple of leaks of the GB rom floating about (nothing that can be publicly released or flashed due to NDA's) but I can't see any reason for it not being sooner
When it launches as the droid incredible 2 here in the states it will have gingerbread pre-loaded, so there would be no excuse to not have the INCs on GB before that, verizon ad's a ton of crapware to the device and not to mention cdma vs. gsm, we should get gingerbread before the Dinc2, at least I hope so.
There is a petition going on as you may know and we need 95 more signatures to force at&t and LG to release the update !
(use one more w as im not permitted to put external links)
ww.change.org/petitions/att-wireless-lg-thrill-gingerbread-update
Thanks you.
Wait, why would 95 more change their mind and the complaint isn't exactly that they won't release it but that they're not done with it. My experience with Rogers GB is that if ours is anything like this I don't want it. They need to get their act together and actually work on it so it's ready for release. I don't know where you heard a specific number of signatures would achieve that but I hope your right and I hope you get them.
UPDATE: Signed.
Actually number is important for change.org. The web site says 405 signatures out of 500. According to my knowledge they submit the petition once they receive a predefined number of signatures.
Correct me if im worng. According to LG, at&t has to request for the update.
Sent from my LG-P925 using XDA App
Ok, so this isn't the first petition I've signed on this matter so I can only assume the other got submitted and didn't accomplish anything. Yes, the update is entirely up to ATT, LG will host it on their website if ATT wants them to. I was just wondering what made you think 500 signatures would make ATT do anything. Hopefully these are all getting them to move their asses. I'm having serious BB issues with the Rogers GB on my ATT Thrill.
Hello everyone!
After unsuccessfully attempting to flash the oldest available firmware onto my P7300, and having gotten its display dead due to an old bootloader being contained in there, through bringing it back to life.... I decided to do some research on the GSM calling functionality that was available in early pre-release units of the P7300.
There wasn't much to discover. We have all seen the notorious gsmarena.com video, showing the P7300 dialling a number from the contacts app.
Code:
/watch?v=7acOtSX6Foc&hd=1#t=1m35s
I tried contacting gsmarena themselves to no avail. I researched the website's ownership and it even turned out that the website is hosted on a server in Chicago, USA but the organization that pays for it is... wait for it... ARENA KOM OOD. That OOD is the bulgarian equivalent of what germans label as GmBH (Gesellschaft mit begrenzter Haftung). So i searched the Bulgarian national trade registrar and found the company sitting there with contact information. Unfortunately there has been no response from them either.
So I went back to YouTube and watched a bunch of hands-on videos for the Tab 8.9 hoping to see someone open the Settings > About menu.
And voila, I found one. Basically you can see that the tablet has a Call settings entry in the menu and later on you are presented with an HD view of the software build number and kernel version.
Code:
/watch?v=SsUoU966DdE&hd=1#t=1m57s
Since I am no developer, and I am also not yet able to post to development sections, I am seeking assistance for getting someone who knows his way around Samsung' s source code involved.
Perhaps if the source code for Honeycomb as early as 3.0.1 is available, someone can compile it and extract the modem.bin or any other part necessary to support 2G Network voice calling.
How come...
Hasn't anyone anywhere in the world ever dumped a pre-release unit's firmware to make it available for the public before launch?

These arent very popular devices, so I wouldnt count on it.
Well then...
...where did all the review units and the ones from shows that had the functionally go? Don't the reviewers who receive them get to keep them or do they return them to the manufacturer?
So, there are always a lot of forum threads where people complain they haven't got the update yet, but i want to know if anyone knows how they work. I don't really want guesses, but maybe someone knows something from Sony on how the updates, especially via the PC companion software, work. What i do know is this:
1) It's not by model number - my C6903 doesn't have 4.3 yet
2) It's not by country - other ppl in the Netherlands have posted getting theirs
I don't care too much about OTA, i could imagine that's a staged rollout based on carriers and bandwidth, so there are a lot more variables. As a developer, i also get the concepts of slowly pushing stuff out, but what i don't get is why it'd be a staged rollout via the PC Companion, and I don't see a pattern of the staged rollout.
Any ideas?
G
I can only part answer in the case of carriers. Firmware is given to the carrier, they need to test it and then approve it, make any changes they need (bloatware usually). Once that's been done its then sent back to Sony to roll out. I know that Samsung will release updates in bulks of IMEI numbers, not sure if Sony also uses this method. I know its only a part answer, sorry couldn't be more help.
