Upgraded phonepad text entry?

Firstly, may I say this is an excellent forum and a mine of useful information. I've had my Wizard (O2 XDA Mini S) for a couple of weeks and have found all sorts of useful stuff on here for it, so thank you very much.
I do have one gripe about the Wizard compared to my last phone, a Sony Ericsson P910i. The T9 phonepad text entry program is a bit pants. It's partly because it uses the screen rather than dedicated buttons, but mainly because some of the features in most T9 phones aren't there (or maybe I just can't find them).
For example, I want to type "pet.". I begin by typing 738, which comes up initially as "set". I scroll across to "pet" and then type 1 for ".". However, the text jumps back to "set." instead of "pet.". This, frankly, is a pain in the ass.
So, in short, are there updated phonepads out there that are more intuative than the standard one? I've searched on this forum, but have only seen different skins, which only change the look, not the functionality.

I had actually downloaded that already. It's quite good, but it's for use with the stylus and doesn't work with one hand (the buttons are too small).
Give it a go if you write a lot with the stylus, but it's not what I'm looking for. Thanks anyway.

Dialer Fix

I often describe my Fuze as a great PPC but lousy phone. My biggest complaint is the dialer. The biggest issues are the keys being too small and the keys blacking out during a call.
I have installed Nosleep and TouchInCallScreenTweak with mixed results.
I few months back I saw a post on Iconsoft Phone Extension and ignored it as it cost $. I saw a post again on it the other day about the release version and tried it. I may be hooked. It has Dialer, Contacts, Call History, and Favorites tabs and is pretty customizable. The best thing though is the dialer. You can actually dial a # key, credit card number, etc., while in a call. The keys are large enough so I don't mis-dial too.
It is worth the two week free trial. For me, I think I'm going to spend the $25 to keep it.

Iconsoft 1.4 is absolutely awesome I'm using it with energy ROM 6.5, because original HTC dialer conflicts with WM 6.5. That's the way, how should look contact's application And 25 usd isn't very expansive

I have to say, when I tried it out, I thought it looked quite nice, although I'm not sure it gave me much more than the standard dialer for my use. However, although I didn't seem to be able to uninstall it (so be careful of that, if you are just trying it out), it did work with my Touch Incall Screen Tweak as long as you got it to switch the screen off during a call in the first place. If you don't do that, it seemed to prevent the screen being switched off completely, and just allowed it to be dimmed.

With version 1.4 and some alternative skins available, I am now very satisfied with its function. I especially like the the fact a Speakerphone button is available and you can get the Keyboard back in view easily if you have to enter a digit to do something.
It is a shame people get flamed for talking about it. Iconsoft's marketing ploy was a dumb move but the product is has made my Fuze finally usable as a phone.
For those that want to try it, search for it. I'd post the link but then I'll get flamed again. I've attached a screen capture of the Dialer. The new skins come in Red and Green too.

does iconsoft phonex 1.4 allow th call recording feature? (ICR) thx.

There is another alternative which in my view is better. I have tried both extensively.

I have been using Inesoft Phone 4 for quite some time. It works great with 6.0, 6.1 and 6.5. I would not run any phone without it. In fact, I bought 2 licenses for the same phone, but that is a different story.
Be advised however, that the great big buttons you see for dialing are only available when you start the call. Once the call is connected, the normal system dialer is what is available. So if you have to check your office voicemail for instance, you can start the call with the big buttons, but once connected, you will be back to the small standard system dialer buttons. Not a problem for me as almost everything is on speed dial.
Even with that flaw, this is a great app. I can honestly say that I think it is the most well though out application from a users perspective that I have ever seen on the WM platform. They have a generous trial. Give it a try and you will see what I mean. Be sure to fill the first page of Favorites and you will notice that it automatically creates another one. Also, look how easy they made it to rename your favorite buttons. Lots of little things that show how much attention they pay to details.
Oh, one other thing, it has never crashed or caused any problems on my phone in about 9-12 months of use. Now that I think about it, it is kind of embarrassing, but in this time period, I have used 3 different phones (eTen G500+, x500 & Fuze) all with the same great results from this app.

Have you tried inesoft to compare the phone 4? I hear that's good as well. I can't seem to figure out how to add favorites. Does yours work in WM 6.5?

One question for the inesoft Phone 4.
Does it have a slider for answering calls or only press buttons?

I figured this out. When I went into contacts, I would press the favorite button. This just brought me back to the favorite menu. In the contacts, you have to select the contact, then press "edit", then add favorite.

