I really want to trade for an iPhone in case anyone is interested...
Anyway, on to my issues (after trying to reset my password, unsuccessfully, for 2 hours {you guys really gotta fix "forgot your password"}):
Im trying to install ROM Fresh Hero 2.4
If I get to the screen that says <HOME> Recovery, Ill press home and it just goes to a screen with a pic of the phone and a red exclamation point...
Ive also tried holding down the volume and power buttons and I get to the same screen.
Heres what Ive done:
z4root (it installed SuperUser)
Cleared/reset phone
And now Im stuck at getting into recovery to install the ROM file

Meh....just go get your damn iphone. Be easier for you.

search the forums someone else had the same problem and it was resolved here. i just don't remember what the solution was.
It looks like you haven't installed a custom recovery, necessary before you can flash a custom rom. Download ROM Manager from the Market and flash a recovery. You should then be able to boot into recovery to flash Fresh.
Also, you will need a custom recovery to create a nandroid of your current ROM, in case you have issues flashing a different one. Make sure you do that!!

Thanks a lot! It was ClockWork I needed. Looks like its common knowlege before hitting up custom roms, Im guessing thats why none of the directions mentioned it.
You come here, to the CDMA HTC HERO forum and say u want to trade your phone for an Iphone, and i say to do it.....and that makes me a fanboi how?

This should do it
Get a custom recovery, and install. From recovery do nandroid backup. After Backup do a FULL wipe of the phone. And finally install custom rom.

Very first thing you should do is.. Turn off phone.
Hold down home + power button.. Scroll down to backup/restore.
Then do a nano backup... Not the one with ext.
Then boot your phone back up and open up your sdcard on your comp and go to nandroid/file inside it/ then copy that file to your computer. Always keep it safe.
okay will do!

Here is a list of roms.. I prefer damage control 2.07.2 or fresh 2.0d
Download the file and save the .zip file to your sd card.. NOT IN A FOLDER
Boot into recovery and then go to wipe.. Wipe factory/data and dalvik
Press back then go to flash from sdcard.. Find the rom you put on there, click it and watch it go.
After its done reboot your phone and wait.
After that i would prefer reading on how to customize it from there..
REMEMBER TO ALWAYS BACK A NANO BACKUP BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING
alright!!!
thanks man!!!
Damn! these forums are very helpful!<3

um..recovery im using Freshkitchen..in my sd card recovery is
recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2?!?! lol
lend me some links for the 1.5 lol plz and thanks i cant find any..
Recovery would be the place you get to when you press and hold home+power at the same time.
And you should be flashing a rom from that.
ooo so when im pressin home and turn on its that green and black screen i get? aight aight i see
well thats it i guess lol its whatever is stock to Fresh Kitchen i guess.
Download DamageControl http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=656690. It will be in the very first post.. Boot into recovery.. POWER DOWN....HOLD DOWN HOME+POWER...
Follow the steps someone already said. It just sounds like its a bad download. If you look at the ROM Wiki and scroll down to 2.1 ROMs. There are all the ROMs on this forum.
Also never, ever try to flash anything made for GSM...Always make sure it is for CDMA---Sprint. If you do you phone is screwed.
And like everyone else says Nandroid is your best friend..Well, next to this website.
The only problem with that link is when i click download its taking a while to load then it says connection has timed out..
for the love of god and all that is holy stay in these forums.
do not go searching other places for ROMs.
Why do I say this? Because there is a GSM version of the hero and if you flash a GSM rom then you will fry your phone.
I don't want to see you back here in a a week and be like... "HELP! so yeah, I flashed a rom on my hero and it won't turn on. lol. how can I fix it?"
I will save you the trouble of starting a thread. You won't be able to fix it.
Is there one for the Droid? I have not kept up with the going ons with the Droid as I just got Verizon today.
there is 2.
Sprecovery and clockwork.
If you download rom manager, it'll flash the recovery for you with one button.
Sweet...I guess Amon_Ra has not come out with a recovery for the droid..

There isnt one. And its a very safe bet that there wont be either. Stuff built for a 1.GHz processor (Desire), wont run correctly (if at all) on the G1 (528 MHz).

he tried in the beginning, but couldnt get it working graphically. sprecovery came out pretty quickly and so we didnt need it. then clockworkmod came and well, no need.
Plus Amon_Ra is mostly out of the recovery scene now.
Can anyone show me to a thread where I can get the update.zip or actually just give it to me?
I can haz brain?
BANG! from my shooter...
Sorry.. I'm a Fascinate owner. I rooted my friend's Hero. Totally different. I have to learn within a day and this phone is quite confusing. I rooted as closely to the way I'm supposed to. Yet there is no update.zip.
u dont need a update.zip once your rooted and have a recovery installed just find the rom of your choice dont mess with it in any way like renaming then do the proper wipe procedures for the rom and install it.

So weird. I thought I read every post to the point that they're out of date. Never saw anything about an update.zip. I guess that's why.
Thank you very much. I really appreciate it a lot. Sorry for my inconvenience. My experience with my phone got in the way.
I just bought a used Hero as a temporary phone and I'm trying to get off the stock rom. I rooted the phone and flashed a MIUI rom. It got stuck on the splash screen during boot. Not feeling like dealing with it, I just ended up RUUing it. Then I rerooted it and tried another rom...same deal. Now I back to stock again. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
Thanks
You didn't firate anything, did you?
Try manualy flashing the boot.img in the rom from fastboot. Sometimes thats the problem.

