Last night I did the 8-finger salute reset and /data wipe, installed the Sideload-update and then the latest Auto-Nooter.
I had previously grabbed the com.google.android.apps.maps.apk, version 4.7.0 (#4707) from my Droid-1 and it worked on 1.0.0 so, I decided to install it on the 1.0.1 as well.
Imagine my surprise when I pulled up "Maps" and it has my location nailed down to within 70m. I'm not sure how it is getting location information from only wifi but, it is showing me at the neighbors house right this second which is about 20m error.
Has anyone else experienced this?
I have wiped data for Maps using Titanium just to make sure that there wasn't something left over and it still is picking up location somehow.
Attached is a screenshot that I just took.
Google Maps uses Wifi networks to help determine your location. The streetview cars mapped access points as they drove in order to build this database. This is not an error, and should work anywhere streetview data has been collected.
Ya... Been looking at articles about it in Google since I posted the message. That is very handy in an urban environment with dense wifi coverage.
Mine works with 1.0.0. It is pretty nice, but a little freaky, especially since there is no streetview coverage in my neighborhood.
I have seen this before too.
I just wish it would use wifi location data from a tethering cell phone.
Yes, I tried and it wouldn't, sadly.
Getting the NC to do nav is my greatest hope for it.

Not possible since it's using wifi triangulation to determine where you are. I.e. it takes visible AP's and coordinates it with google's database to pinpoint where you are. Using the wifi tethering off your cel. Google doesn't know where your phone is since it's always moving and not hardmapped to a spot in their database.

I think you're confused about how these "wifi-only" fixes are achieved. When Google (and others) have done street surveys, they were also mapping the RF footprint of wifi access points. You're getting a fix based on the name and relative signal strength of the APs that your NC can see.
Wick location is working great. It only claims 600m but it has me within about 10ft on the map.

Not confusion and yes, I have learned the error of my ways.
It had been a wild guess and a hope that was futile, obviously.
One of the things I hope to eventually be able to do with my NC is use it for nav instead of my phone: bigger screen is better, etc.
Until bluetooth gets fixed or found to be impossible I keep trying to figure out something and I probably won't stop trying.
And I will probably keep failing, of course, but such is life.
One odd note from a short while ago:
Prior to the B&N update, maps always had me pinned down to nearly exctly where my house is- now it has me about 1/2 a mile away more often than not.
It's pretty creepy, but yeah it shows me DEAD AT my house.... The radius of uncertainty literally covers my house.
BTW, maybe coincidence, but after I exited Google Maps I sat the NC down for a minute then noticed it was rebooting. Full reboot, but happily not a data clear or something, came back up like normal. Anyone else? Google Maps was the last thing I had installed and ran.
Can't wait for bluetooth to work on this thing.... Hopefully it does sometime in the near future anyway...
So any guesses why wifi location is working on Jon's nook and not others? Is this a product of the maps.apk off his droid, the 1.0.1 update, or auto nooter?

Network Location has to be enabled, one way or another.
I was promtped to enable it when I used auto-nooter, and I had found a hack somewhere to enable it before, when I rooted manually as I recall- perhaps it was a modified maps.apk?
Side note on accuracy:
Again, before the 1.01 update the accuracy on my nook was mostly right on.
Yesterday I was shown about 1/2 mile away.
This morning- about 1/4 mile away.
I have no idea why. No other changes with my network.

As said, it depends on if Google Street View cars visited your street while similar/same wifi access points are available at the location. That's how it knows. It sends up "I see access point X, Y, and Z" and Google says "You must be here". I suspect it particularly is more likely to work if one if them is unique, I suspect three "linksys" isn't going to get any results.
My AP name is unique and hasn't changed in 3 years, so I suspect that's why I'm shown at my exact location.
I just changed my SSID recently. Maybe it does it by MAC address though.
It is by MAC address. If it were purely by SSID, you would be in a million places if you were on one called linksys, wouldn't you?

