My Droid 1 has a direction pad on the slide out keyboard which makes it nice for moving the cursor when entering in text instead of using your finger.
Does anyone know of a keyboard that can be installed that has a directional pad included? I got fat fingers and moving the cursor is hard enough lol. I'm running a few releases behind the newest Vegan build (just haven't backed up everything yet).

I installed smart keyboard and Ultra keyboard but even when enabled the don't replace the existing keyboard. ( Vegan5.1 )
Using it now with tnt lite 3.1.2
Install with mod as discussed in other threads
Thumb keyboard is great for this tablet. Has cursor keys, and is easy to use. Can setup the layout for different size devices too.

Do you actually know how to enable the keyboard? You have to select the checkmark in settings to let your tablet know it is available but to actually use the keyboard... You open something with a text box and then long press in the box. A popup should come up with input method as a selection. Tap that and all your keyboards will be there to pick from.
I only say this because I don't think you were doing the input method, change the keyboard thing...
Yes, I have them enabled the but I don't get the pop up to sellect the keyboard when I want to type. ( Working fine on my Desire phone)

I am using thumb keyboard also and it has a great directional pad and seems to have great support. But either its the touch screen of the gtab or thumb keyboard cuz there is some serious issue of "lag" or lack of response. I am actually blaming the grab touch screen cuz I find it unresponsive in other places at times.

There was a thread awhile ago about touchscreen sensitivity, and a calibration apparently at boot. Search for 'calibration.ini'. It fixed the problem for lots of people.

I have found the directional keys on occasion to be a little slow myself. If you want to do the calibration of the screen just create a empty text file named calibration.ini and place it in the internal sdcard. I have one on the external also because I can never remember where it looks for it. Then reboot you tablet without touching the screen and it will do it's thing. You won't see it do anything, but it seems to work.

Looks like the latest version of SwiftKey has added in a Tablet specific keyboard with arrow keys when in landscape...

Saw the video of it, looks great. Searched for it but can't find that version yet. Hope it will show up as an update soon.
OK, what am I doing wrong...
I installed several different keyboards (the free versions until I know they work for me) and I can not get any of them to be selected. I go into the settings and I see them listed and no matter how many times I press the checkbox they will not select. If I go into the settings for any of these new keayboards I get a force close.
Running TNT Lite 4.10 now. Same thing was happening on older versions.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That is a known issue with TnT. There settings menu doesn't let you select keyboards. I don't use TnT anymore but there is a way to change the settings app to the normal Android type, select the keyboard, and then there is a way to go back to the TnT settings menu and they stick. Pain in the A.. You can't just change the settings menu and leave it because it hoses up other things. There are a couple other ways I think people do it but you just need to search for "alternate keyboards" or something like that.
I personally can't stand anything TnT and run vegaN.
I get a force close when using either Smart Keyboard Pro or Thumb Keyboard. Force closes only began after repartitioning .....any ideas?? I was successfully running Smart Keyboard Pro before repartition.
is there a 'small extension cable' available so that we can use the Samsung Keyboard Dock in horizontal?
OK, we would have to prop up the SGT separately, but, this would increase the usage of the otherwise excellent dock

I'd buy the dock if it was horizontal problem is, the socket is located at teh bottom of the portrait side, not horizontal side We'd need a cable like you said. Or someone can hack apart the dock and make mods for it

What are the main uses, for your s-pen please.?
Opposed to alot of people here I barely use it.
It's too small to hold in a comfortable way for me, even though I don't have big hands or anything.
Also it starts turning around and slipping away so it's hard to find the button sometimes.
It might just be me being clumsy though..
I've tried it a couple of times, mostly for Swype when typing, making screenshots, drawing (S-Memo) and editting pictures.
i tried to use s-pen to take notes in meetings but it didnt work well. now i actually dont use s-pen. do some photo editing for just using s-pen thats all
Mine works as a...part of back cover. I dont really use it - sometimes for run, and sometimes to mark something on a picture.
I use it for taking notes and annotations on pdf files..really great...i dont have problems with it at all. I also use it along with graffiti pro as an input method. Kind of reminds me of the good old days of my palm device.

You can use it to write sms or emails - no problems there. You can either use it to tap keyboard keys, or use handwriting recognition which works really well. Also it's great for some games, editing photos etc.
I've only had my Note for a week, so my experience is only based on that...
I use the S Pen a lot more than I thought I would.
I use it for taking notes in FreeNote. I use the Handwriting (Freehand) mode as I find that suits me best. It took me a few days to decide which mode I liked best.
I don't use it for any text input - I find the handwriting recognition too hit and miss for it to be efficient, so I use Swype for all of my text input. I have been using Swype for almost 2 years on my Galaxy S, so maybe just a creature of habit...
I do often use the stylus for Swype if I happen to have it in my hand. It is a bit quicker and more accurate than using my finger, but only a little - the Swype keys are so big on the Note screen anyway
If I was going to use the SPen for handwriting to text conversion, then I would probably buy WritePad. You choose it as your input method instead of the Samsung keyboard. I tried it out when I was deciding what note taking app to use, and the recognition smarts in that were way better than the Samsung keyboard.
I also use the S Pen for some apps that require finer levels of precision than I can easily get with my finger.
I use some music and audio apps where I want to select regions of a wav file, or a timeline, and it is a lot easier and more accurate with the SPen.
And I use it to play Draw Something

I use it mainly for notes and emails and so.e sms. Just depends where I am at the time. If Im at my desk I find it quite nice to pull out a pen and write away......