Good idea. I'd need abd for that though to run the commands right? I'm really trying hard to avoid installing it on my computer.
Why ?? If your going to be modding your phone s-off,eng-bootloader & adb are all tools you will definitely need. If not then you may have a few headaches down the line if something goes wrong.

I won't be doing anything beyond flashing a custom rom.
I just dug up my Hero. It had CM6 previously. I tried flashing an updated ROM and it does not get past the HTC logo. I tried 4 different ROMs. Using CMW recovery. Wipe/Format all...and nothing.
Yeah I'm completely out of ideas. I may just have to suck it up and install adb.
Which version of CWM are you running? I've used 2.5.0.1 for all of my ROMs and never had a problem. I should have the zip to flash through recovery and the HERCIMG flashable through HBOOT if you wanna try.

Adb is a breeze to install. Takes less than 20 min. Pm me if and when you wanna set it up, and believe me when I say you will not regret it. Adb makes modding your phone a little easier.

What radio do you have? I remember people having issues when using the older radio (.27) instead of the newer (.29). Then again, it might not make a difference at all either. Just a thought.
i second drunkpilots radio idea, thats what gave me a headache for an hour the other night wondering why my cm7 wouldnt boot, updated to newest sprint radio and bam booted right up
Alright I just upgraded my radio. What's the best/easiest way to root it from here since I'm back to stock now?
What recovery do you guys prefer?
I've seen a lot of Vivids with WCX these days.
Post your experience with each one!
Stock CWM ftw
CWM still has a lot of issues. It's been causing quite a few hard bricks. Anyone that still has it, I would highly suggest switching to WCX recovery. I have yet to try TWRP but from what I've heard from all the devs, it still has a few kinks. I wouldn't recommend anything other than WCX at the moment.
I don't really see it as whats "preferred". You don't want something on your device that can potentially cause a hard brick. A recovery is something you don't use very often, so it's best to go with the one that just works.
Nice answer, right now I'm on the stock RUU ICS rom with an unlocked bootloader and I want to flash the WCX recovery, I just have to put the wcxrecovery.img in the microSD root, enter in Hboot, select recovery and then flash it with "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.exe"?
Do I have to make a backup of something after doing this?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Actually, just put the wcxrecovery on your computer where you have adb and fastboot set up. If you don't know where that is, just download the wcxjb root zip from the guide in my signature and unzip it to your desktop. Enter hboot on your phone and select fastboot. Shift + right click on your computer inside the folder you just unzipped and select open a command window here. THEN, type in the command "fastboot flash recovery wcxrecovery.img" and you're good to go.

I know it's possible, but I've never tried it. The best tip I've picked up from the guide was this
- Tip 3: On Linux, remember to run fastboot under sudo

Stock CWM. Never used anything else, never had problems, never plan to use anything else.

Just download and install the Android SDK for linux, what distribution are you using?
I suppose you're using Ubuntu or some .deb based distribution, this tutorial may serve for you:
Running something on "sudo" is giving superuser attributes to the processes and services that a program or whatever you are running needs to have to function properly. Yes it's important when you flash with fastboot.
If you can flash on a laptop will be better for you, a friend of mine bricked his galaxy sII when he was flashing and there was an electricity short.

I use the recovery-beta2 recovery from thecubed. I tried WCX but I couldn't get any ROM's to flash with it... nothing but bootloops for some strange reason (yes I fastboot flashed the boot.img first people). I reflashed thecubed's recovery right after having issues and flashing ROM's worked again. I'm sticking with what works and I've had zero issues with thecubed's recovery after using for several months.
I know I sound redundant, but does anyone have a link to the latest WCX recovery?
You have to download from WildChild's website.... It's included in his ROM zip. You have to have 10 posts on his site before you can download anything so be prepared to "earn" the download.

Did you use the recovery un-installer to get rid of CWM before you tried the WCX recovery? I remember some people having issues trying to use WCX over one of the previous CWMs without un-installing it first.

Some people just throw stuff out like they know what's going on... Wow get facts right first bro
Y'know if CWM loops, it's because your rom of choice had a useless ext4 performance tuning script in it that changed some of the mount options of /cache.
If you have CWM and find that after flashing a ROM that does weird things to your Vivid, just reboot to fastboot, then issue "fastboot erase cache" then boot to recovery and format /cache.
CWM hasn't caused any hard bricks, it's ROM developers that aren't properly checking their 'init.d tweaks' and updater-scripts. Now that we have s-off, a bad tweak or updater-script can and WILL make your phone hard to fix.
just used TWRP on my Sprint Gnex and love the interface! I used CWM on my old Epic 4G and it worked great too. To me, seeing all the options on that screen is easier....seems stable.

Great point but how would the average Joe know that about a rom before a flash? I'd love to be able to know that and avoid bricking altogether (but wouldn't we all). any tips?

Not sure if this was directed at me but I'll assume it is. WC closed all of his dev threads on XDA (Vivid forum at least) which is why I assumed it wasn't here anymore (yes I searched before replying). Not sure that I've ever seen dev related content stuck in a [GUIDE] thread (maybe a link to the thread that has it) so not sure why this was the place chosen and probably why I missed it. Apparently I'm not the only one since I've seen multiple people asking who can't find it. I appreciate you keeping me honest though "bro".

WCX all the way, ROM's, Recovery, & Kernel. Now, I'm not trying to say that CWM doesn't work, I used it alot when I was rooting & flashing my Aria... but I've had nothing but 100% success using WCX Recovery & ROM's since before I started beta testing for him (along with all the other dedicated members).
I've never used TWRP before, & all I think about when I see that word is Big Booty Shaking!!! ;-)
WCX! I have to say that EVERYTHING that he and his team put out is top notch!