Well the only reason I even mentioned anything is because the post above me suggested that his location might be accurate due to the fact that he had a unique AP name that hasn't changed in ages.
Google currently uses 2 pieces of the data collected during the driving operation to build its database and provide location based services - the MAC address of the access point and the GPS co-ordinates of the vehicle at the point at which the access point was visible. This data is stored in aggregate form, and is used to provide the location based service.

However they have also captured SSIDs. They must have gone by me pretty recently. I've changed routers within the last few months and even more recently cloned the MAC address.

Ahem, yeah, I was wrong. It goes by MAC/ESSID. So every AP is unique

Somewhat oriented towards cycling, but can be used for walking or driving, this software grabs coordinates from the built-in (or external) bluetooth device and uploads the data to a website in real time. I believe you can also view the current location real time, or the current route, or previous routes! It has a website that you register a user/pass with which also goes into the program for uploading. When you want to view your routes, you go to a slightly different place on the same server and it appears to use Google Maps to overlay the information.
It also has the option to store the data and upload it later.
I've just experimented with it a little, but so far it's quite cool. I see some other related software to this discussed around here, so figured some folks might be interested.
I have found one bug which I'm going to report.. If the data connection gets severed it seems to get confused and can't re-start tracking, then it crashed on me, but no biggie, just started it back up.
I think I'll also make a suggestion for log frequency.. Right now I think it's logging per GPS frequency (1 per second) but for slower moving transportation or for potential battery/data savings, I think it could easily be changed to higher values, such as 1 data point in 5, 10, 15s etc..

BTW, no affiliation with the author, just found the SW yesterday and think it's rather cool.

Hello,
Lurked around here for a while, first time poster. When I am in Hartford, WI the stock Time/Weather widget shows me as being in Hartford, CT, with an incorrect time due to different time zone. Is there a way to correct this short of not using "current location". Thanks for the help.

By chance are you using the Airave?
I know Phoenix had this issue. Maybe the cell tower did not update the DST Daylight Savings Time????
I do have an airave at my house, however I do not live in Hartford, this is just when I go there. My dad also has a hero and he lives in Hartford. His time is off same but he doesn't have an airave.
Thanks,
Mike

Oh it maybe the towers then. Mine does that when I go to Peoria. Suggest Sprint to fix or I just suggest using a fixed location
Both of our heros have this problem. Not a whole timezone off, but mine regularly shows me in a town on the other side of the state (about 150 miles away). It is consistent, though, it always picks the *same* wrong town....
It's happened to me with my phone on every single rom I've used (most of them) and it also happens on my wife's phone which is still 100% stock.
I haven't dug into it very deeply, but it seems to only be an issue when the phone is relying on network based location. If I go outside and get a good gps lock, it's fine again.
dwertz said:
Yeah but the Airave communication could come from Hartford and your aGPS could be getting it from that, thus showing you are located there when technically not. Mine does that, when I am at home in Airave distance it shows me as a different city 30 miles south of me.

I am not sure you understand me correctly. If I drive to Hartford, WI it says on the widget I am in Hartford (does not show the state) and the time is 1 hour off (as if it thinks I am in Hartford, CT rather than WI). When I drive back to my house it has the correct city and time.
Thanks for continuing to try and help me!

Sorry I jumped the gun on the previous one and corrected too late. I think its the towers. Some of the towers may not have been reset for the Daylight Savings Time. As I said I go to Peoria, same state, different city and the time will change, weird thing for me is there is no DST so not sure why Peoria is off but that is the issue I had before which they patched.
Only think I could suggest is calling Sprint. If both yours and your dads are off I am sure anyone that has a hero that looks up the location to set time and weather will be off. This information comes from the towers. They had a big issue with it in Arizona and had to send out a OTA. At the time I just set fixed location. Also if you are unsure if you think its Hartford CT vs WI, compare by the weather.