Contacts Changer
I've had this program for a while. When you add contacts to WM there backwards unless you put them the other way.This app will swap them back.
Each time you add a new contact run contact changer and swaps them. Used it on my 8525 and now my fuze. I'm not for sure where i got it but theres a website at the bottom of the app of who ever made it to give credit.
Thought some body else might want it. Didn't want to start a new thread

An unstated feature of 1.4 is that it adds back the BT status icon to the Taskbar. The BT status indicators are called by the HTC Dialer. Took me along time to finally figure that out. Using the WM6 or other alternative dialers nukes them. PhonEx adds them back though BT Discoverable does not have a separate icon. I think the status icon is a must as my Fuze provides no other clues that BT is On. I don't want BT left On when on Battery.
PhonEx also plays nice with PocketShield although you must tweak their redundant features. PocketShield is a great app that disables unintended button presses while fumbling with your phone as it comes out of your pocket, case, purse, or wherever you carry it.
Adding NoSleepRaphael and TouchInCallScreenTweak has finally tamed my unruly Fuze.
My great PPC but lousy phone is now much better. Downside is having to pay bucks to get a workable phone that wasn't cheap in the first place.

I have been using iconsoft PhoneEx for a while and think it is handdown the best dialer I have ever seen.. The search function for contacts (I have 100's) work smooth and easy, the full screen cid and slide up to answer are all great.. The only 2 complaints I have are you can not reject a call with a text message, and i am seeing some conflicts with the standard MS dialer using NRG's ROM but all in all it makes using the phone much easier to use..
Has anyone else seen the conflicts with MS dialer (usually upon hanging up a call) or missing a call...

I'm using the stock AT&T Fuze ROM. PocketShield shows the MS Dialer enabled by PhonEx. I am not seeing conflicts but then the Fuze always seems finicky. I have learned to live, maybe tolerate is a better word, with it.
Phonex is very solid right now making me scared of a new version.

only press buttons. i have used both quite a bit and must say phonex is much better imo. i find inesoft to be visually ugly and not very responsive. scrolling is not nearly as smooth as phonex.

No it's not a finished product -- as he says in the product listing, it's a work in progress and he's quite open to suggestions, revising it pretty much daily since it appeared.
The way it works is this: most keys have two letters on them and this lets him make each key larger than the keys on the standard keyboards. To get the 1st character, press once, to get the 2nd character, quick press the key twice. You may notice there's no left or right parenthesis - in the current version (1.51.06), while there's no hint on the keyfaces, you can long-press quite a few of the keys and you'll get alternate text. For instance, long-pressing the "jk" key will give you "(" and "l" will give you ")". I bought it and am keeping it because
1) I like to support active developers
2) I like to help shape an app -- Lucid responds quickly and well to suggestions and bug reports
Do I have it set as my default input method? No. But I use it regularly cuz, well, my fingers are big and it's easier to work with two letters per key than 3

Dude htc ime has that option, its compact qwerty instead of qwerty, works real well, its free, and its probably just as good as the iPhone keyboard when it come to correction and all that.. but hey if you want to support the dev cool but it looks like his idea is a little to expensive in a market where that already exist, to little to late.. also the new touchpal keyboard has the same option and i believe theres a free beta..

I wholeheartedly agree with short/y's post. I really can contribute much to the community in yearned of developing so when I c a fellow xda members app in the market I buy. Sometimes I use it some times I dnt. I do it as a way of giving back to my fellow members of xda!

Dude, the developers of HTC's IME aren't reading XDA nor is there any meaningful way to influence their development on a daily basis. The CooTek offering is a different story -- I was a beta tester before they released and I've used their keyboard on Windows Mobile every since -- they're good and they listen.
BUT, Lucid's HERE and listens on a daily basis. You can directly influence how it looks and how it works today. If you're not interested, that's OK. But Lucid's demonstrated time and again that he's interested in furthering Android and the community in general so I'm supporting it and him. That doesn't mean I can't support other methods, too.

Swype vs HTC_IME?

I recently discovered both and I'm not sure which one I like best. What does everyone else like?

I was the same way so I kept both. That way I can switch whenever I want to man. It's nice.

I have both, but my fallback is the T9 keyboard from HTC. Swype is a funky concept, but in the end, a qwerty keyboard is a qwerty keyboard to me. I don't need another one if I have a physical one already.

Swype.Its so fast to type.

Swype, because now I can easily text with one hand while driving.

HTC_IME is the best VK around.

when i have to type web addresses in, i go with the htc ime, othewise, swype all the way (on a MT3G)

i use swype to play with... honestly i'm faster with a qwerty keyboard (i use better keyboard) but swype really is something to behold.

