Hi
I have the international galaxy s, i9000, which had the JPO stock firmware, it was also rooted using Z4root. All was fine until yesterday when I uninstalled an app, after re-booting the phone was semi-bricked. No problem I thought, re-flash... so I flashed to the latest JPU (2.2.1), no problem all ok, except the kernel is marked as rooted and now I can't un-root or re-root..? stuck..!
Any advice would be appreciated..? For instance, do I have to re-flash back to JPO and then install z4root then root / unroot or..????
Thanks
any ideas...???
I just fixed mine! I'll send you what I did as I was struggling with the same thing all evening!

Okay, first I used superoneclick to root it, then I used the recovery file and keys in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
and copied them to the correct directories using root explorer. I hope that helps!

When you just reflashed your phone to a new firmware, the kernel will always have the word 'root' inside. Not to worry because that's the original firmware kernel. You just root normally with z4root from then on

Also another thing: 2.2.1 does not support z4root to root your phone. You can use ryanza's OneClickLagFix to root 2.2.1.
Rooting 2.2 with z4root works just fine.

just run z4root, said running exploit etc.... then acquiring root shell.... then it exits on its own but the cpu is going 100% and nothing happens, no superuser nothing..?
If I go back into z4root there is just a crashed 'white screen' and all the while the cpu is still going crazy... If I go into the task manager it shows z4root as Phase1
Only after re-boot does the cpu return to normal..? but no superuser and no root..!
Is it definitely compatible with 2.2.1..?
any ideas..??
thanks
ah just seen your post... ok will try that, thanks
What about SuperOneClick..? would that work with 2.2.1..?

Hey,
I'm just wondering if there is a way to test if my phone is rooted or not? When I had Eclair on there, I did a lag fix, and rooted it. Later down the track I flashed a Froyo ROM onto my phone, didn't like that, so flashed back to stock Eclair. Tried another Froyo ROM, didn't like that either, so went back to stock Eclair again. I have recently flashed the stock Froyo rom that is on samfirmware.com, and I want to root it.
Under Kernel Version in About Phone, it says:
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #7
Does this mean my phone is already rooted? I don't have the superuser app, nor do I have the root explorer app, so I am very confused as to the state of my phone at the moment..
Can someone please help?
P.S. The reason I want to root is I want it done before I apply [KERNEL] SpeedMod Froyo 339MB RAM XXJPX-Compatible, and I thought it would be best to have the phone rooted first...
Thanks
Denno
U could try terminal and just tipp su or try root explorer

where can I get the free root explorer? The one in the market is like 3 bucks...
Good question i found it extremely helpfull so 3 bucks was ok for me.try terminal or perhaps u can find it out with androzip but i dunno how

You can try the app found in the market called z4root. It is able to check your phone whether it has root, and if your phone has not been rooted, you can apply root from that app too.
Cheers

Thanks mate. I searched the market but couldn't find it? there is no results for z4root?
Z4root isn't in the market anymore i think search it on this forum

If your phone is rooted you should have a app called SuperUser
Just found z4root in the forums, and put it on the phone.
I just opened it and pressed Permanent Root..
I know about having the superuser app, but my kernel version said root in it, so I was confused..
My phone has just restarted, and i now have the Superuser app, so I'm guessing that it's worked. Again, I don't know how to test it, but I think I can now safely a.... well as I was writting this, something popped up asking for super user rights, so I'm very confident that my phone is now rooted.
Thanks for the help all!

Hello, i have a Nexus One, Android 2.2.1, build FRG83D.
I bought a 2nd hand one, it has installed te Superuser permission but seems not rooted, i mean i tried several tools like titanium backup, that need root acces and they didn't get it.
I tried get root acces with universal androot, it says that its already rooted, i try to root it again, it fails.
Im wondering what can I do, I was thinking in flashing to a original rom, not cooked, but im not sure if i need root acces to do that.
How can I delete Superuser permissions and root the phone properly?
I'm new in android and I'm getting a little lost here.
Thanks in advance.
Now I'm just a noob myself with this stuff too. It sounds like u got it 2nd hand if so I would find an ruu or what ever is required to get ur phone back to original out of the box state. Then try again. But make sure to get one that is rootable because I have seen ones that aren't.

Since you're on FRG83D, you can root with this method:

You probably are rooted. However, some root apps (like Titanium Backup) require busybox to be installed as well as being rooted (otherwise those apps will give you an error saying you are not rooted, even though you are). Just install busybox from the market, and you should be fine.

