[Q] Galaxy S I9000 Wifi error - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Galaxy S has been connecting fine to my home network lately and the connection has always been strong as well. Since late last night though it won't connect. It says connecting > obtaining i.p > connected > disconnected and continuously repeats this cycle. My mates Samsung Europa can connect and so can my p.c and laptop, so it is obviously an issue with my phone. I downloaded WeFi and that has the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sorry my English, flash a kernel

Which kernal and why?

I had this EXACT problem just earlier when I upgraded to 2.2.
My phone always used to connect fine until the upgrade, and afterwards i got the same error.
Anyway what you need to do is to find all your router settings (you need a computer for this);
click start > run > cmd
in the command prompt type ipconfig and gather the following data:
ip adress: (your ip will be the same as your router's ip apart from the last set of digits (just make sure to make it a digit not already being used otherwise it will clash). 5-10 is a good option.)
gateway: (same as found in cmd)
net/subnet mask: (same as found in cmd)
Depending on your router you may also need a primary and secondary DNS: (generally the router ip)
With the following information gathered, on your phone click aps> settings> wireless and network> wifi settings> and then hold the left soft key to reveal the advanced tab. In the advanced tab click static ip and enter all the information about your router you gathered earlier.
After entering the router settings click and hold the left key again and press save.
Hopefully afterwards your phone will connect automatically as mine did, or just click your router SSID agian and it should connect.

I had the same issue after I upgraded to froyo. The way I fixed was actually just unplugging the router, unplug the modem, wait 10 seconds.... reset everything.
Ever since then 0 problems.

Thanks Johno.

Amazing mate, i really f.ing appreciate it. I've flashed so many roms, so many wifi drivers, deleted dhcp_list so many times, created so many tasker profiles and tried so many apps just to stop wifi error and disconnecting and mate, your method has fixed it!