Most defintely swype beats the htc IME for me. It just so smooth and make sure you get the newer version! Honestly, its slower for me to open my keyboard anymore...Now i have actually decided to get the nexus because typing will be a breeze.

I just downloaded Swype, it is amazing. I can type much faster single handedly (don't drive and text!) than with HTC IME. It is much more forgiving, which considering my large fingers and the Dream's tiny screen, is absolutely great.

i switch between three input methods:
swype is my primary for email, sms and such when at work, home, or out and about. ...and to simply make iphone people drool.
android keyboard from nexus has taken over the roll that ime use to fill since it has speech to text so it serves as my input when in the car so i can respond to emails the same way i can with handcent sms...just talk to the phone and watch the words appear
when i end up needing to surf web for a while or input email addresses, i still find myself falling back to htc_ime.

I tried installing Swype-SwypeReference-HVGA-trial-release.1.16.12.5228.219.apk via ASTRO.. I already had the "version 1" installed, so it offered me to "upgrade".. and I went down that path until it said "Swype cannot be installed on this phone"
??
EDIT: I also tried Apps Installer, but that always FCs on me
EDIT2: I uninstalled previous version of Swype.. rebooted.. launched Apps Installer (no FC this time) and the new Swype installed.

I have tried every setting in Swype, but I keep getting a little pop up thing with symbols on it. I can't figure out how to get anything to type. I have gone through the instructions, but I guess I need to watch the tutorial.

Swype vs 4.2 Keyboard

Just wondering what some other Swype users think of the new gesture typing in 4.2?
I like that it matches the OS aesthetically, and the smoothness of the animation (as well as how it tapers as it fades)... but it doesn't quite stack up.
- I frequently find myself digging for characters I can long press on Swype.
- The gesture keyboard doesn't seem to recognize any gestures for double characters. My last name is Cooke and I I can't type it without getting Coke.
- Swype seems a lot better at giving me corrections for when its first guess is wrong.
- Swype just overall seems more accurate when I'm quickly moving through words.
What do you think? It's at least nice knowing the option is there should Swype ever end the Beta

I find myself missing the long-press characters as well, in particular the numbers. I often type passwords with a combination of letters and numbers, and it's a pain having to switch back and forth.
Double characters work fine for me. My understanding is that every word is a prediction when you use gesture typing, and predictions work off of the dictionary. So if the word you're trying to type isn't in the dictionary, then it won't show up correctly. In your case, maybe Cooke isn't a valid word according to Google.

I tried swype and gave up on it it was so innacurate - suggesting words that didn't even make sense.
The 4.2 keyboard has been excellent.. I'm not convinced it's any faster than just typing though.

I love it but it takes practice. I like the new jb version better than swipe..
Just a tip - go into your dictionary and shortcuts to the words that get misspelled.
I also love the voice typing.. If you have not tried it trust me, you will love it.

You can long-press the top row of letters to get numbers; no need to switch back and forth for alphanumeric passwords.
Also, 16 of the most common symbols are accessible via a long-press on the "." key. The most common one that's not on the main keyboard, ",", is the one that's accessed by just long-pressing "." and releasing it, which I thought was creative and very handy; the remaining ones are accessed by a long-press and then a slide to the one you want. I actually think it will work better than Swype for less-frequently used symbols once I get used to it, since I don't have to search the keyboard to remind myself which key I need to press for the one I want.
I think the gesture keyboard is just about as accurate as Swype in my usage, but I agree that the suggestions for a missed word aren't as good, and two alternatives is clearly not enough.
I don't think the bubble floating along above my finger as I trace adds any utility (for me, at least); I'm usually tracing fast enough that I can't read what it has recognized so far, and it's faster just to finish the word than to slow down to look and see if it has the correct answer yet. For people who trace slowly, though, I guess it would be helpful.

The more recent versions of Swype don't require looping on double characters, either, which was one of the things I really hated about earlier versions. In fact, I used other tracing keyboards (SlideIt, FlexT9) instead of Swype until Swype changed.

For me, typing with Swype y far better than using the 4.2 stock keyboard. The word recognition is much accurate. Using 4.2 Keyboard, I find myself retyping several times until the word that I want is recognized.

