[Q] axura question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have read some good things about Axura RC2.2 CE. so im very interested in flashing it. im currently running cog 2.1.7 is there any reason i couldnt just use rom manager and flash it right now. or should i flash back to odin stock and then re root grab rom manger again and then flash Axura RC2.2 CE? and in the instructions it said to backup with titan just data and apps but not system data, why is that?

The reason why people recommend ODIN first before flashing new ROMs is because lagfixes and other stuff can cause problems for certain users. Usually you can flash directly from another ROM no problem, but like I said, ODIN and most of your problems will disappear.
As for not backing up the system data, you can backup your system data. Just don't restore it as this can cause a lot of problems. There are framework differences, etc. between ROMs especially 2.1 and 2.2 ROMs. Restoring system data will cause FC city in most ROMs.

i just tried flashing and my phone got stuck in some mode where it kept saying stuff about partitioning and my sd wasnt found.. so lame
i backed up my stuff on titan and saved it to my computer ill try again after i root. hmm weird now its not running the zip file..

Did you Odin 1 Click back to stock first?
Never a good idea to flash over the top of another custom ROM as the guy above me stated already.
You always want that "clean slate" to start with to avoid issues like this. Then you can safely restore your applications and application data - but people have problems restoring system data - so I never do.
Odin 1-click back to stock and try again - it should work fine.

i just ended up odin one clicking it to froyo. which im loving right now so ill keep it like this for a bit. when i had reset my phone to stock i tried axura again but it wasnt running the zip for some reason..after im donewith 2.2 ill go to stock and try axura one more time.

Hmmm..
Easy method to ensure success:
Odin 1-Click back to OTA JH7 2.1 ECLAIR Stock (not 2.2 Froyo)
Root using CLShortfuse's Root application.
Then update to Auxura as normal and it should work fine.

[Q] Root, Roms, Lagfix, Froyo, OMG!

Hey guys I have a rooted captivate running froyo. I want to try the Cognition v2.3b3 rom with lagfix, but I no idea where to start. Do I need to flash back to stock or can I just load the rom? Also I was wondering about overclocking, can I do that with this rom? Any help is appreciated. I am new to android, came from a unlocked iPhone this is way better! Thanks guys

you should be able to flash over but it is considered good practice to start from stock, also i think you need ji6 froyo before jj4 froyo which cog2.3b* are based on, so the accepted proper procedure is masterclear and flash jf6 from the one click installer get android id with android id changer, flash ji6, also a one click installer, and then flash cognition. all with odin. you can clockwork recovery flash cognition but it is another proceedure to root ji6. after cognition is installed reinstall android id changer and load the id from the stock rom.
i usually flash over without lashing to stock ect unless the flash over has issues. and overclocking is handled in the kernel you need to flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=828052
with odin, no .pit file needed just drop file in the pda slot and flash in download mode. overclocking is enabled by default so you need set cpu to manage it.
there is a link to an app to manage under volting, my settings are -50mv low and -75 high. it also handles the scheduler, i use cfq. anticipatory seems to work eqaully well. some suggest deadline and it may be better real world but i dont see it in benchmarks. and real world is too subject to placebo effect and coincidence.
this kernel also has a universal lag fix handled in clockworkmod recovery which replaces the stock recovery. best setting for that is no rfs jfs overkill but in the advanced settings disable bind to dbdata. it's fast! 17.299 mflops in linpack, and it's the first time that i have had a lagfix improve a linack score(at least it appears to)
Here is the steps that got me from ji6 2.2 to cog.
First if you don't already get titanium back up and back up all of your apps you don't want to loose and copy the file to your computer and remove external SD card if you have one.
Then i used the 2.1 version of odin one click to go back to 2.1 after that do a master clear then root your phone and down load rom manager. Using rom manager flash the clockwork recovory mod.
Next download cognition 2.3b3 then go back to rom manager and select install rom from sd card and find your cog rom you just down loaded and it will do the rest
Once cog is on your phone you can put you titanium backup file back on your phone and redown load titanium backup and restore all of your apps.

no you cant. it will only work if he has 2e recovery kernel. if it was the ji6 leak then it is running 3e recovery and no matter how hard you try, it wont boot into clockwork.
answer:
use the ODIN version of cognition. doesnt matter what rom you are on...
Ok so I am trying to flash cog via oden. I downloaded the file and am looking at the how to on the wiki but, in the wiki it says that all the files will be in the download Odin.exe PIT.pit PDA.tar PHONE.tar CSC.tar. The only files that I am seeing are the pda file the odin.exe and the pit file none of the other ones. Is this normal?