Wifi internet

I have a wireless network from which I can use two laptops to access the internet. I am able to access some web sites from my xdaIIi when it is connected with my laptop, but it tries to use GPRS to connect. All I want to do is use the xda to surf while both laptops are being used. I can connect to the network. Please will someone tell me All of the settings required for internet access.
Really appreciate any help.
Wifi the simplest to do.
I really dont know what the fuss about connecting via wifi is all about.
I am by no means a technical person on such issues but here I have tried to explain step by step to get wifi on XDA 2i & the laptop.
PLEASE DONT TURN ON THE WIFI until the steps are completed
Step 1
Click Start -> Settings -> Connections tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -
Select Networks -> Select MY WORK NETWORK for both (from the drop down menu) -> OK -> OK.
Step 2
This is the most important part & most people I feel get confused here becuase of some numbers involved.
Click Start -> Settings -> Network Cards -> My network card connects to: The Internet (from drop down menu) - click tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet -> Use specific IP ADDRESS
IP ADDRESS : 192.168.X.xx -> X is mostly 0 or 1 (check in the laptop),xx= any number other than the one in your laptop
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.X.1 -> X = 0 or 1
-> Click Name Servers tab
DNS : 192.168.X.1 -> SAME AS DEFAULT GATEWAY
ALT DNS : CHECK LAPTOP,put in the same numbers (not necessary to fill)
WINS : 192.168.X.1 -> SAME AS DNS & DEFAULT GATEWAY
Here is my settings in INDIA.
LAPTOP XDA 2i
IP ADDRESS : 192.168.1.32 IP ADDRESS: 192.168.1.33
Subnet Mask :255.255.255.0 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Default Gateway:192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1 DNS: 192.168.1.1
ALT DNS
WINS :192.168.1.1 WINS :192.168.1.1
Please remember these are the settings for India .I think 192.168 is common through the world I guess ,only the last two numbers are different,i dont know
STEP 3
Click Start -> Settings -> WLAN -> turn on by clicking the [w] in the bottom
voila!!! (I HOPE ) Connected to NETWORK appears in STATUS.If you are using a WEP key on the laptop ,use the same key on the XDA 2i when prompted.
(If the network connection doesnt appear as connected in status)
Below the Main,Settings,LEAP tab there are 2 icons - PDA & W
click on the PDA icon
Configure Wireless Networks appears under which find your network & click on that
Network Name :
Connects to : WORK
Click Network key tab
Authentication : OPEN,SHARED among other choices in the drop down menu.(If you dont know then look it up in the laptop under wireless connections )
Data Encryption : WEP (MOSTLY)
(unselect the key is provided automatically if it is ticked)
Network key : ********(The WEP key as you enter in the laptop)
Key Index : 1
click 802.1x tab
Tick the selection & select PEAP from dropdown menu.
OK ->OK -> OK
FINALLY
CLICK START -> Programmes -> Internet explorer -> HAPPY SURFING
P.S - Must agree easy to do but tough to explain .
Nicely explain by nannlp
For me, just follow the Step 1 and after that turn ON the WIFI and get connected....
Most of the time, leaving your wireless adapter settings configured for DHCP will work fine - you just make sure your wireless profiles are set to connect to the Internet (when it finds a new network, it shows the box "which does this connect to?" and you have the choice of Work or Internet) and it should work fine, provided you don't have any hardware issues.
You can have hardware issues, though; my Alpine can't connect to some wifi routers (such as the wifi-enabled Thomson SpeedTouch 780WL modem/router which my ISP gave me, and which I HAVE to use to access the Internet at home) - it'll connect to my Linksys router fine, but that has no modem in it (I'm using it as a wireless repeater) but it just passes all traffic to the SpeedTouch anyway, so the SpeedTouch assigns IP addresses and does all the configuration work when new devices connect, and I've had problem elsewhere too - the device either doesn't connect at all, or it connects but then just goes round and round in circles not connecting properly.
It's a pain in the arse, and it's definitely a hardware fault (I've tried Hitchhiker and various other apps to try and make the device connect, and I can only get as far as "assigning an IP address" and it falls over). My new Hermes works fine on everything though, so I assume it's a definite hardware flaw.
Idiot's guide to getting my XDA 11i to connect to the home WiFi
My XDA 11i has recently stopped connecting to our home wiFi ... any SIMPLE suggestions .
Thanks !!
Anyone ?????
Thanks for advice councils guys
i REALY dont know why you need to run though all those setting, just turn your wifi on using the tab at the bottom right of the screen, then click on wirless manager (bottom left a square with a W in it), then the wlan icon to trun on the wifi, click on settings, its bottom right looks like a phone with a wire. find your wifi network and hold on it then click connect, if it comes up with network type, chose interet. then enter your wifi security key if needed, click okay and go back to main, then u can surf the net all you want the next time u just have to turn on your wifi and it will auto connect.

WiFi problems

Hi.
I recently bought my s730. Quite pleased with it, but one thing bothers me.
When i connect to my wlan at home (zyxel_2602hw_d1a WPA-PSK TKIP) i'm able to connect to the router, but I don't seem to be able to get an connection to anywhere outside my own network. I tried using Live Messenger, IE, Opera and Skype, but nothing happens.
When I'm using GPRS or EDGE it all works smoothly.
Any suggestions?
Do you have your connection set to automatic or only through your phone network? I have seen a few problems with that.
Also, double check that you are entering wep or any other security protocol correctly, took my 6 tries before it would work, it looked like it was connected to the network but it really wasnt (just personal experience with this phone.)

