Hi,
As my title suggests, I'm a bit new with all of this, and I'm still learning what is essential to do. I have downloaded ROM Manager, SuperUser, and a terminal. Is there anything else I forgetting to do? I know I should make a backup of what I am running now, but I am a bit uncertain of how to do so. Do I just use ROM Manager for that? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
First, flash ClockworkMod using ROM Manager. Then, reboot into recovery mode and select "reinstall packages". Once you have ClockworkMod installed, you can make a backup through ClockworkMod.
Download Odin3 one-click here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Then, install the drivers mentioned on the page. Odin3 is a very useful tool to get your phone back to stock if you brick it. Always flash back to stock with Odin3 and do a master clear with Odin3 before you flash a ROM.
When you want to flash a ROM, transfer the zip file to your internal sd card. Then, enter ClockworkMod and select the zip. ClockworkMod will then flash the ROM for you.
I hope that helps! Happy Flashing!
You should do a couple if things
Flash clockwork recovery
Open tom manager
Top option to flash clock work
Select captivate
Try to get into recovery
Turn phone off
Vol up & down & power, hold
Ar&t comes up, let go
Blue letters recovery
Volume down to scroll
reinstall packages power button to select
Phone boots
Repeat last two steps
Should boot into green letters clockwork recovery
reboot phone
Get into download mode
Power off
Remove bat, sim, and external sd
Plug usb into computer
Hold vol up & down, plug in usb
Should have orange android with shovel. You are in download mode. Pull battery reboot
Download this program (odin) if you have a windows pc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
If you do not have the usb drivers installed you can find them on that thread.
Once downloaded open program, put phone into download mode with odin open. One of the boxes should turn orange and say com 1 disconnect pull battery
Odin is the program you use to flag stock, or recover from bag flash.
If you can not do any of these steps don't flash, you could end up in trouble and not be able to recover
Flashing roms is easy
Download rom, place on internal sd
Get into clock work recovery
Select option to install zip from sd
Select option to find zip
Find rom file select
Confirm selection
Put the phone down and watch the magic
Always flash with full battery, sim removed, external sd removed
hope this helps

How do you exactly open the Odin file? It's a RAR extension.
winrar or 7zip. i recommend 7zip
I use winrar, 7 zip works as well. Both are free online
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Alright thanks for all your help. I used 7zip and was able to do all the steps correctly (Got to Odin, also can enter download mode), and backed up with TiBackup. So I flashed Assonance today and restored my apps, and it seems pretty nice. Thanks for all your help again.