Cool gonna do it now. Will post results
Ok just flashed and that went well, but it wont let me open any apps. For example when I try to open up tibu it tells me I have to force close. I also dont have 3g
i dont know if there that is a common issue, but im sure you will need to reflash. you may want to flash to stock.
it's a multi step procedure and annoying but it is usually safer , i guess i got lucky.
i dont know for sure if you need to flash ji6 before cog 2.3b, design gears may have fixed that, i didn't read the details of why it was needed.
i would;
(optional)master clear, remove sim and sdcard. you will loose everything including titanium backups and posibly nand backups. master clear is done with the phone booted normally.
flash jf6
flash cognition 2.2 by meathod of your choice (so you have root and clockwork recovery)
flash cog 2.3b3 in clockwork mod recovery.
I don't know iflosing every thing is worth it for me, I really do want to flash this rom and try it out, but right now seems risky, I flashed back to froyo that I was running before. I thibk I'm going to do some more research and see what I can find. Thanks for all your help guys

Applying custom ROM to my stock 2.2 cappy?

Hey everyone,
I am about to finally root my phone and install a custom ROM. I was looking at the unlockr website and was reviewing everything before i went ahead and mess up things. Since I have a stock 2.2 phone do i need to do that ODIN procedure at all after i root it or can i just download ROM manager and install a custom ROM through that? I was either going to do Perception or Cognition since I am a new user. But for cognition i was going to maybe wait toll 2.3 was stable because people been having problems. Thank you!

2.2 is not stock. 2.1-1 is.
as far as cognition goes, the 2.3b4-6 are pretty stable, but dont get that confused with ANDROID 2.3....they are 2.2 roms
i think you have some more reading to do

Make sure you understand how to recover when you screw the pooch. Cognition is a good place to start, read all you can on voodoo lagfix. Perception can be a bit daunting with all the voltages, kernels and such.
Good luck and welcome to XDA!!
Current Phone:
Firmware: 2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number:Froyo.UCJI6
I did a little more reading... Yes i got confused with the firmware version and the build numbers and wanted to make sure if i was doing the correct procedure. I also looked into how to recover everything too so I am good if i mess up. I am going to root using one click root and download the needed apps and backup with titanium, then run ROM manager an "Flash Clockwork Mod."
I am going to go with [ROM]Cognition v2.3b6 and install that on my captivate through ROM manager.
Then I am going to look into the voodoo lagfix kernel after i successfully flashed. I just did not know if this cognition was a good rom to do or that I should wait?

Everything you want to do will not work with your version of 2. 2. You need to flash to stock prior to trying to flash any roms.
Please take the time to read and understand what it is you are doing before you ruin your phone.
- Axura made me type this
Just to re-iterate what has been said...
There is a beta of 2.2, but there is no official stock 2.2. What your phone has was the beta - many of the ROMs out there are based on this, so you may not "fix" anything by flasing to another 2.2.
I am sorry, is there a link where u can put me in the right direction to downgrade? Thank you. I just want to root my phone because having this 2.2 i have now is nothing special.

Root the phone if you are going to be flashing ROMs. It's easy enough to do, and Titanium Backup is a must have ...
Rooted my phone successfully and I am at 2.1 eclair and i have been reading up on other custom roms to install.
I was looking at Axura, perception, and cognition...but i am a big theme guy and i did not know how to go about like changing the theme for the ROM?
Do i actually install the custom rom first and then find a theme for the custom rom?

Well if you are speaking about the themes here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760106&highlight=Minimalistic+mod+theme
They are (as the post says) all flashable through CWM, which is exactly how you flashed the Cog ROM. Do the same process but select the zip file for the theme. Installs right over the top of the ROM.

Its is a safe bet to go to stock. All ROMs here are more or less developed based on factory settings, and this is got by going back to stock ROM. Going to stock resets phone back to factory level, and erases all traces of old ROM. This also avoids any potential issues that could crop up when u flash a different ROM over an existing custom ROM.