I do have the connection settings in both IE and Opera set to automatic. I's there somewhere else I have to change settings?
I'm quite sure i typed the password correctly. I also checked the client list on the router and the phone showed up correctly.
Gah, cant remember where I saw it but there was a setting in the phone itself for what to connect to.
Another thing to try under the wifi connection open your saved connection and go into it and see if you have it set to connect to the internet or just to the private network under "network type" in the Wi-Fi sub menu of Wlan settings. Its late and I cant think right, i'll see about checking more into it later...
I solved this problem - change your WLAN security on your WLAN router only on exactly MAC adressee (no any WEP) and your Wings is allowed to connect and all will be OK, work OK - Skype, IE, Opera. Problem was only to find MAC adressee my Wings
Wing + WRT54GL
Hi!
I have an S730 and a Linksys WRT54GL router. I've tried to use wlan with my phone, but it doesn't working. I want to use WPA2 with AES without Radius. Is the WPA shared key (router) same to network key(phone)? without security and encryption, it's working well.. I cannot see any syslog. That could be so easy..

I tried removing security for my phone MAC address, but there dosn't seem to be any options on my router allowing this. So I'm still stuck;-/

Did you check network settings? I mean e.g. if you don't use DHCP server and you didn't fill in right settings phone may connect to network but may not get outside. I know it can look like "lame" question, but sometimes even a master can do a newbie mistake..

usually it is in section WLAN Advanced setup - WEP Encryption - disable and in WLAN MAC Filters - active + allow asotiation with table of adress your Wings - aply . I have Zyxel Prestige 660HW.
I'm sure that DHCP is active, and that I get an IP.
I tried disabling security on my router, but same problem. Connects to my router, gets an IP but still nothing works

Your DNS are also provided automatically? Or could you ping (through some app) to any IP address of any server on the internet? If you succee, then we can look for a mistake with DNS.
Problem solved!!!
Okay. Found the cause for all my sufferings...

thanks for all the help. hope next time I have a better question

are you sure that you are using the "right" encryption? perhaps you have wpa2
(tkip or aes) and the device checks only wpa? or you enter the wrong password in
wep, then the connection looks like it is established, but you can do nothing with it!
just a thought...
yep

Stupid question tbh but I see this sort of thing every day nearly..
Your subnet is the same as the router yes? Does dhcp allocate one out to you or have u got a static ip on the phone?
Despite being connected to the wifi access without being on the same network you will not gain net access.
Who is your carrier for cell service? If you're on AT&T, and you've run an auto-setup CAB file for your cellular network settings, then you may need to double check your connection and proxy settings. Usually the solution is to select the correct network connection and NOT try to use your carriers proxy when you're connected via Wifi.
If you ARE on AT&T, then do this... Go to Start > Settings > Connections tab > Connections > Advanced tab > Select Networks button. Set both drop down entries to MEdiaNet... for most this will have NO adverse impact (assumes you have a data plan too). OK to save selections.
Now go back to those MEdiaNet drop down selections. Edit either one of them. Go to the Proxy Setting tab. Uncheck the second box indicating this network connection uses a proxy. OK the settings... enjoy non-proxied Internet freedom via Wifi.
If you're not on AT&T, maybe the same proxy issue could be present. But I couldn't help you with your settings. Hope this helps.

hey..thank you for having little think about it..but im in the uk..t-mobile and those settings having nothing to do really with connecting to my wifi at home..except tell my phone it can..which i did..
all the settings are correct...exactly the same settings im using on other wm devices but when they say its connected i can actually do something..rather than on the diamond where it says its connected but doesnt allow me
ive set the phone up identical to another wm6 phone in every way..that connects fine and i can use my wifi ..this phone i cant
Have you tried connecting to a different wifi router, a friend or whatever?
If you can connect there, then that narrows down the problem to your settings, or your router, or the router setup
Do you know anyone else with a Diamond that could try to see if they could connect to your router?
If they can connect but you can't then you could take a look at their connections. Or it could mean a faulty device. If they can't connect either, then this will give you some clues.
I'm assuming that you've deleted the connection and reformed it. Did you choose work or the internet? Have you tried changing that.
Have you tried changing the Authentication to Shared?
Each time you make a change you need to let it 'set' for a few seconds and then reboot.
Can you connect to the internet via Activesync pass-through?
Sorry, that's all I can think of at the moment. If something else occurs to me I'll post back.
Hi.. I'm not sure if this will help or if you already have tried it.
But I had the same problem and the solution was this:
Pres start -> Settings -> Connection -> Wireless Lan -> power mode
Now use best settings, instead of battery save. ( Im not sure if the translation is 100% right. Translated from danish Diamond)
At the start I couldn't load any pages with Wi-fi, though there was no problem with the connection from the router. But now it works like a charm
hey

