framework-res.apk question :s - Android Themes

here is another framework-res.apk questoin
first off all: yes i have wrote every topic about framework-res.apk and i still cant get what i want
so im using sparkmod 1.6 for htc magic.
i took the framework-res.apk out of the rom itself , changed some colors of the battery icons. (without extracting the framework-res.apk , i just copied my files into the framework-res.apk)
then i push the framework-res.apk to my phone and reboot
when my phone then is rebooted, nothing changed i stil got the normal icons
i tryed to wipe cache and dalvik cache before rebooting ( afther pushing the new framework ) and still nothing changed
i also tryed to first wipe cache and dalvik cache and then push the file and reboot and still nothing changed
hope some1 can help me

I was frustrated with this myself.

[TIP] Running Dwang on Stock SPL? - If you have a problem loading themes...

If you are running Dwang on a Stock SPL and you are having problems installing a theme, I have some suggestions and ideas, some of these are very basic and common but ill repeat them anyway because youd be surprised at how many people dont follow these:
1) Make sure the theme you are using is compatible with the right version of Dwang that you are using. (keep in mind that v1.13-1.17.1 themes are interchangeable among those versions. ex: you can use a 1.13 theme on 1.17.1)
2) Make sure to ALWAYS have a Nandroid/BART backup, in case anything goes wrong.
3) Make sure youre using an EXT 3 file system.
4) Do NOT wipe BEFORE or AFTER flashing a theme. If you are using one theme and wish to switch to another theme, simply flash your base ROM over the old theme, then flash the new one.
5) Always have your apps backed up if you dont want to go looking for them again. I suggest ASTRO File Manager which can be downloaded from the Market for free.
Q. STUCK AT THE G1 SCREEN?
A. This happens sometimes if the theme is a little too large and you have Stock SPL....but what if you really want the theme and are afraid to upgrade your SPL because youre afraid of bricking your phone, or because youre one of the few people like me who are unable to upgrade to the latest radio? Theres a solution for that, I cant promise itll work for every single theme, but Ive tested it with Darkstar and DBeCe's black theme which gave me problems before I tried this method. I believe it will work for most themes on Dwang.
The solution is simple, try to free up space in your SYSTEM partition by moving your ringtones, sound effects, alarms, etc to your sdcard. This will free up around 2.66mb in the system partition. You can do this using Terminal Emulator.
type in
$su
mount -o remount,rw /system/dev/mtdblock3 /system
cp -r /system/media/audio /sdcard/
rm -R /system/media/audio
and you should see your audio folder in the root of your sdcard. You can add ringtones and sounds there too if you like, but the point is, now your SYSTEM has a little more space.
Restart your phone and boot into recovery and try to flash the theme again, and it should work now.
Q....OKAY SO I GOT PAST THE G1 SCREEN AND IT SHOWS THE ANDROID SPLASH SCREEN BUT AFTER A WHILE I GET A BLACK SCREEN!!!
A. If this happens to you, then you must format your EXT 3 partition. I suggest using the latest Amon_RA Recovery (v1.5.2 at the time of this post, MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE CORRECT RECOVERY FOR YOUR PHONE).
If youre still having problems, i suggest wiping everything including the phone, dalvik cache, battery and rotate settings (i like to wipe everything 3 times, but thats just me), reinstall dwang, login at the beginning, wait for the sync, and make sure to open up market and agree to the terms otherwise you might have problems with the market when you install a theme, (also keep in mind when u flash the rom again, you have to move the ringtones back to the sdcard again using the method i mentioned above), after you have done all that, reboot into recovery, flash the theme again, and it should be okay.
I hope Ive helped. Im still new to the scene but Ive found that this works for me and I just wanted to share, and I hope I helped and that your themes are working now.
If you have any suggestions or feedback, please feel free to share.
Thank You!
well done on a detailed and excellent advice. Keep it up
Great tutorial. I have the HardSPL and I am getting the same symtoms. All the themes that I have tried get to the theme splash and then stop. The longest I have allowed one to run is an hour. Do you think that space is still the issue? I am going to try these steps as they cannot hurt, but I thought that I was good with the HardSPL.

the hard spl has the same partition spacing as the stock spl, it is the 1.33.2005 spl that provides more space to system.
tryed it..
Tried this method and only got darkstar to work for a min then force close when I tried to login to my google account and wouldn't stop force closing....U got any other methods that might work.