As a test, can you go into settings and tell it not to use network location, and only gps? Mine can still get a usable gps lock inside the house as long as I'm reasonably close to a window.
It's not really a "solution", but it might help pin down the problem.
(I'm strongly suspecting that the problem is not with the phone, but with Sprint having some bad entries in their database of tower locations....)

I think it still uses aGPS (assisted GPS, cell phone towers) if you turn location based GPS satellites off.

Hmm... Could be.
In fact, I think you're right. It still gives me a wrong location even when I tell it to use only gps if I go down to the basement or anywhere else where it's completely shielded from getting a "real" gps lock.
Still, the only completely reliable way I've personally found of getting the location to show correctly is to tell it to use only gps and give it some sort of reasonable view of the sky. Setting it near a window seems to be good enough most of the time, although it's slower that way than actually taking it outside.
I keep having a similar issue and still haven't managed to figure out a solid solution. My phone keeps telling me I'm in Albania, even though I'm in Indiana. The only thing I've been able to do to correct it temporarily is to go into Date/Time and uncheck/recheck "Use Network Time," and the problem is usually fixed within about 10 seconds. It goes on normally for a few days, and then I wake up with my phone thinking it's in Albania again.

I notice my Bing Maps doesn't show the right coordinates of my location. What could be wrong?
You could be standing indoors or somewhere where there's not a good enough GPS signal, or you may have location services switched off.

You are not alone. I started a thread where I called it =garbage. I don't want to generalize just in case it's a hardware issue on my part but it always shows my location in a different city and when using the GPS on maps it seems to always be trying to catchup.
GPS settings
How can we tell if the GPS has locked on to any satellites...or for that matter, if it's even on??? There doesn't seem to be any direct mention of GPS in the settings menu...just a general option to turn location services on or off. Am I missing something here...or does ms not think that giving users direct control over GPS is important?

Totally agree with you. My guess though is that when the circles radius is just a couple pixels from the central point then its GPS; since GPS is accurate to a couple feet and A-GPS when the radius is about half the screen. Again just guessing but I really do wish there was an option.

I believe you're right about the meaning of the radius of the circle in the stock map app. But, it probably isn't as obvious in other kinds of apps that use GPS.
I'm gonna shoot ms an email regarding this...and I suggest that anyone else that agrees that this is less than ideal do the same. Its too late to have them do anything about it in the upcoming January update, but if they hear enough complaints about it, maybe they'll do something about it in the update after that one.
Personally I'd rather Ms did NOT add in any such options. I have the option to use or not use location services, that's enough. Apps that can utilize GPS will switch the circuit on and use it while they're the active app. As soon as you switch away, the app tombstones and GPS switches off, to save battery life. That's just the way I like it, nice and simple. No need for an option of any kind there. It just works.

Jim, if the battery on my HD7 were more robust, I would agree with you. But it's not...so I don't. I would like the option to utilize only tower/WiFi triangulation...and to be able to enable my GPS only when I need my location to be precisely determined.
You are right...it does just work...which was more than I could say for my Vibrant's GPS for quite a while. But, access to any setting that could help me milk some more life out of my battery is access that I want.
GPS ?!?
I have both the HD2 and the HD7. The HD7 with services ON show my location over half a mile away from my office. This is consistent and constant. It shows me in the middle of a hwy norht east of my office. My HD2 not have this issue. It pinpoints my location, tells me in meters how accurate it is and tells me how many satellites it is in contact with. It will actually follow me accurately around the building inside and out. What's the problem with the HD7?? Seems like it is a step backward to me in this regard!