I Have A HTC Hero But I'm Pretty Sure It's The Same....
I'm Not Sure I'm Understanding Your Question, But I Think You Want To Get Back To Your Stock ROM & Flash A New ROM Correct?
If That's It?
You Can, But You Don't Have To Convert Back In Order To Flash Another Rom.... Just "Wipe"
System/Cache/Dalvik Cache,
& Install The New Rom!
You Can Always Restore Back To Your Stock Backup!!

No you can not revert bacj to your stock 2.1 from 2.2 using clockwork with a captivate
Can you explain how to wipe system /cache/dalvix cache or post link i googled it but found nothing with step by step instructions. I would like to try this before odin. Also why does it let you create a back up of 2.1 rom if you cant revert back there from 2.2 then whats the point of backing up 2.1 in the first place. Just thought you could do that instead of odin after reading a post which I was going to post the link to here but wont let me cause Im too new.

I do not recommend flashing phoenix over cognition without a flash to stock, but if you want to try, you can.
Cognition uses voodoo. First thing you should do is disable it.
Find voodoo file in your internal sd. Create a folder in side voodoo folder named disable-lagfix. Reboot phone.
Ok its disabled, but If Odin is the best way to go maybe I should try it but just been reading about higher risk of bricking phone using odin. Just really want to try different rom because cognition it smooth as butter but battery life is killing me compared to stock and yes I tried the charging battery to 100 then unplugging shutting down charging to 100, reboot, shut down then to 100 again no help. Anyways if I use Odin does voodoo have to be disabled also.
Pull your battery. Obviously power off first. Under battery is a build number, mine is 1008. Tell me yours
mine is 1010
Odin may be difficult to use. You may want to research your build more. Anything over 1008 is where odin is an issue
What is your base
Settings, about phone, bottom
Damn i didnt want to hear that,Says baseband version I897UCJI6 is that it.
Yes that is it.
Being on build 1010 I an not comfortable with telling you how to proceed. You need advise from someone who flashes with that build. It behaves differently with odin. I am sorry. Search build 1010
Ok thanks for your help, Ill look around
If you've never flashed with Odin one-click before, try this instead to avoid any risk of bricking (very likely on some build 1008-1010 phones that don't run JF6 stock):

Me And several people I suggested it to. But now I have a batch 1009 Captivate (traded in mine because of random shutdown issue).
saved my cappy once
I guess I'm confused...is odin really necessary at all for him? If he disables voodoo lagfix, and clears dalvik cache, he should be able to flash over the top...correct?
I flashed cognition 3.02 direct to andromeda 2.0 via cwr and did not clear dalvik or disable lagfix (since cog and andromeda both enable voodoo)...no problems for me.
Maybe it's different/more complicated flashing over the top to the ROM he wants to go to though...
i897 running Andromeda 2.0

Returning to stock... Questions?

I currently have Andromeda 1.2 on my Cappy and am really happy with it. I've been thinking of upgrading to 2.2 when it comes out tomorrow just to see how it functions - Then, go back to Andromeda.
Basically, I know how to use ODIN to flash the phone, but I always hear about disabling LagFix and some other programs before flashing to stock. Can anyone give me some pointers? Is there anymore to it then just using Odin to reflash (Download mode)?
Any help would be great.
Disabling lagfix is for when you are not flashing back to stock, ie. from cog to phoenix. If you are using odin there is no need to disable lagfix.
You will probably have to use Odin 1-click and Master Clear, but make sure to do a backup a la Titanium Backup and store it on your desktop. Then you can Flash back to stock after Master Clearing. I had a lot of trouble getting back to stock after unlagfixing; to make a long story short just Master clear and save yourself a lot of trouble.
After that I was able to reroot and restore my TiBu backup onto the stock Froyo. There is even already a stock 2.2 Captivate kernel with Voodoo lagfix injected, which has been giving me great lag-free performance, battery life and stability that can't be found in I9000 kernels.

You dont need to flash to stock every time. 99% of the time its just an absolute waste of your time as the rom your flashing "should" be wiping everything out anyway.

Need help with installing a custom rom.