Thanks everybody, if you have any other suggestions, ill add them to the first post.
darkstar 0.6.7 is kinda complicated... you said google login so im guessing you wiped before u flashed? normally you shouldnt do that but for this theme i had to, ill explainin the next paragraph, but first of all, did you try to skip the initial sign in and then try to login by clicking on gmail or checking sync settings? i had a similar problem with another theme, and thats how i solved it. let me know if that works.
this is why darkstar 0.6.7 is a little different and more challenging to install compared to most themes (at least for me):
darkstar 0.6.5 flashed fine with me, when i had dwang 1.15 but when i upgraded dwang 1.17.1 and used darkstar 0.6.7, it gave me a little trouble and i had to get a little creative in order to install it properly because for some reason the market app was pushed to ext and it was no longer available after i wiped the ext before, and i kept getting a black screen if i didnt wipe the ext system. so what i did was wipe everything flash the stock rom, backup the market app using astro file manager (some reccomend backup for root users, i havent tried it yet), flashed the theme got a black screen, wiped the ext3, then i reflashed the theme again and i got it working but i was missing market, and i couldnt download astro without market.....unless i went to google using the browser and i looked up astro 2.2.3 apk and i downloaded the app directly to my phone, and restored market. however the market will start force closing even after you run fix_permissions so i went against the rule of wiping after a flash, and i decided to wipe the phone....lo and behold its been running flawlessly ever since, but it took a lot of work, idk why it gave me such a hard time this time, but i managed to get it working. try the first method first and let me know how that goes.

there are a few things that could be removed from the /system partition of dwang's rom.
rm /system/app/GenieWidget.apk
rm /system/app/Maps.apk (since the updates are installed on the /data partition)
rm /system/app/BugReport.apk (its not in cyan's roms anymore)
cp /system/app/Mail.apk /data/app/
rm /system/app/Mail.apk
(cyan did it in his latest release)
(maybe? haven't tested this one)
rm /system/app/LatinImeTutorial.apk
There are probably some more "useless" .apk's that could be removed.

thank you so much for confirming my suspicions. i knew there was more useless stuff in the apps folder but i wasnt sure how to test it all. ill try this method out later tonight and try to flash a large theme and see what happens, ill add this info to the first post tonight!
sorry im late guys ive been pretty busy. i stumbled upon this page on cyanogenmods wiki
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Barebones
it shows which files can be deleted safely out of /system and /dev. im gonna try removing a lot of those apks from my dwang rom and i wanna find a huge theme to flash thats supposed to be used only with danger spl, anyone have any suggestions? i think this might work. btw does anyone know if its possible to make a script to make removing multiple apks easier?

[Q] Icon changes in Settings.apk not working properly

I'm trying to modify my Settings.apk from my HTC Hero running Elelinux Gingerbread. What I wish to do is to change the icons in the Menu->Settings list from all gray icons to the HTC Sense colored ones.
Here is my process:
Pull the app from the phone
Open archive in BetterZip and change the icons in question
Reboot into recovery
Wipe Dalvik
Mount system
Push Settings.apk to /system/app/
Reboot
What happens is that some of the changes in icons are ok, but about half of the icons are not changed! To make sure I got all the icons in the Settings.apk right I've pulled it onto my computer again and all the icons are there and I can't find any of the icons that are displayed. I've searched framework-res.apk as well and I haven't found the icons that are being displayed.
I have a couple of thoughts on what could be wrong:
Some cache still has the orginal icons (I've cleared cache/data for Settings.apk though)
The icons are stored in another place and are linked in (So how do I find out where they are?)
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this!
Thanks,
Daniel
same problem for me!!!!Help!!!
ohotic shall
I have the same issue with my HTC One X running CM10 P8.
I basically tried everything span_01 did. Checked via pulling. Erased caches. Fixed permissions.
I replaced the same Icons back when I used to use CM9 and it worked.. and I don't thing Jelly Bean stored the icons at a difference location.
I am currently trying to push a systemUI.apk that I corrupted to force it to clean the cache. Let's see how that will go..
EDIT: I pushed a corrupted file.. didn't do anything. Then I even pushed complete trash and nope.. Android is just fine.
So there has to be either a different file the systemUI.apk stuff is stored in OR a cache won't clear.
Since span_01 was using Gingerbread I would doubt the first.