This was the solution for me
I have had the same problem Imy phone even should be picked up by the repair centre then as a last try someone gave me the idea to change the leaver at wireless lan/energymodus to the left (best conection) and whala, I have tried it later whit my phone almost on the wirelesspoint to set it to best batterymode but not even at the middle it would do anything, it says conected but no data is comming to the phone, just when the leaver is at his almost left it will work.
Good luck.

[Q] Captivate won't connect to WiFi anymore

So I just got my Captivate a few days ago and I love this thing. I rooted it briefly with OneClickRoot and removed some AT&T bloatware and the unrooted so that I wouldn't have any issues with the upcoming Froyo update.
I don't know if it's related, but now my phone refuses to connect to my home Wifi. It repeatedly says 'obtaining IP address' but then says 'connection unsuccessful' over and over again. It was connecting fine last night after I rooted/unrooted.
I have 'forgotten' the network and tried to reconnect without success. I have cycled the router and gotten it to connect very briefly but sure enough I'm not connected anymore. I'm currently on the wireless on my laptop and it's infuriating.
I've already been growing steadily unhappier with the GPS situation and now this is really putting a damper on my excitement over this phone.
Does anybody know what to do about this wireless?
And if all else fails, how do I get my phone to a point where I can return it for a new one that actually works?
Thanks for all your help.
Christine
Yes the phone can be returned to the stock state by using odin . Its very easy. You should first try to use a staic ip. Sometimes the problem is that the captivate chooses to use the same ip as some other electronic that's using that router.
Just go to wireless networks -> wifi -> (menu key) advanced and then plug in the static ip
I am somewhat familiar with static IP's but have never set one up before, certainly not on a phone. Do I need to specify a DNS, too, or just go in and specify a different one from my laptop?
I had that problem before. I just used Odin and flashed the stock firmware (jf6) back on again and it was fine.
Going back to jf6 makes me think there is something wrong with the wireless drivers. Anyone have more information?
Sine I started to flash new firmware I have seen my wifi refuse to connect until the 4th attempt.

On the laptop click start and click run. Type cmd then press enter. Type ipconfig and copy those numbers to your phone but make IP ADDRESS a different number.
Its probably your router
I had the same problem with my captivate. Everything else in the house would connect to the router but my phone wouldn't (even though we have 3 captivates in the house). Then the router started acting up badly so I replaced it with a nice cisco router and BEHOLD!!!! My captivate connects quickly now. no problems.
Cisco Linksys E1000 is the model router i got. Highly recommended.
Good point, power cycle the router and see if the phone can connect after that.
I had this problem with my Linksys router. I had to log into the admin settings and I increased the number of connections available and it connected immediately.
The app, FXR fixed my gf's phone with this problem.

[Q] my GalaxyS is not connecting to Wifi networks !