Please help!!! I have searched and searched and searched the forums and have come across so many threads on how to add a custom rom to your Captivate.
To start, what I have been trying to do is add a custom rom after upgrading my phone from ver 2.2 to 2.3.3 GB. Some posts say you can just upgrade with the 2.3 on the phone, other posts say you need to take the phone back to the stock 2.1 rom. Then you find posts that say, make sure you have the stock bootloaders and kernals when you downgrade to the stock 2.1.
You can easily see how even a somewhat above novice can get confussed. To take my phone back to 2.1 I have followed posts that say use Odin 1.3. I have used odin before so no big deal. However in this case again you are getting different opionions and versions on this. Some have just the odin .exe and others have the .exe and the MD5 and .ini it the package. I am assuming that the one with just the .exe has everything built in as the size is quite big.
I have tried both ways and after I "Flash" it will not finish with the normal recovery mode and see the linux script. It will go to the ATT window and just keep rebooting over and over. I then will use my JIG and get back in download mode in order to reflash back to 2.3.3 just to get the phone to work again.
Can someone please give me a clue as to what I am doing wrong or direct me to the proper files and maybe some better step by step instructions.
Thanks in advance for the help.
What Rom is currently on you phone? Which Bootloaders do you have installed?

Here is the info:
Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I897UCKF1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I897UCKF1-CL273832
Build: GIGERBREAD.UCKF1
^ From the looks of what u posted, it looks like u have the leaked i897uckf1 currently on ur phone. If that is the case, then u could Odin the Cognition Beta 2 Kernel and then flash the latest Cog Rom (having already copied it to ur internal sd).
Just flash the kernel through Odin then use button combo (volume +/- and power...release after u see the at&t screen) to get into CWM 4.0.0.5 and flash Cog 5 v 1.00 from there.

Are you plugging into a usb port in the back of your pc? Also, there are several methods for flashing back to stock now, once you upgrade to GB bootloaders you don’t ever want to use the Odin with the button fix because it will only flash the secondary bootloader and the primary bootloader will remain GB and the result will be a hardbrick. Also, some of the newer builds came with Froyo installed and using the older 1 click Odin by DesignGears will put those devices in a bootloop. So it really is dependent on your device and your needs. I now use the method outlined in the Continuum 6.1 thread which will not touch the bootloaders and brings you safely back to 2.1 stock. I always clear user data and cache in recovery, flash back to stock using Cezar's method (not a 1 click) prior to flashing a new Rom. Most devs recommend flashing to stock first because there is less chance of corruption.

Please help!!! I have searched and searched and searched the forums and have come across so many threads on how to add a custom rom to your Captivate.

Listen, I'm new at this and learned watchin mobiletech videos from youtube. At first I found it hard but now is pretty easy (in my opinion). The first thin I do is back up apps with titanium and paste to my laptop (for me is faster to install them back), go back to stock 2.2, master reset using dialer (no odin), root, reboot, install rom on sd card, using odin i install bootloaders (I9000), flash talon kernel (odin), flash rom (CWM) and reboot. That's how I do it. Now, I could b wrong but doing it that way, in that pattern works for me. Like I said, I'm new at this but trust me....I've done it several times and it works for me. Keep reading and then decide how you want to do it. Good luck..."HONESTLY"!!!
It all depends on where you are now and where you want to go.

I'm new to all of this and have done a good amount of research but seems like the information never ends and there are a few ways to load a custom rom.
Method one
BACK UP!!!
Flash to stock (FTS)
Wait for your phone to reboot and then re-enable debugging
Hook phone back up to pc and Master Clear (MC) using Odin
Load Clockwork update.zip (DOWNLOAD)
Load FireFly_X-X.zip to phone memory
Remove sim and external SD, and unplug USB
Boot into recovery and reinstall packages (You may have to reinstall packages twice to get to Clockwork recovery)
Once in Clockwork recovery (Green Text), select install zip from SDcard
Next select choose zip from sdcard
Scroll down to FireFly_X-X.zip and select the file
This will run the script and install the ROM to your phone
After this is done, select go back and then select reboot phone
This may take a while, so leave your phone and go grab a snack!
Method 2
Load ROM file onto phone
Boot into recovery
Select ROM and flash it
Reboot, wait and enjoy
Wash, rinse, repeat!
What are the differences? Which one is better?
Seems like the first video is very simple and straight forward?
Am I missing something here? I'm already rooted and used titanium backup.
I'm on 2.2 Froyo and wanting to flash to Firefly 3.0
Thanks!