circle battery on thunderbolt

how do you add different icons into the status bar
Use an app called metamorph. You can modify the framework...and that's the status bar icons
Tbolt meatclaws via talkatap
Go to uot.dakra.lt/kitchen and make one for yourself. You can edit the colors and much more. All you need is your ROMs framework-res.apk.
Get the framework.apk from the rom your using (/system/framework/framework-res.apk) and from the theme that has the icons you want, then use 7-zip to get into the framework res apk / drawable (drawable-hdpi) folder and swap out the .png files that you want to change. Make sure the new file has the same name as the one you are replacing.
You'll have to copy the .png files onto your desktop to view them and get familiar with the apk folders, it's not difficult.
Close the framework-res.apk in 7-zip, no need to re-sign it, and push it back onto your phone.
reboot.
or Ninjamorph.
is the methods described only for custom roms? im running stock rom...
any apps u guys recommend that use the least amount resources?

do you have to be rooted to use this
OK I just tried this. After I flashed the .zip I got a TON of force closes from various places. Browser, google search, some others, right when the phone booted. I followed the directions and extracted and uploaded my ROM. the only options I wanted to flash were the circle battery and the bootanimation. The bootanimation and circle battery did show up, but after it booted there were just way too many force closes.
Can anyone help on what I need to do?
First thing I always do out of habit is go into CW, clear cache, clear dalvik cache, then reinstall my zip. Takes care of most FC issues.

I want to try the UOT Kitchen but I can't confirm if the stock TB rom is odexed or deodexed. I am a newb, been looking for an answer, but I can't find one.
**UPDATE** So I been browsing my rom files and ive seen some .odex files. I think this means its an odexed rom and can't be used with the kitchen. Is that correct?
all confusing to me! haha
I have done quite a few mods to the graphics in the Framework, including the battery one here. My question is that every time I push the framework back and reboot. I have to re-setup a few things (i.e. passwords) and clear contacts and resync. Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? Thanks for any help anyone may have.

[Q] Willingly uninstalled a default app (how could i be soo dumb)

Please help me, i have a Galaxy S gt-i9000 with froyo (rooted) and i downloaded some custom dialer/ contacts and sms packs (it looked nice so i thought .. why not give it a try) but one of the apps said that its recommended to remove the default app so that it wont cause any conflicts. i wanted to uninstall the default dialer app but i ended up uninstalling the "Phone" app .. and now i cant use the contacts widget.. touching a contact wont pop up the menu with options (call, video call, send sms ..)
i wanted to check if i can try anything in Kies (restore or something) but my phone doesn't seem to be recognized anymore in Kies :|
Is there anything to be done?
any advice is deeply appreciated.
i have attached phone apk for you to install. you just need to unzip it and place it under /system /app and then reboot. make sure system is mounted RW
if that fails, reflash the ROM.
thank you for the prompt answer.
i downloaded the zip but i cant get to the root folder .. i mean .. i can only connect the phone in storage mode ...
should i try using a card?

You need either Root Explorer (paid) or Astro File Manager (free) from the market. Storage mode is fine, just copy the unzipped apk from your pc to the internal storage, then use one of the apps above to move it to /system /app.
Make sure you mount /system /app as rw or it wont paste.
ok so i copied it in /app ... asked me if i want to replace .. canceled and tried to run the phone apk that i already had ... it said App not installed.. so i copied and replaced the one from you .. and tried to run .. still no result :|

you got a DialerTabActivity apk?
i copied all and overwrite them but still cant install the apps back. i would of wanted to keep my apps and stuff ... is there any other way to reinstall the default apps that i stupidly uninstalled? (Contacts, Dialer, Phone) dont know if it helps .. but i used the "Uninstaller for Root" app

Ok, I could be wrong here, but I'm fairly sure I read somewhere on here that you need to MOVE system apps, not COPY them, so go to system/app/ again and delete the ones you copied, then Move them from root of your sd to system/apps again. Then maybe try a reboot. I'm not sure this will solve it, but it's probably worth a try...