Hi,
I read everything i could find and I still can't get anything to work properly on the phone.
Is there even a milestone wiki so i know which version my phone is?
I got the open recovery thing to work once, but i can't get it to work again, it keeps saying I have a cache error. what do i do?
also, when I install app2card, it totally ruins my phone, is that app meant for my phone?
I tried to install app2sd, but it keeps saying busy box permission failed something.
I got my phone thru ebay, how can i check the region?
I just know I have an unbranded milestone.
I google all these questions and nothing helpful comes up.
Can somone please tell me how to get into recover again?
Do i need to reflash it?
I only got into it once and installed the zip.
but when i try to run the zip again, i get an error.
If you have nandroid file in your sdcard, you can copy and paste (anything that is important to you) to your PC.
1. Take out your sdcard and pluck it to your PC if your Milestone cannot switch ON
2. Format your sdcard via PC
3. Extract G.O.T OpenRecovery v2.00 or Androidiani OpenRecovery 3.3 to the root of
your sdcard. (you'll see OpenRecovery folder and update.zip) Put the sdcard to your
Milestone and enter bootloader.(Press and hold volume up+camera key & power ON)
4. Open RSDlite and connect to your Milestone. Flash sbf to your Milestone, stock ROM
or 2.2.1 G.O.T beta version
Guide -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696845
5. Your Milestone will be switch ON after flashing sbf is done. Turn it OFF and enter
into recovery. Press X button and power ON. Once you see the triangle and '!',
press volume up and camera key.
6. You'll see Recovery 2e, all letters in blue, select update and the rest is your choice.
You can nandroid backup if your Milestone works as before and restore your previous nandroid that you copy to your PC.
Yes i did that the first time and it worked.
but how can i get into it again to make a backup?
thanks
You mean you still can't get into the recovery mode after formatting your sdcard? Even with the button combination:
PRESS AND HOLD 'X' AND POWER ON THE PHONE, LET GO ONLY AFTER YOU SEE THE TRIANGLE AND '!' MARK ???
I get to the triangle.
and it get to the recover menu. but when i press install the zip again.
an error message pops up.
do i need to redo step 3 and 4 everytime i want to go into recovery menu?
what open recovery u r using? GOT or androidiani?
if its GOT then try switchin to androidiani to check if the problem presist, vice versa.
report back here if there is any improvement.
one more question:
when u enter the bootloader menu (pressing the up dpad and power key) wat bootloader version it states there?
Thanks
I'll try it out tonight been a bit busy this week.
does Flash sbf do anything to my system?
for example, will i need to reflash my current rom after doing Flash sbf?
I know for the x10 mini pro, after doing update.zip i will need to reflash the rom.
is it the same for milestone?
I still can't get it to work.
here are my steps.
My phone is already rooted.
and I already flashed the Recovery-Only SBF when i installed the new rom. (do i need to redo this step? Maybe I'm using an outdated version?)
Can someone link me to the file if there is a better one, all the links are dead.
I am using this version: vulnerable_recovery_only_RAMDLD90_78
I downloaded this:
http://groupoften.wordpress.com/2010/10/22/new-g-o-t-openrecovery-v2-01-launched/
I put the files on the root of my SD:
OpenRecovery
OpenRecovery-CFG (do i need this?)
update.zip
I press the Up dpad and power, I get the triangle thing.
I press the install.zip and still cache error?
E:can't open /ache/recovery/command
I don't get what the readme in the GOT is telling me to do.
it says:
create a folder in /OpenRecovery/recoveries ( for example "My_OR_MOD" i don't use space in folder name, to avoid problems)
does that mean I make a copy of the "openrecovery" folder and put it back inside the "openrecovery" folder? that means every thing will be duplicated? is this correct?
thanks
I would try the androidiani, but i can not find the english guide.
Edit:
just tried androidiani, and I'm still getting E:can't open /ache/recovery/command
Trying to get CWM installed (to eventually get CM7 installed) on my friend's Captivate running stock 2.1-update1 to no avail. We have it rooted, we have ROM manager installed, but no matter what I do when it comes to flashing a recovery, it does not work. When I go to flash the update.zip, it says file is not found because it doesn't seem to be downloading anything at all. Any help?
EDIT: I think I got it, might have just been selecting the wrong option.....
If it doesn't work then try this. This will work. Btw rom manager does not play nice with captivates. I would not suggest it.
Download this: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
Then follow these instructions.
step 4: Install clockwork recovery.
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select. (you may have to do this twice to get it to work)
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu.

yeah we got it to work but thank you so very much for your instructions. My friend is basically amazed at the speed and flexibility of CM7 over that Eclair bloated it piece of garbage the stock rom is.
Wow... This Worked in July 2013
I pulled an old Captivate from the drawer that has Android 2.1-update (Eclair) on it and could not for the life of me recall how to get CWM Recovery so I can start installing some later ROMS.
The method you provided worked. Downloaded that file, put it into the phone's internal memory, root directory, changed name to update.zip, got into Samsung recovery, and on the SECOND try it installed CWM recovery.
Thanks.
I have cwm 6.0.3.6 installed. CWM website says 2.0.5.2 (or something close to that) is only available recovery.
How did I end up with 6.0.3.6? And should I flash 2.x.x.x?
Running 10.2 nightly.

You don't need to flash anything.
This is my bro's old phone, and he said it's rooted and it has CWM installed.
1. I wanted to install a new rom so I put the zip file in an SD card.
2. There's a Recovery mode option when you want to restart the phone
3. I wiped the cache and data/partition.
4. I tried searching for the zip file, but I couldn't find it.
5. So I turned off the phone and relocated the zip file to the root of the sd drive.
Now! I'm trying to load into recovery, but I can't.
Is it bricked????
I plugged it on the pc and it made a sound that detected the device.
Btw, I'm a total amateur at programming/rooting, so all the help in the simplest form would be very appreciated.
Please help, the phone is still good and I don't want it to go to waste. I wanna start using it! Any help is appreciated (including reference links to other posts/threads)
to come into recovery mode, pull your battery out and then in again. then hold volume up, home button and power on all together....hold them all 3 till Samsung S logo is gone or till Kernel logo appears, the you can led the power button free but hold the other 2 till you will be in recovery mode again.
In CWM do not search or tick for the update zip. Go over: install zip from internal sd card and then phone should show you the files which are included there. Hopefully device will show you the rom.zip you want to flash there too.
If not, then i recommend to search here in the forum, and take you some to read and inform you about next steps....here are some links for first and further informations:

I feel like I've tried everything. I installed the UVMA1 over-the-air update and have lost and am unable to regain root. I seriously need a solution to this.
Has anyone been able to root the most updated SGH-T879 with the UVMA1 build?