hey guys ..
i can't think of any reasonable reason why it's not connecting to my router !!
i'm using my wifi connection with many laptops ..
and the GalaxyS was working properly yesterday too !
but now it's not working .. it finds the network and start obtaining IP adress for it but it can't , it just try to do that again and again
i assume that there is a password...you tried re-entering the password?
if so and still not working.
what did you do in the phone yesterday before it stopped connecting?
installed anything new?
yes there is a password .. i tried to enter it again
and i tried "forgetting this network" and start the connection over with no result
i didn't install anything new, but i updated some of the programs i have !
What ROM are you currently on ??
i have had this issue many times with darkys ROM
i'm using an official one ,, the one came with the phone (Froyo)
thats weird....
what about the kernel ?? or is that stock too ?
stock too
2.6.32.9
[email protected] #53
hmmmm........
i dont know how to help you.... whenever i get this problem i re-flash the kernel / modem / ROM.
I think you may need to do a factory reset, in order to get the wifi back. BUT !! to make a full backup you will need an app like 'titanium backup' which requires you to be rooted.
I can pretty much guarantee a reset will fix your problem.
Also if you dont fancy going on to a custom ROM, have you checked your up to date with KIES for the latest firmware ??
ok if i backed up my data ,, will it back up my apps too ??
or only emails, msgs and numbers ?
titanium backup will back up all your apps and app data and settings.
then after the reset, re download from the market and do the restore and hey presto !! job done.
ok i'll try that and i'll let u know
it worked .. thanks
well done thats good news !!
Reboot
I sometimes get this problem, too. I'm on stock ROM and kernel. When it happens I simply reboot the device and problem solved!

Try this.
Firstly, what brand of router do you have in your house? You need to find out if the router itself has restrictions on how many 'clients', or devices, it can have connected to it at any one time. To know what brand of router you have also helps with what the "Internet Protocol' (I.P.) address it has. It should be something like,
192.168.0.1
or
192.168.1.1
or similar. You will find out this information, on a Windows computer that's connected to the router, by clicking the Start Button, and where the 'Search programs and files' bar is at the bottom, type in (without quotes) 'cmd' and press Enter. At the prompt, type this exactly:
ipconfig /all
and the IP address of your router will be shown next to 'Default Gateway'. You then type those numbers only into the address bar of Internet Explorer/Firefox/Opera/Chrome and a pop-up will appear asking for Username and Password. Username is often
admin
and the Password is either
password or admin
You can then look for Wireless Settings that will show you if there are restrictions on how many actual devices can be connected to your router at the same time. While you are in the config of your router, it's a good idea to have researched the Primary and Secondary DNS (Domain Name Server) addresses of the Internet Service Provider you are currently signed up with. Just Google 'your internet service provider's name' along with 'DNS settings' and you will find the info you need.
You can then input those details into the router directly through the Settings menu, and change it from constantly seeking a domain to a situation where the router knows exactly where to look for the internet. This can speed up your internet a bit. With all the info you've grabbed, you can also set static (permanent) IP's for every client (computer/device) that's connecting to the router, making the whole network in your home faster.
Okay, now to your Galaxy. If your router is allowing a large number of clients on board it's wireless network, then it's a case of your Galaxy and the router not talking fast enough about assigning an IP address to your phone. The way you fix that is quite simple, assign a static IP to your Galaxy. With wi-fi turned 'On' on your Galaxy, go into Settings/Wireless and network/Wi-Fi settings. You'll see the name of your network there, and it should say something about 'obtaining IP address'. Now, here's the fun part.
Click on the left soft-key, and you'll see 'Scanning' and 'Advanced'. Click on 'Advanced', and a new menu will open. Down the bottom, you'll see 'IP settings' and under that, 'Use static IP'. Put a check in that box, then click on 'IP address' (below the checkbox). A little window will pop up, asking for an address. You now need to put a value in there that's similar to your router's IP.
Example:
If your router's IP is 192.168.0.1, then you type into the box 192.168.0.3
You need to make sure that the last digit (or digits) you use is different from any other computer using a static IP that's connected to your router.
Once you've clicked OK, scroll down a bit and you'll see more options. You need to tell the phone what 'Gateway' to use. That number is the same as what you found when you looked up the IP address of the router. Next, 'Netmask'. That's 255.255.255.0 Now, 'DNS1' and 'DNS2'. They are the Primary and Secondary DNS addresses for your Internet Service Provider, that you researched earlier.
Now you should find you'll connect to your router a lot easier, and have a more stable connection. Note, however, if you go roaming about and try to connect to a wireless 'hotspot' somewhere else, you'll need to go into the same area of Wi-Fi settings and turn Off Static IP in order to connect to the 'hotspot'.
Hope that helps...