How wide is the circle around the dot? It may be using the Cell tower / WiFi to determine your position and therefore be very inaccurate.
What country are you in?
I guess it's possible that the actual maps are wrong and are showing the incorrect map overlay for your country?
after reading this thread i tested my HD7 with the bing map and its accurate, showed me where i am i changed to aerial map to confirm it...
i believe the data (3G) have to be connected, i am on unlimited data plan so its on all the time, wifi do not work as i tested with the wifi after that and it showed my location far away from my home...
this should fix everyones issue Go to setting and select find my phone check box both opitions and now try bing maps again. you will also notice well driving bing maps will keep a better track well your moving
did that and it now works perfectly, previously it was over a mile off my actual location

gps dosent work on google maps when i flash back to old rom gps works
As far as I know location services do not use GPS exclusively. It uses GSM cell and tower info as well to speed up approximation and let enough time for GPS satellite locking. GSM cell data is stored in internet databases (do not know where and how) but if there is a mislocated tower (e.g.i Thailand) your location might be determined in a wrong way.
To keep it simple M$ hidden this mixed mode location service. I don't know what happens if you switch off location service in settings and use a GPS application for locating yourself. Is there a difference? Might be.
ppl said that the built-in gps for the 8.9 is great...is not true.
currently i don't have any data plan with att on my 8.9. just using the 8.9 via wifi. well google maps recently allowed the download of maps for offline use. well i download offline map for nyc and was testing outside today. it was bright sunny day. i tested outside in midtown of manhattan for about 10 minutes and then downtown for another 20 minutes.
here is the result i got:
1. i loaded google maps and it wasn't able to find me when i was in midtown. the device was turn on for about 10 minutes. as soon i was near bryant park which have free wifi and connected to it, google map was able to find me right away.
2. then i travel downtown and was outside for about 20 minutes and it was searching for satellites and can't find me where i'm located. i was not near any free wifi. so i gave up.
so i think either google map either require data to work properly or the built in gps for the 8.9 is not that great or doesn't work at all.
i heard another offline gps map program called locust. i will do testing with that app later this week and will let you guys know the result.
any1 here also have the same result as me, please post your opinions here also. thx.
Nope.
However, I am using the P7300 non-LTE, non-US flavor.
Tablets have room for big-ass antennae, especially for GPS and they will usually get a steady lock without aid. It still is A-GPS, though (as in Assisted-GPS, meaning it uses all available data to get a lock - network cell towers, wi-fi networks in range, sensors and satellite data).
Mine gets a lock even inside an apartment building. Maybe you should have it looked at, if your warranty applies.

Which offline mapping apps are you using?
I'm not sure it's only the wifi availability that's the differentiator here. You went from within a city that has extremely high buildings (where you got no gps sats) to an open park with open sky (where you suddenly locked on to sats) and then back into the city with the high buildings again..... See where I'm going with this.
Maybe I'm off on my assumption but you can't blame me for thinking it.

I can use only the internal gps without wifi and find my location indoors using Maps app.
Sats aren't always directly overhead in the sky so it could have everything to do with time of day and where they are located in the sky. Hence my buildings and open park comment.
*Haven't had to do this on this tab but maybe your location files are messed up from something you installed or maybe you have a tab with foreign location information here in the states. Maybe try the info at the link:

noticed it said a-gps. a stands for assisted. that means the 8.9 doesn't really have a physical gps chip and will need data in order to get gps to work properly.
any1 has who has a 8.9. can you try this for me and report back the result? can you go into settings > locality> gps and check only gps and UNCHECK assisted gps for mobile network use by google etc.. so just check the middle for gps and uncheck all the rest, which i below is the first and third related to A-GPS or anything with google.
now go into google map and see if your gps still work and find where you are?
Quick search found this thread. Unfortunately he doesn't state how he found the tablet has internal GPS and there are no follow on comments to confirm/deny. But seems that someone would have caught and corrected.

Also I always have assisted gps turned off because I don't particularly like Google knowing everywhere I am, anonymous or not.
Could be my brief experiences with it are a fluke as I just have started playing with this tab and have been more concerned with other stuff working. But nonetheless that's what I've experienced.

i957 LTE version running... in between right now. About to install CM10 fresh again and reload all my data.
Hmmm... Not sure when this became about me showing my tab. Again, was just stating my experience. I'll look at it again when I load CM10 from scratch. I usually poke around on here when I'm not at home doing more worthwhile stuff. I may have time in the next couple of days.