Flash the CWM recovery tar through Odin.
https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sYujqhSWDjt5I
After CWM has been installed, flash superusers through recovery.
https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/3sRc8Cz8TcpOLC
To change recovery to TWRP (which most people seem to prefer now days) flash TWRP zip through CWM recovery. I like this method better than trying to install TWRP through Goomanager, I always have trouble with that for some reason.
Paste below address into your browser
goo.im/devs/OpenRecovery/sgh-t879/openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-sgh-879.zip
Now your phone is rooted and you have TWRP.
Re: [Q] Rooting the OTA updated UVMA1 build
I did as same as it.
But. I couldn't go to recovery
That is why important that make it sure flashing CWM touch recovery.tar through odin.
Maybe just my phone?.
Thank you.

I got my phone to root, but have been unable to change the recovery so I can switch to 4.2.2.
I will clean this up as time permits.
Success!
Through trial and error, on Ubuntu and Windows, I have managed to successfully root the UVMA1 build. I did not screenshot the process so I'll be going from memory. On the other hand I will post a stock backup of the ROM for everyone to use as needed.
This did not work on Ubuntu, had to use Windows.
You will need:
Android Tools SDK
CWM
most recent ODIN
Superuser zip
Steps:
download Android Tools SDK.
Extract to your C: on your windows machine
Open command prompt and navigate to the Platform-Tools directory
enable debugging mode on your Note (Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging
Leaving your phone on, connect via USB to your computer
wait while the Samsung drivers load
On command prompt type "adb reboot-bootloader" or "adb reboot bootloader" and wait (might need to try both)
Your phone should reboot into downloader mode
Open the newest version of ODIN
In Odin, nothing significant will change, I only saw a blue box in the first square top left
Click on 'Bootloader' button and select the tar.md5 file from Tomin's Goodies thread (link to come later)
In Odin, click on Start
Odin will scroll some text in the little window (bottom left) and then stop. I waited about five minutes. Nothing changed.
Disconnect your phone, pull the battery, press the power button (to dissipate magic electrons), put the battery back in and turn the phone on
Your phone should show a screen saying there is an issue with the Firmware and to use Samsung Kies to fix it. IGNORE THIS, don't do anything
Reconnect phone to PC via USB
wait about 30 seconds for the computer
In Odin, press Start again.
Odin should do something differently than the first time, you should see the top left window go green and 'Reset Ok' in the bottom left window.
Your phone will reboot. If it loads to Android then go to the command prompt window on your PC and type 'adb reboot recovery'
wait about a minute. CWM should load on your phone.
Now is the time to install Superuser zip through CWM.
Additionally, clear dalvik and other caches, reset permissions and backup your rom to external SD card now.
If anyone tries this, please document the process with screenshots so we can create a more comprehensive tutorial.
my kernel is 2.3.35.7-i897UCKH3-CL461307
The wiki states I must be at Android 2.3 build UCKK4 (AT&T) to get to cm10.
I tried the captivate OTA update- says I am at most recent firmware.
I tried kies- and it says unregistered device.
I just bought this phone (new-unlocked) from amazon to replace my failed captivate (running cm10). I really miss CM on the phone. lol.
Can someone point me in the correct direction? I am hoping there is a way to get to cm10 from where I am.

Quick few questions please? (elaboration)
from the read-me / many posts:
**Once u have the i897 Gingerbread Bootloaders, it is not necessary to flash them again. They are
backwards compatible, therefore you can flash Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, CyanogenMod, MIUI without issues,
per the proper install instructions.
-Are the bootloarders mentiond, the ones from flashing, or from samsung/att itself. eg. I have stock gingerbread 2.3.4 from the factory, should I use the bootloaders or not?
-Would it hurt to reinstall the bootloaders if there was any question?
- I performed a dry run, and cannot get the "digging down android" I get this:
Android system recovery <3e>
Samsung recovery utils -for bml-
image:
http://imgur.com/bJcQDXU
What I expected:
http://apcmag.com/images/galaxy-froyo-3.jpg
Did I do something wrong? (edit: built a jig- goes into digger mode now)
-since I am on 2.3.4 I am tryin gto install the kk4 you linked-
the instructions say get to download mode (done)
run oding as admin (done)
yellow com lights up(done)
press start? --how does this get to the correct file? do I load it under PIT, PDA, PHONE, CSC?
thanks much.

any advice?
Have u looked at this Captivate - PC Connection Issues... thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33227541
Be careful flashin packages with bootloaders. If flash fails during the install of the boot.bin or sbl.bin u could possibly brick ur phone.
If u were on anything gingerbread before this, then u have the gb bootloaders. So u can use a package without the Bls included.
Try a different micro usb/usb cable or diffferent usb port. More info in that thread i linked.
Majority of the time, the trying of a different cord is the solution.

Here is how I did it (100% working)-
From android 2.3.4.
Directions that worked: I used linux host running a xp virtual machine guest. This may have presented sopme issues, but it worked.