The S-Pen is designed for right-handed people and thus if I draw the characters from right-to-left as us southpaws usually do it fails to recognize them. If I draw them from left-to-right it does recognize them, but then my writing speed drops like a dead fly. As such it is useless for writing anything :/

Go into Settings>Pen Settings
Change it from right handed to left handed.
Or is that just for the screen calibration rather than handwriting recognition?
I use my s pen every day man!

That doesn't change how the handwriting API handles the pen, it only changes the offset. As such it doesn't make the thing any better. I did send mail to Samsung about it, doesn't look like it they care.
Agree. I am also left handed. So I use it to scratch my ear.
I don't really use mine at all except on occasions when I am bored. Although it has sometimes helped with picking a particular narrow cell in a spreadsheet. I used to like Windows Tablet PCs their handwriting recognition was very good. If the note supported real time recognition I might use it more. But ultimately it's all about the screen size for me with the note.
I've found it makes crossword and sudoku puzzles more like the real newspaper versions! I take a screenshot of the puzzle grid from the relevant website, open it in photo editor and draw the letters/numbers directly onto the blanks.

I've recently got myself a Motorola Razr i running Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and am very keen to find a really good T9-style alpha-numeric keypad because I can't get on with full size QWERTY keyboards on small devices.
I've looked at all the different options on Play but I have a question regarding the built-in keyboard options on this device/OS:
If I lock the phone with a PIN a really nice T9 keypad comes up to unlock the phone yet this is not available in other aspects of the OS such as messaging.
Does anyone know why this is, please, and is there any way to make it available elsewhere?

It's actually a basic number pad.
I too highly dislike (hate actually) qwerty boards and I can highly recommend the (EvenBetter)NumberPad which I'm sure you've seen on the Store.
It was the first app I bought on buying the phone nearly 12 months ago and works pretty flawlessly, although for whatever reason there has been no update to it since July 2012 and the developer hasn't replied to previous emails I've sent.. As you've probably gathered there's a dearth of T9 keyboards and although I've tried some of the freebie ones since nothing comes close IMO.
My unlock screen isn't just a basic number pad - it has letters on the keys too.
Thanks for your thoughts on the other offerings out there. I have indeed seen the EvenBetter product on Play but was reluctant to spend money on something that might not have been any better than the free ones out there. In what way(s) is this one so much better than the free ones?

Is your phone retail or network? Curious as to why my unlock screen is just a number pad (not that it matters).
I can’t give a definitive answer as to why I find NumberPad better than the others I played around with as it’s a good ten months since I tried them and my memory won’t stretch back that far!, so let me say what I find so good about it.
The UI is simple, straightforward, and with everything you need to access on one screen: predictive text, ABC mode, add to dictionary, punctuation, numbers, caps lock, space, return, delete. Everything is perfectly sized and intuitive, and the only reason you’ll need to switch to the stock keyboard - accessed by a single button press - is if you want to insert any special characters.
Without it I would never have moved to Android (I had experienced it beforehand on a friends handset) as I detest qwerty boards on a phone, and to me its priceless.
I got my handset from a 3 store and was expecting it to be locked to that network but this is not the case. The 'System version' detail in the 'About phone' section makes reference to 'retail' if that answers your question.
Thanks for the additional feedback on the EvenBetter keypad. You obviously think it's worth spending money on so I'll give it some serious consideration.
Free keyboard app Multiling will give you either qwert kb or t9. I use its qwert kb with Light theme which looks like iphone kb and reduce my mistyping when compared with other themes..

Have you discovered something on built-in T9 keyboard? I got Swype preinstalled on my "I", and now i study to use it but anyway miss so much easy to use T9 i have had on my SonyEricsson LwW.
As an alternative T9 on Play market i found Smart Keyboard Pro, but you got to pay for it a little and dispite of all its advantages it's not a built-in app((
Can anyone recommend a good keyboard case? This is the only one I've been able to find, but it doesn't look very ergonomic, and and I really don't like the style. The strap bugs the heck out of me.

Even I had been been looking for a keyboard like this, but couldn't find anything. I really don't think anything like that even exists in the market.
But I've been more than happy with the Continuous Input method of the keyboard which Samsung provides, much faster than typing
Personally, I can't. I just have a foldable bluetooth keyboard that I've had for years now. I got it before a lot of devices had HID bluetooth, but it was around, so I can use it on both. It's a 98 key keyboard. Mind is similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Verbatim-Wireless-Bluetooth-Folding-Keyboard/dp/B004L9LT2E/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1404699793&sr=8-7&keywords=portable+bluetooth+keyboard, but some brand name I have never heard about.
That said, think about the size of phone, and how big the keyboard would really be. That size keyboard would not be that easy to use and would be cramped just for the basic letters, shift and return keys. Plus, through in the fact you need to put the keyboard on some kind of surface to use, and most people are on the go with their phones, does not make it the most useful thing. Plus, once you get rid or your phone, what are you going to do with case?
Given the limited options, maybe you need to consider when do you really need or want to use the keyboard. How much do you want carry around an extra device. Do you need something that convenient or can you have a keyboard stored your backpack, briefcase, etc.