Use app like "Gps status & toolbox". It tells you how many satellites are locked

I know my 7300 has real gps, but I can't speak for your LTE model

It takes at least 3 sats to locate you (spherical intersections and all that). So I'm not surprised you are not located in this instance.
Dude... Inside you can't use gps... It needs a line of sight with satellites in the sky... Jeez, please lookup gps on Wikipedia...

Well one poster here were able to work inside his house. Go look up in previous post. Anyway I will test this out outside today, beautiful clear day today. But I don't expect any gps to work properly. Will report back result later.
Inside a building, gps might work near windows, or under a glass roof or so. Surrounded by concrete, it is impossible. But a device might position you based on cell towers or a database of locations for WiFi routers, as Google has built up.
was walking to work today. here are my settings and results:
wifi - turn off
agps - turn off
gps - turn on
clear sunny day, outside for about 5 minutes. got 3 satellite to locked from that app i installed last night.
google map and locus still UNABLE to locate me. see attachments for my results.
well at least i was right that gps won't work for me...lol
I have used 1Weather for a long time without any issues. Lately I have noticed that the radar takes 15 -25 seconds to load, even though the map and present location load immediatley. I have noticed this on my Nexus 6, my Nexus 5x, Samsung 10.1 G5210, and Samsung SGS III --- all running different android versions.
Have contacted 1weather but they say they do not experience this.
So - can some of you install 1weather, and tap the map icon at the bottom to see how fast/slow your radar loads? I am in OKC area if you think that weather data feeds for this area might have something to do with it.
Or any other ideas - wifi speeds are excellent otherwise
SOLVED - Thanks to all who posted and made suggestions. It turned out to be the wifi router (ASUS). I went down to the AT&T store and tried their wifi - 1Weather loaded fast and so did radar. Bought another router (Netgear) and 1Weather worked properly. Some setting on the ASUS router (on or off I don't know) was the culprit - but I think it had something to do with parental control, because I initially had same problem on Netgear. Then I turned on parental control but did set it to block nothing and that did the trick. Have no idea why, but it's working now. May re-hook up the ASUS to see if there's a similar setting to turn on/off

I'm in the Dallas area and mine loads quickly. I also have some locations in New England and they load fast too.
At least you got a reply from them. I emailed them a question a week or two ago and they never answered.
I have the app and my Radar seems to load very fast.
I am in the DC-VA-MD area.
So I hate to say, but the problem might actually be with the area where you live.
Mine loads fine as well on Android Marshmallow and Android Nougat. You may consider clearing cache or at the very worst data and resetting up the app if problems persist.

I have actually done that and also rolled back to a previous version...with no success.
I did change my router to a dual band router, but am pretty clueless as to 95% of the settings.
So since you mention the router, are you saying on mobile data it loads fine?

No I have checked that as well. But interesting is that it loads the "still" radar first on mobile, not the animated one. It loads the animated one on wifi 1st.
Well it sounds like your wifi is working fine regardless if data is coming through and its just this app and the fact that its happening on mobile data too confirms its not the router settings. All I can think of is check permissions under the app settings, make sure its got the location access
(im sure it does) as well as storage permissions. Other than that if I cant replicate it then all someone can really suggest is uninstall/reinstall. The storage permission is to cache map data for radar which should be what makes it load faster.

Thanks for the comments. I'm gonna try it at the local AT&T store on 1 of their phones, if they'll allow it.
I wonder if it has something to do with the data source of the radar in my area? Oh well, will keep searching
If thats the case try setting it manually to a diff location. You could try 33411 for example which is in florida.
Just a suggestion...if nothing else works...you might want to try another app such as
Radar Now
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.usnaviguide.radar_now
I use 1weather and it loads radar very fast on wifi and even faster on LTE. Gotta be a conflict with something else on your device.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