Cooke is in my dictionary for sure - the predictive nature of the keyboard does at least suggest it to come up after my first name.
Interesting that most of you prefer the 4.2... I'm curious, are you people who tried Swype and didn't like it, or people who have been using Swype as their default for the last year or so. It just might be differences in technique. I do it quite quickly.
Tony - I swipe as quickly as a fast touchscreen typer with 2 hands in landscape. The difference is that I get to do it one-handed in portrait. That, to me, is where the convenience lies.
One other features that I really miss when using Google's: after swiping in a bunch of words, Swype lets you tap on them in the text box and swap to the different suggestions. Google only seems to maintain the most recent.
Edit: Again, I don't mind doubling up on letters. The option to not do it is nice, for sure, but I prefer the accuracy.

The swiping feature on 4.2 looks pretty but I think it's not really there for the phone but rather for tablets. Pecking out words even in portrait on the N10 is unbearable for me. Swiping is the only way I can half way efficiently type out a sentence or post. Maybe if you have spider hands you can peck it out but I have a really hard time with it. I wish they would have just made the keyboard have the ability to split. I know there's other keyboard software out there that can take care of this, but none of them look like the stock keyboard. A minor point, but the stock keyboard look and layout is home to me. The other ones don't seem to mesh with the look of android as well.

My thumb isn't that coordinated! I trace pretty quickly, but only with the index finger of my right hand while holding the phone with my left. If I tried to do it with my thumb, I'd drop the phone for sure!

The gesture keyboard isn't much worse than Swype in that regard: if you double-tap on a word, you get a "replace" button that gives you a list of suggested alternatives, and nearly always what I intended to type is in that list (YMMV). The main thing I miss about Swype is that it remembers your cursor position: if you double-tap and correct an earlier word, when you're done the cursor goes back to where it was before you double-tapped. I'd really love to have that back (although I'm lazy and probably won't bother to install Swype on my N4; the gesture keyboard is good enough, IMHO).

I've been using Swype since February or so. I strongly prefer the old Swype. The newer beta that was merged with FlexT9 no longer lets you swipe symbols, which was a killer feature. For example you could swipe from the key that held : as a long-press, and ) as a long-press, and it would give you a smiley as one of the alternatives. You could do this even with symbols that weren't shown as alternatives on the normal keyboard, as long as you added them to the dictionary, so you could do things like <hugs> if you wanted. Swype has so far not implemented anything remotely similar, and neither has Google. In fact, some of it has become even worse with the Google keyboard. Try typing "^^". I use all these emoticons a lot.
So I guess I'd say that I prefer the old Swype most, then the Google keyboard (which seems nicer than the new Swype beta to me), and then the Swype beta. I could never go back to picking out letters one by one. It's a lot more muscle movement and near-impossible to do while walking down a street or something.
That said, unfortunately my Nexus S old Swype APK is for 800x480, so it looks silly on an N4. I was planning to go find an xhdpi version somewhere, but I've been using the Google keyboard, and I'm fond of it just for typing out text. I'd be mostly happy switching to it if it did punctuation.

4.2 keyboard seems more accurate to me. Swype was more inaccurate for my use. Also I like how I can type normally and then gesture type when I want without switching keyboards. Also this is the first iteration of it and its equal to if not better than swype which has been in beta for like 3 years.

If you turn off word prediction, the bar at the top displays punctuation.
Assuming that's what you meant, of course.

I love the keyboard. I used Swype for a long time and this feels almost exactly like it except that the keyboard is great for tap typing and swiping. The word prediction has been fine for once I stopped trying to use it like a Swype keyboard and got back into the habit of sweeping again. I still tap a lot when I can use both hands, but for one handed typing its hard to beat swiping.

The only thing i like about swype better is that it would automatically add words to my dictionary. With 4.2 i find the vocabulary a little more limited and and adding words manually is painful. Other than that i find it more accurate and faster, but I'm still on an old galaxy captivate patiently waiting...

I find the exact opposite. I find the stock keyboard to be very inaccurate when using the swype feature. I am using the real swype again now and loving it much more than stock. I guess you get used to one way when you've been using it a long time

Accuracy is fine - perhaps even better. But "added words" sucks so far. I have to continually add things like "Down8" (my username here & other places), and it never seems to stick.
I'm sure Google's keyboard will improve, but I may end up on Swype until then.

Accuracy is fine - perhaps even better. But "added words" sucks so far. I have to continually add things like "Down8" (my username here & other places), and it never seems to stick.
I'm sure Google's keyboard will improve, but I may end up on Swype until then.

You're doing it wrong

i find the typing feature in Swype is better in 4.2, when of course I'm not swyping.
I prefer it over the 4.2 keyboard but maybe cause I've been use to Swype for over a year and a half now.