You don't need to flash a cooked ROM if you don't want. Just flash a pre-rooted stock ROM, like this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968396

I suspect it was rooted, but got an OTA update at some point, losing root, but keeping the Superuser apk and possibly even su and busybox, but without the necessary privileges...

Then you are not rooted. You just have the Superuser application installed on your phone (does not give root access). Re-root like danger-rat indicated.
EDIT: danger-rat beat me to it!
Just Rooted my phone, following the method danger-rat posted here.
Thanks a looot!

Get SuperOneClick v1.8beta under @ Android Apps and Games. It can root and/or market fix. Read my post towards the end for instructions on how to make it work.

O used the SOV on the SGT without any issues. All good thanks!
Maybe you refuse access to root and you remember your choice.
Try to go in superUser application and give TB root access.

I just rooted my Tab using z4root 1.3.0
Phone rebooted as superuser.
Installed Clockworkmod and installed AT&T recovery rom.
Worked perfectly for my unlocked AU tab i picked up this morning.
Allowed me to do a rom backup...and still reports rooted.
Months ago I was rooted but stupidly allowed the OTA update for 2.2.2. Now my phone has been unrooted and recently I have switched to a different OG Droid on the same 2.2.2 frg83g build. Can anyone help me root my device? I have tried using super one click and a version of z4root.
My idea would be to downgrade to 2.2.1 and then root and bounce back to 2.3.5 which I read was out. Only problem with this is finding the right update.zip file and then how I would go about rooting from there.
I would like to re-root to hold me down until my next phone which wil be sometime this fall....droid bionic cough cough.
Is there anyone who could help?
My phone is a Motorola Droid (Verizon) on android 2.2.2 FRG83G build.
P.S. When I used SuperOneClick the program did not respond and would always get stuck on waiting for device. I toggled the usb debugging on and off after several attempts. HELP WOULD BE SO MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!
Try z4root or universal androot.

Universal Androot version 1.6.1 (I believe) failed. It looked like it was going to work and then got to generating root script and went to failed. Z4root would also just click me back to the homescreen. Reason as to why?

Other required phone setup settings...
In addition to checking USB Debugging, I also checked:
Settings -> Applications -> Unknown sources
Settings -> Applications -> Allow mock locations
After this, running superoneclick worked.
Zup,
I rooted a while ago, and since i'm running Ubuntu i haven't managed to get CWM yet, so i noticed that i can use Odin Mobile Pro to do it so i installed it and downloaded the correct kernel. I opened OMP and browsed to find the kernel on the internal memory but i can't choose it (it's a .RAR-file), so i extract it to see what's hidden inside. According to Odin i can flash "zImage" so i do it. Big big mistake.
The phone won't boot now, and the only thing i get is the "Samsung Galaxy Note GT-N7000.
What to do?
Thanks in advance
I can enter Download mode, and that's it. Some help here please?
Use pc odin and flash a stock rom. You must be in download mode

Thanks.
Where can i find a stock ROM? And do i need ADB installed or is it OK with the drivers from Kies? I'm asking since i'm using Ubuntu so i'll have to use my brothers PC, so i can't install a freaking SDK.
Got a stock ROM now, downloaded the ADB files and Odin, so i'll see if that works..
You should just try to read a little more
Kies drivers should be fine. Go to the development forum and you will find stock roms thread.

Awesome. Downloading XXLA4 now, but it takes forever... 100KB/sek.. Horrible servers.. FML
Still downloading the ROM.. WHY in the sweet hell haven't anybody made a torrent or uploaded it to another place? 2 hours to download 550MB on a 20 Mbps connection is tragic..
Update: OK, i'm up and running again! Odin worked like a dream without any problems Thank you so much Indie!

you said downloading LA4.
Just make clear, LA4 wont Root directly, n looking to sequence, you are going to flash it with PC Odin. If i m correct
Just Downgrade to old version, get it Rooted, then update to LA4

Yeah, i noticed this when i had downloaded 300MB of LA4, so i didn't bother to stop it and select a rootable ROM I just wanted to get my Note working again. But i'm already missing root like crazy, so i think i'm gonna downgrade and root it again very soon.
Edit: Wait a minute.. I was rooted, i messed the phone up, flashed LA4, booted up the phone, nothing got wiped but i lost root.
ya it is nonwipe version so even with PC Odin, you won't lose anything BUT just ROOT
Aha!
But if i choose to flash another ROM with PC Odin, will i get the triangle at boot? Do i only get the triangle when i flash unofficial ROMs like CM9?
I'm a little unclear on these parts.
Sent from my iPad GT-N7000 using xda premium
No it won't give you triangle if you flash any stock ROM. It gives only when you flash custom(yes like rocket/CM9)