Astro is free on the market so it should be ok for me to post it here (if not, someone tell me ok?).

Ok I've attached Astro, but I'd recommend buying Root Explorer, it's what I use. Also I've included a pic of the permissions needed by each of the files I put in the rar. I don't know about Astro, but in Root Explorer you just long press the app to get to permissions menu. You may not even need them, I'm not sure. Will check back tommorrow to see if you're making any progress.

Damn, that's a pity, that was the latest version from the market, think you should buy Root Explorer if you can.
Permissions aside, did you successfully move the files with Astro?
If you did, dont try to install them, try a reboot first, I think that's what I did when I put the email.apk from SGSII into my SGS.
Sorry I didn't solve your problem tonight, will try again tommorrow if you want
i couldnt even move them cause the app dir is read only ... same for the files ... so unless i can get an app that can edit permissions i cant try moving/rebooting .

Battery Fix 2.3.x

First thanks to kamma and his thread HERE. This fixed was 100% inspired by his attempt, i only had the benefit of having access to some files he didnt. This thread is based off his, but with the files from 2.3.3 which did not have the jumping issue.
I have NOT tested extensively, but in my limited experience(and that of a few others) this does fix the problem.
Code:
[color=#FF0000]USE THIS SCRIPT AT YOUR OWN RISK[/color]
This is just a proof-of-concept fix. I dont guarantee any improvement, because i have not much time to test it.
I simply replace battery libs and apps extracted from [color=#FF0000]ATT 2.2.3*[/color].
How to:
1. Download [color=#FF0000]CMW_Jug6_batfix.zip*[/color] (bellow in Attached Files)
2. Copy it to sdcard or sdcard-ext
3. Reboot into CWM recovery
5. Click "install zip from sdcard"
6. Choose zip from sdcard
7. Pick the [color=#FF0000]CMW_Jug6_batfix.zip*[/color]
8. Install
9. Reboot
V2 - Removed BatteryManager.apk & BatteryReport.apk as they are not needed

Installed at 85% battery life, was thinking it was actually closer to 95% at the time I ran this as I hadn't done much since it was fully charged. Didn't wipe battery stats or anything, it started back up at 84%. Did a few things to see how quickly it would drop, when it came down to 81%, I rebooted and wiped battery stats and davlk cache. Took a while on reboot after those wipes, started up at 80%. Still think it should have been higher than the 85% it started at, so I'm charging up to 100% and running Battery Calibration app. Will edit this post when I get the results, but it's not bouncing around like it was before. Awesome work Jug6!
Edit: Charged it to full charge, wouldn't charge past 98%, so I ran the battery calibration app, restarted, and on restart is said 99% and full charged. It was recommended in the app to fully discharge battery and then fully recharge without interruption. Will try to drain it quickly -> Pandora!

Each .apk has a "classes.dex" file in it.. when a .apk or .jar for that matter has an .odex file associated with it. whish is the case with the Atrix and other phones too... what has happened is that the "Classes.dex" file has been taken out of the .apk/.jar file and placed in a .odex form. this way it is device spacific and cannot be moddified or replaced using generic .apk/.jar files .. i.e. customized ...
he reason it is "working" for you, is because your phone is the spacific device these files were made for... so it isn't crapping out. At least, i think this is the reason...
In order to run a deodex on these file though, I would need some of the reference files that they are dependant on in order to run the script to do so. hat is the "Boot class file paths" that you see below...
I am glad to see these are seeming to fix the problem though. I will see what I can do, but I am getting errors running the script:
Code:
D:\Atrix\Baksmali>java -jar baksmali-1.2.6.jar -x Ba

- Phone still reads 90%, I will restart at lunch time in a few hours to see if it jumps at all
I am running Kenneth's stock 2.3.4 ROM

Was at 73 before and after reboot, seems to be fixed so far...
Did the following:
-phone was showing 96% (about 3 hours ago)
-installed this (didn't wipe dalvik cache or battery stats)
-restarted and was showing 96%
-been using the phone for the last Hour
-phone showed 76%
-restarted

Thanks just flashed this. Battery reads the same after reboot. Hopefully it will keep on working.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4g
This seems to be working for me. Battery level persisted through multiple reboots. Flashed over Ken's 4.5 beta.
