[Q] Screen blacks when you open or close the keyboard. - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For about four days now the screen will go to a dark horizontal lines when you open or close the screen/keyboard. If I turn the screen off and back on it, will be back to normal. Running stock 1.6 non rooted.

Sounds like a loose connector that gets knocked out of place and then snaps back into place when the keyboard finishes opening. I doubt you're still in warranty, so that's not an option. Does it happen even if you open/close it gently?

Sounds like a definite hardware issue. You can try taking the phone apart, I did it with a guide, not very difficult. I had to reconnect a disconnected daughter-motherboard cable. The screen is a ***** to take apart but it might be worth it if its affordable to get a newer phone.

The screen went blank after about 2 weeks of this and won't turn on whatsoever. I replaced the motherboard/to display ribbon cable and it didn't fix the issue. Is there any other fix or should I sell it?

Hinge Failure? Portrait mode F'd

Morning,
Yesterday I was using my phone as normal, texting, sent a message, closed the screen, and it went all white. I opened it again, stayed all white. With the screen open, I pressed "end" to lock the phone, then unlocked and it was fine. Closed the screen again and it went white again with RGB lines all over it.
When the screen is closed, it will not show the screen other than with RGB lines all over it. If I have the screen closed and locked, slide it open, which automatically unlocks the screen, it displays fine. Or, if I leave the screen open, let the screen time out, or lock it manually, then unlock it with Menu+Menu, then it works fine.
So basically, it's F'd when the screen is closed. But when it's open, or slid open to unlock, then it's fine. Also, when I slode it 90% closed, it will switch to portrait mode and display fine. But when I close it 100% and the slide channel on the back of the screen hits the two metal contacts at the top of the channel, it goes jacked.
Any help would be appreciated. I really don't want to have to replace this phone....again.
Oh, I read the threads of the ribbon coming loose, but I don't know if this applies to my situation.
My phone just started doing this exact thing today. I am unrooting and exchanging under warranty...
Looked thru the ribbon thread and it doesn't appear to be the same thing...
It was fine one second and the next it was totally f'd. I'm sad...
But you will be happy for another year or so when you get your replacement.

This is true but I'll remain annoyed when I can't figure out what caused it, Lol. I'll just have to keep researching...
And just when my phone was doing so well

Arc Slider Mode (Landscape) - Blank Screen !!!!

The screen goes blank when I slide the arc slider to landscape mode. I hard reset the machine and it seems to do the same thing. The keyboard lights up, there is a lighted black screen, but no image. So, the back light is illuminating when in landscape, but not image is populating at all. That would lead me to think it isn't a power distribution issue when the arc slider is activated. It's just that the image isn't showing up at all. This started happening 2 days ago. I have the latest original UK ROM xxx010 loaded.
I have to use the phone in portrait only. I am unable to use the hard keybard as there is no image when the arc slider is opened.
WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS???

Exactly. My one got this problem, and it degenerated into the screen turning itself off, even in portrait mode.

thats correct! I had the same problem, sent my X1 to SE service center to get it fixed...they fixed it and i got it back in five days
Worn out flex cable. Same thing happened to me after only having my phone for about 5 months. Sent my phone out to SE and it took them about a month to get it back to me. Hopefully they have that part in stock if not expect to wait a looonng time.
If your phone isn't under warranty anymore you could always try to fix it yourself. You can buy the part @ http://cnn.cn/shop/sonyericsson-xperia-slider-flex-cable-p-6874.html
I would only do the latter if it's your only option.

Agreed. I've done my own repairs on my X1 and I can tell you that the Flex cable is not an easy part to get to.
The entirety of the back portion of the phone (which houses the battery, main PCB, rear camera & keyboard) needs to be dismantled before you can get to the screws which connect the back portion to the front (touchscreen) portion of the device.
Additionally, the ribbon cable itself is very awkward to re-attach to the back portion of the phone once you have it installed in the front portion!
In other words, it's the kind of problem I'd leave to the repair guys unless you're a sucker for punishment!
mine died today... ****, this is the last "sony" phone (althrough it's made by HTC) I buy... meanwhile, I'll try changing the flex and see if it survives.
back to my old P3300, still working like day one.

Funny thing is that when i manually puts x1 into landscape mode, the screen works again..... does this mean my x1 has a hardware problem, not a software? If anyone knows, pleaes contact [email protected]
i had the same problem. ant the SE service "worked on it" for so long that by the law they have to give me a new phone (45+ days). they just called me yeaterday supposedly they are getting me X2.

Cannot use touchscreen with keyboard out

I don't know when it started but I'm quite sure that I used to be able to use the touchscreen with the keyboard extended. I am running the latest hboot and radio with the cyanogen nightlies and newest pershoot kernel.
Is anybody have this problem?
Perhaps I just need to reflash radio and hboot but its weird because it works fine with the keyboard closed.
Thanks for your help.

Your definitely supposed to be able to use the touchscreen when the keyboards out, That's how I use my phone most of the time. I think it's a hardware problem to me like some cable to the touchscreen got messed up so when you open up your keyboard it gets disconnected, but I really don't know could be wrong. Also, I don't see how reflashing hboot or the radio will fix it, as far as I know they don't affect the touchscreen at all.

