Came up with a question/idea...
Would it be possible to transfer backups from one phone to another... as long as its the same build/device?
IE: I build a fresh install of a rom, with several mods, then make a backup, then transfer that backup to a friends 'Stone and he installs it from the OR menu?
Figured i would ask on here before i actually try it & have the possibility of screwing his phone up.
yes
if you have two same model
warning : after recovery please erase data partition (push the factory reset) (if you not two phone has same google account and etc)

It's simpler to not backup the data partition at all.
Can someone please explain to me all the categories I can backup with Nandroid backup?
Specifically what each thing backups (system, data, cache...).
Or if someone could provide me with a link which describes it in detail.
Thanks in advance
SWEET! Just got done with the transfer, and it works perfectly! So... pretty stoked about that! Glad i could do it that way instead of building a rom all over again and doing all the add-ins and everything else. This was much simpler!
you will need to backup the boot, recovery, system partition and after flashing please do erase data/cache

What do you mean overwrite it? Do you mean delete it from your phone/flash drive or do you mean restore a different backup over the top of a running backup?
Yes to either anyways lol ... I've swapped out backups multiple times and flashed a backup over a backup but it's always better to restore clean to make sure nothing conflicts ... I always do an advanced wipe in TWRP and format to completely wipe my internal storage and wipe the OS, I then restore from my flash drive using OTG and I've had no issues at all ... You don't really need to do the wipe like that (the OS I mean) but I know it's clean then and ready to start again.
Make sure you are familiar with using sideload or you have a USB OTG cable before you wipe the OS, I don't want you to wipe it and not know how to sort it out lol
Hi guys I'm new to this forum but i've been a CD-ROM for years...
I have question about upgrading ViperROM to 6.2.1
I'm currently using ViperROM 2.7.0 with sense 5.0
Android 4.2.2
I use Titinium Pro to backup all my apps and....
my question is....how to upgrade from 2.7 to 6.2.1 the easiest way?
without any data lost?
do i have to use the data backup from ROM or i can just use the titaniumPRO for full backup?
please advice
I always copy and paste the contents of the sdcard to a folder for safe keeping on my laptop or usb drive. I wipe, data, cache, dalvik cache, system and user partitions. Reboot recovery, use adb sideload to send the rom.zip over and flash. Setup the phone and copy and paste everything back. The whole process takes min. 25-30 minutes. Works for me /shrugs, just my 2 pennies.
I would follow @DeathAngel66669 advice it is very solid. I also use Titanium Pro to quickly add back my USER APPS only with data. Never restore system apps.

I'm just concerning about my User App data, (whatsapp image, convo history)
so i can just do titanium pro and wipe the phone? cool!
Whatsapp etc backs up it's own data to a folder in your internal storage, when you reinstall it and set it up it will say backup found would you like to restore. Just make sure you don't wipe internal storage.
You could also try and dirty flash as you are on viper one already, just go into advanced wipe and wipe your caches only, do not factory reset and when installing the Rom also select don't wipe data partition.
But again as the others have said, make sure it's backed up first, if a dirty flash doesn't work, you'll be left with no choice but to reflash and wipe along the way.
So, somehow I got my phone into a bootloop, and I made a backup of my data partition with TWRP. I reset it, and tried to restore the data partition, and the corrupted file is in there (was trying to edit settings.db for hotspot on Sprint). Anyways, when I restore the data partition, it bootloops again. So I want to get into the backup, and replace the bad settings.db file so I can restore the partition and have all my data back. How can I browse the backup using my windows 8.1 pc?

you cant. why are you restoring your data partition? that wont boot up, since its system that you edited. restore the whole nandroid backup, boot, system, and data. and if you didnt make a backup of boot or system, then reflash your rom to fix it. flash it dirty, as to not lose your data. and if you dont have a rom to flash, then youre stuck having to flash the factory img.

I only did data. The backup was AFTER it was in the bootloop, so I only backed up data.

ahh.. then in no way will it get restored, since its the system partion that you actually messed with. data just holds all your user data, thats all.

That is EXACTLY what I want to restore. All my apps, settings, pictures, etc etc etc.
I've got the phone factory reset, on and working.

well, unfortunately, it doesnt seem to be a good back up
if you factory rest again, have google restore your stuff. itll restore your apps, and main settings, and even wallpaper. and your photos are in your storage already. unless you didnt have it enabled to back up everything in the main settings.

I have never had luck with auto backup. It doesn't seem to capture everything. Plus there were things that I stored on internal storage (used to be my SD card on my Samsung phones ) that wouldn't have been backed up, like my Pokemon saved game. I knew I should have copied my internal storage before trying to restore, but I thought the data backup would have done it. Great.
Not sure if this is what your looking for but try nandroid manager: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.bkrestore
Edit: thats on device only, sorry about that. I had an issue in the past where I didn't have any apps saved via TiBu and had only a TWRP backup. Installed a clean ROM, rooted and then used the app posted to browse the backup on my phone and restore the vital apps that I needed. (Like google authenticator)... Good luck
Hi there everyone!
A few days ago, I was wondering about taking a full backup of my phone. I thought about titanium backup, but I also red something about extracting a partition as an image from the device. And then, I came up with an idea:
Is it possible to extract the userdata and the data partition as an image on this device? (I know that boot image can be extracted)
And if it's possible, after a full wipe and reflash of the phone, can I also flash these two images to get back my user data and the data of my apps? Or will it be enough?
As far as I know, these two partitions store most of the data, maybe system stores data too, like system apps.
Can you also provide me some commands for the process?
Thank you!

Does it also backup the full data partition including /data/media ?
I'm planning to backup my current ROM using TWRP before switching over to another one. If I selected everything on the TWRP backup screen, how much data will this include? Will I be able to restore it and have everything run exactly the same as it is now? App data? Files? System settings?

It does NOT backup everything. TWRP only backups the operating system. If you flash the wrong file or change the wrong setting, which can / will cause bricks, then TWRP is used to restore the OS to the original state you backed up. Internal storage files are not backed up, nor app data.

Ah I see, so I have to backup files manually, but the app data too? I was under the impression that the so-called NANDroid backups at least includes app data

Yes, it will backup app data. Btw, you really need to select the boot, system, and data partitions. For the other partitions, you can keep separate backups (in case of a bad restore). On that note, your first restore might appear broken; try restarting the phone; it should boot fine the next time around.
Cheers.