As "Ianlikescake" Said its hardware not software. I work in a second hand phone shop & the most common problem with the G1 (Apart from people abusing this beautiful device) is a ribbon cable tears in the back when the screen has been opened & closed a lot.
Normally when it goes the touch screen goes completely but we have had one customer when the same thing happened to him as in your situation, We sent the phone off to be repaired & all they did was replace the cable
So re flashing the radio & hboot wont fix it, Sorry!

My phone has a problem not really similar but it still has to do with the screen. When i lock the phone and when I try to unlock it when the screen is down the screen doesn't turn on. But when I flip the screen up the screen turns on. Once I unlock the phone the screen works fine i flip it back down and it works untill it locks. So do you think it's a problem with the ribbon cable?

I think I have a similar issue. Whenever I have the keyboard closed, the screen will not turn on when you press the end-key. Only the LED lights will turn on. When you flip the keyboard out, the screen turns on and the phone is functional.
Over the next few weeks, I then realized that this only happens when the phone's keyboard is completely closed. If you leave the keyboard out 1cm or so (to the point where you can only see the spacebar), you can turn on the phone. Check to see if it works for you.

That used to work for me but now the problem got worse. Sometimes even when the keyboards out the screen doesn't turn on so I have to mess with the screen for a little bit till it works. Now I know it's the cable that's messed up. I think the reason it's like this is from repetitive flipping out the screen. I gotta be more careful next time if i can fix it.

[Q] Faulty Proximity sensor,is there a way to actually disable it?

Hey guys, sorry for bringing this up.
Whenever i dial, screen goes black and doesn't come back on.
If i place it flat on a table, then it gets lit but as soon as i rotate the device it goes black again.
My HD7 recently started having this problems...
It started happening after i replaced the micro sd inside with a bigger one.
So my concern is that somehow it moved or got dust when i removed the back plastic cover? Where is it placed anyway?
I tried hard resetting 2 times but nothing works. It would be cool if there was a registry or app to take control of it. Can somebody help?
PS. i cannot send it back because i live in Albania (no official htc shops either around here)
Thanks!
Hello,
The proximity sensor is located on the top left of the device, you can see it when viewed under a bright light. Have you applied any screen protectors which can interfere with them? Replacing the sd card should not have any effect on the proximity sensor. When you rotate the device when the call is placed, the screen should go black by default cause of the sensor
@rhn thank you for your reply.
My phone does not have any screen protector or cover of any kind. Also,if i rotate it while in call it still remains black. As soon as i press the call button, screen goes black and wont come back until the call is ended by the person on the other side.
Really really annoying... Oh sometimes it even flashes after the call has ended...
Sounds like a hardware fault ...have you tried updating your rom?You can find a compatible rom in the rom development subforum..
Yep,tried that too. Just updated today and still the same issue.
It also happened after i changed the micro sd,so maybe something has moved in there. There's no other way than try to open the device and check it out,i guess :/
If you can think of something else, let me know
Warranty

LCD Screen replacement

Thought this was going to be an easy repair. Obtained a new screen from Repair Universe (Really quick). Followed the video and several take apart guides. Put the phone back together, turned it on, Get the Motorola Logo screen, bottom keys light up and then the screen goes blank, Have to pull the battery to shut it down. SO, I put the old screen back in, turned it on, Motorola Logo again and the then the screen dims to where you can hardly see what's there, but it goes through the boot process. Anybody have any ideas as to what the hell I did to screw it up? Swapped the screens around several times hoping I'd remember something and magic would happen but no such luck!! Thanks, Howie
Replacing the Bionic's LCD is one of the simplest phone repairs I've ever done. It's possible you got a faulty screen, or it's possible that the LCD is not your problem. I've purchased from them a few times but never had a problem...might want to check what their return policy is.
Yeah, plug and play! Should have taken 30 minutes tops? What has me puzzled is the old screen dims right out now so I screwed something up? Sorta hoping this happened to someone else ans they figured it out before I send it in for repair.....

Couple questions I had which may help clarify a few things, and could help in troubleshooting or finding someone who had a similar problem..
Why are you replacing the screen, was the screen dimming before you tried the replacement or only after?
Are you running stock blur or are you rooted/rom'd?
Information like that can go a long way to diagnosing the actual problems.
It's rooted and it's not a stock rom. I bought the phone and the LCD screen was damaged, so I ordered a replacement. I could still use it with the damaged screen but it had several white lines going down it. I rooted the phone and loaded a different rom before I switched screens and it was fine until I switched lcd's.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
It's probably a faulty LCD in that case, as long as the old LCD is working as it was. If not then perhaps you damaged the back light circuit.
The old screen doesn't work anymore. Correctly anyway. The old screen is real dim?
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
I would have to agree with brandogg, could be the back light that is having the problem and that is why the old broken LCD is going dim now.
I'm assuming that the dimness problem occured only after the install of the replacement LCD since you only mentioned the lines as being the original problem.
One thing you could check is if the auto brightness is enabled. I would disable that and set the brightness as high as it will go and see if you still have the dimness issues.
That's when the dimness started on the old screen, after I installed the new one. I'll try to check the brightness after work. Thanks for the idea. I'll post back.
